MSNBC's Harris-Perry Sees Red Areas Not 'Caring About' Children Being Shot

By Brad Wilmouth | May 14, 2013 | 17:55

A  A

As she appeared as a guest on Monday's All In with Chris Hayes show, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry described the conservative "red" parts of her home state of Lousiana as "not thinking about or caring about the 10-year-old children in my neighborhood who are shot while walking down the street" as she and host Chris Hayes discussed a recent mass shooting at a parade in New Orleans and advocated more gun control.

After Hayes described two distinct perspectives on guns as being the background of people grew up hunting and the point of view of people who have been shot, Harris-Perry added:

Chris Hayes' 'Easy' Solution To Poverty: Give People Money!

By Mark Finkelstein | May 12, 2013 | 14:08

A  A

Chris Hayes is what passes for a progressive intellectual at MSNBC.

Which makes his simple-minded and manifestly mistaken proposal that much more maddening. Making a peek-a-boo video-clip appearance on today's Melissa Harris-Perry's show, which focused on finding solutions to poverty in America, Hayes was seen holding up a hand-written sign with his solution, reading "Giving people money: It's actually that easy."  View the video after the jump.

Liberal Media Bias? Don't Make Bob Herbert Laugh!

By Mark Finkelstein | April 27, 2013 | 12:46

A  A

Bob Herbert: columnist from the Planet Benzar?  Seriously, what the former New York Times op-ed writer had to say this morning is enough to make you wonder whether he occupies the same orb as the rest of us.  Appearing on Melissa Harris-Perry's MSNBC show, Herbert literally laughed out loud at the notion that American media leans liberal.  According to Herbert, the bias in the American media is "overwhelmingly" to the right.

Herbert's snicker came in response to a statement by New York Times reporter Amy Chozick, also an MH-P guest.  Chozick recently wrote an article reporting on the Koch brothers' possible interest in buying the Tribune Company, which among other media outlets owns the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune. According to Chozick, the brothers' interest was in part sparked by their outrage in seeing the liberal bias when they pick up American newspapers. View the video after the jump.

Liberals: ‘We Do Want to Change Marriage’

By Kristine Marsh | April 22, 2013 | 15:21

A  A

Last week, gay marriage advocates on the left began to show their true colors. It started with Slate’s Jillian Keenan advocating for polygamy and The Huffington Post’s Abby Huntsman admitting that “gay marriage opens the door to legalizing polygamy and other things.” MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry went a step further, writing in The Nation on April 15, that the gay marriage debate helps us to realize marriage shouldn’t really matter at all.

“As we race to a victorious finish, it is time to begin forcefully articulating that, in fact, maybe we do want to change marriage – because while marriage should be a choice, it should not be an imperative… I hope we will be like the child who asks what difference it really makes. Because I suspect the goal of achieving this right is less about the ceremonies, the flowers, the love or even the economic benefits. I suspect the real goal is to achieve a more inclusive recognition of the authentic and enduring ways that we connect ourselves to one another, without needing the words ‘husband,’ ‘wife’ or even ‘spouse.’ The difference we want this movement to make is bigger than that.”

More Socialism In Latest Harris-Perry 'Lean Forward': Most Successful Only Entitled To 'A Little More'

By Mark Finkelstein | April 10, 2013 | 09:08

A  A

Maybe MSNBC was trying to deflect some of the controversy surrounding Melissa Harris-Perry's previous "Lean Forward" promo by pushing out a new one. MH-P had provoked outrage in that earlier promo by proclaiming that "kids belong to their communities," not to their parents.

But if anything, the new promo aired during today's Morning Joe just adds fuel to MH-P's socialist fire. While claiming to defend meritocracy, Harris-Perry could only grudgingly admit that the most successful should earn "a little more." She then proceeded to proclaim as a right "health care, education, decent housing and quality food at all times."  From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs, anyone?  View the video after the jump.

In Blog Post, MSNBC's Harris-Perry Defends 'Collective' View of Caring for Children

By Ken Shepherd | April 09, 2013 | 16:35

A  A

MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry this afternoon took to her blog on the network's website to "double down" on her recent "Lean Forward" spot in which she lamented that we as Americans don't have a view of our "collective" responsibility to the nation's children.

From start to finish, the Tulane professor played the victim of right-wing persecution, even closing with a link to Matthew 5:44, where Jesus commands his followers to "love [their] enemies and pray for those who persecute [them]." Here's how Harris-Perry opened her April 9 blog (emphasis mine):

Bozell: MSNBC Stands for 'My Son Needs to Belong to the Collective'

By Brent Bozell | April 08, 2013 | 13:57

A  A

Melissa Harris-Perry declaring in an ad that we must “break through” the “private notion” that “your kid is yours” because “kids belong to whole communities” is an outrage. This isn’t what Mediaite called “a collection of tired progressive cliches on steroids.” This is shredding the notion of family, replacing it with the commands of the state.

MSNBC has awarded itself a new acronym: My Son Needs to Belong to the Collective. How do you sell a private network with this dreadful collectivist advertising?

Sarah Palin on Harris-Perry's 'Kids Belong to Their Communities' Comment: 'Unflipping Believable'

By Noel Sheppard | April 07, 2013 | 20:20

MSNBC's Harris-Perry: America's 'Kids Belong to Their Communities'

By Ken Shepherd | April 04, 2013 | 18:33

A  A

On March 23, my colleague Mark Finkelstein noted how MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry considers the unborn child a "thing" which takes a "lot of money" to "turn into a human," costing thousands of dollars to care for each year of his/her life. Now it appears that Harris-Perry thinks that, after they're born, children fundamentally belong to the state.

Narrating a new MSNBC "Lean Forward" spot, the Tulane professor laments that we in America  "haven't had a very collective notion that these are our children." "[W]e have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to their communities," Harris-Perry argued.

Sharpton: I'd Urge My Daughters Not to 'Get Rid of a Child' Through Abortion

By Jack Coleman | April 03, 2013 | 18:34

Rare is the "pro-choice" liberal who admits that abortion kills an unborn human being.

The Rev. Al Sharpton made this seldom-witnessed acknowledgement -- or as close as he's likely to get -- on his radio show while drawing an analogy to his views on the Defense of Marriage Act.  (audio clip after page break) --

Is Ed Schultz Still Getting Weekend Show on MSNBC?

By Jack Coleman | April 02, 2013 | 12:20

Nearly three weeks after MSNBC announced that Chris Hayes would replace Ed Schultz at 8 p.m. weeknights and that Schultz would host late-afternoon weekend versions of "The Ed Show," the network has still not given a start date for the weekend show.

This has led to speculation on Twitter that Schultz is being eased out at MSNBC, to the point that Schultz addressed the rumors on his radio show yesterday. (audio clips after page break)

On Easter, MSNBC's Harris-Perry Calls Babies 'Things' Again, Invites Atheist Feminist to Slam All Faiths

By Tim Graham | April 01, 2013 | 22:11

A  A

ABC wasn’t the only network to turn to atheist on Easter morning for some acidulous religion-bashing. MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry turned to feminist Katha Pollitt to rip apart religions as “all invented by men for men” to repress women.

That came after Harris-Perry somehow compared the morality of abortion as a less weighty matter than access to water in the Third World. Once again, like last weekend, Harris-Perry referred to unborn babies as “things,” in this case “things in your uterus” that you can evacuate:

Harris-Perry's Fetal Indifference: What It Costs To Have 'This Thing' Turn Into A Human

By Mark Finkelstein | March 23, 2013 | 10:57

UPDATE:  For a brilliant, clear and concise takedown of Harris-Perry's comments, have a listen to the analysis of Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in this podcast.  The discussion comes about 8:25 in and lasts about five minutes.

. Melissa Harris-Perry is clearly a member of the "blob of cells" brigade when it comes to her disregard for unborn human life.  On her MSNBC show this morning, MH-P repeatedly revealed how little respect she has for life in its early forms.

At one point, Harris-Perry callously spoke of how much it costs "to have this thing turn into a human." H/t NB reader Ray R. View the video after the jump.

MSNBC’s ‘Lean Forward’ Ad Unwittingly Alludes to Communist 'Great Leap Forward,' Which Killed Millions of Chinese

By Jeffrey Meyer | March 18, 2013 | 16:00

For the past few years, MSNBC has produced ‘Lean Forward’ ads featuring a network hosts push his or her liberal agenda on the  audience.  Past ‘Lean Forward’ ads have included a push for action on global warming, promoting gay rights, and viciously attacking the Republican Party.

MSNBC’s newest ad features weekend host Melissa Harris-Perry unwittingly -- or at least one hopes-- referencing the Communist Chinese economic program known as the “Great Leap Forward” which left an estimated 18-45 million Chinese dead. The 30-second ad featuring Ms. Perry is narrated as follows:

Rewriting the Bible: The Gospel According to Liberals

By Paul Wilson | March 13, 2013 | 13:45

A  A

When liberals and their media allies have an agenda to push, they’ll use any tool at hand. The left often rails against the presence of religion in civic life, mocking conservative Christians as “Taliban” agitating for theocracy. But other times, they find faith to be a handy weapon to bludgeon conservatives. And they’ll go so far as to reinterpret and rewrite the Bible to justify any liberal cause, no matter how outrageous.

In 2010, MSNBC anchor Melissa Harris-Perry summed up this strategy in her call for “re-imagining the Bible as a tool of progressive social change.” Huffington Post contributor Mike Lux embraced Harris-Perry’s advice, writing that the Bible embodies “all kinds” of “liberal, lefty, progressive values.”

This Happened: MSNBC Panel Sits Around and Tells Race Jokes On the Air

By Matt Hadro | February 18, 2013 | 18:10

A  A

Apparently it's okay for MSNBC panels to sit around and tell race jokes on-air. Host Melissa Harris-Perry had her panel guests tell their "favorite race joke" or "best punch line" on race on her Sunday show and laughter ranged between nervous and uproarious. Harris-Perry capped it all off with a Jewish joke.

After discussing if the best way to give a "social critique" on race was through humor, Harris-Perry told her panel, "Okay, so give me your favorite race joke or your best punch line on it." If a Fox News panel sat around and told race jokes on the set, there would be an uproar and accusations of racism would be directed at the network. [Video below the break. Audio here.]

'We Are Undocumented And Unafraid, Because This Is What We Learned In School'

By Mark Finkelstein | February 02, 2013 | 19:51

The most disturbing thing is that she's probably right . . .

On Melissa Harris-Perry's MSNBC show this morning, Cristina Jiménez, leader of United We Dream, an organization that advocates on behalf of illegal immigrant youth, declared "we are undocumented and unafraid, because this is what we learned in school."  In American schools of today, dominated by government employee unions, she's likely only too accurate about what's being taught.  View the video after the jump.

Melissa Harris-Perry Admits: U.S. Military 'Despised By Many Progressives'

By Mark Finkelstein | January 26, 2013 | 23:05

It's hardly a secret.  After all, in a letter to a senior officer, no less than a young Bill Clinton openly admitted that many of his cohort  "loath[ed] the military." Still, it's stunning to hear a modern-day liberal make a similar admission.

WaPo's Henderson Frets Not Enough Access to Abortion in America

By Brad Wilmouth | January 20, 2013 | 17:58

On Saturday's Melissa Harris-Perry show on MSNBC, during a discussion of the 40th anniversary of the Roe Vs. Wade Supreme Court decision, panel member Nia-Malika Henderson of the Washington Post asserted that it is a "real problem" that many parts of the country do not have abortion clinics.

She went on to fret that younger people are not interested enough in the issue and recommended that "feminist groups and pro-abortion groups have to find a way to engage them and educate them because they're going to be the ones that are on these grassroot levels and at the state levels..."

MSNBC's Perry In a 'Mushy Mess' Over LGBT Wedding

By Matt Vespa | December 18, 2012 | 20:41

A  A

Far-left MSNBC weekend host Melissa Harris-Perry is no fan of marriage. The whole business is simply an act of “conspicuous consumption under the guise of tradition and love," she scoff. But the cynical feminist in her finds herself reduced to a “mushy mess when it comes to two fantastic people finding genuine happiness – and deciding to celebrate.” But that couple in question, naturally, is a same-sex couple, one half of which is, wait for it, transgendered.

Bozell, Hannity Review Worst Media Bias of 2012; MSNBC's Harris-Perry Takes Cake with Slam of Founding Fathers

By NB Staff | December 18, 2012 | 12:21

A  A

"The blame America crowd has come back, but it's become far more militant. It's the hate America crowd," NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell noted on the December 17 edition of Hannity. Bozell was reacting to a now infamous clip from her eponymous July 1 program when MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry trashed the Founding Fathers. "The land on which they formed this Union was stolen. The hands with which they built this nation were enslaved," she noted.

Perry's "footnote for the Fourth of July" was judged by a panel of media bias experts to be the 2012 Quote of the Year. Bozell, the founder and president of the Media Research Center, was in studio with Sean Hannity for a special year-ending "Media Mash" segment devoted to the worst in liberal media bias from this year. Naturally, Harris-Perry's MSNBC colleague Chris Matthews made the cut for his openly admitting that he was glad Hurricane Sandy gave President Obama a much needed boost at the tail-end of the campaign, a remark for which he later apologized on air. MSNBC Anchor Sneers: 'Is the South Ready for a Black Senator?'

By Jeffrey Meyer | December 07, 2012 | 16:35

Following Senator Jim DeMint’s abrupt resignation to run The Heritage Foundation, much has been made over who South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley might name to replace him.  One name mentioned is that of African American Congressman Tim Scott,  a prospect which prompted MSNBC anchor Richard Lui to sneer: "... Is the South ready for a black Senator?"

On Friday’s MSNBC Live, Lui baited fellow MSNBCer Melissa Harris-Perry into trashing the South as intolerant. Surprisingly, she did not fall into this trap.  [See video below page break.  MP3 audio here.]

Here We Go Again: MSNBC's Harris-Perry Uses Virgin Mary to Push Liberal Talking Point on 'Evolving' View of Family

By Ken Shepherd | November 27, 2012 | 18:33

A  A

Ah, the holiday season. It's that time of year when the liberal media loves to use Jesus and the Virgin Mary to push liberal talking points if not outright push the envelope. So while NPR is busy promoting a new novel that presents the Virgin Mary as a skeptic who believes her son Jesus was a fraud, MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry went a safer but equally trite route, using the story of Jesus's nativity to erroneously lecture viewers that Jesus was the son of a single mother and that, as such, we should celebrate all kinds of families, not just the "1950s Leave It to Beaver"- style nuclear ones.
