Welcome to the Next NewsBusters

Matthew Sheffield's picture

We're finally here. Welcome to the new NewsBusters site design! Please have a look around and tell us your thoughts. There are still a few bugs to be worked out and we'll be squishing them like crazy so please post any you may see in this blog post. Credit for the design of our fancy new digs goes to NB member mrshy, aka Michael Miller who worked with us to come up with this new look.

There are a few features we're going to be turning on such as more editorial cartoons and also columns from writers like Cal Thomas, Michele Malkin and others but most of the heavy lifting is done already.

Thanks especially to those of our readers who helped us finance this upgrade. Your support was critical to the project!

Way too much going on, especially on the home page. And something is conflicting with my browser(Firefox), because now the pages stick when scrolling up and down.

Hi StarAZ, Most modern

Submitted by AJ on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 2:56pm.

Hi StarAZ, Most modern browsers allow you to zoom in, expanding text and imagery so that they are easier to see. You should be able to use this feature on Newsbusters.org and any other website you visit. In Firefox and Internet Explorer 8, you can increase, decrease, or reset the zoom by utilizing the options found under "View" and then the "Zoom" menu. I regularly use zoom as some of the intranet websites at my place of employment use really small text and I have two very large monitors.

I was just coming back here as I do in a day and then thought, oh, ick, then I came anyhow. What you put here is too complicated for me--I am not a computer operator. I use the AOL explorer..I don't want big horsy type everyplace I go...would I get that ....

Also--I can't see a way to comment, only reply. I may try again tomorrow...and then you guys may be rid of me...don't cheer at once.

Some problems

Submitted by dscott on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 4:29am.

1. Access denied to inbox

2. Can not find the track function to see if there are any new responses on threads.  The loss of this function will force unnecessary extra clicks and tie up the site.

3. Need to have the "Search" box choice at the top selection bar to mirror the selection bar at the bottom of the page.

4. Need to move the Save/Share bar with the twitter, facebook, etc. icons away from the Read More button as you get nuisance accidential wrong selections due to the close proximity of the buttons.

Submitted by Apache on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:35am.

I thought that was a PITA way to see replies in the first place. But it was the only way. It would be nice if one of these side boxes showed 'subscribed' topics activity. Often once a story is off the first page, I lose interest and stop looking at replies because it's not very convenient to check but also because the arguments get a little repetitious.

Ditto on what dscott said, tracking is an essential tool that most of the regulars use.

We would also like to see the comments and recent comments count at the bottom.

Can we expand the recent comments to the 10 (or more) is was before?  And make it available on every page.

Also having the choice of how the thread is listed, was very nice.  (70 comments, then a new page?)

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 4:48am.

Well, for a techno dummy like me......it's just more work and something new to get used to. I don't know what was wrong with your other set-up, to tell you the truth!!! And it's not as easy to do the posts and replies and keep track of that type of thing, as far as I can tell. I really didn't have any problems with your previous set-up.........it was easy to figure things out and read and find out who, where, why, how, and when things were being commented on...............

Maybe you're working on that??? I wouldn't know. As I said, I'm not the kind of guy who thinks that something has to be changed, or made 'new'., or whatever. I've always liked the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' attitude...................

It takes some getting used to, but it was more than likely done for a reason.

Maybe by making the posting part a little more complicated the can stop the spammers. A few nights ago, some guy selling Nike's was firing two adds off every minute or so, probably screws with the server.

Also, there are alot of people who read and don't comment, so maybe the layout is helpful to them and they may become posters as well.

I know it looks odd, kinda Halloween-ish in the color scheme, but we'll get used to it.

They're also gonna work out the bugs as it progresses, computer programming and all that isn't easy. If it were, we'd all be millionaires in India by now.

Not liking it.

Submitted by NeoKong on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 4:48am.

What is with the giant empty sidebars...?  They take up too much space with nothing.

The front page is too cluttered with stuff that is not information.   My whole screen was filled but I could only see two stories.

Not liking the NB Extra in the middle of the page.

Personally I like too read left to right and not up and down.  Smaller boxes side by side seem more efficient.

For example, when I click onto Mediaite or Hot Air  or Daily Caller I can peruse at least a dozen stories without having to scroll down too far.

I only say this because you asked for feedback.  I like the other format better.  This format makes us dig for information. It seemed rather cluttered.

The story column is too big in my opinion.

Since you are re-working everything  how about a quote button...? That would be nice.

I notice you removed  the center text  button too.

Don't like  Save/ Preview. I like the  words "Post" or "Submit Comment" better.

Just saying.

Submitted by DontFeedTheTrolls on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 9:17am.

Wow, I don't like it. Not at all. Lots of wasted, empty space, cramped articles, too wide sidebars, no count of comments/new comments (really used the old 'new comments' button a lot, A LOT),  'saved/share' bar is useless and crappy and 'in your face', oh, did I mention lots of wasted, empty space?  Couldn't you have 'layered' everything, you know, like an article, then NewsBusted, then an article, then NB Picks, then an article, etc.?Sorry, all change isn't good. I felt kinda bad I couldn't give any money (been out of work for more than a year), now I'm glad I didn't, would feel cheated.

Just noticed, no 'Search' button up top, and when you find it (at the bottom) it doesn't give you any results. Oh, and did I mention the WASTED SPACE? Looking again at the Homepage, i am doubly disappointed, 3 columns, side by side, when all I (selfish me!) want is the articles. I rarely, rarely, use any links that are crammed in there, I haven't watched NewsBusted in ages, NB picks means nothing to me, Comments I frequently use. But no 'New Comments' button? Come on, did you guys do any market research?

Worst thing, we are now stuck with this format, once change arrives, it refuses to change. And where is the new content? Is the new NewsBusters all about style instead of substance? Do i sound bitter? Lol

Well I took another look, and am still very disappointed.  I can find nothing to praise about the new look. I almost never use any of the links/items in the rightmost columns, and I don't think I am alone. Facebook? Amazon? Twitter? Link after link after link? No thank you. Oh, and did I mention all the wasted space?

More importantly, I am glad I am finally able to log-in to the comments section again. I lost my password about a year ago and every time I attempted to reset the password, I was instructed to follow the instructions in an email that would never arrive.

Now if I can only reset my password to Hot Air.

Addendum: One thing I might add is that there is a lot of wasted space on my monitor. I have a widescreen monitor so it may not look the same to everyone, but the two dark orange areas take up a significant amount of real estate.

For those of us with vision

Submitted by ampul man on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 6:12am.

For those of us with vision imparements, the new format is more difficult to read (lighter and 'finer' font).  As I am typing this post, the text is black, in sharp contrast and easy on the eyes.

I don't know what it will look like when it's posted.

Also, there is no explanation of what input is desired in the 'free email alerts' box.  First, I just clicked on the button thinking that I would be directed to a sign up page, and got a 'page not found' message.  Next, I inserted the word, Congress:  also, a similar message.  What gives?

In all fairness, I only spent a brief minute on the home page before coming here (to post), but so far, am disappointed.

FYI, using Firefox.

Concur with ampul man

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 7:34am.

I'm fairly new to NB so take this for what it is worth...

Ampul man said, " For those of us with vision imparements,..." and I couldn/t agree more.

Not all of us here are in our 20's-30's anymore and whether we like it or not our vision changes over the years.  As I am typing this, I can barely see the words (must be that arial typeface in the comments block ).  The lettering is so small I can only think it was designed by a lawyer with a grudge against people who have not invested in his magnifying glass company.    Please go back to using black lettering and get rid of this gray stuff.

Thanks... Take it for what it is worth to help improve.

Just one more thing...

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 11:08am.

I hate to sound like a cheap version of Peter Falk as Colombo, but… Excuse me sir,  I’m wondering why the replies to the posts are numbered?

Now this is also a little experiment on my part in which I am replying to my own post   (number 22 at this time) which was a reply to a post by ampul man (post #21).  I am curious as to whether this post gets numbered 23….

I grant you this is a minor point, but doesn’t it seem to make sense to only number the original user comment with replies to the members either having no numbers and simply indentations (preferred) or using a traditional outline numbering system for the sub-replys?

OK, OK… I know I’m sounding like liberal “process improvement over accomplishment” type, but would you mind addressing this important national problem?  - Do it for the children!

Submitted by miss911ninja on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 12:10pm.

I tried to "bold" this type for your reading pleasure Grumpy, but the way it looks now on my screen I did not succeed.

I also think the numbering system is odd. What purpose does it serve, exactly? It can't help us track comments with pinpoint accuracy because the numbers will change as comments are added. And why is the number in bold black as opposed to the orange of the comment title? For me, the black draws more attention, which makes it seem as if the number is more important than the title!

At this point I'm thinking I want my donation back! But maybe if the web masters address all of these complaints we'll eventually get our money's worth.

Just one more thing (Pt.2)

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 12:16pm.

Are you deliberately trying to play mind games with us?

You have already caused me to break two of my basic rules… (1) Never reply to your own post… use the edit button instead, and (2) Never take Maalox before 10 am (local).

It wasn’t 30 minutes ago that my reply to ampul mans post #21 was assigned #22 and my experiment was supposed to be numbered 23… Who knows what it is by now!.

(Sigh) Let me explain how numbering works in the civilized world:

The Original Story (Post) is presented by NB

The first User Comment on the original story is assigned the Number (or I. for those of you who prefer using Roman Numerals when figuring your taxes).

The Reply to User Comment #1 is assigned the # 1.1 (or 1 (a) ) or some other easily deciphered alpha/numeric configuration.

Subsequent replies to the original story are assigned whole numbers (in sequence of their occurrences – such as 2, 3, 4, etc.),

Replies to a User Comment are numbered using the whole number reply (i.e.: 1.1 is followed by 1.2 is followed by 1.3…)

Replies to a reply are numbered  using the same logic (i.e.: 1.1.1 - 1.1.2  - 1.1.3 – and on and on).

I hope this helps.

P.S. Question: Why does the DTG (date/time group) change when making edits to ones own post… shouldn’t the DTG be the same as the original?

P.P.S.  Please don’t make me break another personal rule: “Never take a drink until at least noon (local time).   :o]

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 1:42pm.

You know who I really feel sorry for with this new design?  The person who made a great point about the Original Article, but their comment won't be seen if it shows up on "Page 2" or beyond. (By the way the numbering system starts over with #1 on subsequent pages).

Here's a serious question for all:  (Note: USE THIS REPLY as an EXAMPLE) What is to prevent someone who comes along just like I have done here... Instead of posting their own comment on the original subject (in fair order), just start posting posting as a  reply to someone else' comment?   For instance, what if I had made this a reply to the very first post... wouldn't that mean this comment would be viewed as the second comment on the entire thread?   That seem's a bit unfair to all and certainly impedes polite discourse.

I'm sorry to all who have had their comments bumped to page two just to point-out this glaring error.

The last time they had to do an upgrade of some kind, the comment pages were split up (according to some commenting limit) too, but they corrected that. They'll fix it again, I'm sure.

We're in a live beta phase here, I guess. Things will improve.

I also think the font/type for the comments should return to "san serif" (simple, like helvetica) and not remain this serif-y, fancy font -- which is suitable for articles, yes, but not here.

Funny, when I enlarge the text on my Mac

Submitted by Boudin on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 9:11am.

As I scroll down, it reverts back to the old size. I have never had this problem before. In-fact I just tried it elsewhere, with no problems?

I like the way it looks, but like everyone else, I would like to see NB's old features back in place. It is what makes this site special.

Can't Survive

Submitted by miss911ninja on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 12:27pm.

I have a Mac too, and I was wondering if that's why the bold and italics features wouldn't work for me. I'm only half computer literate, so I thought it might have something to do with my browser. I switched over to Firefox from Safari, but the Gods didn't like that and switched me back to Safari automatically!

I just don't think I can survive without the ability to bold, and especially to use italics.    :- (

because I'm heading off to work. Much of the criticism above is valid and a look more like what's shown in the BLOGS section would please most users- with the addition of the Recent Comments bar on every page, along with the Who's Onliine bar.

My concerns are largely with the comment section. Ckeditor allows many more features than what we have here, and I'd like to see those features added.

  • Spell check- cause I'ma dummy
  • Greater control over justification
  • Underline, strikeout, and blockquote buttons since most of us aren't HTML code writers
  • and a simpler hyperlink adder-thingy. I liked being able to select "Open in another window" without having to remember to click through the tabs to find it.

Scuba Dude created a forum thread last nite about this and there are many more comments there.

Appearance-wise though, I like it. Nice job Shy-man. Good luck NB! And don't take it personally...

I am to blame for the lighter font.... I designed this site. However, the size of the font should be larger, I agree. And the comment font should be simple and not fancy like the articles.

Actually, I think the comment font/type should be like it was on the old site, and the article can be the more elegant light/fancy font, which was sort of my design.

I would like it if the site would adjust itself to whatever monitor (screen resolution) people are using. Basically I have a 24" monitor with a resolution of 1920x1200. so for me right now its a band down the middle and lots of wasted room on the sides.

Page Is Way Too Small Too Read

Submitted by packman on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:16am.

I have to agree.  I have a thin page in the middle of my computer screen with a lot of wasted space on both sides.  Not sure why it was designed this way?  But it definitely makes everything harder to read as all the text is now much smaller.  Give us older readers a break huh?  At least the old pages were easy to read.  Still not sure why such a makeover was needed, as I liked what you had before...so why change it?

With the old NewsBusters (NB

Submitted by Beukeboom on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:05am.

With the old NewsBusters (NB v1) a person who posted a comment on an article could keep up with new comments on the article via their account information. It would indicate how many new comments had been made since the participant left their comment and new comments would be indicated by " *NEW ". However I do not see that option on the new NewsBusters (NB v2). Is that available someplace else and if not, would it be possible to add it to NB v2?

Secondly, are the older articles still available? If so, how do we go back a page to see them? The only thing at the bottom of the opening page is the option of "more blogs" and not "more articles" or "previous articles."

Submitted by Chris M-G on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:20am.

The first thing I noticed is a minor gripe compared to some of the previous comments, but I am accustomed to tabbing all of the articles I will be reading, and I do that by right clicking the large black article name text. (uh oh, was that racist?) The browser's link preview is correct, but the context menu treats it like an image. I have to use the tiny "Read More" link at the bottom to actually reach the page link using that method.

My first impressions

Submitted by mom_rox on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:30am.

Since you asked - my first impressions:

  • definitely missing the comments/new comments tracker
  • comments section has TOO MUCH WHITE SPACE between paragraphs - too much scrolling
  • not a fan of the comments font either - I'm nearsighted (meaning I do not need reading glasses, yet ;), and this font is hard to read - too fine
  • I also have a widescreen display - if that space can be used for something extra, that would be great.
  • Please change the Save button on the comments page to Submit.

  • My biggest pet peeve:
scrolling - the comments page used to be ONE PAGE ONLY - now they are divided into pages. Until TPTB put in a "next page button" on my keyboard, then keep all comments on one page, so all I have to do is use my page down button.
I very much dislike having to precisely place my mouse over a very small "next page" link. For that reason, I will probably not scroll to page 2, etc. to read all the comments.

Commenting on my post above

Submitted by mom_rox on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:38am.

The first line of "Since you asked..." is hard to read - shows up as gray, not black.

I like the font used in the bulleted sections - I can read this font very easily - no eye strain.

Drudge Report uses the entire screen, including a widescreen display. Can't the NewsBusters site do something similar?

I'd also like a spellcheck option.

Spell check

Submitted by Chaitealover on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 5:23pm.

I use Firefox, but I think this works in most, if not all, browsers:

Click on "Switch to plain text editor" under the comment box and it will change the box to one that shows misspelled words underlined in red. Right click on the misspelled words for suggestions for the correct word or the ability to add the correctly spelled, but unknown to the dictionary, word to your computer for the next time you use it.

Your "since you asked" line isn't gray on my screen. Have you set your browser to use the site's colors or something you set up in tools/options/content/colors?

new comments old comments

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 9:17am.

Interesting look.  I hope you guys will have the "# new comments" back because that's been very helpful.

As for the $30,000 that some might be wondering about, it's not just on the appearance that someone had commented on.  Working in a tech environment gives me a bit of insight on the money costs.  Servers and hard drives(or hard drive arrays which are necessary for the amount of info and etc a place like this has) aren't cheap if they were getting new equipment.  Most servers and hard drive arrays will cost in the neighborhood of around $10-20,000.  Then there's maintenance contracts depending on which brand of server they got, be it Dell, HP, and so on, those are typically in the thousands as well, $1500 or more for a 3 year service contract depending on the desired service.  Finally, software adds to the cost and the support for that as well.

I've been down this road before at work whenever we get new things, be it software or hardware or both and there's always a breaking-in period(or for those in the military, a shakedown).

We as users should be patient because the breaking-in time is always a stressful time for those who have to maintain/operate this sort of thing.

Technology and software has come a long ways in the last 20 years, but the standard problems never went away.  Just my two cents before currency correction.

A few nits to pick

Submitted by Model850 on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 9:39am.

I agree with others who have complained about the "Read More" link being crowded by the "Share/Save" bar. Too easy to overshoot Read More and have that (annoying) share box jump out at you. Move the Share/Save bar to the left margin. Still accessible to those who want it but out of the way of what most readers want to hit.

What?!!? No more comments counter for articles?!? Foul! That was a very useful reference that enabled a reader to quickly spot if any new posts had appeared since the article was last visited. If NB does nothing else to change the changes, please add back that feature!

Also miss the Track function for user account. Also useful but now MIA.

Haven't navigated around the new design enough yet to pick any more nits.

Don't mean to be too critical because I enjoy NB, but you asked....

OK. I just now found the comments counters on the BLOG page. Weird. But I'd still like that feature on the HOME page with new articles.

The new format and layout is going to take a while to disgest while I navigate around figuring out the user interface. But right now I'm getting the feeling this was more "change for change's sake" than anything else. I donated -- and I don't regret doing so -- but early in the "new" experience I'm not seeing a whole lot of bang for the buck. Sorry.

Yes, the new changes have a good look but it's the content that counts!!!   I don't know of anyone who visits a site because it looks good! In my radio days, I once did an early morning TV newscast. The news director was all excited about a  new set being planned. After many bucks, it finally made its appearance. Yes, it was nicer but I don't recall anyone saying they were watching the channel because of the new look. Remember It will always be content, content, content, even though many seem obsessed by change when new is always better !!!

Why Do People Come to the Site?

Submitted by tatej on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 10:13am.

The articles.  But with the new design, the articles have seemingly been relegated to an afterthought.  The main body is now divided into three columns, with the articles using only 1/3 of the main body.  The middle third seems to be links, while the right third seems to be "other stuff".  Then with the huge empty borders on the left and right, the main body only takes up 3/5 of the screen.  So essentially, the reason people visit the site - the articles - only occupy 1/5 of the screen.  Not a fan of the redesign.

I liked the old format so much I was always using it as an example to other blogs. This one, not so much. I always used the "track" function, I even have it bookmarked by itself. And the notation of new vs total comments is important, who has time to re-read everything to see if anyone added new information? I'm most interested in the articles, they should be the most prominent thing on the page, not just a small part of it. I'd love it if the "Read More" link led to the next line in the article instead of back to the top.

Submitted by Dave. on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 10:55am.

...to be hideously dangerous, so I'm not sure how much "modification" is possible here, but here goes. 1) There needs to be a little more vertical separation between the "read more" link and the "share/save" link, as they are too close together. 2) Don't really miss the # of guests dislplay, but the "whose online" was nice, and it would be nice to see it on every page. 3) I like the fact that the "recent comments" list can be expanded, but only having five on the front page isn't enough, as if you go to refill your coffee cup, they have all been replaced once you return. It would also be nice to see this on every page, as it was before. 4) I, like most here, miss the "tracking" feature, as it helps to quickly ID trolls and possible plants. It also helps in following up on previous comments, even thpough I don't have as much time for that as I used to. 5) The "Save" button needs to be renaimed "Post." I mean, if it ain't broke... That pretty much is it for my list of nits at the moment. I do like the expandable text window (when I can actually get the rich text editor working - but that is more on my end then NB's). -Dave

I agree with all of your points and...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 1:23pm.

would like to add a few others...The text size in general is a bit small and the gray colored comments text is way too light in color...It's harder to read.  As you and others have said, the "tracking" feature was great to have and I'd really like to see that back. Also, the short list of recent comments is frustrating...It needs to be expanded...Not nearly enough recent comments are listed.  And why has the comment counter been removed from the home page and now can only be found under "Blogs" ? Don't like that.

As others here have already rightly said, a good deal of what has been changed falls under the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" category. Some of the changes are good, but a number of them weren't necessary and are proving to be annoying and frustrating. One additional issue...When I click on "inbox" on the home page, I am still getting the "Access Denied" page...Will it remain that way? Right now the way I get to my inbox is to have to go to My Account, click on "send this user a message", and then I finally can access my messages...What's the point of having an inbox link on the home page if we are going to only see "Access Denied"? Is this a bug? I hope so, because otherwise I don't understand why we still have an inbox link...It doesn't make any sense. For right now, that's about it. I know this overhaul took a lot of time (and money), and I definitely appreciate everyone's hard work, but I would like to see the questions and problems that I and others have raised here, addressed.

Thanks for your help...Someone last night suggested what you did, and that's how I've been doing it so far...I hope this isn't the way we are supposed to get into our inbox from now on...It makes no sense to give an inbox link button, only to get "Access Denied" when you click on it.

Please do let me know if you figure out how to get to "sent items"...That would be nice to be able to do.

Update! Inbox is working! I just clicked on "inbox", and it took me right to it! YAY! Also, the sent messages are on the same page as the received messages...They appear one after the other as you read down the page, so there is not a separate button to click on to get "sent messages".

Addendum: I just noticed that when comments span more than one page the numbering scheme starts over at 1. That's confusing. It makes it appear at first that you accidentally posted to the wrong thread if your new comment gets posted to a new page.

Nice work, Matt

Submitted by Blonde on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 11:52am.

I know this was a long drawn out process and a huge amount of work.

Okay, a couple of suggestions.

  1. Change the "new" for new comments back to "*New".  Using my Browser's search function is a nuisance for such a common text string as "new".  The Asterick narrows it down.
  2. I like the numbering of the comments, but the number should be attached to each comment in a chronological fashion instead of top to bottom in a threaded page.  The numbers seem to change.  If each comment was assigned it's chronological number, even in a threaded page one could very easily follow a poster's chronology (I'm thinking trolls here, Matt).
  3. My roller mouse seems to hang on the page here, doesn't happen in other applications.  I'm running FireFox for NB today.
  4. I'd like to see you answer some of the questions posed here (and over in the Forums yesterday as the update was rolled out)....or at least address some of the bigger issues in a new post.
  5. We need 300 comments a page functionality back.
  6. Move the "share" buttons to the far left under each comment.  Most of us mouse (verb?) down the middle of the page to get to the reply, and the share buttons pop annoyingly.

Thanks again for a great job, I'm sure it will work great once the kinks are ironed out.

Even Worse

Submitted by Clyde Gatton on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 1:46pm.

Hey Blonde!

Even worse, the numbering is page specific, and changes not only when a reply is done above any comment, but also restarts at 1 when they reach a new page point!

Totally off the track: Sean got back from Iraq last Thursday/Friday. I no longer have any sons out of country.

Miss his *ahem* beating of the trolls.

I kind of like the number function, but it needs to be fixed to the post, IMO.  That way, if the thread gets to far gone to the right....we can say "hey #42, over here" on a new line.

I have great faith the NB staff will get it all tweaked out, tho.

Nice to see you here, Clyde.

Sorry but this new format Sucks! The font is too light - should be darker. No tracking of comments. Your links aren't working properly - tried to "see all" of other sites but just brings up homepage. the pictures are smaller. clicking on the hot topics does nothing. Really, you should ask for your money back.

The thing that made NewsBusters unique is gone.

Submitted by The Vet on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 12:35pm.

The new look is nice and spiffy but the thing that made NewsBusters stand out is gone.

I could go to any website on the internet and have my comment buried along with hundreds of others. What made NewsBusters unique was the ability to respond both to the blog contributor and other posters. Then come back later and find what had been posted in the blog without having to reread everything that was already written. Nor did I have to try and remember exactly what I had responded to a few days ago, it was all there in the tracking page.

Many websites have replies placed under a post, but the tracking function is what set NewsBusters apart. You got a new spiffy look but without the tracking function, Newsbusters has been fudamentally altered.

I hate to say it but if this is the final product, you have taken the wind out of my sails. I am not enthused about posting and without the tracking function and history of old comments, my troll bashing abilities are completely negated, And I really liked troll bashing. Nothing more fun than exposing a liberal troll in a lie. That is near impossible now.

So Many Comments, So Little Space/Time

Submitted by Clyde Gatton on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 1:02pm.

As a programmer, I understand the difficulties of making everything work “out of the box.”
As a designer, I understand the difficulties of pleasing everyone even part of the time.
As a user, I don’t like seeing things changed that worked for me, because a designer wants “change.”

That being said, here is my take on the new NB design.

The first thing I saw when I entered last night was the home page layout, and I was not pleased. Here are the reasons:

  • Page does not scale to fit monitor resolution.  No, the middle and right columns should not expand to fit the width, but the ‘meat and potatoes’ left hand column certainly should fill the available space.
  • Hot Topics list seems a wee bit out of date and doesn’t function.
  • While I understand you need advertising, why are there 3 places to join twitter and Facebook, and 2 for Amazon Kindle? You have them in the advertising header above the masthead and above the Who’s Who of NewsBusters, while Facebook appears In its own little box, ‘Find us on Facebook,’ and twitter has its third spot at the bottom of the ‘#nbpicks’ box. Speaking of which
  • What the heck does ‘#nbpicks’ mean? Yes, it is the ‘#’ I’m questioning, lol.
  • Clutter, clutter, clutter

Here’s my take on fixing it.

Move the following center and right column items into the right side background, from top to bottom, adjust width as required

  • Jodi Miller and NewsBusted
  • User shortcuts – make this double wide to match box above it
  • Recent Comments – allow at least 10
  • Today’s Top Articles
  • NB Picks – note title instead of tag, lol
  • NBEXTRA
  • CNS News

Move the remaining center and right column items into the left side background, from top to bottom, adjust widths as required/desired

  • NewsBusters’ Who’s Who and Copyright notice
  • Other Sites
  • All other advertising, join links, etc, as desired
  • Ditch the anti-social site links, since they’re already above the masthead

Benefits are

  • All these can remain when shifting from tab to tab, since they will be on background and not in area being changed, and there will actually be room to see and do what the site promotes.
  • Adjusting for screen resolution will simply narrow the main viewing area as the center of the background contracts. The background sidebar stuff will remain exactly as is no matter where in the site you are, thus answering a lot of my and other posters’ complaints, such as always being able to see Recent Comments, increasing the number of recent comments, etc.

Next I navigated to the account page and logged in. Oh, boy! As others have noted, the loss of the tracking tab is really disappointing, and serves no discernable purpose, nor does the loss of the ability to preset a signature.  The latter is particularly egregious, in that it was replaced with the ability to upload a picture. While a picture may allow you to identify us in a police lineup, our signatures provide you with a snapshot look at our thoughts, and that’s really what this site is about. Then, to find the user control panel, I had to scroll to the bottom and look for the smallest box on the page! That was really unacceptable. When I go to my account I want to make changes, check on things of concern to only me, etc. While Jodi is easy on the eyes, this is not her place, lol.  Implementing the suggestions from the home page discussion will fix all issues I have here, with the exception of the missing signature and tracking tab.

Finally I looked at the Blogs and Forum tabs. Once again, implementing the earlier suggestions will fix most of my issues here, since they are in large part the same ones, namely clutter and lack of space for the purpose of the site. Additionally I’d like some consistency in the layout. An initial forum entry and a blog posting are functionally equivalent, and should look the same, IMHO, as should the comments/replies. Specifically, and if nothing else, I would like to see the ‘on line’ button seen on the forum comments to be also seen on the Blog comments. I assume this works as a little glow indicator of the status of the poster, and as such might alleviate the requests for a ‘who’s online’ listing. It would for me, since in general I want to know if the poster of a particular comment is online, not a complete listing of all who are online. As such, I would also like a green/red, online/offline glow…and maybe a lobster dinner for my birthday… :o)

New web design: Ugh

Submitted by Captain Kirock on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 1:20pm.

This is the third time I have tried to use the new website and I have to say I do not like it.

1. Where is the track feature?

2. How do I access previous pages?  The old site had page numbers at the bottom which were very useful.

3. Why is there so much dead space on the right and left of the margins of the screen? Is this just my browser settings or are these spaces reserved for ads?

4. Articles need to be more prominent.

5. Why is the font so small?

6. Where aren't the number of comments listed for each article?

7. Can someone explain the difference between the home page and the blogs?

They are working on making the site expandable to meet your browser width, which will go a long way toward making the comments more like they used to be.

They'll also do various tweaks to the article-commenting function/appearance of the site in general -- something that means a lot to the users here, we know -- in the coming weeks.

Submitted by Wrathful Brunette on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 1:45pm.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who thinks that the articles don't get the kind of prominence they should. Being squeezed over into a little space on the left makes them look like an afterthought. They should get 60% of the available space and be placed prominently in the center. The sidebars filled with other crap we hardly use should be on each side so all the crap we hardly use isn't so jammed together that we can't pick out what we want.

Again:

1. Font too small and light.

2. Need Recent Comments on every page.

3. Need Track function.

4. New comments link for the articles.

5. Need the archived comments for past articles!!

6. Way too much wasted space.

7. Ugly colors. Sorry, but it is. Ugly.

If the site had worked/looked like this when I first started reading it I wouldn't have stuck around.

8. watch the post # change with each new post( makes it difficult to follow a debate)

9. second page starts of with #1 instead of #71

10. The text is too small for people with bifocals( hence the bold)

11. No offense to Blonde, but I hate all this ORANGE!

12. Most of the prominant boxes are irrelevant to most of us and take up too much space.

I don't feel right complaining on the new format because I have not been an NB member long enough to have that privilege. But if this is the final product of the new format it will lose the unique draw NB had over dozens of other sites that all basically look the same. ;-(

NB's not ignoring these comments and complaints -- a majority of which revolve around articles and comments, naturally -- and things will improve.

As I point out above, they're working on returning the site to being expandable according to your browser, which will make a whale of a difference (It's really at the heart of all the anxieties here, like "what's all this wasted space?", "articles and comments are squeezed out", etc..) But the coding/development for that takes some time.

As to the colors and so much orange (and brown, on the outside :p) and the site looking "boxy", again, I think the fluid/expandable version will make the site much more pleasing to the eye, and intuitive and enjoyable for NB users.

I also think the comment headlines are unnecessarily big, and don't need to be orange. I designed the core of the site, but was not involved in the comment section reformatting. "I take no responsibility for that." :p

Temporarily safe from scalping. I assume your post to mean that many of the new features will be "tweaked" as time allows. I will try to be patient tho not a fav at my age.

Here is another complaint maybe not in your dept. Mathew says that other writers will be contributors, like Cal Thomas and Michelle Malkin. If their articles are regarding Media Bias then thats fine. If they are just throwing in columns from other sites that will only again deminish what NB is all about, Exposing Liberal Media Bias., which is what made NB so enticing. To throw in other contributors with a multitude of other issues, there are thousands of other web sites that do that.

To the former, to the best of my inside knowledge, yes, they are feverishly working to fix the nuts and bolts of the user-important features -- mainly, articles and our responses/comments to them, and our great debate threads and how they look/function.

To the latter, no, this is not my department. However, I was somewhat aware of NB needing to eventually integrate a bit more with these other sites, as we are increasingly getting so much attention on major media outlets. I, along with the NB admins, am aware of what makes this site unique, and balancing inevitable change and needed upgrading to play with the big boys whilst not compromising what sets us apart, is not an easy feat.

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 2:21pm.

One thing on the old NB that has been carried over to the new NB is finding the "new" comments when you have more than 1 page of comments.  Unless you had your preference set for showing the newest first (which I did not) you had to scroll through all the comments on the following pages and try to eyeball the newest ones.

Is it possible for the new comments to reset after you left the blog and not when you go to the next page?

I'm not 71, and I don't like change either. ;)

Although I can appreciate all the hard work/time/tinkering involved with a massive undertaking like this and am thinking this is not the final product...

I do have to say that I REALLY. REALLY, REALLY miss the tracking function (I'm kind of lost without that organizational tool). I also do miss being able to see the new comments/PM notices on the Home Page, as this saves a lot of time.  And although I don't personally have a problem with the colors/font size, I do think complaints from those who need a larger font size (in the blogs) should be taken seriously.

For me, if you get a tracker function on (similar to the old one) and WIDEN the blog/article section to what should be its due space, I feel like that would solve two of the biggest concerns for many.

It would be true to say that so far, I like the old format much better. But in full disclosure, I'm also an old-fashioned type of girl who would probably still be using a typewriter -- if I could! :)

Lastly, I noticed that I spent a lot less time viewing the web site.  Maybe its because I am unaccoustomed to the new design.  Maybe it's because there are less front-page stories.  Maybe it's because I feel like I'm wading through a lot of clutter.  Regardless, I would be really concerned if you notice your time spent viewing decreases dramatically.

I like the newness factor,

Submitted by LighthouseJ on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 6:14pm.

I like the newness factor, but the main page is too cluttered with stuff on the right.

It looks like 60% of the space vertically is filled with extra stuff (NB Extra, CNS News, Newsbusted, etc...) and the main attraction, the articles are crammed into a single third-column of a newspaper.

I would remove all of the middle column and replace with a horizontal ticker or something unobtrusive.

I'd at either keep the final column so it'll be like the previous design, or do something radically new with it.  Half of it is extra links to my user account, which should be accessible in the header links (next to the date) or videos (like Newsbusted) which take up a lot of horizontal width.

How about if we can individually add/remove the sections to customize the layout?

Regardless, it's money well spent IMO.  Keep up the fine work.

A Few Bugs

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 6:17pm.

Every time I left click or center click and open a new tab in Firefox, whether it's the "read more" link or the article title link, I am brought to the comment box and not the top of the article. Also, the arrow keys don't work for moving the text cursor in plan text mode.

In addition, can you do away with that silly little edit box that appears every time I right click in the comment box using rich text mode?  It's interfering with my FF spell checker. I think most, if not all people, know the keyboard shortcut for copy, cut, and paste, so the popup edit box isn't really necessary.

Have to scroll down to the bottom of the comments to post a new comment. Need to place a comments link at the end of the article. I am lazy so with no new comments Ill just jump into a previous reply or comment to post.

OK

Submitted by Chaitealover on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 6:34pm.

Looks like if I bookmark the "Blogs" page instead of the home page, I'll be able to see if a story has more comments than the last time I looked, but I still had to do a browser search through 3 pages of comments to try to find the 6 new comments that were supposed to be on this blog, but I only found 2 that way [OK, this was probably a bad story to try that on, a lot of use of the word "new," but it's a word that appears in a lot of comments all the time]. Please put an asterisk * or something in front of the word "New" for new comments.

I still don't like not having the tracking page, though. I don't remember every title for every item I may have had an interest in last week.

Are the tag line comments gone for good? Those were usually kind of interesting and generally gave the reader a little insight to the writer's outlook.

Also, (although this is an error that I noticed the last time you updated) clicking on "new" comment link on any blog brings me to the first page and not the first new comment when there are more than one page of comments.

Two comments

Submitted by KC Mulville on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:01pm.

  1. First, I love the feature where you can respond/reflect on op-ed articles written by prominent conservatives. Excellent, excellent feature.
  2. Second, the world is browser-chaos these days. When I'm on Internet Explorer 9, I can't see the comments control. Is it Flash-based? If so, an IE9 browser running 64-bit will likely be a problem, because Flash doesn't work well with that. As a matter of fact, I'm using Google Chrome for NewsBusters now because it shows the comments control without a glitch.

Other than that, the look is pretty cool, but I don't come to NewsBusters for the look. I come for the content. Don't scrimp on the content!

Folks, it's not as if we haven't been through upgrades before

Submitted by Dave. on Mon, 10/11/2010 - 8:25pm.

Remember way, WAY back in the pre-ad days, when NB would cr*sh if a bird flew over your house, or if your MiL called, or worse, actually came by, and the site would stay down for hours on end?

Every time there has been an update since, the problems were usually corrected pretty quickly, and I expect this time will be no different.

Hell, for all we know, unless he is into his eighth brew and passed out on the couch (where I would probably be right now had I spent my weekend dealing with this crap) Matthew is having to write some code from dead scratch just to get some of this stuff to work correctly. He's had to do it before.

Some of us need to show a little patience before we go off half-cocked and rip the new site before the bugs have even been worked out..

At least NB is functional again.

Lots of hard work went into this no doubt, and congratulations to you on a good product.  Although I was comfortable with the old site, I am sure with a little time and acclimation this will be better.  I was surprised that the changes didn't seem to make it more mobile device friendly.  Took a long time to load up on my smart phone and had to scroll way over to the right to pick up all of the first sentance on every article.  Hope that's useful!

I have worked for nasa so I know how much another opinion is wanted. ;)

But I do not like the new layout.  The front page is 8 screens long and at least 60 percent is whitespace.  The light and small font is too light and too small.

Submitted by Model850 on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:33am.

Returning to this thread I saw a "New Comments" count of 88, but when I scrolled through the comments looking for the new one I saw nowhere near 88 "NEW" tags.

Is the comment counter function buggy, or is the function that tags a post as "new" buggy and doesn't carry across page breaks?

Some Widgets Now Functioning Correctly

Submitted by SBVOR on Wed, 10/13/2010 - 4:14pm.

FYI...

The Widget which I linked to in my previous comment (#59) is now operating correctly.

Various other widgets serving Newsbusters still demonstrate the same problem:

http://www.widgetbox.com/search?q=newsbusters

At least one of these other widgets was created by NewsBusters and -- presumably -- could be fixed by NewsBusters:

Others, I assume, would have to be corrected by the various other creators of the widgets.
