Time magazine’s package of campaign news this week comes with a commentary from liberal writer Dahlia Lithwick (usually read at the Slate website). The headline was “The Tracks of Her Tears: When Hillary (nearly) wept, women voters saw not just be femininity but also her humanity.” Dahlia saw Hillary mist over in New Hampshire, and what soon followed was resentment at anyone who saw calculation or manipulation when “she finally lowered her cast-iron shield” and grew emotional:
But the gender card resonated, mostly because it turned the men around Clinton into brutes. Whether it was Obama's sounding a rare sour note by assuring the candidate she was "likable enough" or John Edwards' implying that her Portsmouth tears rendered Clinton somehow unfit for the "tough business" of governance, every woman who's ever been asked whether it's that time of the month must have felt some kinship. (Italics hers.)
It's not clear to me that the women who took a second look at Clinton last week did so because she cried or because the media chose to turn a single checked tear into a sprawling metaphor. I suspect that what actually happened was that Clinton finally revealed she wasn't an android programmed to spit out polling data and talking points as well as the boys. Until New Hampshire, Clinton seemed to carry herself like a President trapped inside a woman's body. Punishing the real Hillary for struggling out is not the way to appeal to women voters.
Not that Dahlia would be one of those women voters. She’s a Canadian citizen.

Wrong Dahlia....on
January 14, 2008 - 14:39 ET by bigtimerWrong Dahlia....on everything...especially every woman must have felt some kinship...
You live in an unreal la-la-land world...and you don't speak for me, not even close.
Hillary was losing, she knew it and pulled out the crying game card that is embarrassing for all of the women I know.
Besides that she is just plain evil, sold her soul to the devil long ago....IMHO.

Hillary did not sell her soul to the devil, she IS the devil.

PS, I'm a wife, mother, daughter, sister, too...in fact, I have her beat...I'm a grandmother too! Does this mean I'm more qualified than she is to be President?

Don't blame Canada
January 14, 2008 - 14:46 ET by reasonsjesterIt doesn't concern me that Dahlia is a Canadian citizen as much as she is taking one moment in Hillary's long career to generalize about the reverse carpet bagger. I didn't see very many tears when Hillary was raiding the office of the just-departed Clinton counsellor Vince Foster. I didn't see her cry when Bill was cavorting around the Oval office with skeezy interns. We see her cry when there is a real danger of her losing a primary state. She is shallow, vain, egotistical, superficial, caustic, biting, condescending, cold, calculating and a strident feminist. Just because she can cry (if you call what she did crying) doesn't mean she is suitable for the presidency. Issues, positions? All this is being left behind in a tabloid-press-worthy maneuver that really displays nothing but Hillary's desparation to win. George Washington, the Founder of the Republic, achieved greatness by refusing to be king. Now we have candidates for president who would like nothing better. We've come a long way baby.

January 14, 2008 - 14:47 ET by mattmCould this be an attempt to Thatcherize Ms. Clinton?
Margaret Thatcher was called the Iron Lady, and although she was hated by the limp-wristed Left, her stature as a great stateswoman is secure in history. Any Hillary sycophant would love the same to be true for her - or at least to give the impression of it.
Maybe we'll have to expand the name a bit:
Senator and First Lady Ms. Sir Edmund Hillary Rodham Foster Luther-King Roosevelt Lincoln Thatcher Clinton.

If it is, it's a miserable failure. Can you imagine the Iron Lady choking up about how "hard" political life is, and whining about going "through the gauntlet" and wanting so much for England (sniff!)?
Uhh, hot flash for Dahlia...
January 14, 2008 - 14:53 ET by DEVILDOCMOMHill is long since past "that time of the month"... Then her comment about the "brutes" around Hill-or is that just Dahlia's view of men.
KGB mis-information
January 14, 2008 - 15:10 ET by JayTeeLook, I saw the Hillary Video, there was absolutely NO TEARS, zero H 2 O. It was an emotional cracking voice moment....but there was no crying dripping Tears...I've seen tears, and there were NOT any recognizable Tears. Maybe I need HD TV to see them ?
Is this the Start of another Urban Ledgend ? How are Mythbusters gonna Dis-prove this one ?

Sinking ship
January 14, 2008 - 21:18 ET by nkviking75Hey Mythbusters: Instead of seeing if a sinking ship would suck survivors underwater as it sank, how about seeing if Hillary's sinking campaign will suck the Democrats to the bottom?
Nah, we probably wouldn't be that lucky.

No, they didn't. We all saw painfully mismanaged polls that suggested that Obama was going to win by double digits when he had previously been way behind in New Hampshire. Hillary was always in the lead and was always going to win New Hampshire. Now, had the New Hampshire Primary been held a week later than Hillary's "Tears" and these polls, it's very likely Obama would have won New Hampshire. Hillary was the proverbial front-running horse who ran out of gas just beyond the finish line...had the race been just another furlong (tears or no tears), she'd have ended up SHOW to Obama's WIN and Edwards' PLACE. Time to send her to the glue factory...
