NBC Takes Up Kennedy vs. The Bishop, Implies Church is 'Crossing the Line' Into 'Political Blackmail'

Monday’s NBC Nightly News took up the story of liberal Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s public feud with the Catholic Church, and NBC’s Ron Allen implied something improper in how "the Catholic Church is flexing its religious and political muscle."

When Catholic officials endorse liberal initiatives like immigration reform or oppose an execution, the networks don’t worry about the separation of church and state. But with traditional stands against abortion and gay marriage in the crossfire, NBC’s screen graphic asked if the church was "Crossing the Line?" A secular-left lobbyist accused the church of being "not above spiritual and political blackmail."

NBC even used footage from Nicholas Ballasy’s video interview with Kennedy for Cybercast News Service, a news outlet affiliated with the MRC. But the brief snippet took out some of Kennedy’s hostility against the church for "fanning the flames of dissent and discord" over the "absolute red herring" of abortion. Here’s how NBC portrayed it:

ALLEN: Last month, Kennedy had publicly chastised the Church for demanding tough abortion restrictions in the health care reform bill. Today he could not be reached for comment but recently spoke to Cybercast News Service.

PATRICK KENNEDY (D-RI): If the Church is pro-life, then they ought to be for health care reform because it's going to provide health care that are gonna keep people alive.

A larger clip of the interview with CNSNews.com (posted on October 22) offers more of a taste of Kennedy’s hostility:

"I can’t understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time, where the very dignity of the human person is being respected by the fact that we’re caring and giving health care to the human person – that right now we have 50 million people who are uninsured. You mean to tell me the Catholic Church is going to be denying those people life-saving health care? I thought they were pro-life.

If the church is pro-life, then they ought to be for health care reform because it’s going to provide health care that are going to keep people alive. So this is an absolute red herring and I don’t think that it does anything but to fan the flames of dissent and discord and I don’t think it’s productive at all."

NBC must have thought it would look less positive to have a liberal complaining about "fanning the flames of dissent" during the Obama era. Allen doesn’t consider that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops didn’t oppose health "reform" in general, but favored the Stupak amendment to insure that abortions are not government-funded. It's a little overstated for NBC to call this a "tough abortion restriction." Kennedy voted against the amendment. Abortions do not qualify as "health care that is gonna keep people alive."

Allen also turned to secular leftist Barry Lynn of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, who painted a gaudy picture of Catholic bishops shredding the First Amendment and ruling America with an iron fist:

ALLEN: Critics say the Catholic Church – which, like all religious institutions, is tax exempt and not for profit – has rarely been this aggressive politically.

BARRY LYNN: I think the Church sees this as a golden opportunity to turn Church doctrine into the law of the United States at every level, and, frankly, they're not above using spiritual and political blackmail to do it.

Allen added to the "blackmail" theme:

In Washington, D.C., where the city council could approve a same-sex marriage bill next week, Church leaders warn the law would force them to end decades of programs it runs with the city helping the needy. That’s because the law would require groups like Catholic Charities – which accept public funding – to provide full employee benefits to same-sex couples, something the Church refuses to do. Church leaders say they are morally obligated to take strong stands on policy issues.

Typically, the NBC story downplayed how it could have been portrayed as liberal public officials lecturing the church to get in line with the state, whether it’s the D.C. Council telling the church to accept gay partners or Congressman Kennedy insisting the church should endorse health reform, complete with state-subsidized abortions. It could just as easily be called "political blackmail" in the opposite direction.

Thomas Tobin, the Bishop of Providence, spoke twice in the story. He said after the D.C. discussion that "We have the right and the duty, I think, to bring a spiritual vision and spiritual values into these discussions."

The other came in a very defensive way: "Keep in mind, I didn't go after him. He started this dialogue when he attacked the Church now nearly a month ago. To receive a sacrament, you have to be in union with the Church."

NBC portrayed the dispute between the bishop and the Congressman as "increasingly bitter" and "personal." It began like this:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: An increasingly bitter dispute has been playing out in recent weeks between Congressman Patrick Kennedy, the youngest son of the late Ted Kennedy, and his Roman Catholic bishop. As NBC’s Ron Allen reports tonight, it is the latest instance of the Church asserting a role in some of this nation’s most contentious issues.

RON ALLEN: As the nation grapples with emotional issues like health care reform, abortion and same-sex marriage, the Catholic Church is flexing its religious and political muscle, caught up in an unlikely personal argument with Representative Patrick Kennedy, son of the late Senator, over his bishop's request in a confidential letter not to take communion because he supports abortion rights.

We all know which side NBC would take in deciding which is more precious to America, the Kennedy family or the Catholic bishops. But if the church was as aggressive as Barry Lynn suggested, the bishop wouldn't send the congressman a secret letter asking nicely that he refrain from taking communion (the bishop says he sent a letter in 2007, long before this public debate). He would publicly excommunicate him.

Obviously, there are a large number of pro-abortion Catholic politicians (especially in New England), so that could turn into a very broad order of business. The current course seems much more moderate and less muscular than the Barry Lynns of the world want to paint it.

How much did Patrick Kennedy pay for this interview?

What a pathetic whiner!

Frankly, I'm astonished at the ingratitude of this twerp. When his father died, there were calls for the church to withhold any Catholic funeral because of his father's stand on abortion and other social issues. However, the church rolled out the carpet for his father. Now, it turns out that the local bishop had been dealing with Patrick for two years, handling it all privately -- hardly evidence of a church who's "flexing their muscle" -- and this bumbler whines about it to a newspaper now. Why? To make himself out to be a hero ... he's fighting for truth, above the church. What a jerk!

  • If his father's funeral proves anything, it's that the church pursues these matters privately, going out of their way to minimize any "heavy hand." There was no muscle flexed here.
  • Now, look at the way the story was portrayed. The report suggests that Kennedy is fighting for a civil right, despite being betrayed by his own church. He is "heroically" fighting to "save lives." But this myth tramples reality. The church isn't publicly attacking Kennedy. This was from two years ago. There was no "attack." Despite the report's spin, this had nothing to do with healthcare.
  • Naturally, when the network reporter needed to have a quote to bash the church, they turned to always-reliable Barry Lynn. How does Barry Lynn portray a bishop's private letter as a political heavy hand? Lynn has become a comical political prostitute.

This is a perfect template for how politicians manipulate the media, and how NBC prostitutes itself by complying with pleasure.

Civil Right

The Church has the absolute authority to decide who its members will be and who will receive communion. There is nothing political about that. It is fundemental to the nature of religious freedom.

NBC really does not get it.

Kennedy and NBC are the

Kennedy and NBC are the ones crossing the line here. They are the ones politicizing a religious matter, and neither get it, that this is a religious matter. The Catholic Church is exercising it's Constitutional right to freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof.

I thought I heard a report

I thought I heard a report that this happened 3 years ago.

"DumbAssity of Dope"

Liberals hate absolutes.

There has to be 2 sides to every issue to them. The Ten Commandments should be the 10 Suggestions in their minds.

Thou shalt not kill ...some people. Murderers we don't execute but babies we abort, and so forth and so on....

Good vs not so good

I have had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Bishop Tobin when he was in Youngstown, OH.  Bishop Tobin is the real deal.  Unlike the Catholic church hierachy near Boston, Bishop Tobin lives his faith AND his vow of poverty.   He does not think he is royalty.  Unfortunately, little Paddy Kennedy is used to dealing with the church politicians and royalty in the Boston diocese.  He is truly a pea-brain and a member of the "lucky sperm club."  I applaud Bishop Tobin and the other Church leaders for FINALLY leading on the area of abortion.  Politicians like Kennedy, Pelosi et all can no longer have it both ways when it comes to abortion.  I say to them find a church that supports your views and quit trying to change the Catholic church.  It is absolutely time for people of all faiths to be much more vocal on this issue and stop placating.

RoloT: Thanks for sharing what you know about Bishop Tobin

He sounds like a wonderful man.

Why do the Kennedys still pretend...

to be Catholic?

Patrick seems to have inherited all of the bad characteristics of both of his parents.  This is nothing more than political hackery and Chris Matthews, a purported Catholic, is aiding and abetting Kennedy in slamming the Church solely for political gain.  A private pastoral letter from almost three years ago is being used to boost Kennedy's "rep"- what a hypocrite!

actually it is reversed

Actually, it is politics infringing on religious rights. The church (any church) has ABSOLUTE God given rights to "require" members of their flock to follow their biblically based mandates and directives.

is the one who made this public not the Church.  So this is a matter of a man trying his case in the court of public opinion.  GUILTY!

Liberalism: The haunting feeling that someone, somewhere, can help themselves.

Money quote from Tim Graham

When Catholic officials endorse liberal initiatives like immigration
reform or oppose an execution, the networks don’t worry about the
separation of church and state.

And that is it, in a nutshell.

They want the Church to speak up about "social justice" issues, but shut up about matters of personal morality.

The Branch Kennedinian Sect of the Church has it's own rules

Send in the tanks.

Patrick is a

Patrick is a Kennedy-Catholic; you know, like an African-American.

They are Catholics, but with their own cultural ideas and customs.

Yes, well, Henry VIII disagreed with the Church

Look where that got him.

Excommunicated.  I hope the same happens to Kennedy for this.

I hope he fails, too.

Separation of Church and State

The funny thing is how these people do not see how they crossed the line. If the Bishop actually had not said something he would have violated church doctrine and has been stated earlier it is the Churchs business. When the liberal crowd wants to dictate how the church should act it is them that have crossed the line. It is a violation of the First Amendment to have any Govt. Official or thier Proxy dictate the Churchs teachings in any way. You can state your opinion but this has cleary crossed the line because they are treating the Church as a Political Entity.

limited separation

No lay Catholic may be compelled to work actively to implement Church teaching.  No Catholic at all has the option of working actively against Church teaching, though.  For example, the Senate's health care bill does not exclude public funding for abortion, nor conscience-protection clauses for health care workers; so Catholic legislators are free to vote 'present' or 'no' on it.  A 'yes' vote works actively (and publicly) against the Church, though; and the act, itself, may incur excommunication, latae sentenciae.

Let's break down the imbecility here:

1) "I can’t understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time...You mean to tell me the Catholic Church is going to be denying those people life-saving health care? I thought they were pro-life."

First, Kennedy creates a "straw man" of the Catholic Church's position and then begins to dismantle his illusion. The Catholic Church historically has stood for life in every form. Whether against euthenasia, abortion or whether promoting the welfare of the family, they have been consistent throughout. The argument isn't whether health care is a good idea or not. The argument is whether or not they will support a bill that promotes the murder of babies.

On the one hand, yes, health care reform is necessary, on the other - but not at the expense of other human life and to promote an evil agenda.

This distinction requires logic and common sense, both of which seem to be absent from his postion.

2) "So this is an absolute red herring and I don’t think that it does anything but to fan the flames of dissent and discord..."

"Discord" is necessary to prevent evil from flourishing. It is inconceivable that we live in a day and age where we actually have to argue whether protecting an innocent baby from murder is right or wrong. May the dissent and discord swell!

3) "I think the Church sees this as a golden opportunity to turn Church doctrine into the law of the United States at every level, and, frankly, they're not above using spiritual and political blackmail to do it."

This is called"arguing from silence".You create a "straw man" and then argue the opponents position based on your own false illusion of their position. The fact is, there is one issue that is at odds with the Catholic Church - abortion. Nothing more, nothing less. Abortion is murder and should not be financed and promoted by the US government.

They are not using "blackmail" they are holding to their tradition.  The Church is not the government's whipping boy and won't be strong armed into caving just because some political weakling is incapable of standing up for moral truth. Murder and perversion is not of moral value.

And, if the church desired to impose itself upon the federal government, it would've been done a long time ago. Liberals wouldn't stand a chance.

Thanks Ireland

I'll never forgive Ireland for letting this clan of mentally-defective degenerates out of their country. How much better off our country would be without the entire lot.

Where is the line?

To the Left, the line starts where their policy positions start.  So if a Gay female "priest" gives a seminar ro public school fifth graders on the wonders of the gay lifestyle, that's fine, but if little Johnny son of a preacher man prays before eating his lunch, that's a violation.

In reality, the line defines the limits on the government (not the "Church") as delineated in the 1st Amendment.

Here's a thought for that

Here's a thought for that spoiled, arrogant, abusive junkie child Patrick Kennedy: you don't have a right to Communion.  If you don't like it, piss off to another Church, preferably one that specializes in the worship of the Kennedy family, as your inbred mob all seems to think that they are the true God.  And take your Hugo Chavez butt boy cousin Joe with your sorry a**...turns out he couldn't bribe the Church into an anulment, so perhaps he and the other Kennedys can stop squatting in the Catholic Church and move on to one more befitting of their limited values.

Well said fitzfong.  I just

Well said fitzfong.  I just want to add that I think it's about time the Catholic Church became more proactive in enforcing doctrine.  If Kennedy doesn't like the church rules he can either recieve guidance from his priest, or leave the church.  I'd be thrilled if the Kennedy's left the church.

Sometimes the Church is its

Sometimes the Church is its own worst enemy in this matter.  It falls into the same trap as the "big tent" Republicans do: in trying to maintain and even expand its eroding membership, the Church starts to compromise its core values to placate those who are not committed enough to its mission.  They take their committed base for granted in order to chase after "desirable" "moderates" to build a "new majority".  And these uncommitted "moderates" come at a price...one that compromises the core values of the Church and of the Republican Party, because "moderates" believe themselves to be valuable commodities who need to be pandered to...so they seek more than tolerance of their differences, they seek for their differences to supercede the core principles of the organization(s) they join, and threaten to leave if not accommodated.  "Moderates" use the empty threat of a "permanent minority" as blackmail to get the Church/the Party to soften on certain core positions.  If they ever expect to stop the rot and grow properly, the Church and the Republican Party need to abandon the current approach that has them subjecting themselves to criticism from those outside the organizations.

You didn't mention Matthews

You could have also mentioned Chris Matthews' abominable behavior on Hardball last night, when he browbeat the bishop.  Bishop Tobin is a saint for just sitting there, because I would hauled off and popped that arrogant punk Matthews.

Communion is not about popularism

I've linked with an excerpt to this post from Exposing Bias and Deception at NBC

It is not about a pretense ...  It is either by belief in what the bible says about it or it is mocking ... 1 Cor. 11:26-27 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats
the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be
guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord."

Boy, how quickly the LSM pickup up the talking points....

Patrick (ie, Boy Kennedy) Kennedy put out a press notice three YEARS after he was denied communion and look how many of the L(ame)SM jumped out there to cover (defend) him....

Boy, I guess that really shows you who IS and IS NOT on the take for the progressive/socialist/liberal/communist agenda.

Why do I get the sneaky

Why do I get the sneaky feeling that Patrick Kennedy was just in it for the free wine?
