Tea Party Hypocrites: New York Times Sets the Table for Democrats to Whack GOP 'Duplicity' on Spending Cuts

By Tim Graham | April 08, 2011 | 07:07

Tim Graham's picture

Jennifer Steinhauer of the New York Times offered a story Thursday on already hypocritical freshman House Republicans favoring big-picture spending cuts, but fighting for local projects. The headline was "Gung-Ho for Big Cuts in Spending, Less Fond of the Ones That Hurt Back Home." Steinhauer reported: "While scores of congressmen and women are singing an ode to spending reductions with their Republican choir in Washington, back home, the tune sometimes changes...Such inconsistencies, while hardly new to this Congress, are political chum for Democrats."

That could be the slogan for The New York Times: "All the News That Is Political Chum for Democrats."

The first star of the story is Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler of Washington state, who campaigned against the "stimulus" and voted for the $61 billion cut, but now wants to help secure a $10 million grant for the Port of Vancouver. It’s true that trillion-dollar deficits can be built out of local projects. But Steinhauer was helpfully setting up local Congressman Steve Israel from Long Island to lecture:

"You cannot vote to cut veterans’ benefits in Washington and then go pose for pictures with veterans back in the district," said Representative Steve Israel, who runs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "There is a pattern of duplicity here, and we’re going to make sure it comes back to haunt them."

Steinhauer only suggested Israel might be overstating it, but then works to prove his point:

"Pattern" may be an overstatement, but there are several examples of members’ voting for cuts that they then deplore. Representative Bobby Schilling voted against rail financing for his district in Illinois, and later said that he did so only because he knew that the Senate would not sign off on the cut.

The whole story was about Republicans seeking federal spending for local projects (with one small appearance by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire helping Republicans on one). This idea of "duplicity" can be suggested by both sides. Can we presume that the New York Times was hot on the story every time Sen. Barack Obama posed for pictures with veterans in Illinois -- after he said Iraq was a "dumb war"? Or is that not a story that can be used on The Rachel Maddow Show?

Why not just file a 14

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 8:35am.

Why not just file a 14 trillion dollar lawsuit against BOTH political parties?

BOTH PARTIES actively worked to get it to that level, and BOTH PARTIES are directly responsible for the 'debt'.

Why not just send the bill to the federal reserve board for printing the extra money out of thin air so the political parties would have money to spend?

obammer seized the assets of general motors, why don't the American CITIZENS seize the assets of all current, as well as every previous federal elected official and sell those assets to pay back the 'political parties' debt?

Personally, I'm in favor of filing "Economic TREASON" against the whole bunch.

If harry reid is the best person to lead the senate, what does that say about the other 99 senators?

BOTH PARTIES actively worked

BOTH PARTIES actively worked to get it to that level, and BOTH PARTIES are directly responsible for the 'debt'.

Not even closely to being equal in responsibility for this mess, however. The GOP spent like drunken sailors, while the Dems have spent like a 1,000 drunken sailors.

Personally, I'm in favor of filing "Economic TREASON" against the whole bunch. I'

I'm more in favor of getting enough people to support what needs to be done. The dirty little secret is, if we had enough economic conservatives out there, this debacle in Washington would never have happened. Any politician supporting reckless spending would have been booted out of office every November when they strayed years ago. That we didn't means "we" (not true conservatives, obviously) are just as guilty, if not more so, than our representatives.

What happens?

Submitted by Agnostic on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 9:46am.

What happens when "Representatives" represent political interest and not constituencies?  Blame the voters for being lazy but the media and the politicians have been lying to them and most people are too busy with their own lives (or the latest episode of DWTS) to look far beyond the lies - hence the fact of a very low trust level in government even by those who rely on the government for everything.

With all due respect, I'm not buying this. The truth has been out there at least since I was a kid during the Seventies. As for being busy, unless you're working 20 hours a day, there's no excuse for anybody not to be reasonably knowledgeable about what's going on. Even before Rush, Fox News and Drudge, there were still places where you get a non-liberal take on current events, economics and politics. Of course, it's easier to blame the people we* keep voting for instead of ourselves, I guess.

* Again, I'm not talking about the vast majority of people here.

I blame both parties equally

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 10:24am.

I blame both parties equally for the simple reason that neither party much gives a damn what the PEOPLE want, or NEED from 'their representative'.

Another Reagan quote that now applies to both parties was "I didn't leave the democrat party, the democrat party left me."

Currently the 'republican' party is left of Kruschev.

Here in Mesa County Colorado, we had the elitists that control the local' republican party' create a "conservative group' that tried desperately to become known as the local "Tea Party" group.  gave themselves a great sounding name Western Slope Conservative Alliance, appointed themselves as the "board of directors", and adopted by-laws.

The FIRST order of business was to amend the bylaws to remove the RIGHT TO VOTE ON ANY ISSUE OR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS from the membership.

This group actively worked against the Conservative candidates in favor of the party anointed candidates. And Statewide, the 'republican' party supported the 3rd party candidate because the person CHOSEN BY THE VOTERS was not the party choice.(damned stupid voters anyway!)

Can't have them pesky Citizens actually having a say in what is done in their name.

Seldom does the local democrat part field a candidate for any public office because they don't want to risk losing the 'republican' already in office.

I'm betting that the same issue is in every district across the nation with a very few exceptions.

oh, as a final note, two of the 'leaders' of the WSCA currently work for the candidate of THEIR CHOICE in DC, the 'honorable' scott tipton. Their promise of future employment was never made known before the election.... how odd.

Another Reagan quote that now

Submitted by Newsbusterbrown on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 11:08am.

Another Reagan quote that now applies to both parties was "I didn't leave the democrat party, the democrat party left me."

FWIW, Reagan's views clearly changed over the years. While the Democratic party did become more liberal by the Sixties, Reagan still left the party (thankfully!) because he had changed.

Currently the 'republican' party is left of Kruschev.

Come on now. That's a ridiculous and patently absurd statement.

This group actively worked against the Conservative candidates in favor of the party anointed candidates. And Statewide, the 'republican' party supported the 3rd party candidate because the person CHOSEN BY THE VOTERS was not the party choice.(damned stupid voters anyway!)

Um, who votes for the GOP leaders? It's not like they took over their respective county and state seats by a coup. IOW, more conservatives need to take over the Republican Party by getting rid of these fools and inserting Tea Party types in their place, don't you think?

I wholeheartedly agree that

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 5:08pm.

I wholeheartedly agree that we NEED more Tea Party types to get out and work to save our country.

If you have the magic words to get them off their duffs and out into the precincts and voting, I sure wish you would pass it on.

As to how far left the 'republicans' have moved, just look at their part in the national debt, and the destruction to the Bill of Rights by the UNpatriot act, as well as the shredding of the Constitution by both parties.

The 'republican' party is equally to blame because they sat by and allowed it..

If Kruschev could have accomplished the destruction to our country, he would have died a very happy man.

While both parties have spent

Submitted by bassndude on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 9:26am.

While both parties have spent to much, there is one simple solution to bring back the country to solvency. Repeal Obama care. Get rid of Obama care and the debt problem is over half solved. And that is strictly a Democrat bill.

"Why not just file a 14 trillion dollar lawsuit against BOTH political parties?"

When you sue the Government, guess who pays for it?  That's right, the Taxpayers. Do you REALLY want to add an additional 14 trillion dollar burden to the American taxpayer?

I said sue the parties. Who

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 5:11pm.

I said sue the parties.

Who brought suing the government into this?

I'm also in favor of treating all the past 'elected' representatives and senators the same way they treated the share holders of GM and Chrysler when olbammer nationalized the corporations and gave everything to the UAW.

Well at least the NYT is doing half a job

Submitted by c5then on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 8:42am.

Sure there are going to be hypocrites elected from any batch of politicians. But I'd be willing to bet that this new batch that came in in 2010 have a lower percentage than any of the others over the last couple of decades.

By all means lets find them and then replace them with someone else next time. The root of the problem is that "politician" is a career choice now instead of an insult and for an entire generation it has been the standard practice that the Federal budget is there to grab as much as possible from for "your district" as it it was free money.

I think that the Tea Parties are slowly changing that mindset. We didn't get into this mess in one election cycle and it's going to take many more to get us out of it.

Regarding the impending

Submitted by jdhawk on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 11:17am.

Regarding the impending "shutdown" of government, what duhbama is really saying (while he and his family go on vacation):

"Pay the ransom (allow us to continue massive government spending) or we stop paying the military!"

"Pay the ransom (allow us to continue massive government spending) or we won't mail you your IRS refund check!"

"Pay the ransom (allow us to continue massive government spending) or we will ruin the tourists' vacations who are going to DC for the Cherry Blossom Festival!"

"Pay the ransom (allow us to continue massive government spending) or we will close the National Parks and ruin family vacations!"
