Ed Schultz Mangles Ratings Math Again, Complains About Being Bumped for 'Prison Junk' on MSNBC

By Tim Graham | February 15, 2011 | 09:25

Ed Schultz is not completely happy with his new 10 pm Eastern time slot. On his radio show Friday, he said to his Ed-heads: "Where is Ed Friday night? Well they’ve always run the prison junk on Friday night. You, you wouldn’t -- I’m telling you straight, that beats Fox News. Okay, that Lockup and that Jerry Behind Bars, or I don’t know, all that stuff. There is amazing amazing intrigue with prisons."

As usual, when Ed talks about ratings and Fox, he's not exactly right. The Friday night numbers from TV Newser shows that MSNBC's Lockup beat FNC's On the Record among viewers 25 to 54, by 329,000 to 239,000. But among overall viewers, Fox crushed MSNBC: Greta van Susteren drew 1.34 million, while Lockup only had 586,000 viewers.

Elsewhere on the radio dial, Bill Press said on Friday that there is not one "serious contender" in the Republican field of hopefuls against Barack Obama. Press also cited the Tufts study that found almost all talk radio programs contain an "outrageous incident," but as usual for the author of "Toxic Talk," he asserted the right wing was far worse: "It happens once in a while to any of us in the business, but it's not the constant screed of, the constant Niagara [Falls] of ugliness that you hear from Michael Savage or Mark Levin or Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity or any of the rest of them."

Press's radio show isn't doing so well. On his website, he's urging listeners to keep him from being dropped from the radio in Madison, Wisconsin, a very liberal town. Press's latest column praises the "confession app" for Catholics, but insists the church is still behind the times for feminists:

As a Catholic, and a former altar boy and seminarian, I must say it makes me proud to see the Catholic Church be the first to embrace the iPhone. But what still puzzles me is: How can the same church be so forward-thinking in one area — and yet so backward when it comes to celibacy and the ordination of women priests? If only the Catholic Church were as open about sexuality as it is about technology.

Press has been plugging this line for a while.

How does the MSNBC audience tell the difference . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 9:46am.

. . . between convicted felons jabbering on the prison shows and the talking heads on the Mon-Thurs line-up?

And if more viewers in the 25-54 age demographic were home watching a prison program on MSNBC than watching Fox News, doesn't that say something about MSNBC's audience.  I mean, how many folks cap off a week of hard work by watching a prison program on Friday night?  Not my idea of having fun.

What does it say about Ed, Lawrence, Rachel and the rest when endless repeats of years old prison shows get better ratings than their shows do? Further, what does it say about the oblivious nature of them when they tout this reality themselves?

Management 101 & Customer Relations

Submitted by Boil It Down on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 11:14am.

Never allow your employees to air their grievances to the customer. The customer is there for your goods and services, not to be aggravated by an inconsiderate, self centered employee. The employee's personal life is of no concern to your customer. If an employee has been counselled against such behavior and commits another infraction, the only course of action is to remove them from contact with customers.

It's basic, common sense management, and yet MSNBC allows Schultz to continue. Ed Schultz has got to be the biggest cry baby on TV.

Wisconsin's "war on the middle class"

Submitted by ThisnThat on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 9:55am.

Did anyone enjoy Ed's 10:00pm show last night? He's railing against efforts by Wisconsin's Gov to scale back public employee benefits. Of course, Ed's discussion was all one-sided. I was sitting there as he interviewed a husband-wife pair of school teachers, each making $51K/year. He asked them what impact the Gov's changes would have on their life. Their answer: "Well, we might not be able to take a vacation this summer".

Ok, ok, I thought. Maybe the Gov's wrong, I thought. Geez, making these people kick in for their pension and health care -- like I do -- is just totally wrong. The fact that I haven't had a vacation for years, and the fact that I have to fund my retirement and pay health insurance premiums and co-pays shouldn't be forced on these public service employees, I thought.

Maybe I'm too selfish. Heck, why should these teachers be forced to adjust their lifestyle one little bit. Go ahead -- take more of my taxes so I can pay for their summer vacation -- and health insurance, and fully funded pension for life. I can afford it -- if I cut back a little here, lower my expectations a little there, work a few years longer, keep from getting laid off if my company doesn't do too well, pay for obamacare premium increases, ... Yeah, I just crunched the numbers, and if I can just keep the car running for a few more years, these public employee union members will be able to take their summer vacation as planned. Whew! Now maybe Ed will cut us a little slack, eh -- maybe interview me -- a conservative -- without calling me names, and declaring how evil I am?

Don't teachers get the summer

Submitted by tvhall on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 10:19am.

No we are only paid at the end of each month we work.  There is a gap in the summer.

Besides if you met the little SHITS (yeah, I said it) we deal with (results of parental incompetence and schools being bound by PC) you'd understand why we need the summer off!

Only 14 years in and I am burnt out.  Thank God I started at 45 and can retire at the end of next year.  It was a nice change from Aerospace at first but each year the kids more closely approach spore of Satan.

If you have a degree come and try it for a year!

tvhall, no one is begrudging teachers the summer off, and we do appreciate what a lot of you have to put up with.

But when your pay comes out of the pockets of others and they have no choice and no say in how much, sometimes to the detriment of their own families (see my reply to TnT) you can understand why they get angry and want a little restraint.

BS tvhall,

There is only a gap in the summertime if you CHOOSE to have one. Teachers paycheck can be spread across the entire year or paid out during the school year.  Try again.

P.S. I have learned far more from folks who don't have a degree than I have from those who do. That right there is one example of why schools teachers are held in low esteem. Degree elitism is as objectionable as the PC. Wait, it is part of it !

Actually that depends upon each individual school district or state. Some places, like the place where I taught way back when, had that choice as you stated but other places the choice isn't available. There are places where teachers are only paid for the months they work. Overall it's the same salary for the year but thhe monthly amount varies depending upon whether they are paid over 12 months or over 8-9 months.

Ed's misplaced outrage

Submitted by ThisnThat on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 10:20am.

Yeah, Ed was outraged that if benefit changes were made to Union employees, they would be impacted.

Yet he has no problem with the fact that if no benefit changes are made to union employees, the public will be impacted.

Just as long as Unions are protected, then that's good. And so his whole show was all about interviewing Union employees, Union officials, and Union supporters.

Catholic Church...

Submitted by adamsmith on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 10:00am.

I love Bill Press' comments on the Catholic Church..The Church IS open about sexuality. It's just fine between a married man and woman. No women being ordained? The Church doesn't follow the latest social engineering. In the eyes of the Vatican, it was no mistake that all twelve Apostles were men. Tell me Bill, was Jesus wrong? Was he behind the times? Not Liberal enough for you? Celibacy? Maybe you didn't read this in your study for the Seminary, but Christ wanted everyone to be celibate. Saint Paul lightened this up knowing most people would never follow a belief involving that much sacrifice. The Church had married priests for the first six hundred years. It decided on celibacy after many Bishops had their sons become heirs of the Parishes, setting up mini fiefdoms that brought the celibacy hammer down. No wonder the idiot has no listeners, he doesn't know enough to make him listenable....

Don't agree with the Vatican? Simple. Renounce your Catholicism and move on......

Well, no, Jesus wasn't behind the times, that's just the way things were back then.  But now women are "equal" so they should get to be priests.

And society's attitude about divorce, and premarital sex, and birth control, and so many other things has changed, and the Catholic Church has to get with the program   That's probably why they're losing members in droves

Getting with the program...

Submitted by adamsmith on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 10:41am.

In the Catholic Church THEY ARE the program. People have been predicting the demise of the Church and working toward it since Constantine. It's still there. As far as getting with the program, it's amazing how many Catholics are now opting to go to Latin Masses. People want stability, and the Church is the ultimate Conservative organization. They like God are unchangeable...

And I disagree Men and Women are equal. Men can't do many things women do exceptionally well and vice versa. That's why God made man and woman. They are unequal and need each other to compliment each other in life. Our society has been playing a catch up game of emasculating men. I don't think society is better for it. Hillary said "It takes a village to raise a child". I say BS. It takes a father in a stable home....My two cents....

If Press wants to go after

Submitted by ThisnThat on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 10:11am.

If Press wants to go after religion and its "sexism", he should start with Islam. Here are some differences between Catholics and Muslims:

  1. Catholic women: Includes nuns. Who can teach. Islam: Nuns would be beaten for teaching.
  2. Catholic women: Supports schools, including girl students. Islam: Girl students would be removed, and the schools burned down as a lesson.
  3. Catholic women: Can drive to the store to shop if they want. Islam : Banned from driving.
  4. Catholic women: Can be elected to Government at all levels: Islam: Banned from government.
  5. Catholic women: Can be seen in public. Alone. With other men. in groups of women. Islam: Will be punished if seen alone without their husbands.
  6. Catholic women: Can be found in pews, sitting there with their families. Islam: Banned from attending worship with men.
  7. Catholic women : Can be found enjoying a day at the beach, or at a swimming pool. Islam: Will be punished if found swimming with men.
  8. Catholic women : Can go on a date on Valentine's day. Islam: Valentine's day is banned.

It's a great opportunity for liberals everywhere to note the differences. Will they?

Reason their ratings suck

Submitted by tvhall on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 10:07am.

Their values.  They support abortion, the nanny state (socialism) and the triumph of the Islam domination of the earth.  Not to mention sexual immorality and the destruction of big business that employs them and delivers their groceries to their restaurant table.  Americans, even if they support sustainable economy recognize that these fools do not have sustainable values. Thus why would any rational person watch them?

I work in education and a table in the teacher’s lunch room is always talking about the evil right, the accursed military, lying Fox News, traitors Limbaugh, Beck, Hannidy... and how cool all of the MSNBC shows were last night.

It’s ok, these people are indoctrinating your children!
