Media Ignoring Expanded Childishness of Obama's 'Taunt a Republican While Giving' Effort

By Tom Blumer | December 15, 2011 | 19:54

Tom Blumer's picture

On Tuesday (at NewsBusters; at BizzyBlog), I noted an email I received from Obama For America -- I forgot to mention the subject line, which was "In honor of the GOP" -- that encouraged readers to give $3 or more to Barack Obama's reelection campaign and become entered to win dinner with the president and his wife. The email also promised donors that OFA would taunt (my word) a Republican acquaintance on their behalf with the fact that they just gave if they provided an email address to which to send the taunt. As will be shown later, establishment press coverage of this uniquely odious twist in campaign financing and conduct has been virtually non-existent.

In his commentary on the Obama campaign's childishness, the Wall Street Journal's James Taranto revealed that he had been forwarded a related OFA email targeting Facebook and Twitter users with another intensely annoying nuance. It reads as follows (bolds are mine throughout this post):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
Know someone on Facebook or Twitter who, day after day, populates your feed with the latest right-wing talk-radio chatter? Or your cousin who won't stop forwarding those chain email hoaxes? It can be frustrating.

So what do you do about it? You can go round and round in circles arguing with them--or you can have a little fun and make them pay. Literally.

Here's something new: Today, we're offering you the opportunity to make a donation to the Obama campaign inspired by your favorite conservative friend or relative.

You can choose to send them a note and let them know they've moved you to help build President Obama's 2012 campaign. You can let them know a donation was made in their honor, but not that it's from you (it will drive them nuts!). Or you can keep the satisfaction to yourself.

Whatever works for you.

By giving, you're focusing your efforts on making sure we spend the next year having conversations with voters on the issues that matter, rather than the same old arguments that no one wins.

So while your Republican friends are busy anxiously waiting to see what happens in Iowa and New Hampshire next month, make a donation today--and kindly remind them we have our candidate, and we're proud of it.

So now you can not only taunt your Republican or conservative acquaintance, you can be a complete coward and do so anonymously.

The people gave me grief for calling Obama "the Punk President" on Election Night 2008 clearly owe me an apology (which I'll never receive).

Since it doesn't involve the actual extraction of money from said Republican target, the "make them pay" part of the email must be referring to the idea that the target will suffer from anxiety attacks wondering who they inspired to give $3 to Obama. Really? Do they think most Republicans will even care? More likely, it will "inspire" them to tell others what jerks the Obama people are. Or is the "make them pay" part planting the seed that Team Obama now has their email address (perhaps collected illegally) and may decide to do something with it down the road?

A reader communicated his reaction to Mr. Taranto, at least as it relates to taunters with the integrity to reveal their names to their targets:

Mr. Postpartisan is encouraging people to derive satisfaction from deliberately antagonizing members of their own families, for Christmas. To the extent that there can be said to be a single meaning of Christmas across all denominations of the church and even among non-Christians who have come to enjoy the holiday, it's the exact opposite of what Barack Obama is calling for here. For most of the planet, Christmas is a season of good will--the season when we donate to the Salvation Army, the season when carols were sung across the trenches of the First World War, the season when we always get together with loved ones and mute our disagreements while we share a celebration of more important things.

For Barack Obama and the people who like his horrible letter, it's a time to make themselves feel a little bit better by making other people feel a little bit worse. They worship a mighty God in the blue states, and they commemorate the birth of his Son by punching back twice as hard. Totalitarian overtones aside, this is a very sad letter.

From all appearances, the Obama White House and the Obama campaign are being run by petulant adolescents who never grew up.

As I mentioned in the original post, a Republican or conservative campaign engaging in tactics such as these would be properly called out by the media for boorishness and arrogance, completely with nightly lectures on proper campaign etiquette and discussions of legal ramifications from dozens of TV and radio talking heads.

Not so with the establishment press and Obama For America. Though comprehensive searches are difficult to obtain in this case, I can say that searches on "obama email" (not in quotes) surfaced nothing relevant at the Associated Press's main national site, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. How utterly sad -- and typical.

Here was the response from a a campaign spokesperson:

Enough is enough. The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy – the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year. This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.

Tom, I've had this conversation with my ol' buddy Jer before, and he just doesn't see it the way that we do. I have no doubt that those finger displays were purposeful..............and given Boy Barry's petulance and immaturity, and complete lack of class (I'm absolutely serious about this statement - this clown has got to be one of the most 'classless' people I've ever had the misfortune to observe), it's no surprise that he did them - and, in fact, he's so self-absorbed that he probably thought it was pretty cool. And if my memory serves me well, he also did his 'finger' thing in that healthcare meeting - possibly to Paul Ryan - when he was sitting in the middle of the two tables and using up more time than anybody!!!

I have observed more than my share of them in professional practice. They truly believe that no one is capable of seeing through their derision, condescension and contempt. Of course, they are not as bright as they believe themselves to be, especially when they insult someone with poor impulse control and end up with a very angry person who they are unable to placate.

You aren't capable of making any "common sense" decisions related to Obama, and your denial regarding the most obvious middle finger events is ample proof of that.

The evidence is right in your face and far outweighs your 'opinion' of the matter - but like any Obama apologist, what YOU believe is far more important than the obvious truth.

Yes, he was just innocently scratching his cheek while talking about an opponent. We have been through this before. You do not bring your middle finger to your face EVAH while addressing a crowd. Evah. Eeee Veeee Ayyyyy Ahhhhh. Why can't you get that into your brain? Huh? Seriously, is the concept that hard to understand? But no, you would have us believe poor President Obama just got all sidetracked and mistakenly started to scratchin' the itchin's with his middle finger.

And yet amazingly, despite forgetting that one simple rule, the President somehow manages to remember to follow these other rules of public speaking with absolutely ZERO violations ---

  • Don't pick your nose.
  • Don't scratch your ass.
  • Don't stick your finger in your mouth to dig out remnants of lunch.
  • Don't clean your ears.
  • Don't wipe your nose with the flag.
  • Don't chew gum.
  • Don't talk with food in your mouth.
  • Don't scratch your nuts.

Yep. Not a single violation of any of those evah. Wait, how do you spell that? Oh, see above. But Mr. Innocent, yeah, juuuuuuuuuust can't keep that middle finger away from his face. Nope. Too friggin' hard.

No. We are not laughing at you now. You are not a joke with your continued insistence that it was all just innocent. We are laughing with you. Really we are. While we are giving a speech. Just up there. Pointing and laughing and holding our stomach and giving the cue to get a searchlight on you in the audience. Oh, is that banned as well during national speeches? Huh, someone ought to tell Mr. Innocent. Don't want him to accidentally do that.

1. He DID give Hillary the finger. I work with high-school kids. It's a common enough "sly" way of doing it, and everybody knows it. The HS kids deny it indignantly, too, which shows what level the BO campaign was onn.
2. He DID call Palin a pig. There is a better chance of being struck by lightning than the chace that snarky and juvenile obama, -- known for his narcissm and disregard for those who challenge him -- just HAPPENED to make the "lipstick" remark about ....wow, can you believe it...the woman who made her name in a speech where she talked about lipstick and ani animal. Watch the video and see tyhe snickers from all concerned.
3. The press release is just as inconvincing and standard business-as-usual politics as it was when it was first released. They made a running commentary all year about how mean McCain was, what a "dirty campaigner," while boosting obama as the messiah.

Bill Maher: 7/11/11 On the thread linked above, I called Maher's indictment of the Republican party "a sickening, despicable lie. And it disgusts me that this towering asshole continues to spew such filth."

Helen Thomas: 3/18/11 "Helen...ceased being relevant last century. Now she is notable only for her sick and shameful anti-Semitic, anti-Israel slanders"

Pelosi [a far left/liberal] was a miserable choice for House leader...As for Harry Reid, well...he's just a feckless buffoon." 7/9/11 I've been calling for Pelosi and Reid's ouster from leadership positions for nearly three years now due to chronic ineptitude."

Katie Couric: 11/22/10 [Re her ridiculous questions to Palin] "The woman should be released from her anchor--NOW!"

Mike Malloy: 10/13/10 "I don't understand why this demented nonentity is given free publicity." 2/27/11 "Liberals don't even bother with this sick freak" 11/11/10 referred to Malloy as a "maniac...engaging in his customary unhinged ravings..."

Michael Moore: 5/6/11 "Before I'm charged with endorsing Moore through silence, let me hasten to add 'amen' to the idiot part"

Keith Olbermann: 11/6/10 "If you had been paying any attention for the past three years, you would know...that I don't give a ratzass about what happens to Keith Olbermann."

Miscellaneous...4/16/11 Backed Governor Walker against the union 1/1011 Acknowledged [once again] that the MSM tilts left 4/5/11 Recommended that Brit Hume, Bret Baier or Chris Wallace replace Couric 6/26/11 Repeated my criticism of OBAMA'S knee jerk response to Cambridge police incident, just as I have criticized his clinging to guns and religion comment, his attacks on Fox News, and a number of other points of disagreement with the president  [my emphasis in italics and caps]
