Liberal Radio Defends Weiner; David Shuster Says Republican 'Whoring' to Big Oil Is Worse

By Tim Graham | June 11, 2011 | 06:53

Even after Anthony Weiner's quavering press conference, liberal talk radio overwhelmingly suggested Weiner should stay and Republicans are worse. (The exception seems to be Ed Schultz, who thinks he ought to go.) On Thursday's Stephanie Miller show, former MSNBC host (and soon to be Current TV backup anchor) David Shuster said Weiner isn't as newsworthy as Republicans "literally whoring themselves" on the House floor to Big Oil and Wall Street:

MILLER: So, David, this boy oh boy, this Anthony Weiner story, again you know, a great progressive fighter. We love him politically and unfortunately this is one of those it just gets worser and worser stories, doesn't it?

SHUSTER: Yeah, I think it gets bad. Look, I'm far more yeah, I'm not as concerned about Anthony Weiner and how he handles Facebook and Twitter and whatever photographs. That doesn't concern me as those lawmakers who are literally whoring themselves out on the floor of the Unites States House to the oil companies that are hurting our environment or the greedy Wall Street speculators who have ruined our economy.

Speaking of MSNBC anchors, on Wednesday night, Rachel Maddow performed the perfect liberal two-step in saying because Democrats have no sexual standards of behavior, Weiner isn't guilty of any double standards, unlike the conservative Republicans who protect opposite-sex marriage:

MADDOW: Anthony Weiner, unlike David Vitter, did not actually have physical contact with anyone outside his marriage that we know of. He did not break the law by paying a prostitution service for sex. He does not even have a political hypocrisy problem here because he never campaigned on protecting the sanctity of marriage like David Vitter did. And because of that, if David Vitter is still a member of Congress, if you have not called for David Vitter to resign, if you do not now feel moved to demand that David Vitter resign now in June 2011, how on Earth can you demand that Anthony Weiner needs to resign?

On his radio show, Bill Press consistently said Weiner should not go and Democrats should lay off. On Thursday, he said: "I think shame on the Democrats for piling on. I understand why they don't want to rush out to the microphones and publicly endorse this kind of behavior -- I'm not endorsing this kind of behavior either -- but it does pain me to see them so eager to sacrifice one of their members because the Republicans are making such a big deal about this."

On Wednesday, he insisted "We Democrats are too quick to throw our own under the bus. The idea that if we throw under Anthony Weiner under the bus, Republicans are suddenly going to all be nice nice and smile, right, and say, "Congratulations to the Democrats. They have proven they're better than us." Get out of here. C'mon. Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, the whole crowd, Sean Hannity -- they'll find something else to attack Democrats on. They always will."

Press thinks America is too uptight about sex, unlike the rest of the world: "But somebody who admitted sexting to women who were happy to sext with a member of Congress? They wouldn't spend five minutes on it. They woudn't think about it. They wouldn't think twice about it. They would just assume, well this is what -- all men are like this. But in America here, we ignore almost any other kind of irregularity. But if sex is involved, oh my God, it's the end of the world. Wouldn't you have to say that we've got our priorities ass-backwards?"

On Thursday, Randi Rhodes said Republicans were the biggest hypocrites on Earth, but the Democrats were to blame for keeping Weinergate going:

RHODES: The Republicans aren't really talking about Anthony Weiner - I - I've been surprised - but they're not because they understand they are exposed on this issue of uh sexual peccadillos and infidelity and uh running away with Brazilian lovers and being caught with a diaper on the DC Madam's list and, you know, uh, paying off your staff members to, you know, with mommy and daddy's money, and, you know -.they understand that they've got, you know, Larry Craig to deal with - they've got all these people that, you know, do all these strange things all the time screaming that they have the moral high ground and that they're the biggest hypocrites on the planet earth. So they've left the Weiner thing alone which means that it is Democrats that are constantly keeping this story alive.....

Just Another Day in the Liberal Mind

Submitted by cobokat on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 7:10am.

I guess I should not be surprised by all these liberals coming to the defense of Anthony Weiner. I think what surprises me is that this type of behavior is slowly going to become more acceptable and it makes one wonder what is becoming of the world. Yet we have reporters fighting to see what is in Sarah Palin's emails thinking they're going to find something that will bring her down. Everyday when I watch the news or read the news on-line I think to myself can it get worse-but it does. What's really scary is the people keep voting the clowns back in office like Rangel...Frank...and all the others that want to continue to take this country down. I've said it before and I'll say it again-I hope the American people will stand up and vote this current administration out of office-any candidate no matter who they are should be supported in order to make BO a one term president.

Who is "whoring" to big oil?

Submitted by Funbowhunter on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 7:49am.

When has big oil made their largest profits? When supply is artificially cut off, such as with this moratorium that Obama has placed on drilling and pumping! The only thing this is hurting is the millions upon millions of drivers in the US, and anyone who buys anything trucked.

Big Oil Obama

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 7:49am.

If I recall correctly Obama got more from BIG OIL than McLame did.

You're making a big mistake Rick

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 12:16pm.

You're confusing the issue with facts. Big oil isn't republican or democrat. They're business. Yes, they gave Obambi more than McLame because they figured Barry would help their profits more. They support any candidate that can do so. If there's no clear-cut candidate, they hedge their bets and bet on both.

The main thing I hear from republicans is drill, baby, drill. Sure, this would significantly benefit big oil. It would also benefit Americans on many levels. Lower oil prices and less US money going to countries that despise us.

You're also forgetting (and the LSM isn't mentioning) that Obummer's administration was at least partially to blame for the Deepwater Horizon explosion, AND they actually HINDERED the cleanup, all to the benefit of BP.

So, who are actually the whores here?

Don't be distracted

Submitted by hobie on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 8:04am.

The issue with Anthony Wiener was not that he sent pictures of himself.

The only issue is:

He LIED repeatedly about it on video!

LIED!

Stick to the lie! Now no one should be trusting of this guy forever.

Lies

Submitted by LarryG on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 7:33pm.

I studied a lttle law some years ago, maybe things have changed. Seems like they taught us that if a person lies about one thing, he'll likely lie about anything or everything. Besides being ugly, this Weiner fellow simply is not trustworthy.

"Don't be distracted" is right

Submitted by dreamsincolor on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 11:00pm.

Every progressive reporter has tried to spin this from the (IMO) crime, to it -now- being a reason for treatment. Oh hell, he's not responsible, he had an addiction. Horse hockys.

The issue is the LIES upon LIES. He lied to the face of every reporter that would talk to him. My guesstimate is that over a billion people now know he is a liar. How do you come back from that?

He lied about his twitter account getting hacked - How much money did his bs cost twitter and yfrog to dig through router/switch and server logs looking for a breech?. How many peripheral machines had to be re-reinspected to make sure they were not hacked? How many news agencies wasted resources chasing this down.

This was a big f'n deal, a congressman's account was hacked and he was impersonated on a worldwide network - it's a big crime, that's news- right? If committing those acts are crimes, wouldn't lying about it saying you were a victim be a crime as well? Or doesn't it count if you only lie to the people that elected you and not the FBI.

Can you sue a sitting congressman for something he said that was not in the line of duty?

If "double standards" about

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 9:28am.

If "double standards" about sexual morals is the only criteria for liberals for resignation from congress, than there's nothing Weiner could have done that would make them call for him to resign. Go ahead Weiner, do anything you want....

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"

What's wrong with the argument...

Submitted by Tomorama on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 10:30am.

Randi "you know" Rhodes is actually right here, Republicans are not talking about this (the elected ones) and the ones who are talking about this are Demonrats.

Of course ass-hat Press uses the term Republicans and only can mention the usual talk show hosts and not ONE elected Republican.

Newsflash ass-hat, talk show hosts TALK about topical issues.

Again, THE ISSUE IS HE BROUGHT THE MEDIA IN AND LIED TO EVERYONE OVER AND OVER.

Press and Tote-bag etc, etc don't get it.

Just like the 13 year old boy doesn't get it as using her rational we should just forgive Ted Kennedy for leaving a girl to DIE because he didn't run on a platform that "he wouldn't leave a girl to die at the bottom of a lake".

PLS stay Weiner, the Republicans have a "bad guy" to shove up the Demonrats fat backsides.

Tony, may I please have another?

Submitted by Hunter12 on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 11:43am.

I wonder how the water-carriers feel when the knife in their back gets twisted? Do you think Dana Bash will be making excuses for him in the future? If you're wondering why the liberal press is so adamant he should stay when the NY Governor will just replace him with another Democrat should Weiner resign, here's the answer.  They'd be smart to jerk his butt out and get someone in there who can curry a few favors before 2012, because this story is heading toward underage girls very soon.  If he did a global tweet to his followers, the girl in Delaware who is only 17 must have got it as well.

MSM Speaks to the Issues?

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 12:58pm.

First of all, they are fictionalizing the truth. And doing so only in the interests of deflecting interest away from a huge problem for the Democrats.

If they were genuine in talking about the issues, they would be bringing up the national debt, the deficit and the economy, without blaming anyone, and proposing real solutions. Instead, they spend all of their creative energy in tearing down and destroying their opponents. Just think what could be accomplished if they were a force for positive not negative endeavors.

What the hell does oil have

Submitted by rbosque on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 1:23pm.

What the hell does oil have anything to do with Weiner's appendage?

What kind of fantasy world do these liberals live in? Do these liberals ever think beyond the first thing that comes to their little minds?
If their wet-dream about no oil comes true, the whole economy would collapse! Oil runs our economy whether they like it or not. They wouldn't be able to get into their limos to criticize and lecture the rest of us about not being green...

Actually the President

Submitted by TerryWest on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 2:07pm.

Actually the President whoring himself to Big Union by far tops both Wiener and Big Oil in so far as the reality in how it negatively effects the average American life.

Not only did Tony Dick lie...........

Submitted by djwolf12 on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 8:48pm.

The media backed him up on the supposed "hacked twitter bullsh*t" story, now they are now covering for him to make themselves not look like complete dopes (which they are failing miserably). They are saying the same old, same old "there is nothing to see here, keep moving along, BUT BIG OIL AND HALLIBURTON AND BUSH IS TO BLAME FOR THIS MESS WEINER IS IN!

Sounds like a typical childlike response. A child gets in trouble for telling lies and the child tries to somehow make it okay by saying "But Mom, Johnnie said a cuss word".

Grow up Schuster. It's your idol Obama whose Whoring to Big Oil and Labor Unions. Regardless Weiner is still a liar and a pervert.

Any Congressman/woman who sets out to decieve the American people is unfit to be a United States Congressman. That means you, Pelosi. You Rangle. You, Weiner.
