Did Chicago Sun-Times Endanger a U.S. Soldier's Life Just for a 'Scoop'?

Long-time gossip columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, Michael Sneed, was one of the first to announce that the son of Chicago's Mayor Daley volunteered as a private in the U.S. Army in 2004 after successfully attaining his MBA from the University of Chicago. That was interesting reporting, that such a big city mayor's son would join the Army like a regular guy, of course, but has Sneed now taken her "exclusives" a step too far? On Dec. 11th, Sneed reported that Patrick Daley is being deployed overseas. Has this somewhat specific news endangered his life and/or that of his fellow soldiers now that the enemy has been told that the son of a famous politician is on his way to a specific theater of action as well as being told a targeted window of departure?

Sneed reported the following:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A soldier's story: Sneed hears Mayor Daley's soldier son, Patrick, 32, will ship out for duty in Afghanistan next week.

"Patrick has been preparing for this for a long time, but it is still stunning news to his family at Christmastime," said a source.

Now, recall that the British government wouldn't allow their royal scion, son of Prince Charles, to go to a theater of heavy action nor did they allow reporting of his whereabouts to be released. This only makes sense for a variety of reasons.

For one thing, each soldier in a company at war needs to know that they are all equally important to their fellows. But, if one single soldier (like a British Royal son, or the son of a famous politician in the States) is held as more "important" doesn't that harm both the cohesion of the company and its safety?

Wouldn't the extra fear for this famous son's security cause extra pressure on the company to which he belongs, especially if the enemy is alerted to his location via the media?

And what of the self-respect of the famous son? Could that not be damaged, too? Patrick Daley was quoted by Sneed to have been quite self-effacing and desirous of starting at the bottom like everyone else when he first began his military career.

Here are a few of Daley's past quotes as reported by Sneed:

"I left West Point during my freshman year when I was 18 years old and always remembered their motto, "Duty, Honor and Country." But I was so young and not really old enough to understand what it really meant. But I do now."

At the time, Patrick Daley was 29 years old.

"Although my family has a history of serving in the military reserve, I will be the first person in my family to go active," said Daley, who decided to enlist rather than enter service through officers training. "It's a close bet I may make a career out of the military, and it's better to start at the bottom," Daley said then. "It will be an honor to serve my country."

Sneed's reporting could conceivably cause the Army to jump to special treatment for Patrick Daley to assure his safety, treatment that is quite specifically contrary to his wishes.

So, the question here is, did columnist Sneed possibly put Patrick Daley in more danger than being in a war zone would normally present to a young combat soldier? Could her report have possibly alerted the enemy that a son of a famous American is on his way to their area?

One wonders if had the son of Chicago's Mayor been about to hit the beaches of Normandy, if Michael Sneed would have alerted the Nazis that the Normandy invasion was about to happen just to get her "exclusive scoop"?

Vetted beforehand

It's ok -- she probably got her story ok'd by AlQueda beforehand so when the story broke it was already old news. Isn't that what these "journalists" do? Get cozy with the enemy, sympathesize with them, show them how evil the U.S. is?

Yeah, I know I'm making this up -- but just to emphasize the point that these are truly unthinking people, unlike any other generation in the past. It's always all about them, isn't it -- never, never put national interests first.

the sneed

Sneed is considered a joke by serious journalists in Chicago. Her "scoops" often are routine items reported elsewhere days earlier. She is a long-time toady and stenographer to the Daley family who from the start was part of the rehabilitation campaign for this son who many thought joined the army to salvage his future political prospects. She was trying to make him look good. I doubt much harm was done to security but this is typical of her sorry work. Even the terrorists probably don't have any trust in her.

  Maybe we need a special

Maybe we need a special prosecutor to find out who first 'outed' this soldier.

This item doesnt seem very

This item doesnt seem very threatening, but it does illustrate the cavalier attitude of the press whne it comes to military and secrets.  Not that this was or is a secret as I imagine one can get the info with a small amount of sluething.  But like I said the press has no ethics when it comes to secrets.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

I'm just a nobody, low-paid

I'm just a nobody, low-paid Sailor. I am not allowed to divulge when I am arriving to my next command nor allowed to divulge to my loved ones where my ship is heading nor when my ship is leaving or departing from ports. To disobey a lawful order will mean seing the Chiefs and the "old man".... Sneed need to see The Chief, pronto!

And I am a lowly

And I am a lowly airman...it's still illegal to divulge troop movements...especially in conjunction with real-world operations. COMSEC is still vital to the survival of our troops.

Hmmmm?

S-t-r-e-e-e-e-t-c-h.

I'd hardly equate young Daley with a Royal Prince.

BRITANNICUS SUM

They would if they could

Don't know if the Sun-Times endangered Daley in this case, but they sure would have liked to. That would have made them very proud of themselves.

slow day?

She made no mention of any specific operation or unit. It's no secret that we rotate troops in and out of theater.

I doubt that outside of the Chicago area the average Joe has any idea who the mayor is let alone that he has a son or what his name is.

Methinks thou doth protest too much.

"She made no mention of any

"She made no mention of any specific operation or unit. It's no secret that we rotate troops in and out of theater. "

While it is no secret that we rotate troops in and out of theater, the time-frame it happens in (or will happen) is secret. Airmen in my squadron weren't supposed to tell their spouses they were being deployed to Guam until after they were all there...and Guam isn't in the AOR! Unfortunately some blabber-mouth talked and the whole town knew about it in less than a day.

Secrets travel fast.

"I doubt that outside of the Chicago area the average Joe has any idea who the mayor is let alone that he has a son or what his name is."

Well, now Al Qaida in Afghanistan knows that the son of a high-profile American mayor is enroute and will be in theater for at least 90 days thanks to Ms. Sneed. They also know his name.

"Methinks thou doth protest too much."

Methinks ye doth not understand the precarious consequences of such a divulgence.

please...

When I hear that the army is complaining about this I'll believe it's the travesty you're making it out to be. I'm sure that Daley was briefed on opsec and mentioning the theater he was going to didn't break it. And saying he will be leaving next week in no way gives away when he will actually be arriving there as there will be stops along the way.

During the Scott Thomas Beauchamp kerfuffle the army and this website made mention of where he was deployed. That didn't seem to put anybody's panties in a bunch.

And the mayor of Chicago is "high profile" mostly to political junkies. Not to mention that there are how many other soldiers named Daley? There are around 27,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. I don't think the taliban is going to be mounting any costly campaigns to find the proverbial needle in the hay stack.

Then there is the fact that he is an enlisted man with limited intel to give to anyone and that the jihadis know we do not negotiate with hostage takers. So it would not make sense to to expend much effort to find someone who would be no more useful to them than any other american soldier they may capture.

agreed

As I said in an earlier post, Sneed is a Daley lapdog. I am sure the Daley family wanted this information publicized, to help polish the image of the screw-up son.. She never publishes anything about the Daleys without their approval. So blame them, not her; I am sure she has no clue about security protocol.

No biggie

Here is a story from a navy press release stating when and which ships are about to be deployed:

http://www.wtkr.com/global/story.asp?s=6845241

Here is another navy release detailing which ships entered the persian gulf and when:

http://www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=31751

The information about Daley is ridiculously inconsequential compared to this.

Your first link proves

Your first link proves nothing.

Now show me an official Department of the Navy press release detailing an upcoming movement and then your argument will be getting somewhere.

Your second link is certainly a Navy press release, but notice it is written in past tense...meaning they didn't release the information until after it happened.

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep;

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,

With peace on earth, good will to men." -H.W. Longfellow

It proves plenty

I printed out that story when it was first released. The time stamp on the website is  four days before they left. My son is on one of those ships and I know they left on the stated date.

The navy release that I can find on line is dated the next day but gives the same info.

http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=30912

Regardless of the 24 hour difference the information provided is far and away more significant than one troop going to a specified country.

Here is a navy press release telling us what ship is currently  in Bangladesh and mentions a Lt Jack Jensen by name. Now everybody who can read english knows he's over there.

http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=33813

The point is that there is a vast amount of information released to the public that gives  away vastly more strategic information than the mentioning of one service member.

Isn't there a huge

Isn't there a huge difference between discussing the plans of an entire ship of war and telling the world where a single, prominent soldier will be?

You bet there is

Here is the official press release dated prior to deployment:

http://www.secondfleet.navy.mil/files/Press%20Releases/2007/C2F%2007-35MA%20Kearsarge%20ESG%20deployment.pdf

What do you honestly think is going to be a more appealing and critical target? And what is more prominent, a warship or a single soldier who is amongst thousands of others? It doesn't take a general to figure out that a warship or any other unit is far more vital than a single soldier.

And here is a copy of the armys opsec program.

http://blog.wired.com/defense/files/army_reg_530_1_updated.pdf

And once Daley gets there he is hardly going to be "prominent".

It also doesn't take a

It also doesn't take a general to realize that a single soldier is far more vulnerable than a giant warship!

If you are a small enemy without much power, what are you going for first? A giant warship with thousands of men, giant cannons, and planes, or one small company where if you hit one guy his loss will be a big black eye for the enemy!?

In my opinion, our enemy in radical Islam that we face is less interested in attacking strongholds like a ship of war than they are nibbling at the edges and hitting strategic, political targets, like Patrick Daley might be.

The difference is obvious

But as I said earlier the enemy is not going to waste precious resources on a single soldier. They know we don't deal. And wherever he is in Afghanistan is going to be some sort of stronghold or base and even if he is out patrolling we kick the jihadis' asses on a regular basis. The son of the mayor of Chicago is not a strategic target otherwise I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be sending him over there in a situation with major risk of capture. He's going to be one of 27,000. His death or capture wouldn't be any more of a black eye than when any other of our fine troops is KIA or POW.

the mayors son?

Duncan Hunter has been serving in Iraq even as he runs for the seat in Congress his dad is vacating.

"everytime you take a shower you are a mass murderer"  -- the Profff

oh and

Any "regular" soldier

Any "regular" soldier doesn't have a Father who is mayor of one of the biggest cities in the country! There is a LOT of political benefit to the enemy to target this young man.

Opinions vary

Apparently the U.S. Army doesn't agree with you otherwise they wouldn't be sending him.

It seems to be a risk they are willing to take.

And what would the political benefits be? That a mayor's son is not afraid to serve his country? That regardless of social and political status a person would choose to serve? Seems like the jihadis would serve to show that we are all in this together. Daley wasn't gonna hide behind daddy.

Your insistence that he is more important than any "regular" soldier goes against anything that the armed forces teach.

We disagree almost

We disagree almost completely.

And I see no further value in the discussion as we are now in the stage of a simple repeating of our past statements.

 Look I know this is
