MSNBC's Chris Matthews Smears Tea Partiers: Only Interested in Cutting Spending on the Poor
According to MSNBC's Chris Matthews, "the only cuts that [Tea Partiers] seem to want are the cuts for the poor people." The Hardball host smeared the conservative protesters on Thursday while discussing planned reforms to Medicare and Medicaid.
Guest Jonathan Alter laughed at Matthews' attack, prompting the anchor to mock, "You're laughing because you know how right-wingers think."
Citing a Washington Post poll showing 52 percent of Tea Partiers support cutting Medicaid, he prompted the former Newsweek editor, "...Strong, zealous Tea Party people have brought themselves to willingness to cut poor people. That doesn't surprise me, but your thoughts."
Alter predicted doom for the Republicans who supported Paul Ryan's reform plan, hyperbolically asserting, "A lot of them slit their own throats by voting this bill."
A partial transcript of the April 20 segment, which aired at 5:38pm EDT, follows:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let's take a look at the Tea Party numbers. The Washington Post/ABC poll found that only 43 percent of Tea Partiers are strong supporters, a majority of them against it, and 30 percent of general Tea Partiers want to cut Medicare. But you look at these numbers on the other side, 69 percent of Tea Partiers against these cuts in Medicare. It's so interesting. I was thinking- what do you think of this, the Tea Partiers?
SUSAN PAGE: Well, it means that they're just like everybody else, right? They do want a smaller government. They want cuts in federal spending. The deficit and the debt are the things that really sparked the Tea Party movement, big government. But when it comes down to a program that just about every family in America benefits from, they don`t want anything done to it.
MATTHEWS: Well, the only cuts that they seem to want are the cuts for the poor people. And you have a modest majority, 52- [Alter laughs.] You're laughing because you know how right-wingers think.
JONATHAN ALTER: Well-
MATTHEWS: They don't mind cutting the poor people who get Medicaid.
ALTER: But what's so interesting about this-
MATTHEWS: If you- Look at that- 52 percent-
ALTER: Yes.
MATTHEWS: -a modest majority of Tea Partiers, strong, zealous Tea Party people, have brought themselves to willingness to cut poor people. That doesn't surprise me, but your thoughts.
ALTER: Well, I think what's interesting about that is they assume that those are poor people who are not seniors, or I don't know who they think those poor people are.
MATTHEWS: Well, you know, a lot of them are on long-term care.
ALTER: But a lot of them- a lot of them are their parents.
MATTHEWS: Yes, on long-term care.
ALTER: Because the way it works in this country is that, yes, when you get old, you draw down your- your net worth, so that you're eligible for Medicaid, and it will pay for the nursing home. So if the Ryan plan, what is now the Republican plan, if that were to become the law of the land, and you block-granted Medicaid, which would essentially gut Medicaid, under this Republican program, what you would have is large numbers of seniors who would move- move from the nursing home into their children's home, into the den-
MATTHEWS: Yeah.
ALTER: -maybe one of their kids' bedrooms, because there wouldn't be the money anymore to have them have nursing home care. So, these are some of the implications of this bill that was passed in this ideological frenzy that people have not yet fully understood. And I think once the details filter down, the implications of the Ryan plan filter down, you're going to see real hell to pay for Republicans in swing districts. A lot of them slit their own throats by voting this bill.
MATTHEWS: Susan?
PAGE: And, you know, Jonathan says people aren't yet aware about all the details in the Ryan plan.
MATTHEWS: Seniors are, I think.
PAGE: But they will when they're in a re-election campaign.
ALTER: Right.
MATTHEWS: I think a 65-year-old person or people are aware of the fact that the reason they like Medicare, and everybody likes it, Republican, right, left and center is one it, likes it, because it means for the first time in your life, somebody is paying the bills for you. And you can't afford to pay them when you get older.

Obfuscating as usual, why would one need food stamps, etc, if you liberals weren't so busy causing people to lose their jobs and more importantly NOT create any new ones. 7 million people lost their jobs and STILL can't find work and all you MSM types continue to blame the unemployed by claiming they GAVE UP looking. Dirtbags!
Stop opposing oil and natural gas drilling and thousands of thousands of high paying jobs will be immediately created thus causing tax revenues to increase. NO! but you insist on raising taxes on those left with jobs instead of creating new jobs.
By Obama's own admission there are billions in government waste, fraud and abuse and YET you insist we the taxpayer pay MORE to compensate for his own laziness in not stopping it, yet you turds will NOT address the issue but blame the Tea Party for refusing to fork over more money to waste.

The "poor' do not lack the ability to foresee how the current administrations fiscal failures and counter productive policy's will effect them in the future, and has brought mass unemployment and cuts over the last few years.
This is where this clueless little man insults the poor, he believes they are so dense due to their income level or lack of that they can be manipulated into believing what is not truth, and have not the ability to comprehend or figure out cause and effect.
The almost 50 million on food stamps today, dose he believe they all are uneducated and unaware?
Matthews swings around the poor as if they were some unintelligent product in need of his phony guardianship .
Perhaps had the Tea Party not been tuned out and shot down as the enemy their message now echoed by many would have prevented the poor from having to welcome even more poor among them, further stretching already limited benefits and resources.
Instead Matthews like most of his media have an unquestioned child like awe and thrill in advocating, cheerleading policys and a administration that breeds poverty then claim it's everyone elses fault the country can't afford to take care of them all.

So Obama says Paul Ryan's budget "isn't particularly courageous."
Really???? Does the president have the courage to tackle exploding entitlement programs?
No, he doesn't. He'd rather keep insisting that we can solve this messand no one will have to sacrifiec, if we just increase taxes on the rich.
Because he really doesn't care about anything but his re-election. He can't see any further than November 2012.

conservatives want to cut all entitlements. We want the poor to work and pay their own way instead of selling their votes for a welfare check and food stamps.

This is what happens when you let the liar in the WH get away with calling tax rate reductions "spending in the tax code". Now, they can conflate cutting welfare spending with tax rate reductions as "spending", and continue the lie that supports their class warfare agenda.

Submitted by buddyc on Thu, 04/21/2011 - 5:16pm.
It was democrats who cut spending for the food programs to the teachers unions and to make one more installment on the 2010 election contributions. Did they care about the poor?
We are now spending our great grandchildren's money. We have gone through our money and our children's money. Who is going to speak for our starving grand children. The government will be broke.
Take a look at California to see how the democrats care about the poor. They are cutting programs right and left so that they can keep making public employee union payroll, benefit and retirement payments. Schools are closing, parks are closing. Welfare programs are being cut. Food and health programs cut. Do California liberals care about the poor?
Matthews is ignorant. The only people the democrats care about are the people who contribute the money to get them elected. They own the blacks and don't care about them (See elimination of vouchers in DC and refusal to fire incompetent teachers), they don't care about hispanics (see immigration reform) and they don't care about the young (see cut backs to education and failure to deal with the cause of education failure).

Who gave the billions to foreign banks? Who gave billions to FRIENDS on Wall Street? Who has pissed away billions on GM and GE? How routinely gives out $100 million grants for "green jobs" to companies who have about 100 employees?

"...30% of Tea Partiers support cutting Medicare"
And more than 50% of Tea Partiers are seniors on Medicare. If Matthews had a clue, he'd understand that what these Tea Party seniors want is less spending, so that their grandchildren won't be saddled with massive debt.
The most effective approach the GOP can take in the 2012 elections would be to keep pointing out the fact that Obama and the Dems are racking up trillions in debt that America's youth will have to pay for. The GOP needs to lay this debt issue out in terms that even any 18 year old can comprehend: Your share of Obama's debt is XX hundreds of thousands of dollars. You'll never be able to retire, buy a house, or even buy a car. Your share of the federal debt will be so massive you'll never be able to pay it off.
