We actually got worse stuff AFTER the storm passed! Missed 2 days of work but able to make it up. Then, about a week after we has a major, nasty thunderstorm system roll through that made Isaac look mild, it was rough! Take care buddy, love ya as always. : )

In my likely ignorant opinion, nothing was wrong with the "old NB." I liked it a lot. I don't come onto the site that much and rarely post now, but some have acclimated themselves to this new NB quite well.
To be honest, I find the "expansion" has made it more cumbersome and somehow, more boring with a larger community -- I miss how it was. I miss the people. Some are still here (perhaps many), but it's an effort to locate them. There are a few new posters I really like ("Blonde Thinker" is one), but basically, I feel like you do.
Sorry for the shock to your system. Since I knew this was coming quite some time ago, it was a slow grieving for me...beginning with denial and ending with acceptance. I stop by from time time, but I'm not really into it anymore.

Gawande is inspired by the chain restaurant The Cheesecake Factory. Yep. That'll work in Medicine. Patient's will always have expected outcomes just like what happens when the proper recipe is used to make a cheesecake. What hubris. (Well, he is a Rhodes scholar and a Harvard grad!)
Frankly, Gawande seems like he should be hellbent for shoe leather on Six Sigma, which Newt Gingrich is an advocate. Obama probably thinks Six Sigma is the name of George Soros' Star Chamber.
