WaPo Celebrates 'Uncommon Forcefulness' of Anti-Tea Party Protest, Submerges Anti-Thomas Hate Speech

While conservatives were shocked at a video showing liberals at a Common Cause rally suggesting Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas should have his toes cut off one by one, be lynched alongside his wife, or be put "back in the fields," The Washington Post seems to find mostly a burst of liberal pride. On Thursday's Fed Page on A-17, reporter Dan Eggen's story is headlined "Uncommon forcefulness from Common Cause."  The Thomas remarks don't surface until  the end, in paragraph 17. The story begins with a smile, for the nerds have gotten rowdy:

Common Cause has long been something of a nerd among the jocks. While other activists staged loud demonstrations and nervy stunts, the 40-year-old good-government group was more likely to hold a forum on filibuster reform or the vagaries of redistricting.

But suddenly Common Cause is manning the barricades, leading a rowdy campaign by liberal groups decrying the outsized role of big money in U.S. politics.

At least Eggen is using the L-word, adding "Liberal activists led by Common Cause staged noisy protests last motn outside a private political gathering held by the [Koch] brothers in Rancho Mirage, California." Conservative critics surface in paragraph 8, with Tim Phillips of Americans for Prosperity objecting to pre-printed liberal signs saying "Koch Kills." Perhaps Eggen deserves a point for that, too, since the AP story from January 30 on the Post website excluded that one (and the Thomas remarks):

Protesters carried signs reading "Troops Home Now," "Medicare for All" and "Tea Party Founded and Funded By The Kochs."

Several dozen people dressed in hazardous materials suits and held police tape and a banner that read "Quarantine the Kochs."

Eggen characterized the hate speech as an "embarrassing distraction." But when someone (like Lyndon LaRouchies) carried Obama-as-Hitler signs, reporters considered it emblematic of the whole movement, not a distraction:

The protest resulted in about two dozen arrests. In addition, conservative activists released a video showing two unidentified white demonstrators at the event saying that Thomas, who is black, should be lynched or put "back in the fields."

The incident was an embarrassing distraction for Common Cause, which said in a statement that it was "outraged" by the racist remarks.

"We condemn bigotry and hate speech in every form, even when it comes from those who fancy themselves as our friends," Edgar said, adding that the group will continue to stage forums and other events focused on Koch Industries' role in U.S. politics.

The oddest part of the conservative video is watching Van Jones saying "I don't care how viciously any of us are targeted by the politics of hatred, I am never going to surrender the politics of hope,"  and then seeing so much hatred from the protesters.

And the denial continues.

The NAACP, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton show their true colors over this Thomas story with their willing silence. Just imagine if these things had been said about Obama.....

I wonder what would happen if

Submitted by StillRight on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 11:44am.

I wonder what would happen if someone on the net could float a hoax on the net that this incident happened at a Tea Party rally and it was said of Obama. Would the NYT et al bite and print it as fact?

Right as allways, never left.

Hey Common Cause - I gotta cause for ya...

Submitted by acaiguana on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 9:49am.

AS noted in the story here:

"But suddenly Common Cause is manning the barricades, leading a rowdy campaign by liberal groups decrying the outsized role of big money in U.S. politics."

Oh really?

How about getting behind the myriad groups (including the House Republicans) decrying the outsized role of Government in people's lives?

How's that grab ya Spanky?

Of course, the "big money in

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 10:11am.

Of course, the "big money in politics" doesn't mean the $1 billion that Obama plans to spend on his re-election campaign...or the millions that the labor unions will spend on his behalf....

They just don't want any  evil corporations "interfering with elections" as they like to call it.

Yes, we only want the millions given to Obama by unknowns

Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 12:47pm.

The Obama campaign will once again ramp up the "unknown" small donors like they did the last time. Those pre-paid credit cards got a lot of use in 2008.

It's racist and bigoted.

Submitted by c5then on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 10:26am.

This illustrates the utter hypocrisy of the left. If similar remarks had been made by a conservative, the howling and tearing of clothes by the MSM would be epic and unending for days or weeks.

It Only Shows Thier True Nature

Submitted by richb313 on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 10:27am.

Do not get too upset by the antics of our liberal bretheren, It only shows thier true nature. I have found through life that which upsets me the most in others is the very same things that I do not like about myself. I have also found this to be true of other individuals and groups. We now see what upsets liberals about themselves, almost everything.

So Why Target Thomas?

Submitted by Ashrak on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 10:56am.

The progressive left, especially Democrats, oppose Justice Thomas so much because he actually understands the Constitution - most especially the 14th Amendment.  What he wrote as a partial concurrence in the McDonald decision scares the crap out of the Democrats.

The recusal being called for, the attacks upon him trying to make that happen have little to do with his wife's Tea Party activity. They fear that Thomas will build upon the Privileges or Immunities portion of the 14th, right alongside an equal protection augmentation, in a majority opinion or a concurrence like the one he authored in McDonald. Expect more attacks on Thomas, for they fear he might just be able to break it all wide open. In fact, this is where all the opposition to him has been rooted all along.

What Democrats fear more than anything is Reconstruction finally being completed. For when that happens, the race card is officially dead and the Constitution will again reign once again over their Unconstitutional Anti-Republic ways.  Keeping things tied up in court has long been their mainstay. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the Second Amendment arena, though capital punishment is a good example too.  On that note, here is one of those cartoon videos I put together about how that is being employed here in Illinois.

Why Target Thomas?

Submitted by Agnostic on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 11:06am.

He is viewed as the most vulnerable and/or likely to step down.  The left needs only one more position on the bench and they will rule and they are starting to believe they only have two more years to get that position or they will have to hope that the next Republican will appoint a 'centrist' that will end up judiciating from the left.  There best bet is to keep the pressure on Thomas and hope they can cause him to get fed up and retire or give in to "popular opinion" as pushed by the media.

Forcefullness

Submitted by octavioj on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 1:02pm.

Did I miss something in the reporting? What was said is that hundreds of people protested the Koch's get together. Is tha forceful? The Tea Parties gathered thousands all around the country and did not get the same sort of respect. Why is that? And the insults against justice Thomas are just disgraceful. He dared to leave the plantation and now must be punished for it in their minds.
