Bob Turner

Are You the Next Bob Turner?

By Kathryn Jean Lopez | September 18, 2011 | 22:24

A  A

Seventy years old, Bob Turner was retired with 13 grandchildren, sitting comfortably in the Breezy Point section of Queens, N.Y. to enjoy life and be generous to his church and family. But now he's one of 435 legislators trying to get something constructive done in a town that often seems poised for something very different.

He spoke at his congressional campaign's victory party in Howard Beach early in the morning on Sept. 14, armed with a message that was as humble and confident as the messenger delivering it. He has been elected to the seat vacated by the now-infamous Anthony Weiner, a seat that may very well be redistricted out of existence next year. Which is actually just fine with him.

Gregory: 'Republicans Have Been Talking About' Getting the Jewish Vote for Years - 'It Never Happens'

By Noel Sheppard | September 18, 2011 | 18:11

A  A

NBC's David Gregory clearly isn't hearing any alarm bells from what happened in New York's ninth Congressional district Tuesday.

When Republican strategist Alex Castellanos mentioned Sunday that Jews believe President Obama is more pro-Palistiniaan than pro-Israel, the "Meet the Press" host responded, "Republicans have been talking about the Jewish vote going Republican for a long time. It never happens" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Maddow Can't Bear the Horror, the Horror of GOP House Victories in NY, Nevada

By Jack Coleman | September 15, 2011 | 20:53

A  A

The strangest thing happened last night on MSNBC -- its self-proclaimed civics geek Rachel Maddow ignored the results not one but two special elections the day before to fill vacancies in the House.

I know, I know, hard to believe. I mean, every time Maddow does report on elections results -- such as when Democrats win -- she'll segue into her reporting by mock drumming to NBC's bombastic election night music in the background. The woman eats and breathes elections. Can there be much doubt that Maddow camped outside her polling place the night before she first cast a vote to avoid lines in the morning? (video after page break)

MSNBC's Bashir Challenges Pat Buchanan, Loses Badly

By Noel Sheppard | September 15, 2011 | 17:42

A  A

Someone at MSNBC should tell Martin Bashir that he might not agree with Pat Buchanan's politics, but he's not one to challenge about a matter of fact.

On the show bearing his name Thursday, Bashir mistakenly tried to refute the conservative's claim that former Mayor Ed Koch accused President Obama of throwing Israel under the bus (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Comedy Gold: In NY-09, AP's Fouhy Casts Weprin as Presumptive Front-Runner, Calls Race for Turner 26 Minutes Later

By Tom Blumer | September 14, 2011 | 14:28

A  A

Last night at 11:31 p.m., as shown here at the Columbus Dispatch, the Associated Press's Beth Fouhy was treating the special congressional electoral contest in NY-09 as if Democrat David Weprin would likely fend off the challenge from Republican Bob Turner.

The 11:31 p.m. time stamp appears to be accurate, since only about a half-hour earlier, at 10:56 p.m., Fouhy put up a brief item at an AP-hosted site about how the ballot counting was proceeding slowly. Twenty-six minutes later, at 11:57 p.m., as seen in this tweet, foolish Fouhy called the race for Turner.

NBC Offers Scant Coverage of Big Dem Loss in NY Special Election

By Scott Whitlock | September 14, 2011 | 12:32

A  A

The Today show, which is a four hour program, on Wednesday devoted a scant 43 seconds of air time to a surprising loss by Democrats in a New York special congressional election. Both CBS and ABC offered more expansive coverage.

ABC's Good Morning America saw the election of Republican Bob Turner as a "stunning upset." Referencing another GOP win in Nevada, host George Stephanopoulos surprisingly speculated, "Landslide victories for Republicans in two key races. Could these early wins spell big trouble for President Obama?"

Open Thread: Can Democrats Keep Weiner's Seat?

By NB Staff | September 09, 2011 | 09:34

A  A

While former Rep. Anthony Weiner's district is not always a Democratic stronghold, it does tend to vote more liberally. David Weprin, the Democratic New York State assemblyman running in the special election for Weiner's former seat is not the greatest candidate, either. A few weeks ago, he told a newspaper that he thought the national debt was around only $4 trillion. With a weak Democratic candidate, some are wondering if Republican Bob Turner can take the seat, and if he does, hold it in the November election as well.

So far, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has already spent nearly $500,000 in TV ad spots in the district, which began airing yesterday and will continue through Monday. The Democratic House Majority PAC has also bought additional advertising time to support Weprin. If Turner still pulls a win, do you think he could also hold the seat in November if a stronger candidate ran against him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
