AP Links Assault on Reporter to Appearance in Bush Movie... BDS Strikes Again

  • Bookmark and Share

An Arkansas TV reporter that had a bit part in Oliver Stone's movie "W" was found beaten unconscious in her Little Rock home on October 20 and in its report on the crime the Associated Press seemed to decide that she was beaten merely because she had appeared in the movie though this impression the AP seems to have is not supported by the police. One wonders why the AP decided to spend almost half its story focusing on her movie role when reporting this crime? Is the AP trying to say her connection with George W. Bush got her attacked? It sure seems like the AP is seized by another bout of Bush Derangement Syndrome with its unnecessary emphasis on this reporter's film role.

The APs obsession with the victim's movie role was odd, indeed. Even in its first few lines the AP ties KATV anchor Ann Pressly to her movie work saying in its first sentence that she "had a small part in the Bush biopic 'W.'" The AP takes pains to point out that in the movie, Pressly "speaks favorably of President Bush's 'Mission Accomplished' event on an aircraft carrier shortly after the start of the Iraq war." The report speaks about how she won the role in the film and then adds this odd sentence:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Spokeswoman Kate Hubin for the film company Lionsgate confirmed Pressly's role but declined to comment further.

Why did we need to have Pressly's role "confirmed"? Why would the AP imagine that Lionsgate films had anything useful to add to a report on this crime?

In fact, despite all the attention the AP directed to the victim's movie role, there doesn't seem to be any immediate reason to suspect that her role in "W" had anything at all to do with the attack. The AP quotes a Little Rock police spokesman on a possible motive for the crime; robbery.

Davis said investigators are talking to Pressly's co-workers to determine whether she "has had any problems." Davis said Pressly's purse was gone and that robbery was among the possible motives being explored. Davis would not discuss specifics of what the investigation revealed.

So, why did the AP spend so much time on the movie role? Is it possible that the AP just wanted to find a way to make it all seem like Bush's fault?

Now, let's contrast the AP's treatment of the crime with the way the Arkansas Times reported the story. In its 12 paragraph story, the Ark. Times mentions Pressly's movie role precisely once and briefly at that.

Pressly has a small role in the current movie, "W," Oliver Stone's portrayal of George W. Bush. She played commentator Ann Coulter in the movie, much of it filmed in Shreveport.

That was it. The Ark. Times didn't see the movie role as that much of a factor at all and unless more details emerge, nor should anyone else.

Yet the AP went mad over her role in "W." What could have been the APs motivation?

Anyway, here's hoping that Miss Pressly gets well soon and can help the police to find her attacker whatever his motive.

**UPDATE**

Sadly, Miss Presly has died of her injuries. Condolences to her family and friends and may they catch her killer.

Huh?

How did AP get mad over her role in "W"? They merely pointed out she was in the film.

If someone is violently attacked like that, wouldn't it be wise for the police to talk to co-workeers to see if there were any problems she was having? I'm sure if someone who wasn't in "W" was attacked in a  similar way, their co-workers would be asked questions too.

"Went mad." I said "went

"Went mad." I said "went mad." That is not the same as "get mad." Isn't the English language wonderful?

Probably

Some local Democrat being investigating and had to try and shut her up.

Anchor attacked

I'm not sure which version of the Associated Press story you're writing about.  The version I read did state the anchor may have been "targeted," but it included a quote from law enforcement stating the woman may have been targeted because she is a television anchor.

The A.P. story never attempted to make a connection between the attack and her appearance in the "W." film.

Then you tell me. Why was

Then you tell me. Why was half the APs story about her movie role when there is no proof at all that it had any bearing on the story? Obviously, the AP found her movie role as a major part of the story despite that it doesn't appear to BE a large part of the story.

Well, Warner, Lionsgate

Well, Warner, Lionsgate confirmed her role but declined to comment further.

The sure sign of a conspiracy!

Wouldn't you love to know what else they asked that Lionsgate refused to comment on?

So, if Lionsgate had made a

So, if Lionsgate had made a film about D.B. Cooper, someone from the AP would give 'em a ring and ask if they really knew who he was and what he did with all that money.... right?

Ha, ha.

Yeah... not so sure about this one either

I'm with some of the other skeptics... I don't see any implication that her role in "W" was the motive... I read that as "sure she's local news, but you may recognize her from the recent film... yadda yadda yadda".  Its just a way to make the story appealing on a more national level.  Now if she had starred in a movie 6 years ago about Bush, then maybe-but W is still in theaters and still making news.

Her role in the move is

Her role in the move is mentioned in three of the paragraphs, that's not   half of the story.

Hey AP, how about these

Hey AP, how about these possible connections...

James McDougal to testify against Clinton - James McDougal, DEAD.

Ron Brown to testify against Clinton - Ron Brown, DEAD.

Vince Foster knows ALL about Whitewater - Vince Foster, DEAD.

Chandra Levy, girlfriend of Democrat Congressman Gary Condit - Chandra Levy, DEAD.

Mary Jo K, girlfriend of Democrat Senator Ted Kenedy - Mary Jo K, DEAD.

Obvious links you ignore, when there is a (D) involved.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Wouldn't this suggest she was targetted cause she was Pro-Bush?

I am thoroughly confused here.  The AP is implying that she was targetted cause of her appearance in the anti-Bush movie 'W'?  But her brief scene in the movie was seemingly Pro-Bush, reporting on the Mission Accomplished speech aboard the Carrier.  And she even played Ann Coulter for gosh sakes.

Wouldn't it be more likely that Leftists targetted her because of her Pro-Bush views?

Why isn't Newsbusters looking at this story from this perspective?

I didn't suggest it was

I didn't suggest it was because the reporter was pro Bush or anti Bush. I was suggesting that the AP was injecting Bush into the story where it didn't belong. The Ark Times did it right. One line with a short mention she was in the movie was all the fact warranted.

All they did was say she

All they did was say she briefly appeared in a move about Bush. Nothing negative was said about him.

FoxNews.com even has the AP story up, so it can't be too bad that Bush was "injected" into the story.

Why is this even a national story?

I don't mean to sound crass but…

Although this is a horrible story, it doesn’t rise to the level of being a national story. I mean, my God, the Today Show spent at least five minutes on this story this morning.

The only reason I can see this getting national attention is because the media think they can discredit Bush – therefore McCain – by tying this to the movie and implying an "evil republican" attacked her for daring to be in the movie.

Anchor is national news

I live in the TV market where the abduction of Jodi Huisentruit occurred in the mid 90's.  Mason City, Iowa, is a town of around 27,000 people, and KIMT-TV is considered a bottom rung on the ladder of success, but Jodi was national news for weeks and occasionally is the subject on newsmagazine stories and websites 13 years later.  So I'd expect a story like this to be national news.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

You know, I am a big

You know, I am a big believer in the concept of "projecting". That explains the liberal mentality so often. They expect everyone to cheat, lie, distort, etc - because THEY do it.

Unfortunately, this works in reverse too. Conservatives expect our opponents to fight fair, because thats what WE generally do.

So, if some radical leftie imagines a pissed-off right-winger harming an innocent girl because of her role in a movie, what does that say about them?  A lot more than it says about the target of their fantasy.

Take Away the Politics...

If you remove politics from the situation, the bottom line is that a woman was attacked in her home.  Let's hope she recovers and that the perpetrator is caught.

Absolutely

Which is why I said that at the end of the piece.

Don't count on it

Crimes go unsolved every day in Arkansas, I know as I've lived here most of my life. We have one of the worst crime labs in the world with a supposed backlog of over 6 mos.

If the perp is caught it will probably be because brags to someone and that person tells the police.

Lol Warner

Slow morning? She was recently in a movie and the reporter was trying to find out if she had any personal problems on the set.

No conspirisy theory here Warner, but I heard that man has never been on the moon yet.

Real life video games are cool

That's gotta be a lie. After

That's gotta be a lie. After all, you're WAY out there in outer space. You'd have noticed if no one ever showed up.

Warner

You at Newsbusters are not

You at Newsbusters are not going to like me but she was attacked for the reasons alleged by AP, where can I send a donation to the cause?

The media has breached the trust of the american public.  They deserve more than this.  Let us hope it was not an isolated instance.

Anne Coulter connection?

I would tend to focus more on her playing anne coulter in a film as there has been a fair amount of violence spewed at her on internet inciting hatred and violence.

I think, though WTH is correct that the AP is putting to much into it but not enough. If I was writing it, I would have mentioned the  Coulter connection and then bring up the randomness of Rather and "What's the Frequency Kenneth"...

Another all time low from the AP

Note to the Ass(h***)ciated Press:

This woman is clinging to life and interjecting her minor role in the washout file "W" as the cause of her beating is an all time, ALL TIME LOW in the history of yellow Journalism.  Yes I'm calling you out Ass Press:  You people who work for that organization are a bunch of cold, soulless, guiltless lowlives who know no limits in attacking ordinary people, even those that are fighting for their lives.

Anchor attacked

In response to Mr. Huston's response to my comment, we can only presume why the Associated Press article included information about the woman's role in "W."

My preumption is that many more people might know her from her appearance in a film being shown on 2,030 screens nationwide ("Her?  I saw her in that movie about Bush!") than know her from her work in the Little Rock-Pine Bluff, Arkansas market (DMA #57).  Thus, her role in the film is certainly worth mentioning.

You utterly miss the point.

You utterly miss the point. I never said her film role wasn't "worth mentioning." I said the AP made it the focus of its report and that was unnecessary and illogical.

Anchor attacked

You seem to be pulling back on your original charge and want to re-characterize your posting as a criticism of the Associated Press making the film a "focus" of its report.

Originally you wrote that the Associated Press "seemed to decide" the attack was related to the woman's appearance in a film.  The word "links" was also used in the headline above your posting.  Do you retract those writings now?

I suppose I am having a hard time understanding your "point", but you change it so doggone much!

»→ Yes, Anchor attacked

And now your post is anchored such that you can no longer bump it to the top.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Sam, Wrong again. I am not

Sam,

Wrong again.

I am not pulling back on anything.

I am saying that the AP injected the Bush movie into the story at a heightened emphasis. That they "seemed to decide" that the Bush movie was the reason for the attack because it became the MAIN point of the APs story.

Then, to give an example of a report that had the RIGHT balance, I gave the example of the Ark. Times coverage which mentioned the movie ONE TIME and in ONE SENTENCE.

The AP, however, mentioned the movie role over and over again, emphasizing it as if it was a key point to the story.

You may have trouble following the logic, but I put it forward the same way initially as I am putting it now. I am not "pulling back" on anything at all.

The FACT is, the AP focused on the movie when it had little reason to do so. Its bad reporting. Further it happened because the AP wanted to make Bush the focus of the story because of its BDS.

It's the old guilt by

It's the old guilt by association trick. It's Bush's fault she got beat up.
