Joe Scarborough Proclaims: 'Of Course' Rick Perry 'Can't Get Elected'

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough shifted into psychic mode on Wednesday, flat-out declaring, "Of course, [Rick Perry] can't get elected in the general election. He can't." The Morning Joe host derided the GOP presidential candidate, even predicting what states Perry would lose and by how much.

Scarborough totally dismissed the Texas governor's chances, ripping, "He can get elected in the Republican primary, but he can't get elected in the general election. The ex-Congressman turned cable host was very specific: "...He can't carry Ohio. He can't carry Pennsylvania."

[See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Despite Perry not even having won the nomination and the general election being 15 months out, Scarborough insisted that the Republican "can't carry Iowa."

The MSNBC anchor even went so far as to prognosticate by just how much Perry would lose the above state by: "He'll lose by 12, 13 points in Iowa in the general election."

It should be pointed out that, according to Gallup, Barack Obama's job approval is at a record low of 38 percent. Real Clear Politics gives the President a mere three point edge over Perry.

A transcript of the August 31 exchange follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

6:47am EDT

DONNY DEUTSCH: Let's say Rick Perry does get the nomination and he's- Can he carry Florida and Ohio? Can a guy like that carry Florida, Pennsylvania, those states?

JOE SCARBOROUGH: He can carry Florida. He can carry Florida, possibly.

DEUTSCH: Even with the ponzi scheme? Social Security?

SCARBOROUGH: He can possibly carry Florida, but he can't carry Ohio. He can't carry Pennsylvania.

DEUTSCH: Well, then he can't get elected.

SCARBOROUGH: Of course, he can't get elected in the general election. He can't. He can get elected in the Republican primary, but he can't get elected in the general election.

MIKE BARNICLE: He is, potentially, a gift for President Obama.

DEUTSCH: Let's play it out for a second though. Because, I didn't think he'd- He can carry Florida. He can carry North Carolina, definitely.

SCARBOROUGH: Yep. And he can carry Virginia.

DEUTSCH: Okay. And Iowa.

SCARBOROUGH: No. He can't carry Iowa.

DEUTSCH: No.

SCARBOROUGH: He'll lose by 12, 13 points in Iowa in the general election.

DEUTSCH: Okay. Okay. Because this election, let's say it is him and Obama is more clearly defined as, where, basically, the swing states even get narrower and narrower. So, if you do the electoral math-

SCARBOROUGH: The numbers don't add up.

DEUTSCH: Florida, North Carolina, what else does he-

SCARBOROUGH: Listen, the bottom line is, it comes down to the Midwest states, Florida and then New Mexico and Arizona, Nevada have come into play. I don't know. I have got a blind spot on Rick Perry in the southwest. I don't know how he would do there, his neighbor in Texas. I do know in the Midwest battle states, you go from Michigan to Ohio. He may win Indiana, which Obama carried last time. But, he'll get absolutely savaged in the suburb of Philadelphia and Bucks County.

...
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: And the Republican field is just pathetic.

Political Idiot

Submitted by Texndoc on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 1:56pm.

This douchebag forever was saying Charlie Crist was going to sweep into office on a politically popular "INDEPENDENT" (No Labels!) wave. The Morning Joe panel refused to acknowledge Marco Rubio until literally 2-3 days before the election when every poll said Marco Rubio was going to win. And then if Rubio was mentioned it was always quickly glossed over as an afterthought "oh, looks like Rubio will win Florida, now on to Nevada....".

The show is unwatchable for me. Mika Boobinski has ventured into self-parody. So ridiculous that she is nothing more that a "I HATE the Republicans!" hate machine that Scarborough just mocks.

Because he is a moron and that fact will never be more pronounced than when he squares off to debate Obama 3 times. Game over. The people that think Perry is a viable candidate are probably the same crop of folks that thought Sharon Angle and Christine "I'm not a Witch" O'Donnell were viable candidates. Our most important task as republicans at this point is to ensure that Obama never serves a second term. Ideological purity must be set aside.

And to answer someone else's question, I think Romney and Huntsman could easily defeat Obama.

Submitted by FAR52 on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 3:11pm.

A "full of hate" candidate will most certainly cost us the election. There are a ton of independent/moderate voters out there that pulled the lever for Obama last time, but are now looking for a reasonable republican alternative they can support. If we nominate a Perry-type candidate, they will run back into the welcoming arms of Obama. It's just that simple.

We can't win with the base alone. As soon as we nominate our candidate, the MSM will put on a full court press in favor of The One We Have Been Waiting For. You know that will happen. If we nominate someone that can easily be labeled as unserious, not smart, kind of crazy, and has lots and lots of past quotes to back up those assertions, the middle will vote for Obama. He will get the left and the middle. We will get the right. Game over. Obama wins.

Oh, please. That is a pathetic piece of "analysis" (and I use the term loosely). Winning the base alone? Are you so arrogant that you'd take the base's support for granted like that? Get something straight, in the very unlikely event that the Republican Party defecates Jon Huntsman as its nominee, it can forget the base. Why? Because most of us have endured your type of Republican in power (Schwarzenegger, Crist, Huntsman, Romney, Bush's 2nd term...) and will not tolerate it anymore. There would be so little distinction on important matters of policy between the Republican and Obama that it's not worth bothering to vote.

It's so predictable how you "No Labels"/Frum Forum-types always trot out the "'moderate'/'swing voters' will run away from X conservative and back into the arms of an outright Marxist failure, prolonging the misery, because they're "uncomfortable" with how the media portrays X conservative" cliche. Are you people really so soft, so unprincipled and so shallow that you'll support 4 more years of abject incompetence to spare yourself the indignity of defending Perry's "dropped g"s at cocktail parties? There's already a party for you and your ilk...the Democrat Party.

NO R candidate will be acceptable to the D's/msm. They will pound/smear/etc. the R's, even Huntsman.

The difference this time I think will be in embarrassed 1st timers in '08 sitting this one out. About 1 1/2 years in, the 1st generation Latino I know {he lived with us for that time period} went from "Yes we can" to "Oops, I'll never do that {vote like it's IDOL} again"!!!

Will those voters vote R this time? *He* just might. Now that he understands what's going on and has a family to support.

I've said it before - those I's are NOT independent. They are ignorant. They know just enough to follow the herd, and since the msm has the horses and lassos...

You've met him, when?

You are comparing a long time politician (not that i like that), with newcomers. You are saying Perry, who has not even stumbled some "ums" that i've seen in his meet-and-greets, will lose a debate with the teleprompter? Obama barely held his own against a nearly senile McCain.

I don't know 100% about Perry yet, so i won't say he would be great, but i do know that he would destroy Obama in an open debate. Of course, that won't happen. If the GOP candidate is anyone with 1/2 a brain, the MSM and Obama camp will wrap so many rules around the debate that Obama will be able to script it, and to leave his teleprompter there to do it for him.

As for Romney... i'll give you the dirty little secret that the left knows, and why they want him as the GOP candidate. Some on the evangelical right will NOT vote for him. Oh, they won't vote for Obama either, but they won't vote. Like it or not, a small, but not insignificant, voting block on the right thinks that LDS is a cult, I know, i was married to one for awhile. They potentially number a couple of percent, which could be enough for the TOTUS to keep his office.

Perry "grows on you" like fungus?

Submitted by lrgon on Thu, 09/01/2011 - 1:20am.

The Texs Governor signed a "hate crimes" bill that enhances penalties for crimes committed against a certain class of people.

Isn't justice supposed to be blind? The courts are to treat all crime equally and render punishment according to the crime? that's the way it once operated in Texas but Perry Obamanized the laws of Texas before there was an Obama on the national scene.

Perry gave the usual politican's drivel: "As the Governor of our diverse state, in all matters it is my desire to seek common ground for the common good. In the end, we are all Texans and we must be united as we walk together into the future. ... With my signature today, Texas now has stronger criminal penalties against crime motivated by hate.

President Obama signed a similar law, and the Texas statute signed by Perry does effectively establish a special “protected class” status including enhanced sentencing for crimes allegedly motivated by bias against it.

And the thing about the border situation, he made a good point that there needed to be more boots on the ground, not just a big fence because someone will just build a bigger ladder.  And the amnesty thing, from what I read, he was referring to the students who were in this country legally (I have a friend who has one working for him), has a visa, obeyed the laws and were treated like any other citizen.  I really couldn't find anything about him granting some kind of amnesty to illegals or words to that effect and of course, illegals will be deported(as is happening now).

Submitted by Marsh on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 3:49pm.

"he was referring to the students who were in this country legally"

Wrong. They just had to be students who attended 3 years of a Texas high school. Nothing about them being here legally. They could have jumped the border with their parents when they  were 13 and they would be eligible for in state tuition just as long as they attended the 3 years of school.

"haven't heard anyone refute that it had included a parental opt out if parents objected to it. "

First of all he issued an executive order for the inoculations in order to avoid a likely veto by the legislature. An Obama like move if I've ever heard of one.

And parents just couldn't opt out. They had to file an affidavit to get permission to opt out. He was making guinea pigs of  sixth grade girls with a vaccine that had just gone on the market.

And here's the opt out part in that file:

Parents’ Rights. The Department of State Health Services will, in order to protect the right of parents to be the final authority on their children’s health care, modify the current process in order to allow parents to submit a request for a conscientious objection affidavit form via the Internet while maintaining privacy safeguards under current law.

I do not see where it gives a penalty for not doing the vaccine.

And yes, the order regarding the vaccine got overridden by the Texas Legislature and he accepted it. He might have some good ideas or bad ideas, but he accepts the final results when the people speaks.

Try comparing that to the manchild that ignores the people such as Obamacare. And if he can't get something through the legal means such as the US Legislature, he overrides them by executive order and Congress for some reason doesn't see fit to override him. Case in point, the DREAM act.

Newsmax, Fox News(as long as they aren't repeating the above like AP which they do sometimes), and even some of the links on Drudge are a bit questionable(on occasion).  I trust Rush on many things but sometimes I had to question him when at the beginning, he didn't believe that Soetoro was hurting this country by design but he'll give his view on some news article or event.  So sometimes even the more reliable ones had to be questioned.  There are some others I can't remember the names of at the moment.

Ok,I must be missing something because of the executive order I read, the vaccine thing was not forced on people like some people are saying was happening.

I'm not trying to be some kinda cheerleader for Perry, but what are people seeing that I apparently seem to be missing?  I mean, even Tom Tancredo was busting on Perry about it, referencing a speech Perry did in 2007 which I looked at and I didn't see anything about him helping illegals unless I somehow missed it.  Was there another speech that Perry gave about that subject?

The Trans corridor thing keeps getting brought up, even though it's a dead issue, he said it's a dead issue, so why are people still trying to hammer him over that?

I'm also not trying to be deliberately dense about this, apparently some of you on here believe these things and I want to understand why when I see it to the contrary.

And regardless of whatever these issues are, is it truly worse than the Muslim in Chief we have sowing the Arab Spring discord in the middle east and has placed us in greater danger in so many ways than before?

The TTC was proclaimed dead two years ago by nearly every public official; however, Texas Governor Rick Perry declared at the time, "We'll build it, but we'll just change the name." Now the Corridor, which has always been the cynosure of Perry's transportation policy, is getting a new push.

State Representative Larry Phillips has introduced H.B. 3789, one of several related bills affecting infrastructure — a reincarnation of the old legislation that enabled the Corridor projects, but without the old name.

The Lord said none are so blind as those who will not see. The truth is staring at you right in the face.

Good to hear from someone Perry serves. AMEN to the attitude/principle of listening to the people. What I have seen and read so far about Perry has me hopeful. I just got done reading his book.

Thanks for your post~

Joe needs to remember that BO

Submitted by Maestroh on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 1:15pm.

Joe needs to remember that BO is no longer an empty suit with no record; he is now an empty suit with a terrible economic record.

Besides:

Johnson was as good as in in 67;
Ford was a goner in 75 (lost by 2 points)
Reagan was too conservative in 79;
Bush couldn't lose in 91
Clinton was a toss-up in 95;
Gore was a shoo-in in 99;
And Hillary was going to best Rudi in 2007 - we all know how that ended

This from a man that claims to be conservative (RINO) and could only find a paying job with the liberal talking heads at MSNBC. He was never very conservative before joining the DNC propaganda site, and has been working very hard to become a liberal elitist ever since.

Why would anyone believe anything he ahas to say?

I don't care for Joe but he

Submitted by buddyc on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 2:40pm.

I don't care for Joe but he is probably correct.

Bachman, Palin, and Romney all have a better chance than Perry. He is the right guy at the wrong time. I loved W but the last 2-3 years he never seemed to try to sell or defend his agenda. His popularity suffered from his coasting and lack of consideration of other republicans who were left to eplain and support his 8 years.

Electing another republican governor from Texas after W being as unpopular as he was and still is, will be VERY DIFFICULT no matter how qualified Perry is. It is simply to soon. I can't believe Republicans would ignore this. It will translate into a 5-8% hit in the election results. Perry should have waited for 2016 or 2020.

unfortunately this sort of "branding" does work for people who are too lazy to think for themselves. I have a close relative that said (on the day Perry announced) "I don't want another Texas idiot for President" and although he had no idea who he was or what he stood for - that was enough.

Perry Can't Win Pennsylvania

Submitted by ckc1227 on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 8:55pm.

But so what? He doesn't need to win Pennsylvania. He doesn't even need to win Iowa. All he has to do is win the same states that Bush won, and Pennsylvania wasn't one of them. Iowa was, but he still would have one if hadn't carried it.

Ohio, on the other hand, is a biggie.

Pathetic, eh?

Submitted by Superman on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 9:19pm.

Well first of all, Joe Scarborough is a RINO so it's not a surprise to hear him bash the Republican front runner who happens to be very conservative. As for Mika Brzezinski saying that the Republican candidates are "pathetic", well, that just further exposes Mika's liberal bias and Obama water carrying. Also, I don't think the Republican candidates are "pathetic" when they are beating Obama in the polls.

The "front runner who happens to be very conservative?"

Submitted by lrgon on Thu, 09/01/2011 - 2:03pm.

Give me a break. Perry is as conservative as Algore whose boots he was licking back in 88 when the algore ran for president.

George H.W. Bush called Gore the "ozone man," back in the eighties!

And this guy from Texas that lied to the nation that if he ran for president it would be God's doing not his. Who in the world can trust a man who uses God to further his own personal ambitions but a politician who one year is for turning Texas BLUE and the next claims to want to try Bernanke for treason!

Well, he's got one guy fooled - the guy who uses a moniker from a comic book.
