At His 'Occupy' Incident Compilation, Big Journalism's Nolte Decries Derelict Press Coverage

By Tom Blumer | November 05, 2011 | 23:44

Tom Blumer's picture

As he accumulates his "Occupy Rap Sheet" over at BigJournalism.com, John Nolte has made some excellent points about the nature of the press's coverage which should not be missed. His incident count is up to 151. It will certainly grow based on more recent events which haven't yet made it to his compilation (this is just a sample): A $10 million arson arrest in Fort Collins, Colorado (really; HT The Other McCain); pushing a 78 year-old woman down a flight of stairs (she required a hospital visit); and a lack of basic safety so pervasive at Zuccotti park, the headquarters of the "movement, that "protesters put up (a) women-only tent to prevent sexual assaults."

Nolte's count is clearly an understatement of all that is actually happening. He also notes that the nature of the press's coverage serves to understate the disorder- and violence-based inclinations of the Occupiers (internal link is in original; bolds are mine):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

... when it came to the Tea Party, the MSM was notorious for amplifying a single incident (that was usually a lie) and using it to attempt to smear and define an entire movement. This is what you do when you want to quickly take out a political enemy.

The MSM’s contextual game changes, however, when their desire is to strengthen a movement and give it credibility and room to grow. By dutifully reporting individual incidents but not reporting on the growing scope and size of Occupy Wall Street lawlessness, the MSM is willfully covering up the violence, vandalism, and anti-Semitism that truly does define this movement.

Moreover, by intentionally keeping the pieces of this story scattered, the MSM is allowed to have their cake and eat it too. No one can accuse them of not reporting these incidents, but by choosing not to bring the pieces together, the MSM ensures the least amount of public relations damage is done to the Occupiers. ... Among others, The New York Times, Washington Post, Politico, and the LA Times have willfully chosen not to use the resources at their disposal to give the public an honest look at this growing menace. In their partisan minds, truth doesn’t trump agenda.

... What is true is that on October 18, pollster Doug Schoen (a Democrat!) discovered that a full 31% of Occupiers were willing to commit violence in pursuit of their agenda, whatever that is. As a response to this startling and frightening admission, the MSM either outright ignored or dismissed it. ... when it comes to their willingness to break the law, the Occupiers are keeping their word.

It isn't just the violence which is being covered up or minimized. Again, just a sample:

  • "Here's The Real Reason Why Occupy Wall Street Protesters Aren't Getting Kicked Out Of Zuccotti Park" -- "(New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's) longtime domestic partner Diana Taylor is on the Board of Directors at Brookfield Properties (which owns Zuccotti Park) along with John E. Zuccotti himself."
  • "Many Occupy Wall Street protesters live in luxury" -- among those arrested in New York during Occupy Wall Street's first month, "at least 95 of the protesters’ residences are worth approximately $500,000 or more. The median monthly rent for those living in apartments whose information is readily available is $1,850."
  • Its hostility towards capitalism and inclination towards collectivism, as captured in pictures at Michelle Malkin's blog early Thursday morning.

Over at Hot Air this afternoon, Allahpundit summarized it best:

... the coverage of OWS protests compared to the coverage of tea-party protests is the worst media double standard in recent history. Nothing compares, because nothing else involves this much distortion on both ends of the coverage.

Indeed.

Submitted by ant on Sun, 11/06/2011 - 12:36am.

Saw the video at Daily Caller. I was struck by what a bunch of arrogant little punks these people are, from the punks blocking the street to the little punk telling an EXTREMELY angry mother of a child caught in the middle to "F** Off". I think if her husband didn't pull her back that woulda been one bruised, crying, spoiled little OWS brat.
They're just lucky I'm not Mayor of any of these cities, I'd have sent the dogs and fire-hoses in after this latest tantrum. And reminded Obama that by not condemning this, he's condoning it. But, what do you expect, these are his foot soldiers, his civilian army, that's been talked about.

There are a few new ones now.

Submitted by ant on Sun, 11/06/2011 - 12:52am.

A drunken protester from Guatamala (illegal?) arrested for urinating on a cop car, an occupier went on a rampage and smashed up a McDonalds after they refused to give him free food, and this one, which scares me that they ARE going to kill somebody, a occupier has been arrested and charged with arson for allegedly setting an apartment complex under construction on fire which spread to a resident populated section of the same complex. This was at 3 AM, BTW, when people would be sleeping while the fire spreads. But Obama thinks they're like the Tea Party, which I guess makes sense if he believes what the MSM said about the TeaParty.
Most of these incidents, I think, can be found on Gateway Pundit, I may have to try to email Big Journalism with some sources.

Unbelievable BS posted by coin of the realm. ---

Submitted by matthewdean on Sun, 11/06/2011 - 10:28pm.

Unbelievable in the sense that he posts liberal mush mouth crap; and unbelievable also in the sense that the fool is allowed to keep on keeping on with it.

It's not like he presents any nuggets for thought or genuinely serious points for consideration as a means of bringing disparate views to either common ground or resolution.

Is he perhaps permitted to remain on board as an exemplar of the stultification and putrefaction of liberal thought; or rather as an in-house example of liberal bias?

As an exercise in dealing with liberal loons, it would be much more entertaining if his regurgitation of liberal talking points, as 'coin of the realm', were put in temporary abeyance through the exceedingly gratifying process labeled "ACCESS DENIED"; so that his eventual, though certain, reemergence as an initially recondite lib could once again be exposed with vim, vigor, and conservative veracity.

Nice comment. I started out in just such a frame of mind, but after the constant refusal of most to engage in such repartee as evidenced by the insults and labels in their replies, I just gave up.

I will miss this board but I guess I am just too disruptive to it's nature as a mutual admiration society for the re-enforcing of an imaginary reality. One where exceptional people are idiots and every single thing a democrat does is bad and the MSM is biased just like the right wing media. Where people turn to real idiots for facts bc everyone knows that scientists are all about the money and scholars are all biased. We will go get the real story from Rush and Sean.

Well folks, the MSM news ain't politically biased. It is biased towards facts and reality. The MSM commentary is also so biased, but has taken on the flavor of Fox bc Fox is so egregiously partisan and dishonest that just pointing that fact out seems to be itself a bias. Well, pointing out falsehoods and partisan rhetoric ain't biased.

And back when you were hayate - you specifically told me that you had been an entrepenuer and a small business owner, and had worked for some other well-know private outfits........and that you had multiple degrees in some high-tech fields........and, like an idiot fool, I believed you!!! And now I've discovered that you LIED to me??? Now I'm really depressed.

I'd like to comment more on your posts, bc I think I could make a few cases against what you write, but it's really hard to come up with a good response bc I can't understand your rambling and meandering writing style, and also the lack of coherence.

I'm sure your pals back at the Kos will welcome you with open arms, and congratulate you for surviving in such a hostile atmosphere here at NB.............where everybody is partisan and dishonest and biased, bc we are all right-wingers and idiot conservatves.

But we know you'll be back again, as a drive-by farter with another pseudonym, attempting to stink up the joint and leave your smelly residue for everyone else to deal with.
