On Pending Obama Contraception Coverage Announcement, USAT Is Clearly Scrambling

By Tom Blumer | February 10, 2012 | 10:42

Tom Blumer's picture

A "breaking" email I received from USA Today this morning is a definite sign of establishment press scrambling to give deceptive cover to an Obama administration mandate whose unpopularity continues to grow as more people become aware of it. It also shows the lengths to which the press will go to keep the relatively disengaged, which would include those who only primarily informed via email and other brief alerts without digging further, from encountering basic facts.

The email pretends that the president is about to announce a "decision" (as opposed to changing one), and refers to a "rule" without saying where the rule came from, or why:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

USATonObamaBirthControl021012

Points:

  • This isn't about "birth control," it's about "contraception" (abstinence has been known to be a pretty effective form of "birth control").
  • The "rule" is an ObamaCare-driven regulation which is a by-product of Nancy Pelosi's "we'll have to pass it before you seen what's in it" legislative subterfuge.
  • The claim that the rule only applies to "women" is in one important sense not true. The families of employed men who would have contraceptives of their covered spouses covered would be the "beneficiaries" of the "rule," not just "women." And that's before digging into whether any forms of male contraception which may exist or may be developed in the future might be covered.

Shoot, some disengaged readers who only look at the email's subject line headline may think it's tabloid trash about what form of future pregnancy prevention Barack and Michelle have decided to use themselves.

When clicking through to the link in the email at 9:15 a.m., we see that headline isn't about a "decision," it's about a "change":

APopenerOnObamaReligMandate021012at9am

"Free of charge"? What an interesting phrase, given that going with "no-cost contraceptive coverage" was a more succinct available option. The undercurrent is that Obama is being forced by a bunch of meanie zealots to take away a freebie.

Expect the scrambling to continue as the administration appears to be in backtrack mode. By the time it's all over, it could turn into a "Gosh, he listened. Isn't our Dear Leader wonderful?" exercise.

Whatever it is

Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 10:47am.

Yeah, they might want to "change" it, but they won't want to do away with it entirely.

I keep thinking about the rules Communist China had about population control and what more obvious way to do it except by making this "mandate" of birth control?

And they'll do this just like they did everything else, "this is for you, we're just trying to help you," when it's just a form of controlling the population that exists.

"Free of charge"?

Submitted by Newsbubba on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 11:19am.

How come everything that is paid for with tax dollars confiscated from the real "working men and women" is called "Free of charge"?  I guess that the money is still coming from "Obama's stash" yo?

You heard it hear first:  Bambi will come out with some flowery language that makes it sound like this has been settled with the church's and we can "now move forward" with this POS plan.  The Bishop's, bless their good hearts, will believe the lying bastard.

Catholics will then, once again, vote in the majority and reelect the RBFSOB.  Shortly after he is sworn in, HHS will once again announce that the rule is the rule, and "We the People" can Foxtrot off.

We are truly becoming a nation of sheeple being led to the slaughter by the wolves while the sheep dogs are being reduced in size and scope.

NOTE: Hey Big Sis, you big dyke, monitor this!

'Involuntary suicide'??? Jeez, coco, that's got a weird ring to it. Kinda like a 'suicide bomber' - except the suicide bomber's intent is to kill or maim as many people as possible. So it's kind of like killing yourself, but doing it accidentally???

I think Barry would be insulted that you've called him Satan's servant..............I think he probably feels that Satan works for him.

When the "death panel" meets to tell you the bad news that you ain't going to get the treatment you need to live, and that you will just have to die or punch out on your own, ask them which one of them plans on accompanying you!  If nobody volunteers for the trip, pick one.

Those "death panel" slots could be tough to fill after a few of those.

Pelosi is also scrambling (and rambling)

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 11:31am.

Nancy Pelosi claims that those mean old Republicans just want to hurt women!  Because she figures that's the line that will resonate.

And in what is a stretch, even for Nancy, and proof that the liberals are allowed to claim, without rebuttal, even the most outrageous things, she says

“Now there’s a move to, for some, to expand that to universities and hospitals and, indeed, they have even said they want this to apply to all employers -- not just Catholic employers -- to all employers,”

You have to read the whole thing to appreciate the depth of Nancy's delusion (I strongly suggest duct tape before you do).

She's really out there where the buses don't run.

Obama to Change...I doubt it

Submitted by NVRAT on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 12:02pm.

I would not count on him changing his mind permanently after all its an election year and most politicians will lie their heads off to gain office and Obama is no exception (he lies all the time anyway). All he has to say, if re-elected, is after reviewing to law it has been determined that it must go forward and be come the law of the land and, you Protestants, Catholics, Mormons, Muslims and all sectors of Religion will be forced to pay for everybody's contraception Pills, Condoms and Abortions.

It looks like Freedom of Religion is becoming a thing of the past. Another constitutional right trampled on.

Huckabee: 'We are all Catholics now'

Submitted by vrwc13 on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 12:21pm.

Huckabee facetiously thanked Obama for stirring the issue. "You have done more than any person in the entire GOP field, any candidate, has done to bring this party to unity and energize this party as a result of your attack on religious liberty," he said Friday morning.

"Thanks to President Obama, we are all Catholics now," he said to cheers at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Blonde, not impressed...

Submitted by vrwc13 on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 3:17pm.

Have to admit, I never really watched/listened to her much before. Read a number of her articles though.

She seemed a bit contrived and stand-up comedian at the same time. My gut feel is that she knew she was going to stump for Rmoney and that might have unconsciously been a bit nervous.

Did not really get anything memorable from it, but I myself may have just been waiting for her inevitable stumping.  Not sure her joke about Clinton and what he did (graphically explained by her) with Monica was appropriate at a conservative venue though.

And yes, the more I think of it she appeared nervous, even more so as she answered some questions from the crowd.  Not a real fan of hers anymore.

But, did like this from Santorum:

"As conservatives we lost heart," he said. "We listened to the voices who said that we had to abandon our principles and values to get things done. To win. But we hear those same voices today, that we have to learn our lesson, that we need to compromise, do what's politically reasonable and go out and push someone forward who can win. Well I think we have learned our lesson. And the lesson we learned is that we will no longer abandon and apologize for the principles that made this country great for a hollow victory in November."

...is exactly how I feel.

Contraception and abortion...

Submitted by taznar on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 12:12pm.

"This isn't about "birth control," it's about "contraception""

I've come to the conclusion people don't know what the word, "contraception" means. A contraceptive prevents conception. "Birth control" methods like "the pill" do not prevent conception. They prevent pregnancy from proceeding normally. The correct term for such birth control measures is "abortifacient".

So the rule doesn't just force contraception coverage, it forces abortion coverage.

Excellent and should-be obvious point re abortion and the pill

Submitted by Tom Blumer on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 12:31pm.

But there are contraception methods which prevent fertilization, e.g., IUDs.

So to be truly accurate, we should describe the mandate as forcing religious and religious-affilated institutions to cover contraception and pre-implantation abortions.

Correct

Submitted by taznar on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 1:04pm.

That's right. Any "barrier method" that prevents conception (condom, IUD, etc.) could rightly be called a contraceptive.

I have to wonder if places like Planned Parenthood explain these differences to women when they come in looking for options. If not, I might argue they're failing in the "informed" part of obtaining "informed consent".

"Birth control" methods like

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 1:43pm.

"Birth control" methods like "the pill" do not prevent conception.

That depend on the pill

Birth control pills work in different ways.

Some prevent conception by preventing ovulation. These, I suppose, would be called contra-ovum drugs or something (yes,  I made that up).

Others prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.  This is the type that can be considered "abortifacient."

That depends on the "pill"

Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 1:53pm.

The old-fashioned "pill" is designed to prevent ovulation. No ovulation, no possible conception. Hence it's role as a contraceptive.

Plan "B," on the other hand, prevents the uterus from accepting a fertilized egg, a zygote, hence it's use as "emergency birth control."

The newest "pill," is designed to do both, prevent ovulation and prevent implantation if fertilization does occur. It is both a contraceptive and "birth control," so ether term is applicable.
