ABC’s Outrageous 1991 Undercover Probe of Crisis Pregnancy Centers

By Stephen Gutowski | February 18, 2011 | 15:32

A  A

Given the reactions of the left to both the Acorn and Planned Parenthood stings you might be surprised to learn that  Eyeblast.tv has uncovered a nearly identical sting, at least in terms of tactics, against crisis pregnancy centers that ABC News did back in 1991. Apparently back then the Left had zero problems with undercover video investigations aimed at proving a political point. They were also perfectly fine with showing just how much contempt they had for the “bad guys” they recorded. [Video follows page break]

In fact, Chris Wallace’s entire ABC report is drenched in condemnation and outrage. What exactly did these crisis pregnancy centers do that was so worthy of ABC’s attacks? Well, as far as I can tell, the overarching criticism is that they don’t want women to have abortions for various different reasons that ABC doesn’t agree with.

ABC didn't even show any real evidence that the crisis pregnancy centers had lied to anybody. The closest they come to doing that is when they confronts one of the crisis pregnancy center operators about one of her counselors describing the wrong abortion for the specific point in the faked pregnancy of one of the ABC producers. Essentially all of the other contentions ABC makes in the report are a matter of opinion.

More specifically ABC presented the opinions of pro-choicers and played them off as though they are fact. The number of women killed by abortions, whether abortion causes breast cancer, and how women feel after having an abortion are all hotly debated issues yet ABC presented the pro-choice position on each one as fact. The network reinforced this by continually calling the crisis pregnancy centers, and by extension their supporters, “fake”.

To any honest person who watches this ABC piece side by side with either the ACORN videos or Live Action’s investigation of Planned Parenthood, the full frontal assault ABC puts on is stunning. A supposedly objective media outlet did more editorializing on the subject of their undercover investigation than the conservatives who openly oppose the groups they investigated. It doesn’t get more biased than that.

What's more, one of the most consistent criticisms the Left has thrown at the ACORN and Planned Parenthood investigations is that they selectively or maliciously edited the tapes and must release the raw footage. In the video above, ABC admitted their investigation was done over the course of three months yet they only aired a couple of minutes on the program.

So, ABC News executives, when will you release ALL of the raw video you have from the three months in 1991 you spent going after crisis pregnancy centers.

Oh and if you have time, could you also send along any footage of your reporters expressing the same amount of outrage over ACORN and Planned Parenthood’s documented willingness to assist child sex traffickers as they did over crisis pregnancy centers desire for women to not have abortions? Thanks.

Of course, considering Brent Bozell has already exposed the fact that you coordinated with the head of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers to produce this special, I won’t hold my breath.

Chris Wallace

Submitted by iveseenitall on Fri, 02/18/2011 - 4:34pm.

What a biased report! I guess Chris Wallace is a sneak who can play both sides of the fence. Can anyone in the MSM be trusted, even those now on FOX? Do any of them have any principles at all? I guess not. What a hypocrite!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal" (progressive)

Sheree described real

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 02/18/2011 - 4:24pm.

Sheree described real abortion clinics as bloodthirsty and money-hungry.  -Wallace

They're not?

Check this out this column by Michelle Malkin from 2005.  Be sure to follow her links: i.e.  obscene profits, predatory behavior, dangerous practices.

Then read this one from last week.

Nothing changes, does it?

But they're just out to help women by providing "reproductive health care" right???

I wonder if Chris Wallace would do the same report now, 20 years later.

Counselling!

Submitted by iveseenitall on Fri, 02/18/2011 - 4:43pm.

I guess it's wrong to counsel women against having an abortion. According to Wallace's report it is. Then again, "counselling" is always a one-way street for "liberals".

Death from abortion

Submitted by wingnut55 on Fri, 02/18/2011 - 4:51pm.

It might be true that only 6 or 7 women a year die from abortion, but all the babies die from it.

My 2 Cents

Submitted by stratman on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 4:52am.

I faintly recall this story.   After watching the video and reading the article:

1)  If you go to a surgeon for their opinion you'll most likely hear you need surgery.  If you go to an internist your more likely hear some medicine is worth a try.  Yes, it is a gross oversimplification, but there is a kernel of truth to it.  PP is in the business of providing abortions.  Abortions make money, both in reimbursement/payment and in donations by the Left.  PP is not in the business of dissuading you from having an abortion.  PP is in the business of facillitating your abortion.

2)  I don't like deception an either side's part.  The clinics in the old ABC story appeared deceptive in their approach and sometimes deceptive in their practices.  I may agree with their cause but I want people to be honest.  If the deception was all editing and Chris Wallace's words, then I will eat my words.

3)  Vacuum aspirations (VA) are blind procedures - you aren't visualizing the extractor tip when it sucks out the fetus.  The abortionist is supposed to look at the "products of conception" in the catch bottle to make sure they sucked out everything.  If not, a D&C may be performed.  Because VA uses negative pressure, ie suction, it may shear off limbs and/or head from the developing fetus based on the angle of the tip, the power of the suction, and the anatomy/size of the baby.  An illustration (cartoon) of an 8 week old fetus in a mother's womb to visualize approximate size and development of the pregnancy spoken of in the ABC story.

3)  To the best of my knowledge, and after reviewing literature again, abortion does not increase the risk for breast cancer.  Breast cancer risk is increased if

  • you are white or black
  • Higher socioeconomic status
  • increasing age
  • have a first (or second) degree family member with a history of breast cancer (note - over 85% of women with breast cancer did not have a positive family history)
  • positive for BRAC1 or BRAC2 gene mutation (5-10% of breast cancers)
  • early menarche (onset of menstruation)
  • late menopause
  • nulliparity (never pregnant)
  • Late age at first pregnancy

About the only thing I can think of that could support the statement that abortion increases breast cancer risk is the research that has shown that those who never breast feed have an increased risk of breast cancer.  Even if true, no studies I am aware have stated that never breast feeding takes precedence over the other factors bulleted above.  So, whatever support there is for this position about abortion and breast cancer via the mechanism of not breast feeding is weak in the overall picture.

Additionally, and fortunately, the same holds true for women who have had miscarriages - no increased risk of breast cancer.

4) I completely agree concerning the duplicitous behavior of the Media and the Left concerning these sting operations.   The Lila Rose PP video's demonstrate criminal behavior on the part of PP employees.
