Only ABC Highlights the Scope of How Fast Obama’s Poll Numbers Are Falling

Of the three morning shows, only ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday highlighted just how quickly and severely Barack Obama’s approval ratings have fallen. In a report on the subject, correspondent Jake Tapper bluntly explained, "Since taking office, President Obama's approval ratings have fallen more steeply than any other newly-elected president in modern history."

In contrast, CBS’s Early Show charted the middle ground in a segment on the network’s new poll. Correspondent Bill Plante observed that Obama has lost some popularity over health care, but spun: "The latest CBS News poll shows that approval of the President’s handling of health care reform has slipped six points since July, even though his overall job rating for that period is down only slightly."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Tapper, however, pointed out that, on balance, Obama’s approval numbers are unimpressive. He starkly noted, "Currently at 50 percent job approval on the Gallup daily tracking poll, if President Obama dips any lower before November, his would be the second-fastest drop below majority approval of any elected president since World War II." The Early Show and NBC’s Today both have failed to mention such pertinent facts.

Tapper hammered home the point by adding, "Even Democrats are begging the President to improve his game on health care reform." An ABC graphic wondered, "The Obama Slide? Is President's Popularity Dropping?"

Tapper also provided a fair note of caution, stating that, at this point in his presidency, George H.W. Bush’s approval was at 73 percent. He, of course, was not reelected.

A transcript of the September 2 segment, which aired at 7:06am EDT, follows:

ROBIN ROBERTS: But now, to President Obama and his falling poll numbers. A new poll shows his approval rating falling farther than any newly-elected president in history. Our senior Washington correspondent, Jake Tapper, has the latest from the White House. Good morning, Jake.

ABC GRAPHIC: The Obama Slide? Is President’s Popularity Dropping?

JAKE TAPPER: Good morning, Robin. Well, White House aides say President Obama may give a speech in which he tries to grab all of the different strands of health care reform legislation on Capitol Hill and make one, big, comprehensive push. They say we're in a new phase of the health care reform debate because Republicans have walked away from the negotiating table. They know the President needs to improve his poll numbers on this issue in order to get his agenda through. Since taking office, President Obama's approval ratings have fallen more steeply than any other newly-elected president in modern history.

MARK K. UPDEGROVE (Presidential historian) This was this great goodwill that we saw with President Obama. It was bound to decline, given the enormous burdens he faced as a President, shortly into his term.

TAPPER: One of those challenges, the sputtering economy. President Reagan, the last president to take office in the teeth of a recession, fell from 73 percent approval in the spring of 1981, to 48 percent by the next February. Adding to Obama's problems are an increasingly unpopular war in Afghanistan and his own struggles with health care reform.

UPDEGROVE: Health care reform has been a vexing issue for all modern presidents. For those few old enough to address it, it's more often than not been an albatross.

TAPPER: Even Democrats are begging the President to improve his game on health care reform.

SENATOR CHRIS DODD (D-CONN): I think the President has got to decide, in a sense, and he has, to step up and frame this again for us.

REP. ANTHONY WEINER (D-New York): I think that, frankly, the President and the White House, have not done a stellar job on messaging this.

TAPPER: Currently at 50 percent job approval on the Gallup daily tracking poll, if President Obama dips any lower before November, his would be the second-fastest drop below majority approval of any elected president since World War II. Behind only Bill Clinton, who fell below 50 percent approval only four months into his presidency, because of controversies such as Travelgate and issues such as gays in the military. The long-term implications of President Obama’s precipitous slide are up in the air. At this point in his term, then-President George H.W Bush was at a high 73 percent approval. And he was not re-elected. George W. Bush was at 61 percent and had the most unpopular second term on record. Asked for comment about the poll numbers, a White House official tells ABC News, if we only did what was popular in polls, the banks would have failed, there would be no domestic automakers and we’d pull all our troops out of Afghanistan tomorrow. But none of those decisions would be in the economic or national security interests of the United States. Robin?

It's the economy stupid.

It's the economy stupid.  Which of course team Obama owned the moment they passed their "stimulus" bill.

I disagree. He voted for the

I disagree. He voted for the 2008 2009 budget in the senate. It was his before he ever got into office. He also voted for the bank bail out. Ran the meeting to draft the bill. That one is his also.

The United States, which is

The United States, which is purported by some to be a “Christian nation”, is the only country in the industrialized world that does not provide all of its citizens with affordable health care. It is immoral that our collective health is in the hands of a for-profit industry which is incentivized to deny coverage and raise premiums rates, while reducing payments to health care providers. The “voluntarily uninsured” segment of the population has grown exponentially over the last decade because so many people have been pushed out of the system by previous conditions and/or excessive premium increases. The more people who are outside the system, the greater the costs for all those who remain within it. After having visited a number of conservative blogs, I have become convinced that the problem many of these people have with health care reform has nothing to do with the content of the proposals currently before Congress. The real problem is President Obama. The idea of handing such an enormous political victory to an African-American president is too mortifying to contemplate, so they will say and do anything to sabotage reform and give Obama his “Waterloo”. I thought the divisive McCain/Palin campaign was a low-point for American politics, but the health care reform process has far exceeded those depths. Everybody has to have coverage, or the rest of us will have to pay more and more. In the next 7 years, medical costs will double and Medicare will run out of funds. Those two things are inextricably linked. Fail to do anything about health care and more companies will discontinue their group benefit. When that happens, more people will join the “voluntarily uninsured” group, hoping that the no one in their family ever gets sick. But, when they inevitably need medical treatment, the tax payer will either pay their medical bills, or bear the burden of their bankruptcy. Significant health care reform which includes a viable public option is essential to the physical and fiscal health of this country. Obama's numbers may be lower now, but on September 9th, watch them go up again.

Chester Riley

Shame on you people.

This letter was posted today on a CNN article about health care reform and President Obama's upcoming speech:

"Just Stop; take a good listen. The reality of our time is crystal clear.

I am heart broken that this country that I love, and want so much to be so very proud of has shown, and continues to show more and more of its horrific underbelly as sequential consequence to the election of President Barrack Obama.

If you stop and listen, as I did you will clearly see the vivid, nasty reality of our time. If you just stop, as I did you will no doubt conclude the "issues" are not relevant at all to the push to "bring down this President". In other words, its not the administrations health care reform policy, nor the foreign policy, not the stimulus, nor is it partisan politics or any other issue.

If you just stop and listen to all the chatter as I did, you will no doubt conclude that the only issue, is that of race. More specifically, the singular issue is the ethnicity of our President.

Post-election days were filled with the acknowledgements of "oh how far we've come" as a nation to have this African-American man be our President-elect. Well what should be crystal clear to us all by now is that this faith in a nation was so very misplaced, or at the very least, decades premature. His election was more a ground surge I liken to a deluge of fans at a European football match amassing against a weakened barrier; eventually the pressure is going to be to great for the weakened barrier to hold and the mob will push through.

I wonder more and more; is no one else getting it? Is no one else seeing what I see so clearly? Or do we all just not discuss it? The lunatic fringe, this country's racist core has waged a non-stop campaign predating the inauguration, to bring down this President no matter what the issue used, nor the cost.

Good recent example, the President's planned address to American school children. An address by all accounts totally innocuous of political rhetoric, simply a message to our children to stay in school, focus, work hard, etc. Parents threatening to boycott by keeping their kids out of school for the address; really? That is quite simply the good ole American white male racist who simply cannot possibly fathom his child sitting and listening to a black man in a position of greater power, on ANY subject. "That man's not gonna speak to my child."

Its quite reflective of what is at the core of, the very heart of the issue regarding President Obama's race, and that is the "that man's not MY President" mentality. This is the nucleus of the issue of our time. Basically, you have what appears a very substantial segment of predominantly white America that quite frankly cannot stomach a black man in our White House; period. All the other "white noise" is simply subterfuge; am I truly the only one cognizant of the reality of our time? Really?

I am sorry; I don't see the "progress of a nation". I truly wanted to, but its hard when clearly racist, insightful, dangerous rhetoric is spewed as hate speech daily, .......daily by hate mongers with a pulpit such as Rush, Glen Beck, as well as Fox News programmers, producers and on air personalities such as O'Rielly, and many other co-conspirators and we call it "news"; really? The fact that in my America, these pure racists can conduct their dangerous agenda on our airwaves daily, actually sickens me. The fact that the white sheets of yester-year are today, the shamefully thin veils made up of false issue opposition, sickens me. Where is the "progress of a nation" within this reality of our time?

Just stop, listen and recognize the true reality of our time; please.

Just a few thoughts from a heart broken, yet still wanting to be proud black American.

Nice try, but

Nice try, but it's not Obama's race.  It's his policies and the shoddy way he's running his administration.

Try facing reality and quit using race as a defense against every problem.

Second: Even if he were all white and he was trying to nationalize the US health care system you would see the same amount of opposition to such a draconian change!

Cut the crap, will ya? Who the hell do you think elected Obama, Black and Hispanics?

Gimmee a break dear Socialist

Once the government gets involved in anything. There is nothing but a bottomless pit of bureaucracy, paperwork, inefficiency and taxation to pay for the mess (see Social Security). I don't want to be forced to go off my superior health plan and support the millions of deadbeats the new NHS will have with my tax dollars. I do not want to wait for procedures because the government has decided in advance that I am too old or too much of a risk to spend the money. I am sorry but health care is not a right. I suggest you follow your principles and move to the Socialist Utopia of your choice.

"Somehow, I told you so, just doesn't quite say it." Will Smith in 'I, Robot.'

ahusser...

If you don't mind my asking, how much do you pay for your "superior health plan"?

Jer

Well Jer

Apparently you are trying to get me to say that I, not being indigent, have plenty of money to buy a good health plan. My children, without much income, are able to get health insurance coverage maybe not ideal but mostly for catastrophic events. If you cannot see the the huge money pit and bureaucratic BS which will ensue from this then you are blind to how the government runs things. The fact the legislation is in the thousand plus page range should tell you something about the coming boondoggle. I would rather help the supposed 47 million without coverage get coverage and would even be willing to help pay for the same through taxes than lose my ability to chose and be forced into the Governmant option. This legislation is being rushed without any thought for the real consequences in money and ultimately what care. I dont even think the reps I have elected understand what is really at stake. I for one believe it will just be another never ending welfare program giveaway.

"Somehow, I told you so, just doesn't quite say it." Will Smith in 'I, Robot.'

No, ahusser....

Apparently you are trying to get me to say that I, not being indigent, have plenty of money to buy a good health plan.

Not at all.  I was curious about the amount of the premium for your "superior" coverage.  For example, I at one time paid approximately $300.00 per month for me and my family which provided outstanding coverage--(prescriptions were five bucks).  Now I pay over a thousand dollars per month with a 40% co-pay and zero prescription coverage--adding several hundred dollars out of pocket each month to the premium outlay.

Obviously, under the former plan, I might be inclined to tout the US healthcare system as splendid--no need to change it.  Under my present plan, however, it is easier to understand the failures of the system.  Without the resources which I have been fortunate to possess, I would either be on the verge of bankruptsy, or forced to drop my coverage.  Those latter two options are the regrettable choices forced on far too many, and graphically illustrate the necessity for change.

What really aggravated me about that video was that there are already more volunteers hours given to all sorts of good causes in the US than in any other country. We give more money to national and international charities and good causes than any other country.

You just reminded me of an interview I saw some years ago with musician Don Henley (of Eagles fame) discussing politics and saying, "Never mind giving the people what they want, how about giving them what they need."  Yep, that pretty much sums up the liberal mindset, doesn't it?

I hope its not just health care

I hope people are coming to understand the who the person they elected really is.  I hope that making this fake U-turn on public option healthcare makes no difference at all.  I am hoping that for once, people will stop having such short memories. I am hoping that people have realized how much of a power grab this adminstration is working toward.  I am hoping people are paying attention to the kind of people Obama is surrounding himself with.
