I'm linking the Virus Alert Thread....as usual with message boards, alot of people had some pretty good suggestions.
Since you've put this in a Forum, we'll be able to refer back to it in the future.
Cheers (avec la glace!).

Try adblock
September 29, 2009 - 19:19 ET by CobraManTry using the Adblock Plus extension with your Firefox. That should block any ads and stop their scripts from running. You should also try using Flashblock and bock any unneeded or bothersome flash ads from running (those that Adblock misses). These flash ads can REALLY slow down a page!
I haven't had the problems you describe with Time Warner, but I do have a problem, sometimes, with other scripts here, manly load time issues with google-analytics. I have NoScript installed but I can't block the google-analytics scripts without disabling the comment posting feature. Haven't figured out a way around that yet, but it doesn't happen enough to make it that bothersome.
Widgetserver.com also tends to hang from time to time. But, once again, i can't post when i disable it.
You can also try Refresh Blocker. That should stop the main page from refreshing automatically. I find that the whole site runs faster when I stop those auto-refresh commands from executing.

September 29, 2009 - 19:24 ET by QueenMumThanks, Cobra. It's all a bit over my head. But I'll consult with my in-house geek (aka my husband) concerning your suggestions ... as soon as he has some free time away from his Tuesday night television schedule. :)

You better hurry
September 29, 2009 - 19:28 ET by CobraManYou better hurry if you want him to do it tonight. Wanted is coming on in an hour and I don't think he'll be wiling to trade a nearly naked Angelina Jolie for a web browser. Heh.

Here;s more links
September 29, 2009 - 19:39 ET by CobraManHere's more add-on's that you may want to check out:

Flashblocker

NoScript

refresh blocker
For all of these extensions, just click on th "install" button and firefox will install them for you. Don't let firefox restart until you finish installing them all. Firefox will reopen the pages that were close before the updates, so you'll be able to get back here quickly.
NoScript is probably the hardest extension to configure, but it will block ALL script by default unless you tell it to allow one or more. You may want to wait on this one until your husband can play around with it and figure out which scripts are needed and which are not.
But, other than that, the rest are very user friendly and you shouldn't have a problem loading and understanding them.

September 29, 2009 - 19:25 ET by bigtimerCobra...
I had adblock on with IE....and FF, when FF upgraded recently, they said they were not compatible with FF...I did some research on this also the other day because I was having troubles as well with the ads slowing things up....there was nothing they had done yet to upgrade it to be compatible with FF's upgrade yet...if anyone knows how or where to go to do so, please let me know as well.
Thanks.

Adblock Plus for Firefox
September 29, 2009 - 19:31 ET by CobraManThe adblock plus extension I'm referring to is exclusively for Firefox. I didn't t know there was a version that also works with IE.
I'm running the latest version of FF and I don't have any compatibility problems with it and Adblock Plus.

Just install it and restart.
You should also install the filter uploader. This will allow you to share blocked ad addresses with other users automatically.

Adblock Plus
September 29, 2009 - 19:37 ET by QueenMumI just went ahead and installed it, Cobra. How would I know if there was some sort of incompatability problem? Seems fine to me.

Firefox will let you know
September 29, 2009 - 19:42 ET by CobraManFirefox will tell you if there's a computability problem with an of th add-on's. Firefox checks for compatibility every time you start it. It'll ask you if you want to disable them when you start Firefox.
Be aware thought, this ad-on only works with Firefox. IE won't be affected at all.

Adding an add to the filter.
September 29, 2009 - 19:45 ET by CobraManAdding an ad to the filter is easy, just right click on the ad and you'll see a pop-up menu item that will block that ad's address. Just click on that and adblock will remove that ad and never let it open again.

I just wish....
September 29, 2009 - 20:16 ET by CobraManI just wish someone would invent an ad blocker that works for TV. I mean, really, I pay a lot for Dish TV network access and STILL have to see those stupid commercials!
Congress should make a law requiring all commercials to carry a "v-chip" like rating. They can call it C for Commercial. That way people can configure their v-chip enabled TV's to block commercials! Now THAT'S an expansion of government that I would support!

September 29, 2009 - 23:00 ET by bigtimerSpeaking of commercials...
I am so sick of certiain ads that have to come on full force loud speaker volume that I could scream...the only law I want to see be made is once you set the volume level you want to hear, it stays at that volume level for all that comes across the networks...it used to be so simple, you GOT UP, turned your volume level to how you wanted it, and it stayed that way on ALL Stations.
...and as an aside...when they make movies, put them in the network stations, it would really be nice to hear what some people are saying quietly without having to reach for the volume control...or for that matter turn it down when they get to a car chase scene or music of any kind.
Can they PLEASE leave the volume where we SET it AT!

You need an audio compressor
September 30, 2009 - 13:03 ET by nwahsHere's a cheap one, but I think you're going to need a television sound system to use it (i.e., TV --> compressor----> sound system)
