South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn appeared on WIS-TV yesterday in a round table setting to discuss how the stimulus bill will affect South Carolina. During the debate he stated that he was insulted by opposition to the plan; specifically targeting GOP Governors of Southern States by implying that their opposition was a "slap in the face of African-Americans" as if race was a determining factor.
"The governor of Louisiana expressed opposition. Has the highest African-American population in the country. Governor of Mississippi expressed opposition. The governor of Texas, and the governor of South Carolina.
These four governor's represent states that are in the black belt. I was insulted by that," Clyburn said. "All of this was a slap in the face of African-Americans. It had nothing to do with Governor Sanford." (src - WIS-TV)
Rather than actually quote Congressman Clyburn on these claims the NY Times chose to demagogue the issue by providing their own rationale in a caucus blog post that appears designed to embarrass South Carolina's Republican Governor Mark Sanford.
In response to such sentiments by Mr. Sanford that were echoed by other Republican opponents — as well as worries based on historical patterns in which funds were not disbursed evenly to poor, black districts around the country — Representative James Clyburn, Democrat of South Carolina and the House majority whip, insisted on a passage in the law that includes this caveat:
If funds provided to any state in any division of this act are not accepted for use by the governor, then acceptance by the state legislature, by means of the adoption of a concurrent resolution, shall be sufficient to provide funding to such state. Some state entities may not even need the concurrent resolution. We’re told that Representative Clyburn has reassured South Carolinian officials, Democrats and Republicans alike, that money will flow to the state.
While both CNN and the AP reported on the statements made by Rep. Clyburn both made sure to include the obligatory "highest-ranking black congressman" designation for the South Carolina Democrat. (Of course the independent labeling by the separate news outlets couldn't possibly be taken from the Rolodex of labels that often serves to provide cover and validation for baseless charges against Republicans.)
None of this explains why states with substantially lower African American populations such as Alaska would want to scrutinize the provisions attached to the stimulus plan but it plays well in a media that caters to the left.
Imagine how we have come full circle. During the election we were branded racists if we supported John McCain, yesterday we became cowards despite electing the first African American President in U.S. history, and today we are back to being what I imagine is cowardly racists simply because we don't tow the Democrat line.

Racism
February 20, 2009 - 15:04 ET by cvgbuckeyeJust like we all told everyone during the election. If the dems, with C hairman Obama, gain control of all 3 branches of government, any and all opposition to them will be termed racism and political diversity will be criminalized.
Crazily radical were'nt we! Never dreamed this could happen in this country but I reckon I was naive.

So Much For Post-Partisanship
February 21, 2009 - 09:22 ET by Wildcatter1980A truly post-partisan president would immediately chide the esteemed congressman for making such divisive remarks.
Then, again, maybe Mr. Obama does not feel he can since he does not have "slave blood" running through his veins, that he isn't "down for the struggle" like the the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of America.
I warned some time ago that we had best be prepared for the cries of "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST!" if we don't "fall in line", if we dare to criticize "The One" or any of his policies.

In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. - Ronald Reagan from his first inaugural address

Clyburn is race baiting.
February 20, 2009 - 15:07 ET by superconWhat he said is ridiculous and he knows it. It is also very irresponsible for any media outlet to give him a platform to spew his nonsense without critque. He doesn't need the Governor to distribute those funds because he made sure.He inserted it himself.
"If funds provided to any state in any division of this act are not

Race baiting pure and simple. It's how Democrats roll me homey.
Because with a name like Obama... you know it has to be good.
Representative Clyburn is a racist.
February 20, 2009 - 16:42 ET by HillbillyKingI've stated elsewhere that only racists race bait and I believe Rep. Clyburn's remarks are another example of that.
First lets define racism...
Racism
1:
a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and
capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority
of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination (e.m.)
Now let's look at the Rep.'s remarks.....
"These four governor's represent states
that are in the black belt. I was insulted by that," Clyburn said. "All
of this was a slap in the face of African-Americans."
Rep. Clyburn's intentional reference to an area where the majority population is European-American as a "black belt" and his refusal to acknowledge the impact that declining the stimulis money may have on European-Americans is racial discrimination and prejudice.
I find it strange,(no, not really) that the public refuses to hold minorities to the same standards when labeling someone a racist.
A racist is a racist regardless of their skin color.
If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; But if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

February 20, 2009 - 17:20 ET by Indiana JoeThe ground-work for this was laid long ago. Nobody cares about keeping any power in the states. The term "state's rights" is now only associated with the pro-life movement and, even more strongly, the Confederacy. Just say "state's rights" and watch how quickly you're labeled a racist!
The suckling on the federal teat was started by FDR, and accelerated under LBJ. Once a plurality of voters was "hooked," the tipping point was reached.

State-by-State Stimulus Bill
One example in my town that makes me want to scream: $105 million for the Gary Housing Authority to acquire 700 new units.
These "units" are obviously housing for "the poor." If one bothers to do the math, it comes out to $150,000 per "unit."
I would lay good money that there are not now 700 privately owned homes in Gary, Indiana worth $150,000! Certainly not mine!

Republican Opposition to Stimulus Bill was popular, not racist
February 20, 2009 - 15:42 ET by Gary HallNo, no, no, no, no.. Republican Opposition to the Stimulus Bill was a popular position - it supported the majority view of the American people - we the people. It was not racist.
Numerous national polls (CBS, Gallop, Rasmussen, etc.) leading up to the vote clearly showed that a majority (and a strong majority on some issues) of voters did not support the bills as presented; that they preferred less spending (pork - pork it Schumer) and wanted more stimulus in the form of more tax relief.
The Republicans supported the majority view of the people. They were the populist movement on this one -- if only they understood that, and could learn how to speak.

Any wonder why Democrats are known to be the tax and spend Party? Just a little truth
February 20, 2009 - 16:56 ET by richb313I would like to interject just a little truth here. Bobby Jindal (Whose Parents are from India but was born in the US) Govenor of Louisiana did not say he would not take the Stimulus Money. He said that the State would not take the money until all the strings attached could be evaluated. He was worried that taking the money would actually end up costing Louisiana more than it would recieve which would be a disservice to the Taxpayers in Louisiana. There is nothing he can do about the increased tax burden that this bill has already put on all of us. He is just doing his job trying to protect the intrest of the citizens of Louisiana. If after the review, which will take some time as the implications of all that is included in this is understood, if they find it benifits Louisiana the state will probably take some or all of the funds. As a citizen and a supporter of Bobby Jindal I am in total agreement. We are all on the hook for this bill but if taking the money we suddenly find that we in this state actually have to come up with more state money I say pass it by. Jindal has already made huge cuts in the State Budget due to decreased tax revenues. We are doing our jobs here, I wish the rest of the country would do thiers.

February 20, 2009 - 16:55 ET by SentryDanI wonder if any of these black politicians, who love to blame whites for slavery, actually know the history of slavery in this country? I wonder if they know that more than 300,000 black men fought for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War? I wonder if they know that there were thousands of black slave owners in the South during the 1800s? I wonder if they know how easy it is to find this information?
Do these black politicians practice race baiting? Yes. Do they continue to play the victim? Yes. Contrary to Representative Clyburn's statement that the Governors of Mississippi, Texas, South Carolina, and Louisiana opposition to the porkulus bill was a slap in the face to all African-Americans and that he was insulted, the only person who insulted the African-American community was the representative himself. These people need to the give playing the race card a rest.

February 20, 2009 - 21:02 ET by ricklailThey want to make up their own history. We all know that it was rival tribes that sold them into slavery to begin with. All this crap that SC had to go through over the battle flag could have been solved if they would have flown the Bonnie Blue. I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We try to keep the history true to the real reasons of the war. Nobody wants to hear it. Can't get into the schools because of the attitudes about the South.
I had 3 great grandfathers and 1 great great grandfather who fought for the South. The great great grandfather was KIA at Bristo Station, VA. Here is something ...
February 20, 2009 - 17:16 ET by SentryDanHere is something that should make people really happy. Everyone who thinks that they are getting a tax break by having their payroll taxes decreased by $13 per week need to rethink what is actually going on. The first thing they need to understand is that the payrol taxes are social security and medicare. By giving everyone a $13 a week credit that is reducing the amount going into the Social Security Trust fund for them. Now, multiply that $13 by approximately 100 million people and that equals $1.3 billion a week. Now multiply that by 78 weeks, the length of time this is suppose to run, and you have approximately $101 billion dollars lost from the Social Security Trust Fund.
Guess what folks? That lost money will have to be paid back. So, after the 78 weeks look for the payroll taxes to be raised, to say, 10%. And remember, once the government does that, don't look for it to be reduced once the $101 billion is recouped. Ah, don't you just love Obama's porkulus bill?
Remember folks, Freedom isn't Free. It was bought with the blood and sacrifice of the men and women who are serving and who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The point is the Rep. Clyburn probably had input on certain sections of this legislation, since he's a Democrat, and knows what he wants these governors to accept. This is just another attempt, by the Democrats, to coerce people into supporting legislation that is poorly written and will not solve the problem. Realistically, America's only hope for stopping this cycle of victimhood is for educated African-American affluence to reach a point where cultural divides naturally occur.
