For those who remember MSNBC’s Chris Matthews kicking Michelle Malkin off his show in 2004 for daring to question John Kerry’s Vietnam heroism on his show, that his show wouldn’t allow smear specialists, he certainly disproved that on Friday by bringing in Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi, the author of the infamous 2005 New York Press article "52 Funniest Things About the Upcoming Death of the Pope." (So much for Chris Matthews, Respectful Catholic.) Matthews asked why people don’t like Rush Limbaugh, and Taibbi promptly dismissed Rush Limbaugh as a "fat, pill-popping idiot," to which Matthews laughed and replied "I’m glad I asked."
His other guest, Margaret Carlson of Bloomberg News (formerly of Time), is a liberal who’s listened to Limbaugh’s show, and provided a counterpoint: "He’s beloved. And he’s more entertaining and more intellectual than the other talk show hosts. He has a conservative philosophy. He’s not dumb." That may not be music to the ears of intellectual hosts, from Hugh Hewett to the lawyers Laura Ingraham and Mark Levin, but at least there was a counterpoint. (Video here.)
A few minutes later, Matthews professed "Matt, you’re amazing." Here’s the Limbaugh exchange.
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Why don't people like Rush Limbaugh?
MATT TAIBBI: He's abrasive, he's divisive, he's a fat, pill-popping idiot. [Matthews laughs] He's completely abrasive to, you know, the centrist people in this country. And the Democrats would love to make him the public face of the Republican Party. He would automatically win them, you know, hundreds of thousands of votes in every election.
MATTHEWS: "Well, I'm glad I asked. Ha! Fat, pill-popping, what was the last adjective you had on him?
TAIBBI: I don’t know, buffoon –
MATTHEWS: Idiot, I think, you chose there. Margaret, do you want to add to this line of thinking here? Ha! What I’m asking you is why don’t people like him in the polling?
MARGARET CARLSON: I don’t think he’s as unlikable as he was just described by Matt. To those who like him, they love him, unlike any of the other talk show hosts. He’s beloved. And he’s more entertaining and more intellectual than the other talk show hosts. He has a conservative philosophy. He’s not dumb.
Carlson then shifted to the subject of how RNC chairman Michael Steele appears to be a media spokesman who’s not involved enough in the nitty-gritty.

March 8, 2009 - 12:57 ET by danybhoyThe only thing that the lefties siad about Rush that thought was sort close to the mark was saying he looked like an "Eastern European Gangster". At CPAC, with the exception of a gold chain, he did look something like one. The black on black sportcoat & shirt, unbuttoned with no tie left him open for that one. But I hope he goes after the left with the same sort of intensity & ruthlessness that you would see in an "Eastern European Gangster", from a media standpoint.
As for Mathews laughing at Rush, who cares. Mathews is hardly an impact player. Rush IS the biggest & baddest player in the political media today, PERIOD. Rush can look at his bank account & laugh at Mathews, who just took a $3million paycut. Mathews is just another MSM buttboy treading water as a "journalist". Screw him.

I may make a lot of people mad but I don't see alcoholism as a "disease." If it is then it is the only "disease" that is mentioned in the Bible as a sin too. Amazing that God would disassociate fellowship with someone for a disease. My grandfather was an alcoholic. I saw what it did to him. I would never say he was sick because of his Wild Turkey. It was his choice to drink.
Let me get off my soapboax on the issue of alcohol. The Dems have a lot more problems, especially the Hollywood crowd, with substance abuse. You don't see them making fun of them.

Hmmm, does that also mean that God disassociates fellowship from someone if they develop lung cancer after a lifetime of smoking? Or develop heart disease after a lifetime of poor dietary habits? I mean, those were choices those people made that resulted in "real" disease affliction, right?

Us v. Them
March 8, 2009 - 10:15 ET by KC MulvilleWell, where does it say that a country has to be one big, happy family?
I don't want to beat a dead horse, but a country is not a family. We're a joint partnership. We cooperate with each other for efficiency's sake. There is no requirement that we like each other.
There's another fiction. The media presents itself as our national living room, where the whole family watches together. But the media, especially the news divisions, aren't for the whole family. They broadcast shows, and analyze events, strictly for fellow liberals. The only conservative media are in talk radio, and some on FoxNews.
When Matthews and friends gather to chat, stop thinking that they're going to be open-minded to everyone in the family. There ain't no family. These shows are nothing but private clubs holding private meetings. And if they want to spend their time bashing Them, so be it.
Liberate yourself from the lie that these people speak for you. They proclaim they do, but as this website documents every day, they're liberals speaking to liberals.

March 8, 2009 - 12:06 ET by WingletDriverTim,
Ms. Carlson may have been talking about some other "conservative" talkers like Michael Savage, Mancow and especially Sean Hannity. My personal opinion: none of these three are intellectual; others will disagree. Certainly Rush is more intellectual than at least the first two. I wouldn't even call these two conservatives. Ms. Carlson might have even been considering Howard Stern when she complimented Rush.
Additionally, Hewett's, Ingraham's and Levin's audiences and reaches are much smaller than Hannity's or Stern's even if you exclude their TV shows.
Last, I'd like to add Bill Bennett's name to the list of conservative intellectual talk show hosts. We no longer have him here in DC, but I enjoyed his show even more than Rush's.

"The only way to reduce the number of nuclear weapons is to use them."
This was just a SMATTERING of Rush's stupidity. For a more comprehensive list, you'll have to wait till I get back from church. Oh, It'll be interesting to see how many of his lunacies the kool aid drinkers among us, agree with!
Acts 2_38, Nice
March 8, 2009 - 13:59 ET by hydrodynDMActs 2_38,
Nice list.
Problem is, you have to provide proof that it's an "objective fact" that:
1) Limbaugh said all of these things you object to while stoned
2) That if he was stone, that he would have made statements that were substantively different than if he were sober
3) That his dim listeners wouldn't have known the difference.
What you have done is simply supply a list of statements that you object to. You haven't backed up your original post in any way.
Well the time frame shows
March 8, 2009 - 14:31 ET byWell the time frame shows that he was stoned and the stupidity of the statements backs that WAAAAY up!
Most of them have attribution, some even have video. Look at the attack that Rush launched on Michael J Fox! He was stoned on thirty oxy's a day DURING THIS TIME.
The fact that most of his listeners didn't similarly object means that (A) they are just as retarded as Rush is and (B)that they didn't know he was stoned! What part of that are you struggling with?
I listen to him all the time and I can certainly tell that all of the colds, the coughs, the flem, the hoarseness not to mention the constant talk about wines, shows me that he is probably STILL getting loaded! Certainly his stupidity about wanting the President to fail is indicative of that. I mean, if the man can succeed doing it his way, maybe your way isn't the only way, y'know?
By the way, I am not aware of ANY Narcotics Anonymous program that allows it's clientele to drink wine repeatedly, as Rush says he does, are you?
Your second "point" is a "have you stopped beating your wife" point! How could I prove that if he wasn't stoned he wouldn't have said the same thing? The only thing I have to show is HOW INCREDIBLY STOOOPID his statements have been and then show how his Kool Aid drinkers LAPPED IT UP! Their lack of objections to his lunacy makes it easy to show that they didn't know how high he was EVEN THOUGH he ADMITTED to being high as a Georgia pine during this period! LOL. Roflmao.
I mean Rush has objectively given us a lengthy time frame to work with during which he made umpteen stupid statements and during which his listeners found no fault with him! 'Nuff said.

March 8, 2009 - 15:10 ET by hydrodynDMActs 2_38,
You say:
My second point doesn't make an assumption that you disagree with, so no, it isn't an example of a "have you stopped beating your wife" type of argument. You might want to look things like that up before you throw them out there.
In your original post, you suggest that Limbaugh's listeners are too stupid to realize that a lot of Limbaugh's statements were made while he was stoned. That is predicated on the assumption that Limbaugh wouldn't have made those statements while somber, otherwise, even an intelligent listener wouldn't have been able to pick up on any difference.
Following me?
If you can't prove that "he wouldn't have said the same thing", then how can you make an argument and call it "objective fact"?
You can't.
But wait, then you say:
Nope. You have to show exactly what I said you have to. That fact that you seem to be "struggling" with this might cause some people to characterize you as, well, "dim".
Limbaugh coughing or being hoarse has no bearing on the substance of his arguments.
Here, let me reword your argument for you:
"I think Rush is a racist and I don't like the things he says. The fact that some people agree with him bothers me so I'll characterize them as stupid because anyone who doesn't agree with me is stupid".

March 8, 2009 - 13:32 ET by SmartypantsAre you serious? You have the nerve to charge anyone else as being "dim" even at the same time you are displaying nothing but dimness of your own mind. First of all, support your "objective facts" with a substantive reference, other than from a left wing blog; otherwise, they are just empty statements. Secondly, who cares how much Limbaugh was taking? It was a prescription drug that he got hooked on while he experienced a medical problem. Contrast this with the endless number of liberals who get hooked on drugs for no other reason than their own narcissistic needs; and then claim they're cured, before going down the same path again and again. Limbaugh addressed his problem, and beat it. It is also interesting how you call Limbaugh "allegedly" clean. In the liberal world, conservatives are always guilty until proven innocent, and then they are still guilty.
Fact: You don't know the first thing about Limbaugh's show or his statements. He is the most anti-racist I've ever seen, so much so that liberals like yourself cannot stand it, because you are all closet racists in your own right. March 8, 2009 - 15:36 ET by BDIn a nutshell, the Ruch Limbaugh postion viv-a-vis M J Fox was that the left has a nasty habit of throwing up "Victims" before congressional panels, and when you refute their positions using logic, you are instantly attacked on emotional grounds. They impute an "ir-refutability" to these people and assert any statement you make is instantly either an attack or you desire bad things to happen to the "Victim." Niether of which is correct.
Limbaugh was correct, and did not actually openly attack Fox. Liberals instantly went into overdrive and asserted Limbaughs position was defacto an assault on Fox and then counter-attacked.
They would not stand for it if we did a similar thing in which we said that any statement made by a liberal in regards to the GWOT was defacto an assault on every US Soldier. Nor do Conservatives seek to place such before the public.
Limbaugh was correct, and

March 9, 2009 - 07:34 ET by BDTo my memory, the position the left freaked out about was Limbaughs assertion that Fox had likely gone off his medication to make his testimony to congress more dramatic.
The "Mocking" consisted of Limbaugh doing a before and after demonstration of what Fox looked like on medication and likely without it. Why did he do this? Well, Fox being an Actor, is his testimony to be assumed to be free of dramatics?
Then the leftists imputed the typical "He is a victim and therefore free from challenge" argument.
For the record, M J Fox in his testimony did exhibit more symptoms of his disease than he exhibited on stage. THerefore, the assumption is apt.
If this is "Mocking" then mock away.

Please refrain from commenting on ANYTHING i say. A moron like you is hardly deserving of my time. But if you diss me I will diss you right back because I am tired of an idiot like you popping up in my posts.
NOTHING that I said in my post could be construed as AGREEING with Michael J. Fox on ANYTHING. And only a loon such as you or the other moron who agrees with you, would think so.
There is a difference between disagreeing with someone and defaming or slandering or LYING about them as you and Rush did. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL but just like you are incapable of reading the "scriptures" that you somehow wish to slime my with, doesn't mean that you get to impart motives to my writing that isn't there.
Many people disagreed with Mr Fox's stance on embryonic stem cell research, me chief among them. However, as one NOT suffering from a debilitating disease, I think he has the right to have "hope" in whatever he wants. Because i disagree with him doesn't mean that I am going to LIE about him intentionally magnifying his symptoms. That's just low. But since it's around your level I guess it's okay with you. THere is a difference between psychogenic drugs and those used to kill pain. Painkillers are designed to NOT impede cognition, and actully allow a person to concentrate on other things other than their pain.
Perhaps you would be stunned to note that JFK was similarly addicted to prescription drugs, and for a similar ailment (back pain). But back then the drugs were not so "Clean" and had the unintended consequense of slowing mental processes?
I guess you will now claim that JFK's followers in the Dem party were similarly moronic? Camelot? Hahahahahahaha!
By the way, please show me a single case where Limbaugh has race baited? I can show you REAMS of data on Democrats, damn few on Republicans who racebait....
Even the cases that are usually attributed to Limbaugh are usually him making fun of Liberal Racebaiters such as the Rev Al, or his clones....
March 8, 2009 - 14:56 ET byBiggest LIE in the LIARS arsenal is that there is a difference between being hooked on prescription meds and any other kind of dope. There isn't. And at THIRTY PILLS A DAY you better believe that a painkiller becomes a hallucinogen. You people just make excuses for your side just like the Dems. A broke crack addict has lots of reasons for taking dope too, that doesn't excuse it. I've been on painkillers for things much more serious that Rush's problems, try getting shot multiple times and then get back to me, and I didn't become a PILL HEAD. Even with nerve damage that prevented me from feeling the lower left side of my face properly for four years, I didn't become a Pill head! So just like Limbaugh had no compassion for other drug addicts, I have none for him!
Just because some stuffed shirt says this med is legal and this med is a "street drug" doesn't make it true. Alcohol is a legal drug that will kill you, made legal because of the tariffs , that alone should show you that the designation of one drug as good and another as "low class" is really in your mind. A hop head who sends his maid out to cop THIRTY FRIGGIN PILLS A DAY is no different than a crack head giving blow jobs on the corner! And only a racist who wants to find a distinction between their behavior and that of some "lower class" person, would think there is a difference!
The ABUSE is the thing!
"By the way, please show me a single case where Limbaugh has race baited? "

Nerve damage and painkillers
March 8, 2009 - 16:26 ET by easygoerEven with nerve damage that prevented me from feeling the lower left
side of my face properly for four years, I didn't become a Pill head!.
In 2006 I was involved in a very severe auto accident. Among many other injuries my face was crushed, eye sockets and all. I have had complete facial reconstruction surgery. This includes steel plates where my cheekbones were. One of the consequences of my accident was nerve damage to the point where I have no feeling in my face in the area between my upper lip and lower eyelids (nose included) I can put a cigarette out on my cheek and wouldn't feel it. My doctor told me I will never recover feeling in this area. Needless to say, it sucks; makes kissing a girl less pleasurable and shaving a real pain in the ass. One thing it doesn't do is hurt. There is no need for painkillers. You say you lost feeling in your face; that being so, why would you even need painkillers?
I was on painkillers after my accident, not for my face but for my nine broken ribs. Now that hurt. I also did not become a pill head. Again, this is just my experience.
Happily, after four surgeries including a nose job (never thought I'd ever get one of those) I'm pretty much back to looking like I did prior to the accident. I also now have great respect for plastic surgeons. I used to think they were only for vain and shallow people. Not only did my plastic surgeon patch me up, she is very proud of the work she's done on some of our troops back from the Mideast who have facial injuries far worse than mine.

Do you think that all conservatives drink the same Kool Aid like the liberals? Or do you think it impossible to fight against abortion, homosexual rights and big government and not like a Rush Limbaugh?
And for the record what kind of "conservative" is Limbaugh, all I ever hear him talking about is money, he gave some lip service to being for Prop 8 but he didn't do a SINGLE SHOW about it! It was a BLURB at the beginning and end of arcs! He's pissed and moaned about taxing the rich FAR MORE than he EVER talked against the homosexual encroachment in our schools. He rails against spending FAR MORE than he EVER talks about the homo's going into schools and teaching fisting and golden showers! He was SILENT on the bills in california that ELIMINATED THE WORDS MOTHER AND FATHER from California textbooks! Not a single show devoted to the liberals destruction of MORALITY in our country, the only think he ever talks about is MONEY.
"Out of the treasures of the heart, the mouth speaketh".
A proverb that means that the things you hold dear are what you devote your time to talking about. And with Limbaugh it's ALL MONEY all the time! Everything else gets cursory examination at best. More Objective Facts.
March 8, 2009 - 21:36 ET by Mike76The sad thing about Act 2_38 is the Objective Fact that he has no functioning brain. The good thing about Act 2_38 is the fact that he is so sexually repulsive, the chances are slim that he'll reproduce.
Objective Fact: Every Obama worshipper supports race baiting hate filled rhetoric whether stoned or sober! Just look at who they worship.
Objective Fact: Obama worshippers make up lies like "Limbaugh was on enough dope to kill a
large elephant." If he consumed enough to "kill a large elephant," then he'd be dead.
Objective Fact: Obama worshippers don't know if Obama is (A) stoned, the state in which he spent much of his youth, or (B)
can't tell the difference between then and now that he's allegedly
clean. Well, to be fair, nobody else can either.
Objective Fact: Obama worshippers are too stupid to figure out that normal people have a good laugh whenever they try to pass off their paranoid hallucinations as "Objective fact."

Acts… Why does it bother
March 8, 2009 - 15:39 ET by maggieqpublicActs… Why does it bother you so much that Rush Limbaugh has captured the hearts (and minds) of millions of Americans?
My husband and I operate a small business, and we are generally together at our desks for an hour or so of Rush’s show a few times each week. We smile… we laugh…. we discuss.
Are you trying to tell us that we’re stupid, or what?

edited for truth.
March 8, 2009 - 21:59 ET by Mike76Acts, you give me the creeps, for some reason. There is something very wrong with you. I probably shouldn't play with an unstable person, but it's just too much fun to turn your words 180 degrees around to come up with something that's probably close to the truth. Here goes:
"Actually, about the Jug-eared, ugly mutant who has captured your heart, and probably, your libido, Acts, we don't have a clue that Obama is no longer a drug addict. Most of his records have been closed off from public scrutiny, and he's been caught in so many lies already, it's impossible to keep up. Considering some of his off-teleprompter comments, I think it's probable that he's usually high as a kite. How many states in the US are there, again? 58? LOL.
However, there are something called MEDICAL
EXAMS, freak, Every President takes them, even if they're dopers. then they tell you that they're clean but have to get out of the White House frequently because of all the "stress," and then they throw lavish parties with plenty of booze, no doubt, while the county suffers.
That's it, I can't do this anymore. "Dabating" with you, Acts, is like stepping on an ant.

March 8, 2009 - 15:38 ET by puredmashiethe theme of this thread is (or was) chris matthews' double standard with respect to character assassination. questioning the legitimacy john kerry's heroism is such a no no that it will get you kicked off his show, but insulting rush limbaugh evokes chuckles. as expected, the mere mention of the most successful host in radio talk today, with a daily audience that dwarfs matthews' own, brings out the trolls with the usual name calling and juvenile insults. and what do the readers of this site do? they fall into the trap and argue with our guest, getting the thread off topic and giving this genleman what he wants.
addiction to pain killers is usually reserved for professional football players, or other athletes. i've experienced debilitating pain from a ruptured disc in my lower back, and tried to manage the pain with vicotin (hydrocodin is the generic term). that's what dr. house chomps on every monday night. fortunately for me i was able to have surgery and now i am pain-free, but rush isn't so lucky. his ruptured disc is in his neck and the surgery required for that would have to go in through his throat. since that's how he earns his livelihood he was reluctant to do that, and mismanagement of his pain killers led to his addiction. liberals like our guest can't seem to accept this because they don't understand that drugs have a purpose and weren't created just for our entertainment.
swing hard in case you hit it.

March 8, 2009 - 15:15 ET by mostlymoderateI don't think I was ever aware of how "elitist" our mainstream media really is. Rush Limbaugh has had some of the most informative shows of anyone on the radio. EVER! But I guess he, and all the rest of us, are just a bunch of dumb, redneck-hicks. It's nice to know how people like Matthews feels about us redstaters.
Yep, we're dumb rednecks and worse . . .

U.S. News and World Report - 10 Things About Rush Limbaugh
March 8, 2009 - 15:20 ET by Rush FanU.S. News and World Reports' Debra Bell has searched a variety of news sources and has come up with 10 Things You Didn't Know About Rush Limbaugh.
Here is #10: Limbaugh shares a secluded 24,000-square-foot beachfront mansion in Palm Beach with his cat, Pumpkin. A life-size oil portrait of Limbaugh hangs on the wall of the main staircase. The property contains four other homes, all owned by him.

March 8, 2009 - 20:07 ET by JerAfraid you'll never make it as a ringside announcer by starting with the 12th round and working backwards..
The Last Republican Standing a/k/a Rush Limbaugh first announced to his 20,000,000 (?) listeners that he "wanted Obama to fail" and implored the media to print that headline. Obama privately suggested to a small group of Republican congressmen that they couldn't just listen to Rush and get things done. Limbaugh took humbrage and it has proceeded from there.

Impossible. I had already built up an incredible tolerance by the time I was ten years old.
Anyway, I understand your point. And the wisdom of Obama choosing to engage Rush is an open question. That said, I see it as a response to being slammed by Limbaugh i.e. standing up to the bully [I know you disagree with that characterization]. It may or may not pay off.

Limbaugh really needs to
March 8, 2009 - 22:16 ET by NL207Limbaugh really needs to invite this turd, Mathews, to come and debate him. We recently learned that Obama lacks the stones to do so. If Limbaugh extends such and invitation to this effeminate bombast, Mathews, we will soon learn HE doesn't have any stones either.
NO WAY...
March 9, 2009 - 06:38 ET by danybhoyNL207,
Why the hell should El-Rushbo should he share ANY platform with Mathews? WHY?
It would only lower Rush's standing by giving that absolute broadcasting failure any kind of forum with Rush. We also would learn nothing from a debate between Mathews & Rush. We all know how it would turn out, sort of like dropping the mouse in the tank to feed the snake.

March 9, 2009 - 10:48 ET by jawebster1this morning but I do know who and what Chris Matthews is. Chris Matthews is a self centered talk show host who is jealous of Rush and people on Fox because his career hasn't taken off and done as well as his competitors. He hasn't even done as well as Odorman and that little boy-girl on his own network. In other words, he is jealous, he can't stand it and he is lashing out at every opportunity.
