Is it possible to get a Republican Muslim contributor added to the NB staff? How about Summer Kamal?

I concure with Shawn Steel on Muslim recruiting into the GOP - they fit right in as social conservatives...

Shawn's pro-Muslim but anti-CAIR - so his ideology aligns with NB:)

First, I would argue the
March 6, 2008 - 23:56 ET by CortillaenFirst, I would argue the definition given by Merriam-Webster of "cult" has been considerably toned down from what most people would imagine the word, possibly another impact of PC. To me, at least, a cult is a group of people so fanatically devoted to a deity or idea that they ignore all reason, even to the point of ending their own lives. Typically, cults thrive on the type of people who have already given up all hope, those who are simply seeking some cause upon which to throw their lives. This is the exact opposite of those who embrace Christianity, those who see it as the embodiment of the grandest of hopes. Any religion that encourages its members to throw away their lives in its name strikes me as distinctly cultish. Islam does so, while Christianity encourages its members to live their lives to the fullest, spreading their hope and demonstrating their God's love by example. Frankly, they are polar opposites in that. Granted, in some trappings they hold similarity, like two sides of the same coin, but that is attributable to the human abuse of the power that comes with large religions, not the faiths themselves. Their most basic tenants are irreconcilable.
Second, your links on human sacrifice do not, in any way, indicate the acceptance of slaying an innocent as a sacrifice to God. Rather, they seem to claim the opposite, that such is murder, and shall not be allowed: "To kill an innocent adult was murder." They are, instead, discussing the nature of Christ's sacrifice, which actually is separate from the loss of his life. His sacrifice was taking all human sin upon himself; his subsequent death was the inevitable justice for a sinner, not part of his sacrifice. There is nothing here that suggests Christian doctrine allows human sacrifice. Comparatively, Islam encourages self-destruction through promising paradise (that paradise, in and of itself, is worth some scrutiny; why a harem of virgins?) to those who die in a specific manner, meaning believers will seek to create those conditions of their own will, ie suicide or self-sacrifice in the name of their god.

March 6, 2008 - 23:40 ET by candanceDon't even bother having this discussion with Truthie.
If you think the premise of this thread is bizarre, wait until he explains how Islam is an extenstion of Christianity and Allah is the same as Jehovah. Then he'll show how the Christian church has just as many terrorists as Al Qaeda. Then he'll point out some peace-loving Muslims who even respect "the Zionists."
And when you start pulling out your hair, he'll quote a random Bible passage that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. And then when you get even more flabbergasted, he'll pout that he's a CHRISTIAN FUNDIE just like you.
Then when you decide to end the conversation because it's so absurd, he'll go down the line replying to every single post to make certain he gets the last word.
I don't disagree with Truthie's desire to be polite to Muslims, but I resent the effort to mingle our religions together into some sort of hybrid - especially when he willingly and abundantly dumps on Christianity to make his point yet still calls himself a CHRISTIAN FUNDIE!!!!!!!!!
He will cherry pick Bible verses and twist them out of context -- and when you check Islam apologist websites, you find his posts verbatim where he copied them.
This is why I refuse to partner with Islam:
Galations 1:7-9
...but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
Mark 13:21-23
Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand.

March 7, 2008 - 00:12 ET by CortillaenAllow me to be blunt (or don't; not like you can stop me), your purpose in posting this suggestion was to stir up controversy, not make a suggestion for the betterment of this community. Had your intention been the latter, a few discrete emails or personal messages with your suggestion would have served better. Since I don't believe you an idiot, this rules out such intention. Unless you have a completely different reason to throw out here, I'm left with only one rational (to some extant) motive for your action.

Part of me thinks he is an idiot, but another part of me thinks he is saying this crap to try and gather possible converts to his weird Christian/Moslem cult. And I don't mean to denigrate the Christian religion. It's just the way he wants to weave the two together so we heathens will come around to his way of thinking. If I'm any judge of people, he won't find any converts here.

March 7, 2008 - 00:29 ET by PrairieSkyI agree, and have a suggestion-If stirring up controversy is the intent here (and I think that a distinct possibility), then deciding "not to play" may be an appropriate response.

The two best methods of
March 7, 2008 - 00:45 ET by CortillaenThe two best methods of dealing with those who simply want a fight are to ignore them, as you suggest, or accept their challenge but do so in a calm, collected manner so as to deny them the gratification of seeing an emotional response. I tend to prefer the latter, simply because it's not my nature to allow fallacious or dishonest statements to go unchallenged, but in challenging them, one must be careful not to be drawn into a redundant back-and-forth. Letting the opponent have the last word isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially if they only reiterate the same ideas previously broken.
I'll have to take my leave for the night, though. Morpheus beckons.

March 7, 2008 - 01:00 ET by PrairieSkyAgain, I agree. I also am definitely not one to run from a fight and believe in challenging untruths and deceit. That said, before one launches oneself into the fight, one must be sure that there actually is a fight, and is not, as I think may be in this case, a situation of 'someone' just pulling everyone's chain to see what happens. As you alluded though, sometimes in other instances, if given enough rope, the 'someone' may end up hanging themself with their own words.
