Cartoonist Rall Sees 'Bad Times' for Country as 'Great Times' for Him

Riddle me this: when is a cartoonist as shallow and one dimensional as his own creations? When his name is Ted Rall. The San Antonio Express-News ran a short story covering a convention being held in Texas that is serving as a gathering place for some of the nation's increasingly fewer political cartoonists. Rall has been chosen as the president of this seemingly ever more irrelevant organization and apparently the Express-News found his glee at this nation's ills to be interesting copy.

Naturally, the Express-News gave us the Rallian set up for today's "ills":

An unpopular war, a shaky economy, the prospect of a border fence, a delicate climate seemingly seeking revenge this summer, soaring food and fuel prices, and a potentially polarizing presidential election -- it all adds up to a gloomy forecast for most Americans.

All these claims are, of course, liberal shibboleths and lack any context. Merely the mouthing of these topics is enough for the media to say "see, it's all going to hell."

But, then we get to Rall's outrageous comments.

“These are more interesting times than I've ever seen. Chronicling the possible end of a great empire is far more interesting than peace and prosperity,” said Rall, whose syndicated cartoons raise eyebrows across the country. “The country is bankrupt, we're losing two wars and there's no end in sight, the Constitution is nearly gutted and we're one vote away on the Supreme Court from fascism.

"Facist" courts, eh?

I wonder what rulings he'd like to see that would reverse that supposed "fascism," don't you? After all, what most extreme leftists think equals "fascism" rarely actually resembles it.

Maybe Rall would like to see free infanticide, yet forced "national health care" that would see the elderly refused service (just like it does in other nations that have national health care) because they are too old?

Maybe he'd love to see terrorists getting treated like common criminals so that they can roam freely in our society planing their next terror attack while they await their "day in court"?

Maybe the end of free choice in education by the banning of homeschooling would be a salve to Ted Rall?

Maybe the end of our right to self-protection is his druthers?

What ever his definition of a country free of "fascism," he seems to like it the way it is, anyway. Like most vultures, bad times are good for him.

“These are great times for me, not the country.”

Actually, anything good for this country Rall would find to be "bad times" if his past works can be used as a yard stick by which to measure his discontent.

We are very familiar with what Ted Rall thinks is "good." Rall has depicted Condi Rice in racist terms and made of her a slut sleeping around with powerful international figures, he has called all our troops "idiots," he has depicted our soldiers as suicide bombers. In fact Rall has viciously attacked our military over and over again showing his hatred for them in uncounted ways.

Naturally, even as each hate filled cartoon is foisted on the public reveals otherwise, Rall doesn't consider himself to be "cynical."

“To be a political cartoonist, deep down in your heart, you have to think it's possible for people to change.”

Ah, the vaunted "change." But to what? That is the true question and from his past works one cannot help but imagine that Rall wants us to change, alright. Into Europe.

Personally, I'm rooting for conditions in the country to continue to irk Ted Rall. After all, if he is against it, it is probably a good thing.

Rall is

An oxygen waster.

Disseminating his work is a complete and utter waste of technology.

Rall has been a certifiable

Rall has been a certifiable waste of skin and brain matter for some time now, a guy who outdoes Olbermann or Michael Moore on the repulsion scale. This is one of the brave cartoonists of liberal democracy who wouldn't dare parody Islam or Mohammed in one of his wretched 'toons because he'd never actually provoke a target who might react in some substantive way. He's representative of that degenerate generation promoting dissent without risk, who speaks truth to any power as long as that power won't lift a finger in response.

This obnoxious clown used

This obnoxious clown used to be a fill-in radio host in LA.  He has a face made for radio, a voice made for silent films and cartoons made for the birdcage.  Ted Rall is a pathetic excuse for a human being totally starved for attention...the only time his work gets more than a cursory yawn is when he trots out a vile, racist, anti-American strip or makes a disgusting comment relating to his joy over Ronald Reagan's death.

Maybe the San Antonio Express

is the next newspaper to go the way of the buffalo.  They can't figure out that conservatives read and study the issues.  Liberals don't read...they wait for one of their masters to tell them what to think.  And yet, they keep targeting liberals.  Didn't anybody go to school in that business?

"the Constitution is nearly gutted "

Yeah, except for that pesky Freedom of the Press thing somewhere in there...

From the article

Rall concedes
that editorial cartoonists tend to be a homogeneous lot — white, male,
middle class and middle-aged, like himself — but says that's changing.

“We're seeing signs of increased diversity, especially among the alternative cartoonists,” he said.

Yeah, and the Express News fired the minority editorial cartoonist, one Leo Garza, who happened to be conservative. That is why I canceled my subscription, as that was the last straw. If not for WTH's thread on this, I would never have known about this stupid convention or rall's comments, and I live here.

I don't like Rall and wish

I don't like Rall and wish that he wasn't widely regarded as a barometer for general liberal sentiment...but the link you posted is quite funny. I'm not in favor of a law that says people can't have SUVs if they truly want them, but I do think such people have earned a bit of mockery.

Apparently, Rall has two varieties of cartoon; ones like this which safely tap into something that 99% of Americans agree with a la Bill O'Reilly's "the folks are getting ripped off" faux populism and his off-the-deep-end hard-left BS that does the kind of damage to liberals that Ann Coulter and Michael Savage do for conservatives.

Il y a la merde quel remort produit quand il a mange trop stupidite.

why is it SUV owners

are always caricatured as white, usually soccer moms, always middle class. people who actually have a child or two to haul around.

But the gangsta, hood culture with giant "dub" spinning rims, who only haul around their multimedia stereo rigs, are *never* caricatured. In my neighborhood, ALL BUT TWO SUV's are owned by single "players" and of the ones not owned by oft-arrested dealers, they run Toyota and Ford V-6's while the gangsters drive giant Cadillac Escalades with huge V8's.

Not once have I seen a "held down by the Man" brotha driving his $60K and up penile extension being held up to ridicule by the enviro nuts, the gas gougers or the Media.

not only that but all the......"undocumented immigrants" that go to my childeren's schools that all have free lunch, can't aford a back pack so we have to "donate" to them, and then thier parents drive up in Navigators, Suburbans, Escalades, ectect...

NEVER have i seen them being ridiculded as an evil SUV owner, only whites.

He's still around?

I haven't heard this guy's name mentioned in quite a while.  He used to be a favorite of mine when he would post his "wish list" on his website ("buy me a computer" "buy me this shirt" "buy me this Star Trek collection" - and I'm serious that was there).  When Ann Coulter was on book # 2 or #3 making the cover of TIME he practically begged her to feud with him so he would get attention - wanted a Hannity/Colmes deal with her for cable (of course no one would talk to him without her).  Glad to see he's marvelously irrelevant today as then.

Rall

Complete self serving wuss....I would like to get this guy in a room for 5 minutes, it will take 1.  He is so washed up, can someone buy him a QVC jewelry debit card so he can acessorize? (SP) Call your mommy Ted she needs you to take out the trash.

One Ted Rall I liked

There was one of his cartoons I liked. It had two guys (headshots) arguing some worldview subject involving Sartre, Camus, and Chomsky. Unseen, a person keeps trying to interrupt. Finally one of the guys says, "For Christsake what do you want?". Then the next frame is the full view (of a fastfood joint). And the now seen third person says, "Gimme a cheeseburger anna Pepsi". To which one of the first two replies, "You want fries with that."

At the time, I was working fastfood in a college town. It struck me as funny because I did work with extremely intelligent people doing so-called menial labor. There were often surreal situations like that. At the same time, I got the joke about people becoming highly educated only to end up working service jobs [which is what Rall was getting at I'm sure].

Anyway, I had that cartoon on my refrigerator for several years.

Good thing the current

Good thing the current media and cultural elites like Rall was not around during the War of 1812 (when even the White House was attacked) or the Civil War or the Depression. We would have been so paralyzed with despair and fear we'd never have got out of them alive, and Rall would have had plenty of misery to enjoy. Hell, we might have not even emerged from the Revoluntary War. ("More setbacks to General Washington today as troops starve in Valley Forge as the unending war for American "Indepedence" rages on...)

Did anyone see the BMI's report on how reporters and the media were MORE upbeat during the Depression than they are about today about the current much milder economic problems? Funny stuff.

P.S. Does anyone find the whole "popular" and "unpopular" descriptors for war very infantile? War is not something you describe in pop culture terms, you describe it in practical necessary terms. It's like describing root canal as an "unpopular" medical procedure. Maybe so, but most folks know that "unpopular" procedures are necessary. What the hell is a "popular" war anyway? The Star Wars movies? Even WWII had dissenters, traitors and whiners.

Good comments zf

That's logical. If we have unpopular wars, then we should have popular ones, right?

Quiz time! Everybody name off all the popular wars:

......(drip, drip).......(cough)......

Anybody?......Bueller?.....

Kenny the idea of a popular

Kenny the idea of a popular war depends on which sisde you are on and the time frame in which you view it.  I would say that most think the war to free the USA from Britian was popular or a good idea.  Then WWII was pretty popular at times for some.  Around 1944 it was really popular in France.  So ask a stupid question again.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Kenny, popular is a

Kenny, popular is a relative question. For me, Vietnam was a popular war. That why I stayed on over there. The South Vietnamese I worked with and lived with were very much in favor of the war. They had no wish to live under communist control, and were very much in favor of killing all of the NVA we could find.

Iraq and Afghanastan? I would say both theaters are popular. At least in my circle and my region of this great country. If I was young enough I would have gone to this one to. I barely made Gulf War I. I joined the NG here and went to that one. I was to old for this one. Even counting my prior service.

WWII was popular here, after the Jap sneak attack. WWI? It enjoyed some popularity, also. Korea was a war that needed to be fought, and the people here understood that.

Now, if you insist on asking moronic questions.....

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Cat got your tongue Kenny?

Sorry haven't checked this

Sorry haven't checked this post for a while.

When I say popular I mean:

pop·u·lar (ppy-lr)

adj.

1. Widely liked or appreciated: a popular resort.

I think most wars are viewed as NECESSARY or UNNECESSARY. But I think the media knows that nuance would bring more supporters into the fold.

Ted Rall

The easiest path to relevance for a liberal is to be critical. For youngsters raised in the tradition of SNL and leftist populism their stinging commentary gives them a sense of superiority and advanced intellect.

They have a range of words, behaviors and attitudes which are self congratulatory and they wallow in sarcasm. cynicism and disrespect. To them this an attainment of a sort, an accomplishment. Of course they never experience truth, scarifice or devotion. Ridicule is their weapon and disbelief is their motivation.

Ted Rall and millions of others like him are so oblivious to the god given spirit with in themselves that they are objects of pity . I hope someday they will have the courage to understand how pathetically lost and useless their lives have been.
