WaPo Hypes Homecoming Drag Queen at George Mason as 'Glittering Moment of Inclusiveness'

The top of Friday’s Metro section of The Washington Post touted the drag queen who became Homecoming Queen at George Mason University. The enthusiastic headline was "Work That Tiara, Boy!" Inside the Metro section, the headline was "Not Everyone Is Celebrating Glittering Moment of Inclusiveness."

The front page subhead noted the election sparked a "campus divide," but Annie Gowen’s story wasn’t really interested in the critics of Ryan Allen (drag queen name: Reann Ballslee). She began: "Spend time with George Mason University senior Ryan Allen and it's clear why he's a Big Man on Campus. He wears size 12 pumps."

Gowen and her Post editors see this issue as a happy tale of more respect for diversity and minorities:

Many see it as an expression of inclusiveness at a place where about one-third of the 30,000 students are minority. But others say it is an embarrassment at an inopportune time when Mason is trying to revamp its image from commuter school to distinguished institution of higher learning.

Officially, the university is "very comfortable with it. We're fine," spokesman Daniel Walsch said. The school does not require participants in the Mr. and Ms. Mason pageant to compete along precise gender lines, he said.

The one opponent of the homecoming drag queen simply expressed embarrassment, not a moral argument against homosexuality or cross-dressing:

But electing a dude as homecoming queen is not the way to bolster pride, sophomore Grant Bollinger said. Mason was recently named the No. 1 national university to watch by U.S. News & World Report, he said -- it should act like it.

"It's really annoying," said Bollinger, who works as an ambassador for the admissions office. "The game was on TV. Everyone was there. All eyes were on us. And we do something like this? It's just stupid."

It became just another episode for The Washington Post to preach the need for acceptance of diversity:

Allen said he decided to enter the Ms. Mason contest this year as a joke, a last hurrah for his senior year. Soon he had donned a silver bra and zebra-print pants and was lip-syncing to Britney Spears's "Womanizer" at the qualifying pageant Feb. 9, overseen by Miss Virginia 2009....

Allen grew up in tiny Goochland, Va., about 30 miles northwest of Richmond, and endured years of taunts from classmates after coming out during his freshman year in high school. When Allen came to Mason in 2005, his world grew wider. His drag alter ego, Reann, began performing at nightclubs including Freddie's Beach Bar in Crystal City and Apex in the District. Over the years, Allen perfected his stagecraft, learning how to apply shading makeup to look more feminine and buying gowns on a student budget from other drag queens. His fame grew as each year he emceed Mason's drag show, held during Pride Week. And with fame, acceptance.

The same thing happened on MSNBC (video at Breitbart.tv). Anchor Tamron Hall supportively interviewed Ryan Allen and read from her Twitter commenters, including only the mandatory sermon supporting "open minds" and acceptance:

"Good for him! I support everyone’s right to be themselves and happy. History always seems to favor inclusive people, not exclusive people." So congratulations, Ryan, to you, and I certainly hope you’re, as you said, embraced by those with open minds, and we respect those who don’t appreciate it. Congratulations to Reann, too.

They didn’t respect opponents enough to have a debate, or even read Twitter comments of opponents.

She's a man, baby!

Real schools select their homecoming queen at FOOTBALL games.

I wonder if any reporter has sniffed that something was not right, that the homecoming voting was the result of a joke? People voted for this guy/gal because they hate the whole Homecoming King/Queen process? Is this a college-edition version of Carrie?

Well in the WaPo article it

Well in the WaPo article it does say that he decided to enter as a joke.

And of course, the student body went along with it....

Well, isn't that special....

I think they should have gone whole hog and had a cross-dressing lesbian as King.

The Washington Drag

Just wondering... how many "cross-dressers" does the Washington Post employ.

That is: men who come to work dressed as women. And use the women's washrooms.

How about ZERO.

They have a reception desk, no doubt. How about they employ a 75 year old Drag Hag Queen to greet visitors? That should be fun. Sure, I don't think so.

I bet they have a "dress code" doncha know. And it's no guys in dresses!

Funny how he seems to be thinking

all about himself, what he wants, what he will enjoy. What about the girls that really wanted to be HC Queen? Maybe it had been their dream? What if they were using it as a stepping stone to national pagents? Well, actually none of that really matters. The only thing that matters is, he may be a DRAG QUEEN, but he should never been allowed to try out for HOME COMING QUEEN. There is nothing cool, enlightened or progressive about it. It is just tacky and an embarassment. He works as a professional in bars, for goodness's sakes. I saw the video, and the chick interviewing him, wanted to know why he wasn't all kited out in his finery, and proceeded to kiss his a$$. Disgusting. I feel badly for the students who didn't agree to this.

You mean it WASN'T the Home

You mean it WASN'T the Home Coming King's lifelong dream to share the crown with another dude? I'm shocked at this prejudice.

Right, like the young mand who said this:

"It's really annoying," said Bollinger, who works as an ambassador for
the admissions office. "The game was on TV. Everyone was there. All
eyes were on us. And we do something like this? It's just stupid."

Here this guy is working to promote the school and is rewarded by being embarrassed by this stunt.  I'm sure many or most other students agree and were humiliated by all this.

I'm sure many parents will think twice before sending their kids to this school.

I agree Seashell

And it is this sort of thing that will probably attract quite a few more cross dressing gays, lesbians, etc who could feasably turn it into just another place to make a statement rather than a place to get an actual education.

WAPO - Let's destroy the U.S. social fabric

WAPO celebrates drag queens, and places them and their behavior as "mainstream" (inclusive) these days.

At the same time, WAPO continues to bash conservatives as non-inclusive. Republicans that don't agree with Obama are "unwilling to compromise for the common good".  WAPO tries to put Sarah Palin on the spot. Joe the Plumber is investigated. Israel's Netanyahu is described as a Hawk because he wants to take stands against Hamas and Iran. Gay marriage is supported; and people who only want traditional marriage are disparaged.

It's the typical WAPO-type leftists who are happiest when they can destroy this country's traditions and social fabric.

You hit the nail on the head.  No traditions are sacred anymore.

Our clueless political leaders are about to drive us all over a cliff. The time to HITM is now-before we go over.

Celebrate

The left just loves to celebrate abnormal/deviant behavior. Cornholing, child rape, animal rape, gang banging, tax cheats, spousal abuse, adultery, murder, etc., on and on. If you have no morals, you cannot break a moral code. The only faults you can have would be being a Christian and/or a Republican.

Ah, come on.  They're just

Ah, come on.  They're just college kids.  They don't have much sense.  And the educational establishment's reputation for meaningful leadership has not been growing.

Have to disagree, snags

I don't consider 22 yr olds, "just kids." I was married with a child and one on the way then. My own "child" is 20 with 2 children and married. My son is 19 and runs a business. I think the problem is, in the old days, people had to act like adults and had responsibility. They all couldn't go to college and act like "kids." That's the main problem with libs, they are just old college kids that never grew up.

All a Democrat needs is the upper-story window of public attention and the chamber pot of rhetoric. How else to explain the rise of Joe Biden?  P.J. O' Rourke

and when

and when they are finally tipped out of the nest they have a tremendous chip on their shoulder and a huge load of self-entitlement baggage.

The Right Candidate

Aw, shucks. Ryan Allan would never have had a chance at the crown if Hillary had entered the contest.

Pretty silly tradition

Pretty silly tradition anyway.  We can see what good comes of popularity contests.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Why People Should Really Get On George Mason

Students at GMU should get an F for original thinking.  This stunt has been pulled hundreds of times across the country in HIGH SCHOOLS!  Some 16-year old guy comes out and his ever-so-open-minded classmates nominate him for Homecoming Queen.  It's the little darlings' way of trying to embarass their principal and at the same time show how "grown up and inclusive" they all are.

So here are GMU students reverting back to the salad days of their "youth" and desperately crying out for attention.  Too bad kids, you can't go back.  And pretty soon you'll all be out there in the workplace paying for my Social Security.

I think there's a big

I think there's a big difference in this case, CaringWG. WAPO is clearly celebrating homosexuals and their "see, now we're society's favorites" rather than stupid youth acts.

This is a "stick it in your eye" approach by WAPO.

Where he belongs

This reminds me of a group of hairy cross-dressers that came into a restaurant I night managed during the college years. I felt trouble brewing and receipts falling after about a month of Friday night visits to a popular diner in Ft. Walton Bch, Fl. Redneck country, Air Force Base, Queers. Biding my time I finally rose to action when a big hairy guy in a tight fitting dress needed a head call (bathroom). Blocking the door to the ladies room I denied entry based on equipment. Then, in the coup de gras, I denied use of the men's room based on dress. I knew based on the reaction of onlookers that I had the public's favor and backup if needed. After a few minutes of high pitched whining degraded into a group of lower pitched grousing they left, without paying and never returned. What to do? Then I knew. Now with new laws and rights and, I suppose, prevalence, I just don't know. But Reann looks like just another hairy fool, not a Pro!

Walter Williams could care less

He teaches Economics not social behavior.

These kids are living proof. Sex ed works?

Oh geeze

Homecoming "Queen"

Back when I was in high school (20+ years ago), one of the seniors was suspended for 3 days because he nominated one of his fellow male classmates for Homecoming Queen.  It was rumored that the "nominee" performed at the local gay bar in drag.

Precise???  LOLOL.  Geesh, even male/female is a gray area.  I'm surprised they had a "winner" since that would imply others "lost."  Nothing is precise, there is no yes or no, there is no right or wrong, there is no true or false, there is no up or down, there is no male or female, no winner or loser.....Trophies for everybody!!!

None of that absolute stuff.....Gather 'round now.........

So what's the deal Tim? You didn't actually read the article, just skimmed the headlines trolling for something to crank out an opinion on?

Based on the tone of the article, and the subhead: “Not Everyone Is Celebrating Glittering Moment of Inclusiveness” - how in the name of all that's rationale, then write about how the Post is touting it as a moment of inclusiveness????

Let me guess - you were counting on folks not actually reading the WaPo piece and just taking your (false) word for it eh? LMAO
