Erika Smith at Indy Star: 'I Really Don't Care' About Truth of Andre Carson's Comment
On Wednesday (at NewsBusters; at BizzyBlog), quoting Indiana Congressman Andre Carson's inexcusable, hateful comment at a Congressional Black Caucus event on August 22 (key sentence: "Some of them in Congress right now of this Tea Party would love to see you and me ... hanging on a tree"), I observed that "Carson was obviously accusing some of his congressional colleagues, whom he gutlessly would not name, of actually wanting (not metaphorically wishing) to see himself and his black colleagues lynched." I should also note that in an earlier segment of the quote originally cited by Matthew Balan at NewsBusters, Carson said, of Tea Party sympathizers wishes, "And this is beyond symbolic change." This is why I also wrote that "The meaning of the words Carson used is not arguable."
With a disregard for the truth and gutlessness similar to Carson's, Indianapolis Star columnist Erika D. Smith wrote today that the congressman "had the guts to stand up and say what we've all seen over the last three years," while also asserting that "I really don't care" if any congressmen actually want to lynch anyone. Here's more; brace yourself (bolds and numbered tags are mine):
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Smith: Carson had the guts to say what some feel
In recent days, I've tried to explain to many of my white friends and colleagues exactly why I support what Rep. Andre Carson said. And why I hope that he never takes it back.
My reasons, I've discovered through some friendly debates, aren't entirely logical. They're emotional. [1]
When I opened my Web browser Wednesday morning and read the headline "Rep. Carson: Tea party wants blacks 'hanging on a tree' " on IndyStar.com, my first thought was: "Yup! That's about right." My second thought was: "It's about time somebody said it."
That was before I even opened the article.
... I admit that the details of what he said didn't concern me. Are there members of Congress who literally want to lynch black people? I don't know. And to be honest, I really don't care. [2]
Because that's not the point.
The point is that the essence of what Carson said is true. There is racism in Washington and a lot of it is coming from an extreme faction of the tea party -- a faction that mainstream Republicans have chosen to indulge and no one, until now, has bothered to check. The GOP would rather pretend that faction doesn't exist and silence anyone who dares to point out the obvious by calling him a "racist." Talk about doublespeak. [3]
... (Many who disagree with me) think the personal attacks on Obama are just the lumps that come with being president of the United States. That because people called President George W. Bush "Hitler" and "stupid," it's the same as Obama being called an ape. [4]
... When Obama is criticized, and veiled -- or not so veiled -- threats of racism are lobbed by an extremist faction of the tea party, [5] we see it through the lens of history, a history that didn't begin anew just because Obama was elected.
Notes follow.
[1] -- The guess here is that Ms. Smith's "friendly debaters" have logically suggested that it's not a good idea for a sitting Congressman to say that some of his colleagues would like to see him lynched -- as Carson irrefutably did, despite an unbylined Associated Press reporter's contention that he only "used a lynching metaphor." Ms. Smith illogically insists that the actual English language meaning of what Carson said doesn't matter, and credits herself for "emotional" argument. No ma'am; the word is "dishonest."
[2] -- Smith's reaction is a textbook example of "prejudice," that is, "an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason." She doesn't care what Carson actually said, and she doesn't care whether there are congresspersons who "literally want to lynch black people." She's got her mind made up: She feels that least some Tea Party-sympathetic congresspersons (perhaps even African-American Allen West) are racists while failing to offer any evidence, and what she feels is all that matters.
[3] -- Y'know Erika, and Congressman Carson, and all who are giving Mr. Carson media cover, if you're so convinced that there is a "faction" of racist Tea Party-sympathetic congresspersons in Washington right now -- racist to the point of being comfortable with seeing Congressional colleagues killed solely because of their race -- you should be able to name at least one of them. Either you can't, because there aren't any, or you won't, because you're gutless cowards who apparently would rather let the alleged racism continue than identify it with a person or persons so it can be addressed. Instead, you've chosen to smear every Tea Party-sympathetic congressperson (definitely including Allen West) with the charge that they're death-wishing racists themselves or are comfortable being philosophical brothers and sisters with those who are.
[4] -- Erika seems to have totally forgotten the frequent left-wing "Chimpy McHitler" references during the Bush 43 years. Apparently I'm supposed to just sit here and accept as a fact that likening Bush to a chimp isn't racist or degrading. I'm not going to do that. It is likewise inexcusable for those who disagree with or don't like Obama to employ simian references to him (however, we should and will reserve the right to call his actions and statements "stupid" if we believe they are; if Ms. Smith doesn't like it, she can pound sand).
A Google News search on the president's last name and the simian word Smith used returned eight items (it should return nine after this post appears, thanks to what Ms. Smith wrote):
- Two of the results link to Smith's column.
- A third is a Chronicle of Higher Education item by Clarence Lang, an African-American, who is an Associate Professor in both African-American Studies and History at the University of Ilinois. Lang writes of the April case of "an Orange County Republican official who distributed an e-mail to party members depicting Obama's head on the body of an (simian reference)." The woman involved has been censured; it appears that the first person to call for her resignation was a Republican.
- Three of them are about how Abe Lincoln was in his day called "the Illinois (simian reference)"; none refer to Obama as one.
- The remaining two items are of no political relevance.
Thus, it would appear that in the last 30 days, the only people in the media who have written about the president being compared to a three-letter word for a simian animal have been ... two African-Americans (until I excerpted Ms. Smith). Surely if Tea Party sympathizers were engaging in such activity routinely there would have been something written up about it in the past thirty days. There hasn't been, because it rarely if ever happens.
[5] -- "Threats of racism"? Erika, did you read your copy? Reading the sentence as written, you'd think that Tea Partiers are saying, "Mr. Obama, if you don't do what we want, THEN we're going to start being racist." So I guess that means it hasn't happened yet. Zheesh.
Assuming that Ms. Smith really meant to write "racist threats," who associated with any "faction" of the Tea Party has made them -- veiled or not? What have they said? Readers, based on how she treated Congressman Carson's statement and her utter disregard for objective truth, can safely assume that until she presents specifics, Ms. Smith is simply being "emotional" and has nothing to offer except her vivid, dishonest imagination.
Columnists have a duty to do everything they can to tell the truth in what they write. Erika Smith has said that when it comes to certain matters, she simply doesn't care about the truth. The Indy Star has a serious problem on its hands which really needs to be addressed.

The main stream media is between a rock and a hard place... BHO is president largely because the MSM did not do its job of vetting him... Each of them, Erika Smith included, has to hope that something terrible will happen to our country to save their hypocritical cookies... These "journalists" are so far gone at this point that they will say anything...
Just remember: you and I have to earn some form of preparation, experience or training for what we do... "Journalists" simply need to show up -- some of the time!

I have no fear of criticizing any black person for his/her actions, and have done so here and in my personal life as a manager, and yeah, sometimes some idiot will throw the race card (it's inevitable), but as long as you continue to make it about unacceptable behavior, nothing will go wrong.
The race card in response to criticism has been SO overplayed since The Won came to office that it has lost all meaning (at least to me). I no longer care. And the sooner these "victims" who continually play the race card understand that it's lost its power to (at least temporarily) stop people in their tracks, the sooner they will have their little "light bulb moment". It's the constant repetition which gets tiresome. The 'fact' of the historical ties of the Democratic party to the KKK and segregation is certainly no source of pride, but it is a reality which I have always readily acknowledged. However, the Democratic party of that era bears very little resemblance to the contemporary Democratic party--and hasn't for decades.
Now my "3 or 4 times a week reminder" quip was probably an overstatement, but I've been performing an archive search for the past hour and a half and there are numerous references which I've found and noted--over 20 on separate threads this spring and summer so far--and I've barely scratched the surface.

In the 19th century, it was the Lincoln Republicans and the Religious Left who were in the vanguard of the anti-slavery movement and the principal architects of advances in civil rights. The record of Democrats during that period as well as a significant chunk of the 20th century was abysmal. The record of the Religious Right is mixed. Many southern segregationists considered themselves to be members of the Religious Right. But there have also been many who would identify themselves as part of the Religious Right who have been and are staunch advocates for civil rights.

However, they should answer for their use of race as a political tool and the failure of their social programs that are created on the basis of race.

I've never tried one of those things - fresh water waves. I think I'd rather be out in the ocean, with the sky and the wind and the mountains and palm trees.........and the sea turtles coming up right next to me.......and the whales in the springtime........and the fish on the reef...........and the occasional shark.........................with the blue green sets stacking up on the horizon, trying to get in a good position to catch the one that I want..........and trying to make a longshot that is throwing out and tubing and reeling down the reef.........and getting tubed in the process, and then just barely squeaking out of it at the end of the ride!!!
Of course, paddling back out and checking out the babes in their teenie little thongs isn't a bad gig either!!! Hahahahahaha!!!

Leftist Truths

These people are all spouting Leftist Truths. But remember, Leftists don't need, nor do they rarely use, facts. They FEEL - and that is enough for them. While Projecting the "extremeness" of what they say is the way that Conservatives are moving towards, THEY have been the EXTREME factions of their ideology.
Conservatives, on the other hand, are merely embracing and expounding all of the basic tenets that MADE American the greatest country the world has ever known. Conservatives are only extreme when shown in contrast to any Leftist group or thought processes.
This type of inflammatory Leftist rhetoric will increase as this year passes on into the next and heading closer to the election. It has GOT to be met head on with strong attacks of our own. And you know what Harry Truman said about giving people hell:
"I didn't give 'em hell, I just gave 'em the truth and it seemed like hell."
Isn't that the creed of the Left?

Back on Uncle Sam's plantation
Star Parker - Syndicated Columnist - 2/9/2009 8:00:00 AM
Six years ago I wrote a book called Uncle Sam's Plantation. I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it. I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas -- a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.
I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps. A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s, that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty.
A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from "How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"
Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems -- the kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others. The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.
Through God's grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is. I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, passed by a Republican Congress and signed 50 percent. I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producing American capitalism.
But, incredibly, we are going in the opposite direction.. Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poorAmerica on socialism.
Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, "Thank you, Suh." Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers . . . they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash.
There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday ofAbraham Lincoln. Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.
In an op-ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Mr. Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short term economic stimulus. "This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending -- it's a strategy for America 's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education."
Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place "with unprecedented transparency and accountability." Yes, sir, we heard it fromJimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education. Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 -- The War on Poverty -- which President Johnson said "...does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty."
Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single-parent homes and out-of-wedlock births.
It's not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama's invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.. Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?

if whites broadbrush all African-Americans with the negatives of the worst? It doesn't matter if it's true or not because the comment is just "emotional" and no doubt applies to some. I'll try and remember this piece the next time someone alleges racism. Nice to know that no one needs to bother being civil anymore.

My dear Erika,
Of COURSE you don't care about the truth. That would be a terrible inconvenience wouldn't it?
Speaking for myself, and I am betting MILLIONS of other white AMERICANS (not anglo-americans or irish americans or swedish americans, et al) I am sick unto death of the black underachievers and moochers in this country, who are and have been getting a free ride for decades, whining and telling us it's not enough. I am sick to death of MY heard earned money being forciby taken from me and re distributed to the underclass who cannot, or better yet, who WILL NOT take responsibility for themselves. In spite of all the affirmative action and social programs put into place, it's still just not enough, is it?
Let me tell you something about your Obama.....we don't dislike him because he's black, hell we hate his white side too! We dislike him because he lies, is arrogant, is in way over his head and cannot do anything but point the finger and blame anyone but himself.
You and Mr Carson can go pound sand and maybe realize you have all outdone yourselves with this racism shit. It ain't the 70's anymore and whitey isn't buying it. Go tell that to your homies and your flash mobs and
all the affirmative action failures that have been produced by the DEMOCRATS in this country whose policies were put in place to keep you all where you are.
I put it to you this way: It was muslim folk who were the slave traders and rounded up the blacks in african nations and brought them to the new world. What kind of life would you all have if that hadn't happened? Have you given that a thought? Would you all still be dancing around fires with bones in your noses? Well, would you? Is that an inconvenient truth?
If AMERIKKKA is so damn bad, then pack up, the lot of you and go back where you all claim you came from.
Simple enough. Liberia has plenty of room or so I've heard.
Stop laying the blame for the failures and disintegration of the black race everywhere but where it belongs.

Erika is veering close to sociopathy.
Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 11:21am.
A central theme of the sociopathic profile is "the ends justify the means". The problem is the end is complete and utter chaos and abandon of any moral or ethical purpose or concern, and the means include anything from intrigue to horrific violence. Add into this a certain narcissistic element through the lens that I might translate as "I am [insert minority], I have been oppressed, I am therefore better". There is no logic to any sociopathy or narcissism, as they have a somewhat dissociative quality to them. Human nature dictates we all should have some basic connection and concern for each other, but I find that absent in this woman and in Carson.
The metaphor excuse did not work for Carson. The sociopathy will not work for Erika. If their words end up in violence, they must be held to account for them. It will be quite interesting to hear a defense using their words as justification for an accused offender. As we were harangued during the Giffords incident, words can have consequences. They have to be held to the higher standard they kept pushing.
Dr.,

A female friend of mine was, I was told, removed from her mother because her mom was diagnosed as sociopathic. Apparently, she had no pangs of conscience or guilt in hurting other people or animals, you'd know better than I if that's true of the condition. My point being, any racial violence and the resulting pain will not only not be recognized by the race-agitators who fed the beast, but no sympathy, compassion or responsibility will likely be truly heart-felt and the violent results of their lies assuredly 'blamed' on someone else.
Thus the danger of sociopathy + narcissism.
Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 2:44pm.
Sociopathy is an utter lack of compassion, conscience or guilt. A more recent concept, called alexithymia, refers to what we used to call "emotional intelligence". The concept of alexithymia is that a person with this specific trait (it is not a disorder recognized by DSM) is incapable of processing the emotions of others and therefore would interact with an inappropriate response. There is a bit more to it dimensionally, but it is an interesting part of a larger theory that was called "EmQ", or the emotional quotient. Ericka's EmQ would rate in the lower half of the population based on this observation, as I dig through the literature and forensically break down what she is saying.
I have discussed narcissism before, and I see a lot of narcissism on behalf of those who are sociopathic or have what could be termed more severe forms of alexithymia symptoms. The narcissism, through the phraseology Ericka uses to say she is one of a select few to be intelligent enough (in her own mind) to recognize what she thinks is the validity of Andre Carson's horrific diatribe, is just one marker. What I fear is the malignancy component of this is her implication that "everyone knows it's true" essentially condones an attitude whereby any violence that might occur as a result of their provocation will be dismissed by excuses as you said. Narcissists blame everyone but themselves for the aftermath of their self-worship. Malignant narcissists want to tear down the world around them when it does not acknowledge their self-imagined greatness. Sociopaths plainly do not care what happens, and to some extent the more horror the better. Add narcissist plus sociopathy (or severe alexithymia, if you will) and you have the makings of a violent, amoral outcome.
That's scary.

Good grief, Doc, that's a scary thought, especially when you consider Soetoro. I know you didn't mention his name above, but as I was reading that, especially the last 4 sentences, you were describing him as well. Especially the earlier part about not being able to process emotions of others and having an inappropriate response. How many times have we see that on his part?
I keep wondering how much more of that we'll see and how much worse it can get and how will it affect the office of POTUS?(based on your definitions, I see him as malignant narcissistic, he's been tearing down this country)

Hard to tell, Jon.

Malignancy is an older psychiatric term, but it still has meaning.
What I see in Obama is a serious mismatch between rhetoric and action in dealing with difficult situations. Above all other things, narcissists obsessively avoid situations where they may be held accountable for results they are unable to control and in a way that exceeds normal human nature. Secondly, narcissists are quite fond of the sounds of their own voices or their own communications to the point where nothing is more important than the attention they generate. Finally, narcissists display a core belief that they alone are able to understand what others cannot.
The first feature, avoidance of accountability, manifested itself through a lack of written detail on what how he proposed to deal with the manufactured crisis of the debt ceiling debacle. I add "manufactured' in the sense that there was little or no technical detail given as to the August 2nd dating, and no officials who reported to him ever gave an adequate accounting of how this August 2nd date was calculated. It is also notable that no viable budget was presented for over two years, and the one that was finally delivered essentially was unworkable as his own party in majority in the Senate unanimously rejected it. There is a disconnect therein, and avoiding responsibility has been the keyword. The constant "Blame Bush" mantra is no longer playing with the public for a large measure. Even if the guy is still considered likeable by the public, no president has ever been re-elected in the post-depression era with the sustained unemployment that we have suffered. Add to this the press talking about how they have felt excluded from him at times when he is not able to control the situation. Responsibility avoided and dodged again. Imperiously commanding the leadership of both houses of congress, who are constitutionally equal to him in terms, to appear at a specific date and time makes him sound like a petty dictator. We are also seeing willful disregard of constitutional obligations to execute and defend laws vigorously and then these actions justified based on emotion alone. Malignancy manifests as willful disregard for those who have equal status and aversion to rules which are not in concordance with the narcissist's personal agenda. Score an eagle on both.
In the second consideration, the volume of "critical" speeches on the economy which have promised action but delivered nothing but more hollow rhetoric is notable. There has been minimal follow-through and follow-up on his administration's part with any proposals that have come forth lately, and more worrisome is the rhetorical shift to promoting opponents as unpatriotic and dissent or disagreement as a form of hatred or bigotry. These are messages that strengthen the notion of malignancy.
For our third act, we have the upcoming "major jobs speech" which will more than likely be more of the same pattern. More taxation, more spending and more borrowing which will more than likely produce no results but more burden on taxpayers. The green jobs debacle has already borne spoiled harvests. Infrastructure spending sounds great to many, but how many times can you build and re-build the same stretch of highway or build an unused high-speed rail network that begins and ends in nowhere? These all look like attempts to immortalize himself in stone, steel and concrete. I would also add that there is no national priority list as to what needs done, when and how much cost will be involved. Again, we see the avoidance of responsibility and accountability and more hollow rhetoric and blame.
I can point to other situations where I find this president's conduct troubling, but the one that comes to mind is Operation Fast and Furious. There are real casualties of this misguided program, and there seems to be little or no interest in the mainstream media in covering what is becoming a clearer picture of a major blunder by Holder and Obama. At the very least, Obama needs to address the situation but has thus far had the luxury of an obedient, drooling and worshiping media feigning interest in the matter. To see that this was a badly mismanaged program that has lead to death and yet little or no media attention is being paid to it is also troubling.
Wow....well done
Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 09/05/2011 - 7:59pm.
Once again you wrote something masterful. Thank you for that, Doc.
I should also add the other situation that had consequences which we touched on last week or the week before and that's those rolling blackouts in the name of global warming. They claim they are saving lives by doing that, but as we have seen before and will probably see again, lives will be lost in those blackouts, you having seen/heard first hand of it in your department.(I'm speaking from memory, if I get a detail wrong, I apologize)
I speak of course of the EPA which is under direct authority of the bogus potus and of course the bogus claims that they will reduce respiratory ailments, which makes no sense, people are going to have ailments of one kind or another, what are they going to do, "prevent" all of them?
If the EPA were allowed to continue their course, more people WILL die, it's happened before and it's a guarantee that it will happen again come January 2012 which is when they want to shut those plants down in Texas with no alternative in place to compensate and there's no telling what kind of winter we will have, Texas is known for its myriad of weather conditions year round. And we sure as hell can't trust the federal government when they say emergency facilities and hospitals will not be affected.
That's another situation that needs to be investigated and prosecuted because under any law, state or federal, that's manslaughter and the EPA committed it.
