Anti-Reagan Media Now Lecturing Conservatives on 'Appropriating' His Legacy, ABC Mocks 'Church of Reagan'

By Scott Whitlock | February 07, 2011 | 13:51

Ronald Reagan endured harsh, vitriolic rhetoric from journalists throughout his career, but that hasn't stopped some in the media from lecturing present-day conservatives on who best represents the legacy of the 40th President. This occurred even as the country celebrated Reagan's 100th birthday.

On Saturday's World News, John Berman filed a sarcastic report where he knocked 2012 hopefuls for trying to align themselves with the former President: "There is Reagan Airport, the Reagan Building, the Reagan Library. Then there is the church of Reagan, where candidates worship."

He critiqued, "In fact, you might say there is a Republican primary and a Reagan primary. Who can be the most Reagan-y?" Andrea Mitchell appeared on Meet the Press and fretted, "People are trying- Republicans in particular, obviously- trying to appropriate Ronald Reagan for their own political purposes now."

Earlier, on Sunday's Today, Mitchell lectured conservatives about what Reagan would say today: "He would be absolutely appalled at the state of our politics, at the sort of vile rhetoric, at the inability of Congress to make deals. He always managed to lift himself above that prosaic daily back and forth."

On Sunday's GMA, David Kerley used Reagan's liberal son, Ron, to dismiss Palin: "Reagan's son Ron - who has written a new book about his father at 100 - was having none of that, saying Palin is a soap opera, not serious, with nothing in common with his father."

The MRC's Brent Baker caught this gratuitous shot  in ininin a special Life magazine retrospective.

"After serving two terms, Reagan retired to the ranch. He rejoined a private citizenry that was much changed. Reaganomics had started a shift that would continue through the 1980s, a realignment under which America’s rich and powerful grew richer and more powerful, as the disenfranchised sank further. In 1987, 20 percent of U.S. children lived in poverty, representing a 24 percent increase during the Reagan years. In 1989 the wealthiest 40 percent of U.S. families controlled 68 percent of the wealth, while the poorest 40 percent controlled 15 percent: the biggest gap in four decades for which statistics were kept."

– Robert Sullivan and the editors of Life in a special "Ronald Reagan at 100" issue released this month.

A transcript of the World News segment, which aired at 6:45pm EST on February 5, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

SHARYN ALFONSI: To mark President Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday tomorrow, the Super Bowl will include a special tribute to him before kickoff. He was the guiding spirit of the 1980s, But the Gipper's influence may be even greater today. Here's John Berman.

JOHN BERMAN: There is Reagan Airport, the Reagan Building, the Reagan Library. Then there is the church of Reagan where candidates worship.

SARAH PALIN: One of my heroes and many of yours, Ronald Reagan.

TIM PAWLENTY: The brilliance of Ronald Reagan.

MITT ROMNEY: Take inspiration from what Ronald Reagan taught us.

BERMAN: Some Democrats have been know to do it too.

BARACK OBAMA: I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America.

KEN DUBERSTEIN: Everyone tries to grab the Reagan mantle because it's one of strong leadership.

REAGAN: Go ahead, make my day.

DUBERSTEIN: Of big ideas.

REAGAN: We must halt this fiscal self destruction and restore sanity to our economic system.

DUBERSTEIN: Of bold strokes.

REAGAN: Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

BERMAN :In fact, you might say there is a Republican primary and a Reagan primary. Who can be the most Reagan-y?

BERMAN: Mitt Romney's foreign policy/campaign book No Apology has 11 Reagan references. Tim Pawlenty's Courage to Stand, 24 Reagans. Sarah Palin's America by Heart, 33 Reagans. Only to be narrowly beaten by herself, Palin's Going Rogue has 34 Reagan references. And that isn't even counting a book from Newt Gingrich exclusively about Ronald Reagan. So who is the person on the planet who might be closest to Ronald Wilson Reagan?

DUBERSTEIN: I'm not sure anyone can succeed in being Ronald Reagan.

A transcript of Mitchell's comments on Meet the Press and Today is below:

Meet the Press

01/06/11

ANDREA MITCHELL: I mean, he said, "This is--the sound you hear around my feet is the concrete breaking around my feet," whatever the exact words were. People are trying--Republicans in particular, obviously--trying to appropriate Ronald Reagan for their own political purposes now. But his vision and his ability to work across party lines was so far broader. He stuck to his principles. He was authentic, which is I think one of the reasons why he's so admired after all of these years. But he knew when he needed to compromise, and he did. And he reached out with Democrats, not just the boll weevils who were the conservative Texas Democrats, but with Tip O'Neill and liberal Massachusetts Democrats as well when he needed to get something done with the help the really--the guidance of people like Jim Baker. But the genius of it all was that Ed Meese was there, there were conservatives there, and, and Jim Baker, more moderate Republicans. And it was a bit messy at times, but he had a range of views. And Nancy Reagan bringing even more people in to the--into play.

Today

01/06/11

JENNA WOLFE: You talk about him being so good with compromise. He did cross the aisle when it came to partisan politics oftentimes. What do you think he would say if he were alive today about the state of affairs in Washington today?

MITCHELL: He would be appalled. I mean, he loved politics, he loved people, he always, you know, got together with Democrats. After 5 or 6:00 he used to say that he could have a drink with Tip O'Neill. He would be absolutely appalled at the state of our politics, at the sort of vile rhetoric, at the inability of Congress to make deals. He always managed to lift himself above that prosaic daily back and forth. And I remember once when he was trying to cut a deal with his own House Republicans on tax measures and he went directly from an event in North Carolina where he was talking about fallen troops and came directly to Congress, talked about patriotism and then said, 'OK, fellas, what about that tax deal?' And, of course, the Republicans all caved in, his own party. He always managed to find a way, a message to reach across to people. He had a tough times and a lot of failures, Lebanon and others, Iran-Contra, but he managed to fight back, and largely with the help of Nancy Reagan on his side. She saw the pitfalls and--on both the Cold War, the relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev and also the fight to get back on his feet after Iran-Contra. She was the one who saw the way to reach out to Democrats and make compromises.

Ah, what about the democrats

Submitted by StillRight on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 2:22pm.

Ah, what about the democrats and JFK and now Obama? Just watch, the Dems and the media will start their own mythology around Obama as they have around Kennedy. Well they already have, never mind.

Right as allways, never left.

Around Obama? Not gonna happen.

Submitted by no tingly legs on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 2:58pm.

I honestly think Obama's record will be so disasterous that even the most simple minded Dem won't dare try to build any mythology around him any more than they would try to glorify Carter.  Things are getting so bad that where you used to see Obama bumper stickers with his narcissistic logo, you now see, sprinkled in, stickers which say "I Stand With The President". Why not a more honest version saying "Even though Obama's a total incompetent, I will never admit my mistake voting for him"?

media, desperately trying to be relavent and desperately trying to turn the tide of liberty back toward socialism.

JFK was the original "trickle down" tax cutting, defense hawk.  His policies are well to the right of any democrat since him, and unfortunately the majority of republicans.  But the media ignores all of that because his wife dressed nice.

I'm sure I've missed some, but so far various mad media outlets, including this one, have tried to link Hussain "O" to FDR (close fit, both are/were socialist bent on doing damage to America), Lincoln (habias what?), JFK (a real streatch), and after the SOTU address even . . . shudder, Regan!  Yet they ignore the most obvious association, the one those of us opposed to this POS have made all along. . . Jimmah Cotta!

Isn't it amazing that people can get in front of a camera and call Hussain "Reaganesque" and a week or so later get in front of the same camera and accuse conservatives of likeing what Reagan said?  Who's "appropriating" who here?

Let them go on polishing "The Cotta from Jakatta" all they want,  there is a saying about not being able to make certain substances shine.

Submitted by HockeyKid on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 2:21pm.

Life Magazine actually figured out that wealthy people have more money than poor people?  There's a shocking revelation.

By definition, if the wealthiest 40% and poorest 40% had the same amount of money (which sems to be Sullivan's implied best-case scenario), then everyone would have the same amount of money, no matter what they do, how much they work, or any other factors.  That, dear friends, is socialism as raw as it gets.

I'm also willing to bet that Mr. Sullivan doesn't believe that an untrained blogger should make as much money as he does, with his Journalism Education and Valuable Liberal Life Experience.

Cosmically Astounding Arrogance!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 2:34pm.

But it’s not just the MSM “thinkers” or any other liberal who doesn’t understand the meaningfulness of Reagan’s leadership and overall qualities that want to revise history… Back in July, 2010, the Siena College Research Institute asked 238 “presidential scholars” to rank the 43 U.S. presidents on 20 characteristics and declared Obama the 15th  best President… But Ronald Reagan only the 18th best.

According to those supposed scholars Obama won over Regan in the following presidential characteristics (numbers relate to the columns in the survey (see link below):

1. Background (Family, Education, Experience)

5. Court Appointments

6. Handling of U.S. Economy

10. Executive Appointments

11. Overall Ability

12. Imagination

13. Domestic Accomplishments

14. Integrity

15. Executive Ability

18. Intelligence

The scholars (no doubt in my mind mostly a bunch of uber-liberal, tenured, professors) apparently think we are too stupid to remember what Reagan accomplished.  Placing Obama above Reagan in any of the characteristics is insane… but the three characteristics where Obama wins that really “get my goat” are:  Integrity – Executive Ability – Handling of the Economy… What rock did these scholars hiding under in the 18 months prior to the survey???

I imagine we are supposed to be grateful to the entire liberal cabal for reminding us how we are to think and what we are to believe… but I think I’ll resist the temptation to play along.

You can find the Siena survey here: Survey of U.S. Presidents  …it’s a PDF file.

That certainly

Submitted by HockeyKid on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 3:28pm.

is some howlin' kind of chart.  I wonder how they conducted their comparisons.  For example, here are the rankings of Intelligence and Luck:

Intelligence
 1. Jefferson
 2. Madison
 3. Washington
 4. Wilson
 5. J.Q. Admas
 6. T.R.
 7. Adams
 8. Obysmal
 9. Clinton
10. FDR

By what measure, I wonder, did they evaluate intelligence?  I can't argue with Jefferson on top--the man was one of the great minds of history.  but Obysmal and Clinton in the top 10?

Luck
 1. Washington
 2. T.R.
 3. Reagan
 4. Jackson
 5. FDR
 6. Jefferson
 7. Polk
 8. Eisenhower
 9. Monroe
10. Clinton

So Washington was the luckiest president ever?  Yeah, I'll bet he woke up every morning during the Revolution and thought, "what a lucky guy I am!"  Same goes for T.R., Reagan, FDR and Eisenhower.  For anyone who thinks war makes leaders, it doesn't.  War reveals leaders and exposes frauds.

Check out column 20: “Your Present Overall View”… meaning how do you “feel” about the guy you are rating… Obama: 18th  but  Reagan: 17th … I guess a couple of wins for “the Gipper” don’t really mean all that much to these Bozo's – but the scholars can always point to them to justify their inane conclusions.

On Luck, Obama and Clinton should be the top two.  Obmama for getting elected on nothing but shallow platitudes and Clinton for perjuring himself and getting away with it.

How about the Church of Kennedy?

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 3:11pm.

There was Kennedy Airport (NYC), the Kennedy Center (Washington DC), the Kennedy Space Center in Houston, et al.  In Nassau County, New York where I grew up in the Sixties, there were at least two high schools named for JFK.

We've got RFK Stadium in Washington DC.

And everytime a member of the Kennedy family dies, we turn it into a national tragedy.  The ultimate obscenity was the burial at sea of JFK Jr., his wife, and his sister-in-law from the deck of a US Navy warship.

Want to know how important the Kennedys are, just ask Mad Monk Chris Matthews, whose utter devotion to them apparently permits him consistently refer to them as Jack and Bobby.

The standard was set by St. Edward of Hyannisport, also known to the flock as Teddy.   Of course, the involuntary martyrdom of Mary Jo Kopechnie was necessary for St. Edward to see the Light (well, maybe it took another 30 years), but St. Edward demonstrated that even a wayward Kennedy was worthy of sainthood by Church standards.

Nothing, but I mean nothing trips my trigger more than the burial at sea of JFK Jr.   As a retired Navy man… who has participated in solemn burials at sea… I found the entire JFK Jr. exercise to be demeaning, disrespectful, and affront to all service men and women (active and reserve) who actually participated in the defense our country!  “Junior” did not spend one day in uniform, yet there were hundreds upon hundreds of our honored servicemen, whose mortal remains were in warehouses waiting for a ship to be freed-up and sent out for a day to give them a proper burial at sea who got ignored.

Absolutely despicable!

God Bless our fallen shipmates and all who have served in the various branches

There are four things named

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 4:29pm.

There are four things named for Reagan, and these venues had to be energetically fought by republicans and conservatives to get those names. As for the 'church of Reagan' that's rich for a media that's dubbed Obama as the Messiah and the One that we've been waiting for, who will stop the rise of the oceans, and in whose presence a beam of light will shine down from heaven, and whose almost every photo in the newsmags show a heavenly beautific radiance, and whose DNC acceptance speech was in a temple. I could go on with more examples of the liberal worship of Obama, but it would just get boring and irritating.

And as for wanting to follow Reagan, the repubs aren't appropriating or misappropriating him. The democraps for the last forty years could have subscribed to Reaganism, and/or appropriated him for their causes, if they could find a single quote from Reagan to support their statist ventures. But they couldn't and so Reagan remains where he started, a giant President in the gallery of Republican Presidents along with Lincoln, and Eisenhower. The democrats have to be content with their gnatty Presidents, Carter, Kennedy, Clinton and Obama, and their socialist giant Presidents, FDR and LBJ. Quite the rogues gallery.

Presidential Scholars

Submitted by hayate1 on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 6:18pm.

Tend to be data driven but any analysis of a presidency is full of opinion.  opinion that is at least not at odds with facts.  Whether or not the readers remember, or selectively forget said facts doesnt change them or make them concoctions of some liberal scholars imagination.  (question for another post is why do you think it is that the vast majority of intellectuals are liberals?)

Clinton has an IQ of 159 while Reagan's is 105, Obama's is estimated in the 130-160 range.  Jimmy Carter is the only pres to release is IQ score which is 156.

I think that the rankings of the presidents on these categories is much less of a partisan exercise than some media make it out to be.  Well, make it out to be when the results dont favor the guy they like.  omg, Reagan is ranked below Obama on these criteria and I like Reaqan so it must be liberal bias.  Never mind the data used, it is politically motivated when the result is undesirable and factual when the result is desirable.

Like how can Obama be ranked above Reagan in integrity, intelligence and economy?  well it is certainly not meaningful to compare reagan's 8 yrs to obama's 2 and counting.  lots of bad and good will happen going forward.  But certainly Obama is more intelligent.  that is clear if one subscribes to the societally accepted measures for intelligence.  integrity is close but reagan committed an impeachable act when he negotiated with terrorists and traded arms for hostages.  Remember the Iran Contra scandal?  when terrorists bombed the marine barracks in lebanon Reagan quickly cut and ran. So far Obama hasnt done anything of that level of anti-american acts.

the jury is still out on the economy but comparing reagan's first 2 years to obama's we find similarities.  year 2 of reagan's unemployment was 10.8%.  the deficit had exploded from the tax cuts and his approval rating was lower than obama's.  reagan is the one who began the huge buildup of the national debt that we are currently saddled with and that is hurting the efforts to invest in the economy.  Reagan inherited from Carter a government debt of $75 billion which gave him lots of room to cut taxes and stimulate the economy with gov spending, which he did.  in the process reagan turned the debt from a mere $75 billion to more than $3 trillion.  Obama inherited a debt of $10 trillion and an economy that was in the midst of it's worst downturn since the great depression.  along with that tax rates were at the lowest level they have been in more than 50 years.  all this left him with no room to manuever and he still has managed to preside over lower unemployment rate than reagan, a stock market that had a record first year of any presidency's first year and low taxes.  in fact, one of the main reasons obama hasnt done better is bc the debt built up by the 3 republicans before him is crippling.

That is not even a good try dude. Jimmy Carter left office with interest rates and unemployment climbing. The ecnomic "downturn" was in full force. As was gas rationing, hostages in Iran, oil embargo and national debt and cap and trade!

Like I said, not even a good try. Demonstrate a little more ignorance on Reagan's coming to office. jimmy Carter was a national disgrace and world laughing stock! Same as Obama is. No one leader in the world, has any respect for Obama. None, not one! They laugh at him to his face!

Go to the last one first.  Of course it’s all nonsense… but to a troll it’s the equivalent of the 10 Commandments… err 10 Suggestions.   :o)

P.S.: it's only a partial answer... so keep the 10 bucks or give it to charity.

Puh-leez, hayate...

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 8:36pm.

If Carter was the only prez to release his IQ, how did you happen to learn of the (alleged) scores of Clinton and Reagan?  And by whose estimation is Obama's IQ in the 130-160 range?  Yours?  A panel comprised of MSNBC prime-time talk show hosts?

I'm afraid I have to call major BS on that bit of silliness.

Well, Jer, you and I have gone round and round about a variety of subjects.........but I have to give you credit for calling a spade a spade here. Oh.......is that a 'racist' statement????

And if Boy Blunder's IQ is 130-160...........then mine is in the mid 200's!!! And I've got more common sense in my little toe than this poser has in his entire being - including his wife's big Clydsdale rear end!!!!

Jer: I can honestly

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 11:40pm.

Jer:

I can honestly say

  1. You PM me more than Reagan ever did.
  2. You're more honest and far less egotistical than BJ Clinton.
  3. You've never been the reason your country had a Misery Index or forsaken Israel like Carter.
  4. Your IQ is higher than Obama's.  Much higher.

A little known fact about

Submitted by Hunter12 on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 10:08pm.

A little known fact about Reagan's IQ, it was 105.  He wrote it like that so he wouldn't shame the common man.  It was really ten to the fifth power, which is 10*10*10*10*10 or 100,000.  The 130 to 160 for Obama was calculated in the same fashion as dog years, which is 7 for the first one and 5 for each thereafter, so even the representation of 160 is actually 31.6.  That's an old dog, and while he is full of tricks, you can't teach him any new ones.   These findings are all posted at www.monforts.com/iqcalculation/genius/wtf.aspx?7.

I can make up crapola with the best of them.

They are unreal. Republicans

Submitted by ant on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 1:12pm.

They are unreal. Republicans "appropriating" a Republican President? How dare they!  And this is from the same group of people who try to "appropriate" Memorial Services. And then to say Reagan would be apalled at the rhetoric of today, while using the phrase "Go ahead, make my day.", an utterance from Reagan that had the media wetting it's panties back then. How short do they think are memories are?

Now that is amazing, hayate1---

Submitted by matthewdean on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 12:42am.

especially when the end result is that these 'learned' IQ dillywhackers state that based on all the parameters set, based on their extensive research of the subject, that history will rate George W. Bush as equal to Jimmy Carter in intelligence quotient, accomplishments, AND positive legacy level.

I call BS on you, your link, and the people who assembled that crap.

What the hell; go ahead and throw Jimmy Carter on the BS bus, as well.

And you can throw the weasel in the Oval Office on the bullsh*t bus, too.

That is where he should have been for the last two years.
