House Speaker Pelosi Claims Al Gore Invented Internet Technology?

  • Bookmark and Share

I'm sure by now we are all aware of the Netroots Nation conference that happened in Austin, Texas last weekend. Well, did you know that without Al Gore it wouldn't have happened? That's right, since Al Gore invented the Internet... I know, I know, that is the old Al Gore joke where he famously claimed that he invented the World Wide Web. Everyone knows that Al Gore had little to do with the Internet, of course. But at least one person, obviously one rather easy to bamboozle, still thinks Al Gore did invent the Internet and one paper is happy to help her tell the world about it. In fact she thinks he invented all the technology inherent in that Internet. And she is currently the Speaker of the House of Representatives, sadly enough.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi attended the Nutrooters gathering and, as reported in the Houston Chronicle, let loose with this gem while introducing Al Gore to those assembled: "Without him, there would be no Netroots Nation. There wouldn't be the technology."

Huh? Without Al Gore "there wouldn't be the technology" to have an Internet based gathering like Netroots Nation?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

She has to be kidding, right?

Nancy, um, I'd like to help you out, babe. See, Al Gore didn't invent the Internet and he is NOT responsible for any of the technology that is connected with it. Not a single line of code did he write, not one piece of hardware was created by the former VP and current global warming snake oil salesman.

Now, of course we jest about Al Gore claiming to have invented the internet. After all, Gore never really said he invented the Internet. What he said, instead, was that it wouldn't have existed if it weren't for his deft hand at legislation.

His exact quote to Wolf Blitzer was:

During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

Self serving, half truth that it is, he wasn't really saying he invented the Internet. But he was saying it exists because of his loving legislative care, and even with that he is still not exactly telling the truth. The Internet existed before Al Gore's legislative efforts, we all know.

But don't let the cat out of the bag for Speaker Pelosi. It might ruin her hero worship of the great pretender, Al Gore. And let's not forget the Houston Chronicle helping her disseminate such silly propaganda.

Seeing Paloosi's picture

Seeing Paloosi's picture makes me wish Al had not invented the internet.  She proves you don't have to be good looking or intelligent or knowledgeable or even competent to be a congress critter.  You just have to know the right people and pander to them.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Screw----

Actually Nam proves you can screw yourself into enough money to 'buy' a position you are totally unqualified to hold.

Pardon Me-----

Pardon me while I go stick my head in the comode and flush a few dozen times. Back, it's not my brain that is full of garbage, someone catch SF Nan and do the flush on her. I doubt there will be any resistance as the water flows in one ear and out the other.

Does this woman realize how stupid she sounds or is that her normal mental condition? She's an embarassment to all women who throughout history have worked to get rid of the term 'rattle' brained female. Maybe she is living proof that Botox goes to the brain and shrinks it.

At 68, the Head Bat is, like McCain as we've been hearing ad infinitum, apparently tottering on the edge of senility.

Except she doesn't have any 'good days' - they're all bad. Nothing sadder than a senile liberal.

Pelosi is definitely . . .

What's the difference between Nancy Pelosi and the Panama Canal? The Canal is a Busy Ditch!

A shining example of lefty leap logic; Man-bear-pig is a real man. Here's another; abortion is a choice, 6 billion people are bad for earth, yet, one dead "soldier" is an atrocity.

BTW, did someone with Parkinson's do her makeup? Look at that eyebrow ... just damn!

I always thought

the canal wasnt as wide as Pelosi's mouth but deffinatly longer then her knowledge of just about anything

Actually Nancy, there

Actually Nancy, there wouldn't be the technology for it without the military that you're constantly trying to defeat.

Typical...

It really is. Pick any given moderately advanced technology, and you're likely to find at least part of its development in the military. Whether the nuts like it or not, a hefty portion of our best and brightest, innovators, and inventors are in, contracted by, or sponsered by the military. Of course, given my status, I might be somewhat biased in that opinion.

If I'm not mistaken, Al was

If I'm not mistaken, Al was talking about initiatives to make the ARPAnet into the Internet and then the WWW, and Pelosi is merely saying that Al was integral in those initiatives which eventually led to the creation of NetRoots.

It's sorta like saying CSI: Miami wouldn't be around were it not for Philo Farnsworth.

Nice try, Bal...

If I'm not mistaken ... Pelosi is merely saying that Al was integral in those initiatives which eventually led to the creation of NetRoots.

Nope.  You're mistaken: "Without him, there would be no Netroots Nation. There wouldn't be the technology." She clearly said the technology wouldn't exist.  Show me one piece of legislation fathered by Gore that directly led to the creation of technology essential to the internet.

Senators are legislators.  They may make speeches and write articles and otherwise use the influence of their position to encourage people to act in a certain way; however, the only way they can cause something to happen is by act of legislation. Without a bill with his name on it that directly led to something essential to the workings of the 'net, he has no claim.  If he has no claim, then Pelosi is buying into the mythology.

Farnsworth's a bad analogy

It's more like saying the EPA wouldn't be around if not for Tricky Dick, or various aspects of "New Deal" socialism wouldn't be around but for FDR. Inventors actually do something which usually helps other people.

This was all about politics. Al was a Democrat voting to spend even more tax money on yet another domestic spending program, Bal. If anything, that would be the direct opposite of productive business & invention.

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

At best, Al noticed something going on with some kind of computer technology and said.  "That looks interesting"

His dad was evidently somehow involved with the implementation of the Interstate Highway system, and Al thought "Information Superhighway" sounded like a good claim to fame.

what I said at the time, which infuriated everyone

Is that giving a Democrat so much credit for mindlessly voting "yes" on a domestic spending program which had surprisingly good results in hindsight would be just like giving a Republican a bunch of credit for mindlessly voting "yes" on a military spending program which had surprisingly good results in hindsight. Going down this road, for either party and in either case, invites taking responsibility for failures following other votes. Various partisans generally find a reason to get upset by my analogy (usually in direct proportion to some often-mindless partisanship, IMO) but I still think my words apply quite well a decade or so later...

I thought I was agreeing with your analogy over the Farnsworth dea.

OK,this really dates me, but I remember using VisiCalc in the early 80's and wishing it had certain other functions.  My wishing had nothing to do with the development of Lotus 123.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE

Oh, you were agreeing (I think!)

I think the media tries to give politicians too much credit when the government does something right. And I recall using the same program(s). It's hard to imagine a past without a longtime telephone company monopoly, but I can, and in that past of my dreams something like the internet from the early '90s develops in the 1950s, instead of something very commercial suddenly springing forth from a commercially barren DARPANET. Needless to say, this alternative history would have changed the world in various ways.

Because it never happened, people don't imagine it could have happened under a free marketplace instead of an AT&T monopoly, but plenty of examples exist of governments slowing down technology.

From Henry Clay to Nancy Pelosi

We are witnessing history. We are witness to the worst Speaker of the House of Representatives in history. It makes me wonder if there is any gray matter in her head.

Maybe

her commments will take out the remaining 9 percent that have any confidence in Congress at all.

Invent - Create. Gore is a creationist after all.

On the first day, Al created the heavens

On the second day, Al created the earth

On the thrid day, Al created the moon

On the fourth day, Al created the waters

On the fifth day, Al created global warming

On the sixth day, Al created the internet and warned everyone of the global warming

On the seventh day, Big Al rested, while trading carbon credits, and the melting ice raised the seas and it filled his swimming pool being heated by his spanking brand new solar panel made in China.

I enjoyed that.

"The Internet existed

"The Internet existed before Al Gore's legislative efforts, we all know."

Sure it did, it goes back to the late 60's early 70's, but you had to
write your own code in Cobol - limiting its use to maybe 5,000 Computer
Science majors.

Initiative and invent have two totally different meanings.

"I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives

environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

Why not say Al Gore said he invented education?

So you are saying Gore invented HTML?

Why do you think they are called AlGOR-ithms?

Sorry, I was cleaning my brain and it went off!

Reagan "created" the Internet

Biff, If ANYONE deserves credit for "creating" the Internet, it is Reagan and not Gore.

President Reagan took the initiative in "creating' the Internet, not Al. Reagan included programs to implement the newly created (and constantly evolving) networking technology in his "Star War's" programs. He authorized the expenditure of BILLIONS of dollars in defense and civilian research monies to advance the technologies and to standardize the protocols that combined to create the Internet we know and enjoy today. He created technology policies and offered research monies to standardize Internet protocols and technologies and to intergrate them into government and military infrastructures like the National Crime Information Center and DARPA.

This was all a part of his modernization of the military and government technology and was a direct extension of his policies to integrate civilian research into military projects, and it was a part of his commitment to technology advancement in America. That was a policy that Al was against, as I remember it, as Al thought it was too expensive (Star Wars technology like the internet was considered a “boondoggle,” remember?) and was doomed to failure. Al was wrong about that, of course. But now he‘s trying to take credit for Reagan’s insightfulness and commitment to modern technology.

 The more I hear Pelosi

The more I hear Pelosi squawk, the more I see/hear the actions of her constituents in San Francisco, the more I am convinced that every single federal dollar should be cut off from her district. Why in the hell should the rest of the United States funnel their hard earned federal tax dollars to such a cesspool of humanity? So that we can have this absolute criminal as speaker of our house of representatives?

It is getting to the point where I believe half the folks in this country are on some kind of drugs full time. I don't know any other answer.

Pelosi looks like a James Bond villainess in that photo!

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

Pelosi is confused about Gore's confusion.

Pelosi is confused about Gore's confusion. Mr. Gore was involved with technology, but it was the passing of technology along to China. Mr. Gore's contribution to the internet pales in comparison to his involvement with the Buddhist Temple, Maria Hsia, Charlie Trie, John Huang, and Wen Ho Lee. Of course, there was "no controlling legal authority."

Mr. Gore should be recognized for technical contributions by the Chinese government for his aid in their development of missile and satellite technology, and nuclear weapons development.

What short memories we have! Such a patriot.

I believe that Al Gore invented the internet

just as I believe that he invented global warming.  He's a great inventor....of the truth.

How about some more Botax Nancy

Her and Harriet Reid this going to bankrupt this country. I have left a couple of messages for her and my congressperson. (Barnyard Frank) to let the congress do and up and down vote on off-shore drilling. Frank got back to me and basiclly said that he dosen't believe that is the solution. I let him know that he should be voting on not what he believes but what his constistuents believe. I am a firm believer for term limits for the Congress and the Senate. These career politicians think they can force their beliefs on us. They only way to get the channge that "The One" often talks about is to rid Washington of all the multi term hacks.

Thank you

a sample:

Gore intended to give full administrative control to the RBOCs (baby
bells) of peering points, charging admission to any commercial service
provider to connect, while also being able to sell retail Internet
service without the same penalty. This NAP model was also proposed to
use a measured rate service, a concept the RBOCs were familiar with
from toll networks (long distance). Had they succeeded, the Bells would
have likely been the sole providers of Internet, and your usage would
have been billed per minute like long distance.

and additional comment, both GREAT loads of information

sample from 2nd. post:

I helped bury CommunityLink in its Omaha pilot market, and spent
countless hours enlisting our Senators to tell Al Gore to back off on
his monopoly aspirations. It's amusing that he's back again, foisting
yet another completely worthless concept upon us in a means of
transferring trillions of wealth to those he does bidding for.

I'm sure this is what nancy is wishing for, tax the internet fairly!
