Most liberal bloggers want to close Guantanamo, and some even want to make those "poor guys in Gitmo" some baba ghanoush. That aspiring terrorist's chef is the "Phoenix Woman" at Firedoglake, who complained about Rudy Giuliani ("everyone's favorite would-be dictator") on MSNBC's Morning Joe. Rudy's offense was citing the New York Times for reporting on a released Guantanamo detainee who is now deputy al-Qaeda commander in Yemen. But she complained:
Again, no names, facts, figures from the torturemongers. Just scare statements. And a chuckle from Rudy as he contemplates the possible deaths of innocents.

The militant, Said Ali al-Shihri, is suspected of involvement in a deadly bombing of the United States Embassy in Yemen’s capital, Sana, in September. He was released to Saudi Arabia in 2007 and passed through a Saudi rehabilitation program for former jihadists before resurfacing with Al Qaeda in Yemen.

Oh, and as Bob Cesca has pointed out, nobody is pushing to immediately release all of Guantanamo's inmates; instead, they will be transferred to other prison facilities while they receive the due process that was denied them for so many years. Furthermore, as studies by Seton Hall and Amnesty International have shown, the vast majority of the detainees are almost certainly innocent. Why should Rudy and the other torturemongers fear due process that would prove this?
Sorry about this not being a straight cooking column today, folks. Tell you what -- let's talk about the foods we'd cook for the poor guys in Gitmo, if we could. (Hummus, falafel and baba ganoush should be high on the list of meals they miss.)

I have wondered for years about the pathology of just such people. They are so filled with self loathing that they immediately jump to the defense of the worst sort of villain for reasons that elude me. Self-loathing, obviously, but what causes it?
TO assume that the GITMO detainees are innocent flies against all logic and reason.
Most were captured on the battlefield and processed through Bagram by US military interpreters who gave a thumbs up or down whether the detainee was a local caught in the crossfire or a bad guy running amok. It was a triage based system and there was no reason to send the innocent for additional interogation at GITMO if they knew nothing about AQ activities. Extra bodies gives the interogators NOTHING in the way of a positive bonus.
In almost all cases, the people transferred to Gitmo were foreigners who were picked up on the battlefield (Afghans were turned over to Hamid Kharzai's flegeling government for their actions) who at best had the sketchiest excuse for being there. "oh, I came from Saudi Arabia and was scamming on chicks in Tora Bora because I wish to live the authentic Islamic life" is not an unusual excuse for the guys picked up by the US SF guys.
Others such as Hambali were well documented terrorists who were given to US custody so interogations would be unfettered by intermediaries.
So what sort of therapy have these wackjobs undergone to make them automatically assume their country is in the wrong?

I think if people want to open their big mouths about the State having to show mercy to those who apparently didn't believe in it themselves, then they should have to shoulder the responsibility for living with them and keeping track of them.
