It's hard to take Luke Johnson's call for an end to the war in Iraq very seriously.
In a recent YouTube video, the long-haired anti-war activist says he plans to "abstain from eating for a full 72 hours" Jan. 4-6, 2008, while conducting what he calls a "Hunger Strike for Peace" at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
By promoting a hunger strike and telling the world it's scheduled to last only three days, Johnson is hurting the credibility of hunger strikers everywhere. After all, anyone who is truly committed to bringing about changes with the life-and-death implications is going to make sure his hunger strike is an open-ended event. Otherwise, no one will take you seriously.
Perhaps Johnson needs to learn something from Texas Tech University football coach Mike Leach, a man who's famous for using a ham and eggs breakfast analogy to define commitment: "The chicken is involved, but the pig is committed."
Take a look at the video and let me know if you agree.
