It opens wide release I think on Friday April 18th. I have know idea if it's any good but conservatives should go support a rare conservative Documentary.

Is anyone going to work this ID Documentary into their schedule
April 17, 2008 - 00:06 ET by Dee Bunkthis weekend? It opens Friday. If you want to support it the sooner you see it the better.
I'm going opening night.
April 17, 2008 - 02:26 ET by tracheostomyI'm going opening night. I've heard mixed reviews and I've got a sneaky suspicion I'm going to be let down because they're going to rush the details or something bone-headed.
There are tons of people I know out there who have no idea what this movie's about, really. I'll check back in after I've seen it.

April 17, 2008 - 03:59 ET by tracheostomyMy favorite part of all of this actually exists outside of the film, where Richard Dawkins accuses the Expelled filmmakers of tricking him into doing an on-camera interview for the film.
This is the same Dawkins who (oddly enough) swore he'd never be duped the same way twice after swearing that he was trapped by those naughty creationistas during the filming of "From a Frog to a Prince" that gave them the infamous "11-second pause." XD

Clear Thinker - Did you see the movie?
April 20, 2008 - 22:29 ET by Dee BunkI was wondering what you thought about it
If you don't mind me
April 21, 2008 - 00:39 ET by CortillaenIf you don't mind me answering while you wait for CT, I saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty good, but anyone expecting it to stick to the issue of the evolution-ID debate being establi-squashed will be sorely dissapointed. Roughly the first half of the documentery is interview clips with people who lost their jobs in academia over the issue and those who claim such things aren't happening (nevermind emails and the like to the contrary). The rest of the movie seems to be Mr. Stein reviewing Nazi eugenics activities and linking them to an atheistic, blind evolution mindset and comparing the current stifling of debate to the Berlin Wall. Basically, half is on subject, and the other half is "blind evolution leads to Nazi eugenics". While the latter may be a valid argument (there is certainly evidence to support it), it is not the purpose of my seeing the movie. Nonetheless, worth viewing, in my opinion.
On a side note, I enjoyed making fun of the college-age twits in the front row doing the "rock on" pose everytime Dawkins showed up. Blind adulation suits him rather well, in my estimation.

I don't mind at all - glad you did
April 21, 2008 - 08:55 ET by Dee BunkI wanted to hear what people thought of it and the other thread is too full and cumbersome to look through.
I liked it quite a bit more than you and it didn't feel like the eugenics part was half the film to me. I was glad he brought up the eugenics because a lot of people don't realize how these views can lead to extreme ignorance and the devaluing of human life.
I thought the clips of Nazi Germany and the Westerns and other T.V. shows were funny.

Unbelievable. Talk about riding the slippery slope all the way to the bottom. As if that's ever going to happen in America.

He didn't say and in fact he specifically said that Darwinism, Nazism and eugenics to don't go hand in hand. He only said that it's much easier to accept eugenics when you think there is no freewill and no real larger purpose in life. Hitler was a fan of Darwin and eugenics and creating a perfect race.
The danger is probably of America becoming more like Gattaca then Nazi Germany.

Did Ben's movie address this?

No, the history of Eugenics
April 22, 2008 - 17:36 ET by CortillaenNo, the history of Eugenics was, thankfully, left out of the movie (that would be a bit further off topic than called for, methinks). The lengthy section on Nazi Germany, including a clip of Hitler announcing his eugenics plans, was mostly focused on the way a atheistic, blind evolution worldview easily leads to eugenics and inhumanity that resulted from such.
My only gripe with Expelled is that the shift from documenting the "shut up or we'll can you" stance of establishment science and academia towards even explaining the concept of ID to connecting ABE (Atheistic, Blind Evolution) to the policies and outlook of the Nazi regime took a big chunk (Dee's right: In retrospect, it was less than half, but I'd say no less than a third) of the movie time away from it's declared purpose. It's similar to going to a movie claiming to be about how Christians get censored while Muslims get uplifted in the media and finding a third of the movie is actually covering the evils committed in the name of Islam (Woo! Offense-fest!). It's not necessarily bad and may even be well done and fit right in with the rest of the movie, but it wasn't what you expected to see. I'd just appreciate the description including mention that considerable time is given to attacking ABE through its logical progression. Nonetheless, that section of the movie was certainly worthwhile for the dangers it pointed out, and it made the point quite well that Nazism's eugenics ideas were based directly off of a ABE outlook.
Regarding the claim that linking ABE to Nazi eugenics is a slippery slope fallacy, you might want to investigate the issue a bit. The link is there, and the Nazis weren't the only ones with that idea. If you don't mind using wikipedia for a broad glance at the subject, in numerous laws on the state level were passed regarding eugenics prior to WWII, and in excess of 45,000 Americans were forcibly sterilized by 1945. An excellent source has records of the laws passed, and more than once upheld by courts, requiring the sterilization of the insane and "socially inadequate". The same ideas as Nazi eugenics were well under way in being implemented nationwide right here in the US, and likely would have gone much further without the sobering example of eugenics' horrors provided by the Nazi regime. Whatever you may say, eugenics is a direct extension of the idea of ABE, and there are still some who advocate it today.
Now, am I saying that all supporters of evolution are Nazis? No, but the fantastical hyperbole is amusing. What I am saying is that one endorsing the idea of ABE should see no problem with the concept of eugenics. After all, it strengthens the species, and if there's no divine hand in our creation, anything we do is simply part of the "natural process", us being products of nature and all. Dispensing entirely with morality in favor of rationality is a dangerous thing, but it is exactly what many scientists claim to seek.

April 21, 2008 - 21:56 ET by Dee BunkI thought it was entertaining and there isn't any good reason for liberals to be going crazy about this. He didn't use sleazy tactics like Michael Moore. He cut in pictures of Nazi Germany and T.V. shows for comedic affect. He didn't misrepresent anyones opinions, and he didn't conclude anything that isn't true.

April 25, 2008 - 17:13 ET by Dee BunkI was just on IMDB.com checking out what movies were around this week-end and noticed that Expelled had a 3.6 rating on a 10 point scale. I clicked on the details and out of 2,332 votes, 1,330 people rated it one star and 125 more rated it below 4 stars. I'm sure 97% of these people haven't even seen it. There were close to 600 votes from non U.S. users with an average rating of 1.9 and it hasn't even opened outside the U.S.
It's just like the Newsbusted videos. They clammer to rate things down because they are so afraid someone might watch it and have their mind poisoned.
Everyone should go over there and rate it.
