Katie Couric bubbled over with delight in her 14 Twitter tweets on the state dinner (half of them pictures, like this one with White House spokesman Robert Gibbs). None of them addressed whether accepting an invitation to a state dinner might hurt your appearance of independence (or whether she has one of those when it comes to the Obamas):
My recap of state dinner: Lots of saris, beautiful orchids, Mrs. O looked amazing! Seemed 2 ft taller than wife of India PM.
Prez looked tired from China, tablecloths were deep celadon, lots of dresses in sea foam green for whatever reason…
Jennifer Hudson was spectacular…she sang somewhere – wish I could sing like her, she’s sick!
They had Indian dancers and the AR Rahman (composer, musician) sang Jai Ho from Slumdog millionaire, which he wrote
Kurt Elling from Chicago…NSO performed…my favorite number was the theme from Candide from the national symphony orchestra (bernstein)
Strangely, a little Googling suggests no other press account of the state dinner reported the overture from Candide was played. The latest tweet came over the party-crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi, who met Katie and took pictures:
Met and chatted w state dinner crashers who were incredibly friendly and seemed so comfortable... Shld they be charged? what do u think?

The more I think about this
Sat, 11/28/2009 - 12:00 ET by Tom PaineThe more I think about this whole episode, the more I am struck by the fact that we no longer have politicians, entertainers or news reporters who act like grown ups. How can you gush like a teenager and then expect to be taken seriously as a journalist? Obama fist bumps and uses street jargon in an attempt to connect with young people. I am old enough to remember when John Kennedy was president. Kennedy also connected with young people, but he didn't do it by using the jargon and mannerisms of the beatnicks. Kennedy acted like an adult and we respected him as a result. I am more than a little tired of hearing all of these public figures behaving like a neighbor talking to us over the fence.
Very good point

Tom, yes, there is a level
Sat, 11/28/2009 - 12:20 ET by celatorTom, yes, there is a level of post adolescent immaturity displayed in all these characters you mentioned that we see all too often.
I read a recent study which found that adolescent bevavior has often now extended to the 25-35 year old cohert (not for all, of course) as a result of many factors. So we see a lot of this "I know everything there is to know" arrogance combined with childish utterances (texting language), a so-very-self-satisfied attitude, silly clothing styles, a blindness toward approriate behavior and a complete lack of personal insight.
It's part of the "aging down" phenomenon which Obama, Couric et al demonstrate in abundance.
No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.
I couldn't agree more.
Sat, 11/28/2009 - 13:12 ET by DutchI couldn't agree more. During the campaign, a dear friend, my age (early thirties) who was also an Obama supporter (guy admits to considering himself a socialist, btw. Also has a degree in jornalism) commented on how cool he thought it was when Obama gave Michelle a fist bump. I caught him a little off-guard when I responded:
"Really? You think it's cool when people in their late forties give fist bumps? Would you think it was cool if you saw your parents doing it?"
He admitted he would not think it was cool to see his parents do it, but in fact would be pretty lame. I may find a lot of the cultural trends among young people to be dumb, but I find them to be even dumber when engaged by people who are not young. 52-year-old Katie Couric referring to somebody's abilities as "sick"? Leave it to those thirty years behind you, Katie. "She's incredible" means the same thing, and doesn't make you look half as lame.
What do you read?

I can see Cronkite signing off: "And yo that the way it be! Peace out!".
The anchor of CBS Evening News is an immature little girl. She probably wants to arrange a pajama party with Michelle so they can watch Twilight, eat popcorn and talk about boys!
Thanks, Mr. Mike

Personally I don't care if America is transfixed at the image of Michelle Obama. Don't really care that Katie Couric has turned fashion critic.
It's Barack Obama who got elected, and there's more than enough corruption within him and his appointees to bring down this country.
And I don't see anybody coming down the mountain with a set of engraved tablets.
America voted 52 - 48 to accept the curse of Jeremiah Wright.

Sat, 11/28/2009 - 21:31 ET by NotFondOfLibsHas cbs ever figured out that katie couric has no audience with Republicans? Maybe that explains why her ratings are so low, but then again, maybe cbs doesn't care, as long as she preaches to the choir.

There is not way they sell enough ads to pay her salary and all the reporters and producers of the news. By the way their morning ratings are in the tank too. It has to be sports that are keeping them afloat.
