WH Press Secretary Goes After British Press; Can Clintonian Conspiracy Theories Be Far Behind?

Gibbs0509Those of us seeking truth in reporting, especially the inconvenient truths about a Democratic presidential administration, are re-learning the lessons of the Clinton Era:

  • First, that the "newspapers of record," the Associated Press, and the major TV networks (except Fox) are usually the last places you want to go to learn what's really going on, and the first place to visit if you want a rendition of the Democratic-left wing party line.
  • Second, that some of the best reporting and fact-checking can be found in editorials at the Wall Street Journal and Investors Business Daily.
  • Third, that the many of the British papers will dig up and expose administration-embarrassing news most of America's newsprint apparatchiks will bury if they find them, and ignore if they can.

In 2009, there is a fourth lesson, which is that much of the investigative reporting vacuum created by the establishment media is being filled by the center-right blogosphere.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs is very upset that Lesson Three is again in force, and made his displeasure known (HT Politico) in reaction to a UK Telegraph report alleging that photos from the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq "include images of apparent rape and sexual abuse":

"That news organization has completely mischaracterized the images," Whitman had said. "None of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article."

Gibbs also cautioned reporters against the reliability of the British press. "I want to speak generally about some of reports I've witnessed over the past few years in the British media and in some ways I'm surprised it filtered down," Gibbs said.

"Let's just say that if I wanted to look up, if I wanted to read a writeup today of how Manchester United fared last night in the Champions League Cup, I might open up a British newspaper," he continued.

"If I was looking for something that bordered on truthful news, I'm not sure that would be the first stack of clips I picked up."

In the Telegraph story, Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, who conducted an investigation of the treatment of detainees at Iraq's American-run Abu Ghraib prison, is quoted as saying, "These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency" and supporting the president's decision not to release them.

Gibbs didn't have to go anywhere near as far as he did to swat down the story. He was so comprehensive in his response that it makes you wonder if vast right-wing media conspiracy theories are beginning to take hold in another Democratic White House.

In January 1997, as described at the time by Rupert Cromwell at the UK Independent World, the Clinton administration released a hysterical 331-page report "purporting to show how allegations of White House skulduggery and scandal find their way from obscure thinktanks to the mainstream media." The conspiracy mongers believe that the think tanks "feed their fantasies through British tabloids and conservative United States papers to the New York Times and the Washington Post."

This report from January 1997 says that "The White House singled out Ambrose Evans-Pritchard of The Sunday Telegraph as a participant in what it said was a well-organised 'media food chain' of events."

Yeah, and as you recall, it worked so well during impeachment (/sarcasm).

So how long will it be before Gibbs and Company resurrect the vast right-wing conspiracy -- and throw center-right bloggers into a new variant of their paranoid mix?

Pay no attention

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. This is just getting so far fetched. Do not dare to disagree with "The One". The next story from the White House will be the official pronouncement "Obama has declared himself a God" all bow done to his beatification.

Gibbs is also following the Clinton WH example in another way:

Don't just refute what your opponents say; attack  their credibility.

Update:  A Brit strikes back.   (h/t Drudge)

Money quote:

The British press, especially the Telegraph, has been
singled out because they frequently publish articles critical of the
Obama administration and are not afraid to take on the status quo in
Washington. Increasingly, millions of Americans are turning to online
UK news websites for cutting edge reports on American politics and U.S.
foreign policy that the mainstream media refuses to cover in the
States, especially if it is unflattering to the Obama White House.

Robert Gibbs' completely unwarranted rant against the British press
is an absolute disgrace, and the President should disown his views. An
unreserved apology by Gibbs is also in order.

The UK Telegraph

Until this article, I had never been to the website, unless it was a link from Drudge. This morning, I read the story about Gibbs and enjoyed reading the comments after the story. Then I spent some time looking around their site.  Their "Foreign" section has all sorts of great stories on Obama.  It's sad that I have to go to a site in another country to get some real news about my country and the President.

I have to agree with you

The article was great but the comments were extremely enjoyable.  Glad to hear so many who agree with my assessment of the Obama administration.

I read their news daily.  On purpose.

I only link to the NYT by accident!

American newspapers

jessieH             If it comes from an American newspaper, it can't be news. Who does Gibbs think he is? If he wants to gripe about the press, stick to his own country.                                                     I think Obama will go down in history as the first black president to be impeached.

Understanding the Role of a Free Press

The job of a free press to investigate and hold accountable, those that take action and make decisions on the public's behalf.

Unfortunately, American media has chosen a more "Hollywood" approach, chosing entertainment value over information value. As CBS News has discovered (but will never admit), hiring Katie Couric was an effort to upsell entertainment value when their ratings problem centered on credibility of the information they were presenting.

At least the Brits are still attempting the job of investigation.

Red vs black

The Brits really have this newspaper thing down, and that's why they are NOT dropping like flies and bleeding money like our US newspapers.

If the newspaper has a red masthead, you know you're going to get more a sensational, racy and gossipy take.

A black masthead indicates a more serious tone.

So unlike in the US, they're honest and up front about it, and you can tell on the newsstand about what you're going to get. They don't pretend to masquerade as something they're not.

Liberal vs conservative papers are also relatively balanced compared to the US, where the overwhelming majority are liberal. We're lucky we still have the WSJ.

The most outrageous thing now though is that even the red masthead UK papers are doing better, more honest reporting than our US "flagship" papers.

Like the Pelosigate "coverage"- she waves a dismissive claw, says she has nothing else to say, and the story is DOA.

Pelosi's claw

At which point the MSM throws up their hands and say 'We've done everything we could possibly do! See, we're not bias.'

Of course, Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc., etc. are not so lucky.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

This is good news

This is good for Republicans folks. The Bamster administration is pushing back against the British press because they can't control them as they do the US old media. This signals the British press that they are being noticed over here. The insults will also encourage them to double down their efforts to report the news that the US media will not report.

I hope that NB staff will also keep an eye on the British press for instances of media bias demonstrated by the refusal of US media to cover a story that the British cover. I'd like to see greater cooperation between British media outlets with counterparts here.

Awesome discovery

I always wondered how the WSJ could be at my office door early in the morning.  It is printed nearby and not in NYC.  The London papers could print in the US and make up the deliberate news void created by the New York times.

The British press

The British press may not be any more accurate or less biased than ours, but it's a hell of a lot more fun to read and they are not afraid to ruffle anyones feathers except maybe the Queen.

They are not afraid to be skeptical especially when dealing with their political parties or blatently political issues like climate change.

It didn't take long for the

It didn't take long for the Brits to retort.

Gibbs

So sorry that an objective press is available to those of us with internet access.

You lose!

Gibbs = Excreta

The insipid douche Robert Gibbs does not speak for this American...

It's bad enough that with the exception of Fox News, Obama has managed to to co-opt the press into a servile gaggle of wretched worm-tongues. At least we take comfort in knowing that after a series of anti-British slights, the press across the Atlantic,  is not afraid of unmasking 'TheOne'.

When it comes to chronicling the latest antics of Barry 'O' Community Activist, I'd like to hope that the British tabloids continue to embarrass the U.S. press with accurate reporting
