Obama’s Dance Moves: He Still Has That ‘Yes We Can’ Charisma

By Rusty Weiss | November 07, 2010 | 20:29

A  A

CNN has been airing a video clip today of the President and First Lady trying out some folk dance moves on their trip to India.  The scene isn’t necessarily newsworthy, nor does it stand out.  The President should be commended for at least trying to entertain the children and performers at a Mumbai high school.  It was a fun moment.  But McClatchy reporters went a little over the top with their personal dance review (clip below the jump).

They have dubbed it "the Obama Indian Tango."

It might be better known as "How Barack's Wife Got the President's Groove Back."

One of the biggest questions facing President Barack Obama in the wake of the Democrats' Election Day "shellacking" was whether he'd still have that "Yes We Can" charisma that energized people around the world. Apparently, in India, the answer is yes.

If only he had pulled out these dance moves prior to the election, perhaps the Democratic base would have been equally as energized.

Forced movie references aside, the gushing review doesn’t end there…

The report also finds a witness who was equally enamored with the President’s dance skills.  According to the report, one worker at the hotel “gushed” that he “danced from the heart, so never mind!”

Then, speaking for an entire nation, the report declared that “India was captivated.”

I think India may have been misquoted.

Then again, the Indian media apparently took the 20 second dance quite seriously:

Commentators tried to divine its greater meaning for U.S-India relations, while television reporters sought out dance reviews from choreographers and produced retrospectives on the first lady's previous public dancing. One station called it the "Obama Indian Tango."

Discerning the meaning of an off-the-cuff dance for U.S.-India relations?  Public dancing retrospectives?  This has to be India’s version of Comedy Central.

And if that wasn’t enough to make you try your dinner for a second time around, there’s this:

On the eve of the presidential visit, some Indian analysts were wondering if Obama still had the charms.

"Obama has still to prove to Indians that he is swoon-worthy," Indian newspaper columnist Santosh Desai told The Washington Post last week.

But on Sunday, that concern seemed to have vanished.

Thank goodness that, despite crumbling approval ratings and an historical shellacking in the midterm elections, the President is still ‘swoon-worthy’.

Indians haven't seen such swoon-worthy dance moves since, well, this...

And she liked the idea too.   And check out the hair too!  Here's Jackie Kennedy   OK, so now I'm on a rant about MO!   But you started it!!   Remember Peggy Noonan's paean to her arms???   She has come under attack for exposing her arms. They are toned and muscular, burnished and beautiful. That has to be threatening to some.   Good everlovin' grief!!   Does Noonan know what "burnished" means?   Did she think MO oils her arms like a bodybuilder to give them sheen?   No, Ms. Noonan, people are not "threatened" by her showing her arms.  We're just laughing at her exhibitionism.

[Note: I mean this as a joke about the India sacred cow thing, not a slam on Michelle...just realized it could be taken wrong!]

All this adoration over physical appearance with Michelle reminds me of the whole "Obama swimsuit edition" goofiness...I can't recall exactly how they described his physique, but it was the same kind of silliness. Wasn't there "rippling" involved? Or "glistening"? Anyway, something like that.  ((^_^))

Although it's totally ridiculous to make Obama's little dance a "he's still got that special jam" declaration, I do find it sweet (yeah, that's truly the word) when Presidents try to be fun and dance along with people, whether here in the U.S. or abroad. I like Presidents to be dignified, but it's the one area where I appreciate their vulnerability.

That said, he does dance like a dork. So did George Bush. And for some reason, I find it touching.

He wanted to be the king, or absolute ruler, dictator, whatever.  He even made comments to that effect several times.(don't ask me to look it up, it'll take too damn long, it's out there but the biggest indicator is him wanting the private security force comparable to the military)

And get this:

You'd think someone's getting too big for his britches, but look at the details.(small wonder why the people want him to leave)

Guess the invasion of India isn't going the way he wanted it or something.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Chairman is siding more with the Muslim Indians against the Hindu Indians.

After considering his odd affect in the presser last week, this makes alot of sense.

Also, it would account for his continued insistence that we voted against the economy (!?!) rather than as a repudiation of his policies.  He truly doesn't see it, because he can't....he's delusional.

I don't know what's better, stupid or delusional, but I don't want him in charge of the nukes (presuming he can find the card).

You know what is really scary? That we can read an account like that, and it's finally something that makes some sense! I'm not big on "off-the-record" comments, and I balance it out with what can be proven -- but you are never going to get White House staffers to go on-the-record on what's going on at the White House...so I take that into consideration when reviewing this info and considering it. And yeah, overall, it would make more sense to me than anything. Logical-thinking Americans want to find some sort of logic in all this! I don't mean to psychoanlyze, but just given Obama's upbringing and influences all his life...well, it's back to his foundation for me.

I found myself even more ticked after the election, based on his responses. Through these two years, I've gone back and forth between 1) Is this man delusional? or 2) Is he just really  manipulative/arrogant? I realize it can also be "all of the above."

The reason I was so mad after the election is because I settled into thinking he just must be really arrogant. But if he's got serious psychological problems, that's just sad. In any case, it's all bad for the country. Mad...sad...bad. Sorry. I really didn't mean to rhyme. ^_^

Regardless on whether this account is true or not, for me, it all goes back to Obama being elected on superficial external qualities -- instead of digging into who he really is on the inside. Personally, I think there were more than enough clues that something was amiss -- however you want to define it!

no kidding

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 11/08/2010 - 12:49pm.

It's one thing to have figured on some of these things, hell, most of it was speculation based on available data which wasn't much at the time, and really couldn't be nailed down as "solid."

I have no trouble believing it that it could be true, but even so, the fact that it's gotten like that makes it all the more frightening once the info starts coming out.  I can see how he could be all "cool" about the seal falling off and then going into a tirade off-camera about this.  The level of paranoia is right up there with Hitler who had similar deep-seated paranoid delusions.

However, we haven't seen any of this anywhere in the news, even Fox News, just yet, but the column was posted on Nov 6 and today is Nov 8.  So it may just come out pretty quick.  Hell, maybe some of  us who might know people at Fox News or elsewhere might just point them to this column and see if they want to look into it?

On the other hand, it may come out anyway while the Chairman is overseas living it up.  The reaction would be huge, I would think.  Is that too far-fetched to think of?

Unfortunately

Submitted by Blonde on Mon, 11/08/2010 - 1:08pm.

It will take some sort of "Howard Beal" moment for many in the US to believe this.  They'll defend him no matter what.

What really rings true is that his inner circle ensured he had a nice long jaunt outside of the U.S.  What will be telling is whether they cancel the Indonesian portion of his trip, due to the "volcanic ash" issue.   The democrats need to regroup, but Obama's typical laissez faire attitude toward anything Congress does wouldn't necessariy interfere anyway.  Great fun to see the dems try to oust Pelosi (and now I'm seeing Reed should step down, too).  Internecine warfare.

I also have to wonder (yet again) how much Bill Clinton figures into this.  He is one Machiavellian s.o.b. and it wouldn't surprise me at all....considering some of Clinton's most recent moves.  I am still SHOCKED over the whole Charlie Crist / Kendrick Meek thing in Florida, which just faded from view el rapido.  That is one smelly fish, IMO.
