During the period between WW I and WW II Germany's form of government was a parlimentary democracy with free elections, not unlike the U.K. Like every free country at the time, Germany also went through economic
cycles of prosperity and hardship. The markets were just as global then as they are now so what affects one country affects another. With the economic crash in 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression that followed, the political masses were fed-up with their form of government and were ready for change.
Unfornuately for the German people, and the world at large that change came in form of an eloquent, articulate and mesmerizing speaker named Adolf Hitler. A man that came to power by being appointed Chancellor, the second highest office in Germany. The only office higher was President held by Paul von Hindenburg, a man that was old and frail but was loved by the German people. Once in power Hitler began systematically placing trusted people in key positions within the government. He also made sure that he had a majority in the parliament in order to pass radical laws,i.e. Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service banning Jews from government jobs and the Enabling Act that gave Hitler's government full legislative power. With the seduction of the German people complete and the death of the popular von Hindenberg in 1934, Hitler saw no more obstacle to his complete dominance of Germany and eventually the world.
Adolf Hitler a corporal in the German Army during WW I and in a decade and a half becomes the most powerful man in Europe. Fast forward eighty years and the parallels are frightening . You have economic hardships and people calling for change, you also have Barak Obama and I quote " An articulate, eloquent and intelligent speaker." In about two decades he goes from community organizer to on the verge of becoming the most powerful man in the Western Hemisphere.
God Help Us!!!
