Not News: IPCC Economist's Statement That 'Climate Change' Is Really About Wealth Redistribution

By Tom Blumer | November 19, 2010 | 22:30

A  A
Tom Blumer's picture

I owe Ottmar Edenhofer thanks for two things.

First, I am grateful that Edenhofer, a German economist who is "co-chair of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Working Group III on Mitigation of Climate Change," has a last name on which searching is easy. I quickly determined that his name last name doesn't currently come up in searches at the Associated Press's main web site, the New York Times, the Washington Post, or the Los Angeles Times.

That's because he hasn't said or done anything newsworthy, right? Wrong. What's newsworthy is my second reason for thanking him. First covered at NewsBusters yesterday by Noel Sheppard, and described this evening in an Investors Business Daily editorial, Mr. Edenhofer has proffered the principal motivation behind the "climate change movement" -- redistribution of wealth (bolds are mine):

The Climate Cash Cow

A high-ranking member of the U.N.'s Panel on Climate Change admits the group's primary goal is the redistribution of wealth and not environmental protection or saving the Earth.

Money, they say, is the root of all evil. It's also the motivating force behind what is left of the climate change movement after the devastating Climategate and IPCC scandals that saw the deliberate manipulation of scientific data to spur the world into taking draconian regulatory action.

Left for dead, global warm-mongers are busy planning their next move, which should occur at a climate conference in relatively balmy Cancun at month's end. Certainly it should provide a more appropriate venue for discussing global warming than the site of the last failed climate conference — chilly Copenhagen.

Ottmar Edenhofer ... told the Neue Zurcher Zeitung last week: "The climate summit in Cancun at the end of the month is not a climate conference, but one of the largest economic conferences since the Second World War." After all, redistributing global wealth is no small matter.

Edenhofer let the environmental cat out of the bag when he said "climate policy is redistributing the world's wealth" and that "it's a big mistake to discuss climate policy separately from the major themes of globalization."

... Edenhofer claims "developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community" and so they must have their wealth expropriated and redistributed to the victims of their alleged crimes, the postage stamp countries of the world. He admits this "has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole."

It has everything to do with a different kind of green.

... Given this administration's willingness to compromise American sovereignty, we could soon see Americans taxed to fund a global scam — the ultimate form of taxation without representation.

So science has been abused as a vehicle for justifying worldwide wealth redistribution. Gosh, that's what many of us have been saying for years. That's what the Climategate e-mails clearly demonstrated. It's nice to see that Mr. Edenhofer from his position of influence at the IPCC agrees, and I thank him for his frankness.

Those who wish to brush up on their German can go to the original NZZ interview here. Google's English translation of the article is here. The money quote, as translated, is: "But one must say clearly that we distribute by climate policy de facto the world's wealth."

Regardless of whether they do anything with the story, it must not be easy being green at the news outlets mentioned in the second paragraph of this post, or anywhere else in the establishment press where they've been swallowing the human-caused global warning propaganda all these years. It shouldn't be easy being a green collaborator either; someone should ask GE's Jeff Inmelt what he makes of Edenhofer's remark. In the pre-New Media days, all of these folks could have gotten away with ignoring mistakes like Edenhofer's. Now they all just look like fools, as they watch their credibility continue to sink into the not-rising ocean.

Cancun

Submitted by KC Mulville on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 11:05pm.

I wonder if they chose Cancun because Al Gore might show up. (Every time Al Gore attends a climate conference on global warming ... it snows. Very embarrassing.) They must figure that if they go to Cancun, it won't snow, not even for Al.

Scratch a lot of

Submitted by Chris Norman on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 11:59pm.

Scratch most liberal/environmentalist ideas and you will find the rusted plans of wealth redistribution under their new shiny surfaces. There you will also find the decrepit plans of maximization of government control on resources, production, and personal behavior. I propose we change "environmentalism" to "envirosocialism".

That's Right: Not News

The enviros are on the ropes with climate change. Climate Gate was a nuclear explosion in the heart of their cause, and more and more people are aware that there is no there there. Even liberals know there's inadequate (and that's being kind) documentation. Look at how they do not defend it the was they once did.

"developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community"

Where is troglodyt for once? He could tell us if that is the right word. Expropriated?

1 : to take exclusive possession of : annex <no one should appropriate a common benefit>
2 : to set apart for or assign to a particular purpose or use <appropriate money for the research program>
3 : to take or make use of without authority or right.

First of all, the developed countries pumping more CO2 into the air is good for the developing world.

Estimates vary, but somewhere around 15% seems to be the common number cited for the increase in global food crop yields due to aerial fertilization with increased carbon dioxide since 1950. This increase has both helped avoid a Malthusian disaster and preserved or returned enormous tracts of marginal land as wildlife habitat, land that would otherwise have had to be put under the plow in an attempt to feed the growing global population.

Second, no there is no second. There would be a second if it was about pollution. But the developed world has strict pollution controls.

This is just bizarre. If there is damage as they claim, the goal would be to fix it before it gets worse. Not paying off countries we have harmed.

1.) You should quote the actually merriam-webster entry on expropriate and not the one on appropriate.

2.) You can translate it like that. What I wouldn't have used is the word basically. The german word "quasi" as used in the original should be translated by "quasi" or "sort of". What he wants to convey is a metaphor. That becomes apparent when you consider that nobody owns the athmosphere and thereby it can't be expropriated.

3.) Who made those estimates? Junkscience forgot to source their claim.

Thank you.

I started to fill in the google field and picked the first thing that came up without realizing it. You were right. Wrong definition

1.: to deprive of possession or proprietary rights

2 : to transfer (the property of another) to one's own possession

Sorry, you have to ask Junkscience. Or see if you can find it yourself.

Come on Big Guy. It would go a long way if you helped out.

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 10:00am.

If you doubt something, find a valid credible source to discredit it. Don't ask others to do it for you.

I forwarded a reasonable claim. More CO2 equals More Crops. Not outside the scope of a normal thing to expect. If you doubt that, it is on you to prove it. Why is this so difficult to understand? You would go a long way toward being a valued member if you were to just follow that simple basic guideline for interacting. I know you are not stupid. Please. Work with me here.

As such, I will go a little forward. Here is a source.

What was learned
Among other things, Li et al. report that "elevated CO2 concentration owing to CO2 application leads to remarkable increase in leaf area index and shoot biomass, and also generates the higher value of leaf area duration that can benefit the photosynthesis in the growth stage and yield increase in crop." More specifically, they report that the 40-ppm increase in CO2 concentration increased grain yield by 4.2% (0.105%/ppm) under natural conditions, while with irrigation and fertilization (treatment 3) the 14.5-, 40- and 54.5-ppm CO2 concentration increases increased grain yield by 6.3% (0.434%/ppm), 13.1% (0.328%/ppm) and 19.8% (0.363%/ppm), respectively
.

Now, if you feel this is truly wrong. Counter it with your own valid source. What say?

I do thank you for the German translation there.

The Next Thing

Submitted by Junk Science Skeptic on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 1:29am.

The Climate Scam is so close to being over that the next scam is already in the works.

Next up is "biodiversity." Where weather and climate can be objectively measured, the actual number of some little critter is a pretty fungible statistic.

Basically an update of the old "hand over the money, or the dog gets shot" movie gag, the biodiversity scam works by having an unproductive country announce that it will kill off endangered species "x" by development, unless the productive countries . . . wait for it . . . you guessed it, unless the productive countries pay up.

Not that the development would be likely to happen either way, but the same end result as the climate scam, "pay us money or else."

Not only does biodiversity cover the wealth redistribution goal, but it can also be used, and has already been used, to block energy production at home by declaring that productivity in any form is a danger to endangered species "x" or to biodiversity in general.

When the Obots get run out of DC in 2012, that wil probably be the final nail in the coffin of the Climate Scam, so look for a UN panel on biodiversity to release a predictable report in 2013 or so.

No, we're not

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 3:24pm.

No one is confusing means and ends here.  The "ends" are the redistribution of wealth, mainly from specific "wealthy" nations to the "developing" nations.  The "means" are taxation.  Science, or, as is the case here, the blatant manipulation of science, is merely the "justification" which is used to hide both the means and the ends. The cat is out of the bag.
