On September 3, an Asian Times writer known only as "Spengler" described a radically different scene at Invesco Field during the final night of the Democratic Convention from that conveyed by the networks and pundits. If Spengler's take is accurate, it reveals a media elite more in the tank than even its harshest critics have imagined.
Rush Limbaugh mentioned Spengler's column during his show today (see Item 9 at the link; page will go behind Limbaugh's paid subscription wall in a week). As usual, Rush is right; it's a read-the-whole-thing item. Here's one important point Rush noted:
This guy thinks (Barack) Obama is going to lose because he has no character, he has no friends, all he has are people that he has used and stepped on as rungs of a ladder to get where he goes. He has no room for a real friendship because his angry wife, Michelle, crowds them all out.
If you think that's something, wait until you read some of Spengler's description of the atmosphere at Invesco Field on the night of Obama's Greco-Roman Oration. Rush says that what Spengler has written confirms what an unnamed friend of his relayed to him from another final-night attendee:
Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech last week seemed vastly different from the stands of this city's Invesco Stadium than it did to the 40 million who saw it on television. Melancholy hung like thick smog over the reserved seats where I sat with Democratic Party staffers. The crowd, of course, cheered mechanically at the tag lines, flourished placards, and even rose for the obligatory wave around the stadium. But its mood was sour. The air carried the acrid smell of defeat, and the crowd took shallow breaths. Even the appearance of R&B great Stevie Wonder failed to get the blood pumping.
..... Al Gore, the famously wooden former vice president, gave a more lively and convincing speech than Obama did."
On television, Obama's spectacle might have looked like The Ten Commandments, but inside the stadium it felt like Night of the Living Dead. The longer the candidate spoke, and the more money he promised to spend on alternative energy, preschool education, universal health care, and other components of the Democratic pinata, the lower the party professionals slouched into their seats.
..... The Democrats were watching the brightest and most articulate presidential candidate they have fielded since John F Kennedy snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And this was before John McCain, in a maneuver worthy of Admiral Chester Nimitz at the Battle of Midway, turned tables on the Democrats' strategy with the choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
..... Obama is the most talented and persuasive politician of his generation, the intellectual superior of all his competitors, but a fatally insecure personality. American voters are not intellectual, but they are shrewd, like animals. They can smell insecurity, and the convention stank of it. Obama's prospective defeat is entirely of its own making. No one is more surprised than Republican strategists, who were convinced just weeks ago that a weakening economy ensured a Democratic victory
Especially if you follow my suggestion and read the whole thing, ask yourself, "Didn't the media (that would include Fox) see what Spengler saw? If not, why not? And if they did, why didn't we hear about it?"

It was those styrofoam columns...
September 9, 2008 - 22:20 ET by cest moi...and the sophisticated, nuanced ones thought they were watching Greek tragedy.
Ironically, the presidential campaign is beginning to imitate Lysistrata, Aristophanes' great feminist comedy.
But what do I know - it's all Greek to me!
American voters aren't "intellectual"?
September 9, 2008 - 22:37 ET by Dr_LibertyI like some of Spengler's points, but he smacks us with a backhanded complement. "Not intellectual" as compared to what in the readership of the Asian Times?
...the geniuses running Vietnam?
...half-starved North Koreans?
...the people who invented Hello Kitty?
Speaking as a bitter clinger from the countryside, you might just be surprised at our smarts Mr. Spengler.

Social proof
September 9, 2008 - 22:45 ET by rsb1My 26 year old son has introduced me to the concept of "social proof" - essentially that the surrounding crowd significantly affects the individual's perception of an event.
The media are a clique unto themselves, and would reinforce each other's perception. They expected a great speech and perceived one and told each other as much.
The general crowd was affected by the many ticket issues prior to the event and other issues that were individually small but added together would be more depressing. The general crowd wanted vindication of the special qualities of the candidate. Instead, they perceived a human politician.
Tom, I believe the rest of the MSM did see what Spengler saw...
September 9, 2008 - 22:52 ET by R D Helm...as did the dem bigwigs in attendance.
This is why they are scrambling so hard to try and destroy Sarah Palin.
Only problem is, it won't work for them now. Sarah Palin has connected with the American people in a really huge way. The only thing the teleprompter-dependent Obama has to counter her with is Joe Biden, a dried-up, warmed-over has-been if there ever was one.
I bet we hear narry a peep from Hillary, either. Sure, she will go through the motions in her "campaigning" for Barry-O, but from what I have seen so far, her heart (or whatever it is that pumps that icy blood through her veins) clearly isn't in it.
Spengler is right. Obama's thorough shunning of Broom Hilda (Hell, the Obama camp didn't even make a show of vetting her for VP) was a fatal error for his campaign.

What I really think.
Ouch!
September 9, 2008 - 23:18 ET by Tito of Custos FideiSpengler did a psychological dress down of Barrack Obama and it was devastating.
I agree on several points, most especially the 'anger' that Michelle Obama carries. It is destructive and debilitating. The whole makeover of Mrs. Obama is nothing but smoke and mirrors.
For the sake of argument, if Obama did choose Hillary, Obama would have been living in a world of HURT. Having to work with another strong and assertive woman AND dealing with his wife.
I don't envy this poor soul that is Barrack Obama.
If Spengler's prognosis of the POTUS elections comes to fruition, Obama's career is over. Plain and simple. He can't make proper decisions, ie, Biden, and he can't keep his mouth shut, ie, Palin is a pig, to talk down to us Bible-toting & gun-clinging in-bred Jed's.
I Just Read
September 9, 2008 - 23:57 ET by theworminatorI just read the article linked to this one and it was a pretty good read but Spengler has another article linked in which he wrote about Obama's women and it makes one of the best arguments as to why Obama will lose. It pretty much details how Obama came to hate America and most probably himself. It's quite refreshing reading something other than blind Obama love in a newspaper article even or maybe especially if it's a forgien paper.
I want to thank the user
September 10, 2008 - 04:10 ET by TheCitizenI want to thank the user who made the comment immediately preceding
this comment. The article entitled “Obama’s women reveal his secret” is
brilliant. It’s one of the most insightful (in terms of depth) articles
I’ve read in recent memory. This man “Spengler” seems to be a pure objectivist, and
that has allowed him to formulate truly solid foundations upon which to base his
conclusions. I suggest everyone take the time to read it (it’s lengthy
as far as internet reading goes) and will post
a link below.

Wow, thanks
September 10, 2008 - 07:48 ET by Tom BlumerThat was absolutely devastating, and is a mandatory hard-drive saver in case the guy (God forbid) wins, or remains political viable to any degree.
Wow
September 10, 2008 - 09:59 ET by Davester65I didn't agree with everything "Spengler" said in his two articles that I read, but sometimes it's good to read an outside perspective of what is going on in our country and how others see our politics. I guess if the Obamessiah wins we'll have to hope Spengler is right that he'll destroy himself before he destroys the country. Maybe he'll take the democrats (and maybe a few country club republicans I can think of) with him. Of course if Spengler is right, the Obamessiah will lose big time. We can only hope.
Spengler is great!
September 10, 2008 - 11:32 ET by kufir77He gives a very different viewpoint on American politics. He is not a McCain fan, but his articles express the need for Judeo-Christian values. Although he writes on Asia Times, I'm guessing he's American, or atleast not Asian.
On the other hand, read most things on Asia Times with a grain of salt. They have a lot of off-the-record type info on their, but a lot of it turns out to be true.
