ABC’s de Nies Prognosticates: Not ‘a Dry Eye in the House’ for Michelle Obama Speech

Good Morning America correspondent Yunji de Nies on Thursday touted White House talking points when she highlighted Michelle Obama’s pitch for the 2016 Olympics to be in Chicago. De Nies parroted, "We're told there won't be a dry eye in the house by the time she's done." She was "told" this?

Was she also told that the First Lady would "bring down the house" or that "Michelle will hit a home run?" De Nies was in Copenhagen, covering the lobbying by Mr. and Mrs. Obama and Oprah Winfrey to the International Olympic Committee. De Nies also enthused, "And the President and First Lady will share the stage at that final presentation. We're told that he will focus on the big picture, while she will get very personal. She'll speak from the heart."

Earlier in the segment, the ABC correspondent fawned that the "The First Lady is heading Chicago's Olympic dream team..." In fairness, de Nies did feature House Minority Leader John Boehner decrying the President’s visit. She also explained, "That endeavor is not without controversy. This week, Chicago's bid drew protests at home. Tom Tresser runs No Games Chicago, a group that believes the games will bankrupt the city."

However, preemptively informing viewers that Mrs. Obama will bring an audience to tears is the type of journalism one should expect from Entertainment Tonight. It shouldn’t be on Good Morning America.

A transcript of the October 1 segment, which aired at 7:07am EDT, follows:

ROBIN ROBERTS: The torch is passed. First Lady Michelle Obama makes her pitch to bring the Olympics back to her hometown of Chicago. Will, she, the President and Oprah carry enough star power to get the job done?

7:07

ROBERTS: We’re going to change topics now. President Obama travels to Denmark tonight, after deciding the best way to campaign for the Olympic games is to do so in person. First Lady Michelle Obama is already there. And so is ABC'S Yunji de Nies, who joins us live from Copenhagen. Good morning, Yunji.

YUNJI DE NIES: Good morning, Robin. It is crunch time. The First Lady is spending the entire day behind closed doors. Meeting one-on-one with IOC members. She has just over 24 hours to secure the key votes. Michelle Obama began the day meeting a very important president. Not her husband, but the President of the International Olympic committee. The First Lady is heading Chicago's Olympic dream team, with star athletes by her side and some very high-powered help.

OPRAH WINFREY: I'm sort of an ambassador. Am I not, mayor? I'm kind of a- I've been appointed- I’ve appointed myself my own ambassador for Chicago.

DE NIES: An ambassador with her own brand. And a single task.

WINFREY: Really, just ask that I show up and be friendly. So, that's not very hard for me.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Every, single city who is bidding, wishes they had Oprah on their team. And we have her and we are grateful that she is part of this endeavor.

DE NIES: That endeavor is not without controversy. This week, Chicago's bid drew protests at home. Tom Tresser runs No Games Chicago, a group that believes the games will bankrupt the city.

TOM TRESSER (No Games Chicago): It's just the wrong project for the wrong city at the wrong time.

DE NIES: Across the globe, in Washington, critics say the President should stay out of this campaign.

REP JOHN BOEHNER: And now, the President's going to go off to Copenhagen, when we've got serious issues here at home that need to be debated.

DE NIES: The President will be on the ground for just a few hours. Long enough to headline the last presentation. The final pitch to undecided IOC members, like Ung Chang. What are you looking for? How can someone convince you?

UNG CHANG (International Olympic Committee): The last presentation. Last presentation. That's important.

DE NIES: And the President and First Lady will share the stage at that final presentation. We're told that he will focus on the big picture, while she will get very personal. She'll speak from the heart. We're told there won't be a dry eye in the house by the time she's done. And, Robin, Oprah says, if all goes according to plan, the party starts tomorrow.

ROBERTS: In Chicago, and everywhere here in the U.S. Yunji, thanks so much.

This adulation is sickening.

'news' now a mockery of itself

They WILL be meeting, they WILL be speaking, and WE'RE TOLD that there WON'T be a dry eye....  What the hell?  Can't someone just report to us what HAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED?  All this effort to manipulate images and expectations is what brings me to the edge of barfing.

News isn't speculating on people's reactions to what might happen.  News isn't passing along what some unnamed person has told you will happen.  (Who told you, your mother or some street drunk to whom you gave a quarter?)

There's no wondering why ABC News has faded into obscurity... what little news reporting they once aired appears to have been supplanted by a celebrity gossip show.

We're crying all right

I bet they will be sobbing over how much Valerie Jarrett's clients need money and fame from the Olys...It's so touching, that story, pitiful little Chicago, eclipsed by NY and LA, underappreciated...I can hardly go on. Sniff.

bleah

sometimes I think the Obama's do crap like this just to give the daily news cycle something else to ingest.

presidential air sick bag

That's the reason for the "barf" comment I had made earlier.  Granted, the subject line says "air sick bag" but not are they just in the air, but ON the air too.  Hm, I see a new line of product potential there.

Not Convincing

I saw Michelle say that Chicago would be a great place to host the Olympics and found her unconvincing. She did not appear to be speaking from the heart. It was a dry pitch for the city. I do wonder if it's more narcissism than anything else. It would make them happy if the Olympics where in their home town and they "made it happen". Are they picking there battles as best they can so that they'll have a feather in there cap for 2012?

Michelle Breaks the Bank

retspook

I don't know whether to vomit (sorry) or just go shoot myself.  Where in the H--l are these journalists, oops they are not journalists, coming from.  I havn't watched the main networks for several years now.  The sooner they are shutdown the better this country will be.  I just can't believe how in the "tank" these people are when it comes to the Obamas.

Hagiography is generally

Hagiography is generally written about the living accomplishments of the now deceased. I think this is the first time I have seen the hagiographical style of sanitized BS written about a living person. And by the media, no less.

Appararently, the lost souls in the media are now able to predict the swooning and joyful sobbing of the cult followers before a public appearance of the Obamas takes place.

Buddha and the Caesars of Rome should have been so revered.Where is Jean Bollard when we need him?

Pretty weird stuff..

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

The media is going for

The media is going for broke, angling for a "media bailout". That's why they're so punctual in their adoration. Their subscription numbers, ad revenues, and viewership numbers all suck. It's a matter of survival and leftism loves nothing better than government control, even if it's government controlling the press. Obama needs propagandists as all dictators do and they want to be his propagandists.

What is she going to say?

What is she going to say? How can you sell the place?

The other cities ought to remind the committee of the thugs that run Chicago. Then they should get up and talk about all the crime that is going to take place during the Olympics.  Here would be the headline to use tomorrow.

I am pulling for Rio. At least it is in a time zone where we can watch a lot of the action live.

Dream Team?

Nightmares are dreams too.

Is that the 'dream' team she was speaking of?

Three nightmares all pushing the same nightmare and leaving not a dry eye in the room.

So, is this another way of saying that the obamas, backed up by the fat lady are going to p!ss in the faces of all the attendees?

What part of TOLD don't you people understand?

We have been told there won't be a dry eye in the house.

That means there will not be a dry eye in the house.

Just wait until you get to see the text of the speech for yourself.  I'll bet you'll laugh till you cry, or get so sick you cry--therefore your eyes will not be dry.

This is one instance where I

This is one instance where I can agree with obama refering to the U.S. as arrogant.  Oprah may be a big shot here, but I doubt she's so revered overseas.  The Obama is only popular when he's giving away the U.S. (money or pride), they don't want to hear us coming asking for ANYTHING from the world.  The rest  of the world expects us to just give.  What a farce.

We're also told the Obama

We're also told the Obama Youth will be throwing rose petals at their feet so they won't have to walk where mortals have tread.

I would like to know

Is the White House an extenstion office of Chicago?  Does teh White only Represent Chicagonow a days? Also today the White House will be reviewing and giving it's advice of the After school beating of a High school student last week.

We also caught wind in our circle that the Obama Administration wants to change the Name of the White House from "White House" so that it would be a little less racist and more politically correct.  can anyone verify that?
