You are going to have to try them out. Really, I can't think of a bad gun. It is a matter or what you are comfortable with.
Take shotguns. One day when I get a lucrative job again I am going to buy a nice 12 gauge over under. On skeet ranges and elsewhere the guys with the pump shotguns swore by them and could not understand why anyone would not buy a pump. They are cheaper and more fun, so I was told. But everytime I'm at the range, I see someone get in a jam with them at least once. I've shot them and I'm like "ehhhhhh..."
But the over-under is simpler, and if needed to defend the home, it's a matter of loading the shells and closing the breech. No screwing around. And it WILL fire, no problem.
Now, the ONLY way I found this out was by hitting skeet ranges. Pure and simple. You are going to have to hit some ranges and sample various ones. This way you find what you are comfortable with.
I think this one looks pretty cool.
I sure hope that I have enough time to go to the target range and buy one before I need to have one for protection. I sure hope to God this guy is wrong, because if he is right California is going to have some looters real soon :-(
