Daily Kos Week in Review: Paul Ryan, the New Nixon

The week of the Republican convention found Kossacks reflecting on what they already believed about the party: that its members are plutocratic racists and its vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan is a lying sociopath.

As usual, each headline is preceded by the blogger's name or pseudonym.

Denise Oliver Velez:  Ryan hates babies and the GOP favors starvation...

...The modern day Republican agenda is about denying food—food for the poor, food for the under-employed, food for the unemployed, food for those around the world facing drought, floods and famine...

MinistryOfTruth: ...and wasteful spending...

...Basically Republicans would rather light their money on fire than see it help non-white people...

The Wanderer: ...and in fact is beyond redemption

...[Republicans] want us to turn the clock back not to the supposedly idyllic Neverland of the 1950s, but to the 1850s; a time when the non-whites Knew Their Place and women were kept barefoot and pregnant and the great preponderance of wealth was concentrated in the hands of a few robber barons and you breathed foul air, ate tainted food and drank polluted water...

The Republican Party has lost its right to exist. My Party must die, in order for it to be saved. It can go off and call itself something else - The Party of God, perhaps (but maybe that's too close to Hezbollah). But it daren't call itself Republican any longer...

8ackgr0und N015e: Paul Ryan, party-pooper...

...[T]he GOP spent tons of cash to generate interest in their convention and their candidates. FOX spent tons of cash building out its social networking channels and visibility on Cable TV. And after they built this propaganda machine of epic proportions, they handed Ryan the keys and let him take it out on the track.

The whole world is now watching him take the wheel, slam the pedal to the metal, barrel outside the lines of decency, crash through the guard rails of common sense, and fling himself face first off the Cliffs of Mendacity...a lunatic leap Evel Knievel would have declined to attempt...

Hunter: ...or master salesman?

...[Ryan is] the greatest bullshit artist in politics today...Think a young, crooked Nixon channeling the theories of Ayn Rand, putting it through the sausage grinder of Orwell's worst fears, and delivering it with the smirking assurance of a Baghdad Bob...

It has become a bit of a parlor game to try to guess which of the current crop of blustering politicians are truly evil, and which are merely stupid. With Paul Ryan, though, there is no particular doubt. Paul Ryan is very smart, and Paul Ryan sells his vapid, Randian premises with enough raw horseshit and hucksterism to make even the most crooked car salesman in the country blush...
