Are the Trends Obama's Friend?

By Scott Rasmussen | February 03, 2012 | 19:08

While much of the focus these days is on the fight for the Republican presidential nomination, there are some developing trends that are likely to have the man already in the White House smiling. Only 29 percent of voters nationwide believe the United States is currently heading in the right direction, while 64 percent believe the nation has gotten off on the wrong track. Those aren't great numbers for a president seeking re-election — but that 29 percent is up from 24 percent a month ago and 16 percent the month before that.

A similar pattern can be found when reviewing the way people view the economy. The raw numbers are bad, but the trend shows improvement. Fifty-seven percent say the country is still in a recession. A majority has held that view consistently for four years. But the number that believes the country is in a recession is down from 61 percent a month ago and 67 percent three months ago.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Overall consumer confidence is rising, and so is what may be the most important indicator of all for President Obama: the way people rate their own personal finances. When the president took office, 35 percent of Americans thought their own finances were in good shape. That fell to 27 percent last summer — clearly not a good sign. But things began to turn around in the fall, and people now are rating their own finances just as they did on Obama's first day in office.

Again, perspective is required. These aren't great numbers. People would like to see improvement in their financial condition, and getting back to where they were in January 2009 is not something most would consider good news. But, still, it's a big improvement since last summer. If people are feeling better about their own finances, they're going to feel better about the guy living in the White House.

Not surprisingly, this has all been reflected in a modestly improving job approval rating for the president. For much of 2011, his positive ratings were in the low-to-mid 40s. In January, however, his ratings inched up to the high 40s for most of the month. On a couple of days, his approval rating even topped the 50 percent mark. If the president's job approval rating moves up and is consistently over 50 percent, no Republican will be able to beat him in November.

However, not every trend is moving as the president would like. At Rasmussen Reports, we measure the number of people who consider themselves Republican, Democrat or unaffiliated every month. In each of the past two months, the number that considers themselves Democrats has fallen to record lows. Now, just 33 percent consider themselves Democrats, down from 40 percent just before Obama took office. The number of Republicans has remained pretty steady during that time, but the Democratic base has shrunk.

The other concern for the White House is that the election will be held in November, not today. While the economic trends are generally improving right now, there is no way to know what direction they'll be heading in by summer or fall. And research has shown over many years that a single bad report on the economy causes confidence to fall immediately. It takes several months of good economic news before confidence can recover.

Permission to treat LSM as hostile witness?

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 7:26pm.

Don't trust them. Those who deal with them, come down hard on their bias with a strong case of the facts. Un-spin their spin so that the public may be woken further! Do not back down! It IS war! A war of ideas for the life of our Country! We won't forget! Tea Party treated like **** by them!

Who wins?

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 7:37pm.

Depends upon who fights. Why was Bush's 5.4% unemployment treated like death to the country -- while o'bama floats by on 9%, and is positively rewarded for 8.3%? Why can Bush's massive deficit be cause for shame, but o'bama's is nicely treated as "it's not enough, because the poor are suffering"? If the RNC allows the MSM to get away with this, then we deserve to lose every election from now on. We need to fight -- dirty, mean, and without regard for facts, morality, or anything else. There's a time to take the gloves off, and this is it. No more Mr. Gullible guy. No more assuming the lefies are actually honest Americans. They aren't. It's time to destroy them.

Somebody is seeing something I'm not

Submitted by Radical1979 on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 9:19pm.

I'm not seeing any improvement where I live. There is still a lot of unemployment, inflation is rampant (despite what the government says, prices are going up), and gas/fuel prices are still high. Wasn't there just an article here about applications for Ivy League schools going down because of the price?

I'd like to meet these people who see things looking up, because I'm just not seeing it.

You know what's another trend?

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 10:07pm.

Gasoline heading steadily upward without a peep from the news folks. I think it's going to be a number this summer that will dwarf most opinion polls.

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

Just in the last few months, rising premiums and costs for my homeowners insurance,  mandated flood insurance,  part D supplemental insurance, property taxes, car insurance, drivers license renewal, besides the rising costs of food and gas.

I have been unable to find a job except part time for the last 4 yrs.  If this is a recovery then I am in deep trouble.

Really? What if most of those jobs are either subsidized by the US people or out right paid for in total?

Oh, and witch policy do you think is responsible for this? This 1.4 trillion budget deficit, or making the poor, poorer?

If you blame him.for many lost jobs, then he.should get credit for new jobs. You can't have it both ways

I did not give him a pass on the deficit either. It is not a good thing, I just give credit where credit is due.

Simple argument from a simple person

Submitted by ckc1227 on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 2:21am.

No, you're giving credit where credit isn't due, based on some bogus, flawed sense of fairness. Nothing he has done is responsible for job creation. Plenty of what he has done is responsible for job losses.

He will

Submitted by GregE on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 11:14pm.

He will get credit for gained jobs. That's how it works, regardless of how stupid it is. If a President signs bills that create a better environment for economic progress (i.e. getting governments massive hand out of the way), more credit is due. When the economy survives in spite of a Presidents actions, he still gets credit.

The power of the Presidency has gotten far out of control, and even then, many of them aren't satisfied and just grab more that they have no authority to grab, and the lemmings cheer their own demise.

Another reason his numbers are going up

Submitted by ckc1227 on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 2:25am.

Our two main candidates have been seeing who can look the stupidest while attacking one another instead of Obama during the primaries, making Obama look somewhat decent in comparison. It's no coincidence that his numbers have started to rise since the primaries heated up.

Energy prices are going up again

Energy prices are going up again. That's a trend unfavorable to ObamAA+

The "cheap" gas stations by me had been as low as $3.15 as recently as mid January, now the best I've seen over the weekend was $3.41

Meanwhile, here in Chicagoland, gas is going as high as $4.95 a gallon by Memorial Day but brainless people in this area and in this whole state [Of confusion!] will vote for this puppet of David Asselrod in November!
