ABC Ignores Its Own Revelation That Obama Was 'Wealthy' While Paying Off Student Loans

ABC News has, thus far, ignored its own revelation that, contrary to insinuations made by Barack Obama, the then-private citizen and his wife "were making enough to be considered 'wealthy' by the president’s own definition in the years before his loans were paid off." ABC relegated this story to a posting on its website, not mentioning it on Wednesday's World News or Nightline.

The story was similarly skipped on Thursday's Good Morning America. World News did touch on student loans, but only to accuse Mitt Romney of flip-flipping on the issue. David Muir dug up a clip of the Republican telling a college student to shop around and not expect the government to bail him out.

On Tuesday, President Obama said this: "We only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago...That wasn’t that long ago. And that wasn’t easy – especially because when we had Malia and Sasha, we’re supposed to be saving up for their college educations, and we’re still paying off our college educations."

Yet, as Jon Karl explained on ABCNews.com, Obama was sometimes making over $250,000 ($272,759 in 2002). He reported:

But according to their tax returns, which are available on the White House website, the Obamas had a healthy, six-figure income by the year 2000 (the earliest return available). And for at least two years before his loans were paid off, Obama, by his own definition, made so much they were wealthy enough to pay higher taxes.

Here’s a rundown of the president’s income, according to his tax returns, in the years before he paid off his student loans:

2004: $207,647

2003: $238,327

2002: $259,394

2001: $272,759

2000: $240,505

In 2001 and 2002, the Obamas would have met the $250,000 standard the president has set for those wealthy enough to afford to pay more taxes.

It’s also notable that the Obamas didn’t claim deductions for student loans on any of those years, most likely because they made too much money to qualify for the student loan deduction.

Interesting, pertinent information, but apparently not worthy of appearing on the actual ABC network.

A partial transcript of the April 25 World News can be found below:

DAVID MUIR: And as Romney was delivering his speech, President Obama was delivering one liners on late night. Tonight, Republicans are on the attack, putting the two images side by side. The tale of two leaders, they say. The President's team will argue  it was a huge opportunity in front of a giant crowd of college students, a key demographic,  as the President pushes to keep interest rates from jumping on those college loans.

BARACK OBAMA: E-mail your member of Congress and tell them, don't double my rates. In fact, if you tweet, you can use that hash tag, #don'tdoublemyrates.

MUIR: Romney now says he agrees on that point. But this was Romney just last month When a perspective college student asked about the skyrocketing price of college.

MITT ROMNEY: The best thing I can tell you is to tell you to shop around. And to compare tuition in different places. Make sure you can get your degree in four years- or less. And don't expect the government to forgive the debt you take on. Recognize you're going to have to pay it back.

MUIR: The two candidates there with two different answers on the key issue of college loans. And, of course, young voters, a key demographic.

As soon as obama thinks he has the college vote this issue will be dead, I figure about another week. He has no intention of doing anything except babbling like a moron.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

But the Obama administration took over the college loan industry

Submitted by c5then on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 12:02pm.

The Dept. of Ed. is now a complete and total monopoly when it comes to college loans. EVERYBODY must go through their portal.

No competition means guarenteed increases in cost. Just like college tuition.

A new class warfare

Submitted by TSM on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 12:11pm.

Why does Obama somehow think it "makes it better" that he had to pay for his college with student loans versus help from his parents? Mitt Romney's father had the financial ability to pay for Romney's college education. And it's not a matter of being rich or upper-class. We are middle class and we are trying to help pay for our son's college tuition. Most of our friends have or are trying to help pay for the children's education.

On the other hand, we have friends that had saved up to pay for their children's college education, but because of lost job, they need that money to help make ends meet. Now they're helping their children apply for student loans. I think this is something Romney should address- that because it is such a bad economy, people that had saved to help their children pay for college are now using those funds to live on and are now having to rely on student loans to pay for their children's college.

I missed the chapter in the parent handbook...

Submitted by TeachertT on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 1:50pm.

that parents are obligated to help pay for children's college. So things get tough for the parents b/c of the economy, and the poor babies have to get students loans instead go to college. That is life. And since liberals will never die out completely, we are always going to have economic hard times from time to time.

Is it nice that parents can help? Sure, I am all for it. But I am not going to feel guilty if I can't help my kids go and they have to get student loans. B/c there are other things that can happen. Like in my family, our savings are going down the toilet b/c I have stage 4 colon cancer and my husband and kids would rather see me alive than have money for college. Is it fair? NO! But I am not going to go to some government person or agency to complain about it.

Just FYI, my mom gambled just about every spare dollar she could, and then some more while I was a teen. I didn't complain to anyone but my Mom. So if I wanted a college education, I found a way to do it. Mostly through student loans. Because I wasn't poor enough, I wasn't smart enough, wasn't a minority, or even know the right people at union hall I guess, to get any scholarships. I did get 2 pell grants (which were paid back.) because I was studying education. Took 10 years to pay back, but I did it without the help of my parents. During college I held 3 part-time jobs to support myself. It can be done. I am the first college graduate in the entire family line. Something I am extremely proud of.

My husband's story is similar, but was 1 of 5 kids in the family. Money could only be spread so far.

It's a very cynical, almost sociopathic tactic to use.

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 12:12pm.

DOEd's monopoly on most student loans will end up in another bubble just like the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae mortgage bubble. No way can this amount of debt be sustained on the very cynical proposals that Obama is putting forth.

It is shocking that half of all new college graduates will be unable to find a job for some time. Even more shocking that "10% of their 'disposable' income" means 10% of NOTHING in payback. The educrats, particularly the burnt-outs and leftist fringe in academia absolutely love this proposition, because it means they can continue to enjoy the life while tuition and fees just go up without limit and funded by the taxpayer credit card and hundreds of thousands of students and their parents paying for an education that will give them nothing in return. Their economic prospects are so limited that I wonder if college is even worth it for most students unless they intend to go into a health care or other profession requiring years of formal classroom training and on the job training.

It remains to be seen whether college students will be as gullible as they were the last time around when they voted for that narcissistic economic disaster. They can't remain in college/graduate school forever, and at some point they will have to enter the economic reality that their degrees in Sanskrit Lesbian Studies are worthless except as wall decorations and payments for the rest of their lives. With all of the "transparency" and "truth" Obatears keeps shouting about, he certainly is more than willing to lie to college students like a conman to a mark.

Another consequunce of the DOEd's monopoly

Submitted by Radical1979 on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 12:28pm.

I believe the DOEd will start telling students which schools they can go to, all in the name of diversity. Not outright, but loans to certain schools will not be approved for students in some socio economic areas, while urban areas will be allowed to go to those schools.

Yes, I may be paranoid, but with the control Obama wants to exert over us I don't think it's farfetched at all.

Boy Baraka went to a very

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 12:23pm.

Boy Baraka went to a very pricey high school over here in Asia, and he purportedly also attended some very pricey colleges, allthough some of that 'urban legend' hasn't been proven yet. There is also evidence that he was financed by some Arabic funding, as well as..............William Ayer's parents??? And who else??? As for any of this student loans............under what name did he use to borrow them?? Under what citizenship?? Under what SS number?? And he's apparantly never had much of an employement career either - although he seems to be doing pretty well, despite his avoidence of actually working for a living.

And since he himself was crowing about taking over the student loan business a couple of years ago, and also the fact that his cohorts in the Democrat party are the ones who initiated this increase in costs - what the hell is he flapping his purple lips about anyway??? Oh, sorry....................rhetorical question.............he KNOWS that it will be reported exactly as he wants it to be reported - by the MSM and StateRun Media.

Tuition is the problem

Submitted by Scott @ Engage ... on Thu, 04/26/2012 - 4:15pm.

Obama's plan does nothing to stop the long term problems of the cost of attending college, which has increased 439 percent since 1982—faster than the rate of health care increases (eng.am/v5unNG). Federal subsidies incentivize colleges to raise tuition because students can now afford these higher rates, which then leads students to demand more student loans.
