NPR Represents 'Undocumented' Romney Heckler As Typical 'Alienated' Latina on the Street

Mickey Kaus at the Daily Caller flagged an example of NPR “laundering” an amnesty activist named “Lucy” as just a typical Latina who represents how Romney might have difficulty with the Latino vote. It’s the same “Lucy” that heckled Mitt Romney until supporters applauded over her yelling. It’s not even the first time “Lucy” has harassed Romney.

On the May 23 All Things Considered, NPR’s David Welna interviewed an “undocumented” young woman named only “Lucy” on the sidewalk and she complained that he’s failing to support the “DREAM Act” providing amnesty for illegal immigrants who came to America as children:

DAVID WELNA: But Romney's past stands on immigration-related issues have alienated other Latinos. On the sidewalk outside the event, an undocumented college student, who gives her name only as Lucy and whose parents brought her from Peru at age 10, notes that Romney said nothing in his education speech about helping people like her achieve legal status through the DREAM Act.

LUCY: I'm a Latina. You're asking for Latinos' help. Definitely not getting it with students. You know, there are citizens that are Latino that are not going to vote for a candidate like that if he's not supporting dreams of ours.

But Education Week reported a woman named “Lucy” disrupted Romney’s speech:

Romney’s speech was interrupted by a college student from New York named Lucy, an undocumented immigrant. “Governor Romney,” she yelled, twice, before the crowd broke into applause to drown out her words. She was ushered outside and joined a small group of protesters bearing signs that read “Veto Romney, Not the DREAM Act.”

If NPR’s reporter was interested in more than embarrassing Romney, he could have thrown “Romney” and “Lucy” into a Google search and found she was Lucy Allain, who said she came from Peru at 10, and now works for an advocacy group called “United We Dream.” Alexandra Grateraux of Fox News Latino interviewed her after the heckled Romney in New York back in January:

Lucy Allain says she embodies the definition of American.

Allain, 20, has become an Internet sensation for confronting GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney -- who has vowed to veto the DREAM Act -- during a fundraiser for the former Massachusetts governor in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

“Why are you not supporting my dream?” Allain asked Romney as he was signing autographs at the Sheraton Hotel.

When Romney emphasized that he would not support anyone who “comes here illegally,” Allain fired back: “I didn’t come here illegally!”

She and her mother came in on a visa, apparently, and just stayed. She had to lie her way in to heckling Romney:

For the past four years she has been involved with “United We Dream,” a national organization that advocates for DREAMers. She is currently the nonprofit’s national coordinator.

Before the confrontation, Allain tweeted: "Mr. Romney are you ready for New York DREAMers? Oh YOU will remember this visit, that I can promise you! #YouAreGoingDown! #GetReady!"

At the fundraiser for Romney, she made it a point to find him in the hotel and protest his immigration views.

Getting close to the candidate took some creativity.

“To get in there was really hard,” Allain said.

People in the role of gatekeeper for the event stopped Allain at several points.

“People kept asking me if I supported him, and I kept saying yes so they could let me go in further until I got to him.”

Welna's story carried this headline on the website: "Romney Tries to Mend Fences With Latinos." Amnesty advocates don't want any fences.

Instead of the imposing the "Nightmare Act", instead of stalking Gov. Romney, why doesn't Lucy and the sociopaths of NPR do something positive to aid the illegal aliens?

As a conservative I have helped more than a few foreign nationals - at my own expense - to become full-fledged citizens

Why in the hell can't Lucy do the same?

Legal Latinos will support a blanket amnesty. They had to work hard for their citizenship, not all of them appreciate it being given without effort to others.

And those illegal ones aren't voting. Oh I just made myself laugh!

Most Latinos in the US were born American citizens

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 05/28/2012 - 10:16am.

The Democrats and the MSM echo chamber don't realize -- or don't want to acknolwedge -- that American citizens of Latin American heritage don't all buy into amnesty for illegals. All Puerto Ricans, for instance, are American citizens by birth; my Puerto Rican friends hold little or no empathy for Mexican or Central American illegals, and are angered by MSMers who assume that because they are "Hispanic" (a synthetic US government term), they are sympathetic toward illegals.

I know a number of 'legal immigrants' over here in Asia/Hawaii who went through the ardurous, lengthy, and overly beaurocrazed,
and expensive, process of becoming an American citizen - and I don't know any of them that take too kindly about the fact that somebody can come here 'illegally', and then become 'legal' just for being here........................and don't I hear the word 'fair' spewing from the Dems and LIbs mouths all the time??? What is so 'fair' about that???

Listen closely and you'll hear them spewing about how it isn't "fair" to send these illegals undocumented folks home because they've been here so long this is the only life and country they know. They would be strangers in their old country now, and that just wouldn't be "fair" to them.

Excuse me now while I go puke....

Legal American Latinos do not support blanket amnesty.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 05/28/2012 - 3:08pm.

I come from a whole family of legal Latinos who most definitely do not support blanket amnesty. My ancestors (Argentinian) came here and went through the process of naturalization because they WANTED to be Americans. The process introduced them to their new home, opened new opportunities for them and they prospered by following the rules and obeying the law. A blanket amnesty would be antithetical to playing by the rules we legal American Latinos believe in so stridently. It would also destroy the value of American citizenship. The Good Lord already knows that Obutthead has cheapened the meaning of American citizenship so badly that it will take decades to recover, thanks to his non-stop apology tours and his wife's reinforcement of the "ugly American" stereotype abroad.

Absolutely!

I have a friend whose family (grandmother or great-grand) came to the US from Mexico legally. And if you want to see some folks go right off the deep end about illegal immigrants, use the word "amnesty" in their earshot.

And Lucy, if all you've managed to do with the opportunities you've been given in the US is to become a professional heckler, no wonder Romney doesn't support the Dream Act.

And the Lamestream media has yet, as far as I know, not found any interest in conservative bloggers having SWAT teams called to their homes by leftist hoaxers. Tyranny by the ignorant minority.

The DREAM Act - Lucy - and, a bit of reality.

Submitted by Gary Hall on Mon, 05/28/2012 - 12:16pm.

Here's my DREAM. Lucy should have been arrested on the spot and deported. Bad enough that she's here illegally, but that she out interfering with our election process out to be a felony. Now, there is a law I'd support, and so would a strong majority of voters.

In the background, as the federal DREAM Act has not been passed yet (thought Obama has enacted parts of it), out here in CA, they did pass the DREAM Act.  As it was sitting on Gov. Brown's desk awaiting his signature, the LAT's polled statewide and found that 55% opposed it, while only 40% supported it. Well, that's not what the headline read, and a few days later, Brown signed it - without any regard to the majority view.

She can go back to her home and then she won't feel "alienated". And why should we reward law breakers with free money/tuition when our own kids do not get the benefit of getting in-state tuition if they are from a different state?

Deport her, why must America keep suffering these fools and why is it WE have to pay for other people?

If Lucy is undocumented, then I strongly recommend she leave the country, wait in line, and earn her way back in. That is the fair and right way to do it.

Maybe we should mount a letter-writing campaign to Lucy to do just that, if not to her then mail the letters to NPR. At least NPR would be hearing from typical Americans.
