MSNBC Touts 'Reasonable' Obama on Birth Certificate, Gregory Chides 'Low-Minded' RNC Chairman

Meet the Press host David Gregory on Wednesday derided the Republican National Committee Chairman as "low-minded" for his response to the release of Barack Obama's long-form birth certificate. Jansing and Co. guest host Savannah Guthrie lauded the President for looking "like the most reasonable man in Washington."

Appearing just minutes after the President completed a press conference on the release, Gregory responded to a statement by Chairman Reince Priebus which both dismissed birtherism and attacked Obama for playing up the issue. The NBC host opined that the Republican operative was both "high-minded and low-minded at the same time."

After complimenting Priebus for dismissing the issue, he scolded, "...To somehow blame the President for seeking to distract the country through this birth certificate issue seems to be well off the mark."

[Video of Jansing's quote can be found below.]

It didn't seem to occur to the journalist that the job of a political party's chairman is, simply, to attack. Reporters are not often quick to slam the head of the DNC.

Gregory appeared eager to repeat the White House talking points on how the birther issue plays out now: "In this case, [Obama's] quote, 'We do not have time for this kind of silliness.' That was the President this morning. What he's campaigning against now is silliness." (MP3 audio here.)

Guthrie eagerly agreed with this new spin, touting, "...That is the sweet spot as far as the White House is concerned. Any time, in any context, where the President looks like the most reasonable man in Washington, that's the space they're trying to occupy."

A transcript of the segment, which aired at 10:15am EDT on April 27, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: We have some developing news, the RNC chairman, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus,  has released a statement, quote "As I repeatedly stated, this issue is a distraction. Our economy is strained from out of control deficits, debt and unsustainable entitlements. The President ought to spend his time getting serious about repairing our economy working with Republicans and focusing on the long-term stability of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Unfortunately his campaign politics and talk about birth certificates is distracting him from our number priority, our economy. " Let me get to David Gregory. That's an interesting statement. On the one hand, the Republican National Committee Chairman saying there's nothing to this issue and at the same time laying it at feet of the President as though he has created this issue. We can hasten to remind folks that about 45 percent of Republicans in a recent New York Times poll said they questioned whether the President was born in this country. David, your thoughts this morning?

DAVID GREGORY: Well, Chairman Priebus was high-minded and low-minded at the same time. I mean, to come out and dismiss this as a distraction was, I think, a responsible thing to do as a leader in the Republican Party. But then to somehow blame the President for seeking to distract the country through this birth certificate issue seems to be well off the mark. Look, there's a couple of considerations here and you've been talking about it. The White House going back to the campaign realized that this was something that was going to be fueled by conspiracy people. The short form wasn't enough, as you point out. I've talked to somebody inside the White House who said they had to get the waiver from Hawaii to get that long form out there. They made the decision along the way to dismiss this, not to the put this out, not to dignify it. The President told our colleague Brian Williams in an interview, "Look I'm not going to walk around with my birth certificate plastered to my forehead."

His words. Then they obviously made a decision citing the poll you mentioned, our polling, too, indicating nearly five in ten Republicans question or believed the President was born outside the United States. They see Donald Trump out there getting media attention around this issue and think this is a distraction. It's getting too much traction at the wrong time. Let's come out and do something about it. You can question whether they should have done something then, doing something now, they obviously want to put it to bed. Joe Lockhart made an interesting statement in the last segment, which is as politician, as a president, you want to campaign and pivot off someone, campaign against someone or something.

In this case, his quote, "We do not have time for this kind of silliness." That was the President this morning. What he's campaigning against now is silliness. He's saying to independent voters, "Look, these guys on the right, they're going to get distracted with the silliness. They're going to pay attention to Donald Trump. I'm focusing on your gas prices. I'm focused on cutting government spending." I think that's where he wanted to take advantage of if he was going to make the late decision to put all this out, I think he wanted to use it for maximum impact.

GUTHRIE: Yeah. Indeed. You really put your finger on it, David, because, of course, that is the sweet spot as far as the White House is concerned. Any time, in any context, where the President looks like the most reasonable man in Washington, that's the space they're trying to occupy. Let me turn to Chuck Todd.

Is all this to distract from the Fed press conference about how the Fed is ruining the currency and economy? Just wondering. What are we not supposed to look at?

if he was concerned, he would have addressed the issue when Hillery brought it up....he knew it was a nice misdirection play....funny how he allowed Trump to play him, though...if it's that easy, perhaps the Donald won't have as much trouble dispatching this impostor as people think....I also find it interesting that, with so many other problems ruling the day, obama would decide to come out of the closet with this trivia....shoot, the next thing you know he'll declare he's a Muslim....

Let's Not Forget

Submitted by Bourbeau on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 1:56pm.

This whole issue regarding the birth certificate was created and driven by a man (and his handlers) who refused to make it available for over three years, since he threw his hat into the ring, and further perpetrated this sense of non-transparency by refusing to release any numbers of other documents the press and others have asked for (e.g. his scholastic records). Hence, for David Gregory, or that half-wit Chris Jansing to criticize anyone other then the President is totally disengenuous. And one more thing, please David, tell us why anyone running for President shouldn't be required to produce certain documentation to ensure they have met all requirements set forth by the constitution.

What a joke...

Submitted by Hologram5 on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 2:12pm.

This document is NOT a birth certificate. Anyone with half a brain can read at the top Certificate of Live Birth. This is the same form that was released earlier. A REAL birth certificate is black with white lettering and on the back is the babies footprints. I have one, so does every American born in this country. Another distraction by the king of carnivals and his sideshow wife.

"A REAL birth certificate is black with white lettering and on the back is the babies footprints."

I have my original birth certificate, which, coincidentally, also says "Certificate of Live Birth," and it's white with black lettering and there's NO footprints on it at all (the doctor's signature, interestingly enough, is green. Which, I guess, was the color of the ink that was in the pen that he held at the time he signed it.).

Here in Minnesota at least, they stopped inking the newborn's feet and pressing them on the birth certificate one year before I was born (my sister, who's a little more than a year older than me had those footprints, in red ink, well, pink actually (pink is for girls, blue is for boys), on her certificate, and those footprints are located on the front, at the bottom.). I was born in March, 1961, six months before Obama was born. Does that mean that I'm not a natural born citizen? And how about my children?  None of them have their footprints on their Certificate of Live Birth (commonly referred to as a "Birth Certificate"), nor are those original documents black with white lettering. Does this mean that they, too, are not natural born citizens?

I also have a certified copy (several actually) of that birth certificate and THEY are black with white lettering.  But that's only because they are a magnified copy of a microfiche image of that original certificate, so, of course, it would be a negative image of the original document as that is how they STORED those records, a negative image on microfiche, back in the 60's.

Let's dispense with the silliness. And not forget that the repubs are only looking for a distraction. FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS! Why didn't you produce the damn thing earlier? And speaking of distractions, why would the repubs want any distractions? They want to FOCUS on your ineptness, not distract attention from it. It's the ones in power that want distractions, something you and your administration excels at.

As for what the actual birth certificate should look like, every state is different, and each state changes their documents periodically. What is needed is a proven genuine BIRTH certificate (not "certificate of live birth) from the same year and same state for comparison purposes. Then, and only then, will this issue be put to rest.

Of course, if and when the birth certificate issue goes away, there will be the issues of college transcripts (to prove your touted "intellectual" status) as well as tuition information so we, the American people, will know how a poor mixed race individual like yourself got to go to Haaarvaaard...

Fess em up or shut up. And, for God's sake, quit blaming everyone else for everything that goes wrong in your pitiful life. I know you're an ultra-liberal democrat, but cut us all some slack...

For the benefit of Jer, I AM

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 4:16pm.

For the benefit of Jer, I AM SATISFIED that Obama was born here, proof has been shown.

NOW RELEASE THE SEALED UNIVERSITY DOCUMENTS, I.E. GRADES AND STUDENT LOAN PAPERS AND THE SURRENDER OF HIS LICENSE TO PRACTICE LAW AND WE ARE DONE WITH OBAMA'S OBSESSIVE SECRECY. I don't trust public officials who arrogantly engage in the appearance of impropriety. As a representative of the PEOPLE you should have your cards on the table and NO ONE SHOULD NEED TO PROD YOU TO DO IT. The fact Obama had to be prodded for 3 years gets him only a 1/2 point and that's starting from - 1 for not being up front in the first place on the birth certificate issue.

As score stands now:
-1/2 point for failure to timely present the birth certificate and causing division because of it.
- 1 point for failure to timely present his university grades since his followers are claiming he's smarter than W and Obama clearly approved of it since Sir Paul said it in his presence.
- 1 point for failure to unseal his university student loan paperwork.
- 1 point for failure to unseal the circumstances of him surrendering his license to practice law.
-10 points for being arrogant about the whole affair

Total = - 13 1/2 points on the appearance of impropriety scale.

You cannot just throw out one liners based on lib talking points rather than facts.

When W left office after 8 yrs, we had a 3.9 Trillion deficit. After less than 3 yrs, at the end of 2011, your hero will have created a 14.3 Trillion deficit. And his plan is to keep on spending

Hey libs, as long as you play

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 7:53pm.

Hey libs, as long as you play these games, we are willing to play. Obama's Obsessive Secrecy must end and this is the only way it will occur - full and complete disclosure. Tell your fearless leader to buck it up, act like a man and take his lumps since he was such an arrogant snot in the first place.

Oh please, no more liberal tropes about W, it was liberals who doubled up on the budget deficit each year they took power of Congress in January 2007. It was their irresponsible spending and insistence on the drilling ban who screwed the country with high oil rates world wide and thus also the poor of the world. They screwed the poor. It was liberals who engineered the mortgage debacle and your Lord Obama who as lawyer for ACORN forced Citibank to make unsound loans to people who couldn't pay them. In other words, they screwed the poor by destroying their credit ratings. Nice people. It was your Lord Obama's friends, Franklin Raines and Rahm Emanuel who at Freddie and Fannie who set the terms of the mortgages they would buy from the banks. It was these two crooks who LIED to the rating agencies about the credit worthiness of the debt they were selling on the open market to money center banks. They LIED to AIG who insured those bundled mortgages. That's why the Dems went along with bailing them all out. Your buddy Chuck Schumer started the run on IndyBank which started the dominos falling causing bank after bank to collapse. yeap, your buddies the liberal Democrats caused a huge mess which we all now have to pay and pay and pay and our children as well. Thanks alot.

Submitted by tombaker on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 6:45pm.

this image shows what was handed out to reporters....it clearly shows how the conversion to the PDF created the layers http://kbmt.images.worldnow.com/images/14523440_SS.jpg

Nice trap....for all the people claiming that the layers mean this or that. Its a low grade scan, which introduced the interim versions for OCR. What was handed out to reporters shows the original.

This is simply a trap to continue conspiracy theories. I make no remarks on this except for all the stuff about "layers", other issues about restricting access to all his college work, seem excessive for any person.

FWIW it was very hard to find a high quality image of the black and white handout.

Wrong name for hospital

Submitted by celator on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 8:55pm.

Just a wee problem with the name of the hospital on Obama's birth certificate. According to the hospital's own website, it was never named:
"Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital".

In 1961, it was called: Kauikeolani Children's Hospital.

In 1978, it was called: Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children after it merged with Kapi‘olani Maternity Home.

Whoopsie.

Good grief, can't these people get anything right.

Yes, you are correct but you know, I think we have beaten this horse until it is dead. Now the issue is Obama's needless pathological Obsessive secrecy.

Correction, you are NOT correct as to the name of the hospital used on birth certificates. While it would seem that way, however in practice what is on Obama's birth certificate is the CORRECT NAME. See this link for the Nordyke twins who were born at the same hospital of the same month. http://www.biasedmediaboycott.com/index.php?topic=80.0
