Roberts "more willing to do Bush's bidding"
In this morning's Mason City (Iowa) Globe Gazette, the front page article on John Roberts' first day of oral arguments as Chief Justice receives this headline: "Assisted Suicide May Reveal Tone of Roberts Court". Immediately below that is this subhead: "Court observers suggest new chief justice appears more inclined to do Bush's bidding than Rehnquist, a states' rights champion". The story is from the AP, though a quick Yahoo search this morning was unable to find that particular wording elsewhere. So it's not clear who is responsible for the subhead, the AP or the newspaper. Interestingly, on the website, the article only appears on the screen shot of the front page at http://www.globegazette.com/northiowatoday/frontpage/pdf.pdf. (Someone more technically adept than I needs to preserve this file because it will be gone tomorrow.) I did not see the text of the story on the Globe's website (www.globegazette.com) as of 6:30 am CDT.
Despite the fact that there is near universal agreement on Roberts' qualifications, apparently our new Chief Justice is little more than Bush's lapdog, willing to jump at W's command. The portion of the article visible on the front page also says Rehnquist would have been more likely to vote to uphold the law because he was "a states' rights champion". So I guess we're to gather that the court has made a lurch to the right. Or as the press usually infers, the "extreme right".
I will see the paper-and-ink version of the Globe Gazette later. I may add more at that time when I can read the jump page.
