Daily Kos Channels Old Europe: GOP 'Ignoramuses' Ruining U.S. Image

By Tim Graham | December 01, 2011 | 16:16

You can count on the Daily Kos to be embarrassed by how America's Republican presidential contenders have ruined the country's image in the eyes of socialist Europeans -- to be specific, the hard-left German magazine Der Spiegel and its latest diatribe against Republicans, tenderly headlined "A Club of Liars, Demagogues and Ignoramuses."

The blogger "Downeastdem" cannot believe these GOP leaders dare present themselves on the debate stage: "It's horrifying because these eight so-called, would-be candidates are eagerly ruining not only their own reputations and that of their party, the party of Lincoln lore. Worse: They're ruining the reputation of the United States."

The Kos post began:

Did you ever have a crazy relative - an Aunt Mabel from Tupelo or an Uncle Archie from Queens - who made you cringe whenever he or she would open their mouth?  When they came to visit you would live in fear that a friend or classmate would drop in and overhear some racist or inappropriate comment your relative would make, and then everyone would know the secret that your family is really crazy.  That's how I feel about the Republican Party.

The GOP debates make me cringe.  I fully expect that Mitt Romney will make some stupid remark about "American Exceptionalism", that Rick Perry or Michelle Bachman will espouse their Christo-Fascist worldview, that Herman Cain will display his total ignorance about everything, and that Newt will make a total ass of himself with his bombast.  I just wish the rest of the world wasn't watching as well, for the GOP performance this election cycle diminishes our nation in the eyes of the world.

Then it's off to Der Spiegel, where their New York-based U.S. correspondent Marc Pitzke sounds just like a Kosmonaut:

Africa is a country. In Libya, the Taliban reigns. Muslims are terrorists; most immigrants are criminal; all Occupy protesters are dirty. And women who feel sexually harassed -- well, they shouldn't make such a big deal about it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the US Republicans. Or rather, to the twisted world of what they call their presidential campaigns. For months now, they've been traipsing around the country with their traveling circus, from one debate to the next, one scandal to another, putting themselves forward for what's still the most powerful job in the world.

Downeastdem lamented, "It's bad enough that they are an embarrassment to any thinking Republican - if there are any left in the party.  But these individuals are competing for the most powerful job on the planet.  What does it say about America?" Pitzke puts on every snobbish air a European could possibly spew, that these Republicans are a squalid squadron of Kardashians:

What a nice club that is. A club of liars, cheaters, adulterers, exaggerators, hypocrites and ignoramuses. "A starting point for a chronicle of American decline," was how David Remnick, the editor of the New Yorker, described the current Republican race.

The Tea Party would take issue with that assessment. They cheer the loudest for the worst, only to see them fail, as expected, one by one. Which goes to show that this "movement," sponsored by Fox News, has never been interested in the actual business of governing or in the intelligence and intellect that requires. They are only interested in marketing themselves, for ratings and dollars.

So the US elections are a reality show after all, a pseudo-political counterpart to the Paris Hiltons, Kim Kardashians and all the "American Idol" and "X Factor" contestants littering today's TV. The cruder, the dumber, the more bizarre and outlandish -- the more lucrative. Especially for Fox News, whose viewers were recently determined by Fairleigh Dickinson University to be far less informed than people who don't watch TV news at all.

Memo to Bill O'Reilly: You should invite Pitzke in for a candid interview about how the bankrupt Eurozone could run this country so much better than these alleged greedhead Republican reality-show morons.

The blog David's Medienkritik has the number on Der Spiegel.

Let me tell you about REAL embarassment for our country

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 5:02pm.

Whilst in Costa Rica in 2009, we met a very nice Honduran lady who'd left Honduras due to the instability at that time, with the attempted coup by Manual Zelaya....wherein the Obama administration, including the SecState Hillary Clinton, was backing Zelaya's illegal attempt to stay in power.

She couldn't understand how the United States, who had been a good friend to Honduras, could support Zelaya over the laws of her country.

THAT's embarrassing.

Blonde, did she have anything

Blonde, did she have anything to say about Reagan's support of the Contras in Honduras and Costa Rica who contributed to the deaths of over 50,000 people? I'd say given our past history in Honduras, your Obama story is pretty mild.

It's good to know the American Vichy Press is in synch with their Der Spiegel counterparts. I'm sure The Guardian and Le Monde are down with the sentiment too.

Der Spiegel, der stupid

Submitted by trueconserv on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 5:07pm.

OH yes, the left has always reminded everyone else how stupid we "righties" can be. The left looks fondly over to Europe for enlightenment and continually tells us that we need to follow them.

Funny, Europe is on fire. You only need to look at Greece, Italy, Spain, etc. to find out how successful socialism is. And if that isn't good enough, well, just look at China or Cuba to see the real fruition of communism.

Yet, this President has taken an already bad economy and helped it go towards oblivion with his policies. He's actually made it worse and gloates with pride. In his view, social justice is the way of the 21st century in America.

Downeastdem doesn't want to acknowledge some liars/cheaters/adulterers = how about Ted Kennedy or Bill Clinton, eh? Oh, that's right, "I did not have sex with that woman" was just a 'right-wing' conspiracy. Tell that to Juanita Broadrick.

Bill & Hillary have 9 felon friends between the two of them by just Whitewater alone.

Attorney Genearl Eric Holder = worked for a firm that did Pro-Bono work for Detainees at GITMO.

Barack Obama = Does any liberal care that he got Michelle a job that paid over $300, 000 a year after he was Senator. While she was employed by the hospital, it was fined for not taking care of un-insured patients and sending them elsewhere? People were fired and yet, Michelle kept her job.

Cheats = Does any liberal want to know how Tony Rezko was able to sell 1/2 his property to the adjoining neighbors Barack and Michelle Obama?

Hypocrites: Pelosi = tells us she is for the working man and supports the unions while she is worth over $92 million. Her winery and other businesses employs non-union workers too.

Ignoramuses: Barney Frank - Didn't he tell us in 2003 that Fanny and Freddie were sound economically?

I'd rather have anyone of the GOP contenders instead of the 8th grade mentality liberal who claims that they know all and yet knows crap.

Why would we care about what a dead tree German liberal rag has to say? They don't like Americans, whether Democrat or Republican, so their opinions are just a waste of time.

These dumb-asses are worried

Submitted by rbosque on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 6:29pm.

These dumb-asses are worried about the U.S. image?

How about the image of those OWS debris littering our cities and then demand that we provide them a living? How about the image of an idiot of a President who's given away trillions to his benefactors, countries that hate us, and to failing "green" businesses? How about the image of a President that bows to depots while they people burn him in effigy on the streets? Or how this idiot in the WH that thinks there are 57 states and how Hawaii is in Asia? How about the image of a great country that now voluntarily ties its hands to political correctness and is now declining in power not because of external shocks, but because of the stupidity of those now running the gov't?

The are more entertaining but as poorly informed as People magazine. I also used to be amazed at how often the London "Economist" used to walk into walls. There is a mental imbalance in the European make up which makes it hard for them to recognized solutions or even outling solution spaces.
