Unsane regarding our conversation on the other thread

The thread is  is starting to get old so I wanted to continue it here. I am not saying it is not free speech for people to boycott advertisers or threaten advertisers.

I am saying I do not believe in the concept and disagree with people using such tactics.

This is your comparison.

"Do you not understand the idea that customers in a free market have the same amount of power to say "no" as to say "yes"? I want my local grocery store to carry apple-flavored granola bars but that doesn't mean I will GET them..."

I totally understand this, but this is not an accurate comparison.  If there is not enough demand for apple granola bars, then the store is not going to order them because the profit margin is too small.

However if people started protesting the store because they found out that the apple flavored granola bars had too many calories in them and felt it was their place to tell everyone else not to eat them, then that is just silly.

Sadly, it works

Who said that the reason those granola bars aren't in the store isn't due to popular protest or to not enough people buying it or BOTH?

It is a 100% accurate comparison.

Dr. Laura did not have the audience, in the end, to justify staying on the air.  Period.  That other people didn't like her or her show started writing her advertisers pushed the show over the edge.

I don't really know how else to say that the free market means if you have enough peoplethat watch or listen to your program you will be sucessful because advertisors will be happy to take a time slot

However regardless of how many viewers you have, if you do not have advertisors, your show will not work because the advertisements are what pays for production costs.

Again I am not saying people dont have the right to threaten advertisors I just don't see why if you don't like a show, why you would want to dictate to others what they can watch.

Le sigh

Basic decisions are dictated to me every day.  Why do I have to go to Houston to get my beloved fragrance of underarm deodorant?

If said program had more backing, i.e. viewers/listeners, then it wouldn't matter what other people think.  You don't think this tactic isn't being constantly tried against Rush?  Do keep in mind that once upon a time he pitched FL Orange Juice and Pizza Hut.

Why doesn't it work?  Twenty million listeners consistently tuning in.

All right Unsane

Obviously you don't understand that getting deodorant in Houston is not because of local stores being threatened for stocking the same deodorant.

Okay let's stop beating that dead horse let's talk about the concept. Why do folks on both the left and right get so upset with folks liking something they don't. Why not be happy with what you like but try to force your dislike on others

Obviously you are doing the usual Shawn thing of completely, absolutely, positively, REFUSING REFUSING REFUSING to understand a very basic analogy.  (My underarm deodorant, my granola bars...stick shifts...etc etc etc...are not made because people don't like them, and maybe they have ever resorted to writing the stores and manufacturers threatening to take their business elsewhere if they are sold at particular stores.  I JUST DON'T KNOW.  The point is that the market rejects things I like ALL THE TIME for MANY different reasons.)

I'm sorry you are so upset at the fact that there is no such thing as the right to be seen/heard, and that you are 100% okay with freedom of expression, unless of course people use that freedom to express dislike of something, in which case you hate that freedom.

For the millionth time, if this is the GOVERNMENT pulling something off the air for some reason, let me know.  But since we are talking about PRIVATE CITIZENS, I'm not losing any sleep.

That's the thing. You don't know!!

I DO KNOW that people threaten sponsors to shows all time time. I never said I was not okay with their freedom of expression, I just disagree with it. So once again I am not asking you to lose sleep I am simply asking you why you think one person trying to take away a program from somebody else just because the don't like it.

Le Sigh Part Deux

Well, Shawn, I don't think the world revolves around me, for one thing.  For another...well, you very cheerfully refuse to consider another example.  The Beavis and Butt-head example I used on the previous thread.  That was literally ONE PERSON (and an attorney) who killed a key portion of Beavis's shtick.  ONE PERSON.  Did I throw a temper tantrum about it?  No.  I rolled my eyes at it, but I kept on going with my life, and kept watching the show.

Again, when the GOVERNMENT is doing this, let me know.  When PRIVATE citizens go to advertisers or other PRIVATE individuals...so f-ing what?  People do NOT have the freedom to be seen/heard.

Canada's election

So, Canada has a majority "Conservative" government led by Stephen Harper.  Ignatieff resigns.  Gee, ya think?  He, Layton and Duceppe gambled and lost...well, Layton is now the Official Opposition in Canada as head of the NDP.  So he got something out of it.

Harper can sit tight as PM until 2 May 2016 now...

That had to hurt...

The Canadian election as much as I did. I suspected this would happen. I knew Ignatieff was an idiot and really didn't understand Canada. Layton however is from Toronto and therefore is in the 'official' opposition.

Hey fellow Canadian

Harper might be one of the biggest liberal killers of all time. 2 minorities now a majority. He did this by concentrating on fiscal issues and not social. American conservatives can learn from this.

But I have to ask anyway. Why would anyone HATE Alberta? I've been there, the people are friendly. Have great places like Banff and Jasper.. Good hunting and fishing..great skiing. Plus they have a great natural resource in the tar sands. So please explain whats not to like?

Here's why

I like Alberta too.  Beautiful province.  I've driven through it.  Alberta helps fill my tank, as you pointed out.  And Grande Prairie (been there) gave Canada and the world Cheryl Bernard.

Shawn would deeply hate Alberta for its social conservatism.

Obamas birth certificate

Obama being born in the US has never been a big issue for me and he provided a certificate of live birth this morning

However I heard something interesting this morning on a local radio show and I never thought about before and this could be huge

If Obamas birth certificate is real, it said his Dad was Kenyen. His mother was only 18 at te time of his birth. Doesnt the law say she needs to be 19 to give citizen rights to any children?

Having been born in the United States, Obama enjoys birthright citizenship. Your scenario is only significant if the child's citizenship is derivatively established via parentage.

However, there are those who insist that Obama is still not a "natural born citizen" for the purposes of presidential eligibility regardless of his place of birth since it also requires--in their view--that both parents be citizens. And Obama's father clearly wasn't a citizen.

But there's no way Obama is going to be removed from office or barred from a second term on the basis of that theoretical argument.

Whatever Sentry

If the Canucks lose on game 7 I will have nothing but humble pie. If they win and advance to the second round I will do a little bit of gloating.

If they make it out of the second round I will do even more gloating

However if they play your Wings in the third round and advance to the Stanley Cup Final, my gloating towards you Sentry will be on par with Mike Bratton gloating about his favorite subject which is himself to his favorite person which is himself in front of a mirror. :-p

You mad Shawn?

I think I stated above I hate Chicago and am actually rooting for your Nucks. They are SUPPOSED to beat the 8th seed. They are SUPPOSED to win the cup. If you think I have been gloating about your teams total collapse the last three games, that wasn't intended. I could really could care less what happens most of the time but I do have a special dislike of the Blackhawks and was really hoping your team would end them. I do hope you have something to gloat about after the next game and onward because unless your team wins the cup, you won't have much to gloat about, even if they beat the Wings. If they do win the cup and I get a big dose of gloating Shawn, I can always fall back on 11 to 1, still got a ways to go.

My fall back is 11 to ??

The Sharks are good no doubt. We should all be healthy so as I read on the Puck Daddy Blog..

"Henrik Zetterberg(notes) and Johan Franzen(notes) will be ready for the Detroit Red Wings in Round 2. And then you will witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station.
-from Puck Daddy blog

If Howard plays like he did in game 4, we'll be okay.

San Jose huh? Been to the HP four times. In Sac town now. Don't make me come over there : )

Within 45 minutes of each other even though they suck we got the Raiders, the Niners, and the Golden State Warriors.

We also have teams that don't suck like the A's and the World Champion Giants and the Sharks.

Hope you enjoy your Kings. That is ......if they don't leave town ;-)

If I want a pollster's opinion, I'd ask him.

So, in other words, YOU don't know.

My judgment isn't coming from polls - to be perfectly honest with you, though I suppose it is child's play to do on the Internet - I haven't seen a single poll on this election.  My judgment is coming from my personal reading of the tea leaves from the Canadian media and other Canadian sources.

It's hard to judge the outcome sometimes without polls

For example in the last election in California, I would have thought Whitman would beat Brown and Prop 19 would pass. If it was not for the polls I would not have guessed the outcome.

Polls are an extremely poor substitute for reading the tea leaves yourself.  And here you really have no excuse.  In fact, if anyone here should be looking at the polls, I should be, because I have zero connections to Canada.

In fact, you have no excuse for using polls to call CA issues and elections either; you live there too!

I dont know what momentum either party has without the help of polls. Polls can be flawed but when polls are done for am period of time, they are usually correct. That is why trust them.

One word:

Laziness.  Pure and simple.

Unsane with a due respect

How am I being lazy? You did not ask me who I wanted to win, you asked who I thought would win. Canadian elections are even harder to predict than American ones because you do not vote directly for Prime Minister you vote for your "riding"

I know you say you want me to think for myself, but what would you have me do?
