Ed Schultz Thanks Audience for 'Record' Ratings -- If You Ignore Being Crushed by Fox News

On his Wednesday radio show, Ed Schultz boasted to his listeners about his MSNBC ratings:  “We had a record number of people watching on Monday night – 872,000 people. I have to start the program by saying thank you.”

“Record” by what measure? Certainly, not by comparison with Fox: TV By The Numbers has Special Report with Bret Baier drawing more than 2.1 million people (and Schultz with 858,000). Schultz played the Man-From-Fargo card, claiming his ratings “record” wasn’t appreciated by the media blogs:

The slick websites like Huffington Post and uh, Mediaite and TVNewser, I'm not their guy. You don't see any of my stuff on any of their websites, or they're never going to mention what I do. I'm from Fargo, I'm not from New York City. I only work here because the studio's here and I bring a different voice to MSNBC, and it’s one that I think is needed.

Again, the “slick websites” should do a story – headlined “Bret Baier crushed Ed again”? Schultz then claimed he was beating cable shows up and down the prime-time lineup:

And I appreciate all of the support that all of you have given us on this radio show and on the TV show. But to have a record audience, which of course beat every hour of CNN in prime time. You could put our show at six o'clock on MSNBC up against John King, we smoke 'em. Larry King, we smoke 'em. Anderson Cooper, we smoke 'em. Over on Headline News, Joy Behar, we smoke her. Who's the other one? Miss Tennis Shoes, what's her name, Nancy Grace? We smoke her too. I mean, we beat 'em all!

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Schultz's hot story on Monday was the MoveOn lobbyist that stuck a poster in Rand Paul's face and was stomped on. Schultz is right that he beat all these other shows in the cumulative ratings: John King at 7, Larry King at 8, Anderson Cooper at 10 on CNN, and Nancy Grace at 8 and Joy Behar at 9 on HLN. But the TVNewser blog’s “Scoreboard” probably bothered him, because in viewers aged 25-54, the most prized demographic, Schultz was not on top of some of these shows he "smoked": his 188,000 viewers in the key demo lost to Grace at 8 (198,000), Cooper at 10 (198,000), and he even lost his own timeslot to Wolf Blitzer at 6 (226,000). TV Newser spotlights the key demo, but had the Total Viewers as well if you clicked on "Read more."

Of course, Schultz's "record" number never beat any evening hour on Fox from 5 pm through midnight, including the Hannity midnight rerun (1 million).

It you add up the viewers for

Submitted by ricklail on Fri, 10/29/2010 - 1:23pm.

It you add up the viewers for CNN, HLN and MESSNBC for that time slot it still doesn't egual Bret's. As a matter of fact if you add all three of those they don't equal Fox's viewers for the entire afternoon and evening. Primetime, 8-11, is the time networks can charge top dollar for adds. Whoever is advertising on CNN, HLN and MESSNBC are not getting their money's worth.

If nUTs can get within 20 of SC will that be another moral victory?

I can't imagine even Tingles or Olerdouche not rolling their eyes when it comes to this fatty redhead. I watch the first 10 minutes of his show if I can just to see how ridiculous he will be. Do you agree with me Progressives love little puppy dogs and Conservatives was to crush little puppy dogs with their spiked heels? Call me now and text 1 for yes and 2 for no!

Submitted by adamsmith on Fri, 10/29/2010 - 3:55pm.

I pretty much watch the first 10 minutes of this train wreck as well. I'm 46 and force my 75 year old mother(she would shoot him on sight) to watch ten minutes or so. We have a game where we try to see how many lies and truth twists Erroneous Ed can fit in that 10 minutes. My mother then usually asks, "What is wrong with this guy?" "Just another Progressive Communist Union backer, mom, just another Moonbat."

Olbergoebbels is on too late for her, thank God. She'd shoot him too. Including a double tap just to make sure.....

I predicted this - lousy

Submitted by Van Halen on Fri, 10/29/2010 - 12:55pm.

I predicted this - lousy ratings, then an uptick in viewers as election time hits, then watch the bottom drop out in about a week, then comes someone, not sure who yet, losing their show over at MSNBC, maybe a couple others like CNN too.

I have been trying to

Submitted by ricklail on Fri, 10/29/2010 - 3:53pm.

I have been trying to decipher the ratings. If I understand it right those figures are for the 25-54 age group. That is the group that most adverstisers want to target. Looks like the only thing keeping MESSNBC afloat is all the prison shows on the weekend. Since I work in a prison I could care less about watching that stuff. I know what goes on behind the chain link fences. The other NBC channels like USA, Bravo, SyFy and Telemundo are carrying MESSNBC.

From the desk of George Soros

Dear Ed,

On behalf of Arianna, NPR, and myself,  congratulations on this milestone.  So sorry we were late in recognizing your achievement.  We are in the midst of adding hundreds of investigators to our news outlets and, frankly, overlooked your important contribution to our cause.

With your continued efforts and with the addition of these journalist, we will be able to bring more and more truth to our public and, in doing so, help our President finish his dismantling of this corrupt country to one more in line with world values and socialist doctrine.

Keep up the good work for a better America,

George Soros

WC Fields

Submitted by okiehawk44 on Fri, 10/29/2010 - 2:59pm.

I recall a bit by WC where he's in a bar bragging about a beat down on someone in there when this little guy pipes up with "You hit him ? -- I wuz the one who knocked him down" at which WC says "Yeah, but I kicked him." Always reminds me of Eddie.

Schulz is just a big blustering bully type without anything truthful to say -- of course on MSNBC, CNN and HLN ratings don't count anyway or most of their shows would be cancelled stat.
