CNN Claims No Favorites, But MRC Data Shows Campaign Coverage Skewed Left [UPDATED with CNN Reaction]

11/12: UPDATE with CNN reaction below the fold

CNN has launched a new advertising campaign, claiming to be the only cable network without an ideological ax to grind. “If you want to keep them all honest, without playing favorites, the choice is clear: CNN, the worldwide leader in news,” the on-screen message argues.

So, did CNN “play favorites” during the midterm campaign? MRC analysts reviewed all of the guests and commentators on CNN’s primetime weekday programs from October 4 through October 29, the last four full weeks before the November 2 elections. Guests were grouped into three categories: “Democrat/liberal,” “Republican/conservative,” and “Other.” The latter category included all non-political guests, as well as guests who were not associated with a clear political point of view.

Results and chart below the fold:

The results show that liberal guests outnumbered conservatives by a more than three-to-two margin, 61% to 39%. Our analysts found 88 “Democrat/liberal” guests to just 56 “Republican/conservative” guests. All three of the network’s primetime programs — Parker Spitzer, Larry King Live, and Anderson Cooper 360 — featured more liberals than conservatives among their politically-affiliated guests.

To be clear, CNN offered opportunities for conservatives and Republicans to speak during the crucial final weeks of the campaign. But as for not “playing favorites,” the data show the networks provided clear advantage for liberals.

UPDATE, 5:30pm ET November 12: The Politico’s “On Media” blog picked up on the MRC study, with a reaction from a CNN executive:

CNN took issue with MRC’s methodology.

“Simply using partisan labels on guests who are not even talking about politics is not helpful to the national discourse,” said Barbara Levin, vice president of media relations at CNN. “And counting a newsmaker/headliner guest who gets twice the airtime as a roundtable guest, distorts the true overall picture. As our promo says, CNN doesn’t play favorites and is proud to be the only cable news network without partisan primetime programs.”

Politico’s Keach Hagey invited me to respond. That, in part:

UPDATE: Rich Noyes, MRC’s research director, responded to CNN’s points, saying the content of the discussion was not parsed if the guest was strongly ideologically identified.

“If a guest (such as The Nation's Ari Melber) comes from a strong ideological perspective, we did not parse each interview,” he said. “National Review's Will Cain sometimes talked about non-political issues on Parker Spitzer, but he was consistently labeled as "conservative/Republican."

I also appended a comment to the Politico article as a rejoinder to the assertion that “Several of the people listed as ‘Democrat/liberal’ in study, such a Wanda Sykes, Kathy Griffin and Sean Penn, were on the air talking about non-political topics, such as bullying and the disaster in Haiti.”

I wrote:

FYI, the guests CNN claims were really nonpartisan made liberal points. For example, Kathy Griffin on LKL, talking about bullying, unleashed against conservatives:

“I think that the way that we had trickle-down economics in the 80s, this is trickle down homophobia. And I really want people to connect the dots. And that's why I believe there's a connection between Prop 8, Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and now the string of teen suicides. It's almost sanctioned to bully gay people and treat them as second-class citizens.”

That's why we classified her as a liberal.

What a laughable claim. Is there a single CNN analyst/anchor

Submitted by krendler on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 1:10pm.

Is there even a single CNN analyst or anchor that could be considered right of center? There may be one or two - and perhaps there are a couple who might pass as "neutral" - but the ratio of left of center to right of center is off the charts.

Who'd be considered right of center?

John Roberts?

Ali Velshi?

Fareed Zarkali?

Larry King?

The departed Sanchez?

And then there's the guests they invite on, and the left-ward slant they take on just about every possible story.

They might be somewhat right of MS-NBC, but not by much.

CNN's idea of fair and

Submitted by SonnyPalermo on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 2:30pm.

CNN's idea of fair and balanced is to have Ellen Degeneres debate Rosie O'Donnell on the topic of gay marriage.  With Ellen debating from the left . . .

Disagree with a conservative and they will say you're wrong.  Disagree with a liberal and they'll hate you. And try to destroy you.

Submitted by KC Mulville on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 4:22pm.

When a liberal comes on Larry King, and Larry gushes over them for an hour, teeing up softballs ... how does that compare to bringing on a conservatives who gets a brusque, condescending dismissal? Does that count as an equal presentation?

When the gay marriage issue is discussed, and CNN basically sponsors a documentary that supports one side, and gives conservatives a mention ... is that an equal presentation?

The appearance numbers can't be the only barometer.

True, KC... But Fox can

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 4:40pm.

True, KC...

But Fox can also be hoisted on that pitard.  For example, Hannity and Colmes was balanced only nominally.  The agenda of the show was nearly always tilted right.  [A typical intro would be Hannity's "You won't believe the latest outrage by the Democrats...more in a minute."

Fox does indeed tilt to the right. On the other hand, CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, NPR, PBS, MSNBC, The Weather Channel, The History Channel, National Geo, The NY Times, LA Times, WaPost, Newsweek, Time Mag. all tilt to the left, and/or are the left.

Poor example, Jer

Submitted by timothe on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 5:58pm.

As Hannity's show, even when Colmes was on it, was based on commentary, not news.  That show was never disguised as anything other than right-leaning commentary.

On the other hand, Larry King sets himself up as a neutral observer yet always seems to treat liberals much more softly than conservatives in his interviews.  If King (properly) identified himself as a liberal, there would be no problem.  But alas, King, (and Blitzer and Cooper, and O' Brien, and Schieffler, and Williams, and Couric and...so on) never identify themselves as liberal.  It is the main reason why sites like Newsbusters are so successful.

Contempt prior to investigation is ignorance.

Well, timothe...

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 7:47pm.

I must give you credit for admitting that H & C was "right-leaning".  Many here keep insisting it was an example of Fox's fair and balanced line-up.

Years ago when I watched much more of King's show than I have in recent times, I thought I recalled his once admitting to being "liberal-leaning".  However, I just did about a ten-minute google search and couldn't verify it.  I felt he did a reasonably good job of maintaining ideological even-handedness during his interviews.  He certainly wasn't overtly political.

But, I agree--whether he has acknowledged it or not--that Larry leans left, and if you say that fact has come through on his show to a greater extent than were my impressions, I won't contest the point.

Submitted by Tomorama on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 7:25pm.

Ok Jer, if they were not fair and balanced on Hannity and Colmes even though one was an uber- Liberal and the other was an uber-Conservative, WTF does that make ALL the others shows on the other networks?

BRUTALLY unfair and unbalanced would have to be the answer.

So that would make Fox MORE fair and balanced that ANYONE ELSE or at LEAST the closest.

For the record, I miss the show BIGTIME.

Have you ever listened to Colmes Radio Show Jer?

Submitted by exLib on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 8:13pm.

If you did, i guess you'd have to conclude that he's getting paid allot of money to continue the charade, since you don't believe that Colmes is a legit liberal.

Unlike the token right-wingers some of the other stations employ, like K Parker, or some idiot on CBS who can't explain conservative fiscal policy, at least Colmes defends Obama, and takes some pretty radical left-wing stances.

No I haven't, exLib..

Submitted by Jer on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 11:15pm.

I don't believe Colmes show is available in my area.  It's basically wall-to-wall conservative talk around here.  But I wouldn't listen to Colmes anyway.  Contrary to what you posted, I do believe he is a liberal.  I just don't believe he is a very effective spokesman for liberalism.

But that was only a part--and a minor one at that--of my criticism of H & C.  My principal objection was that the show was centered around, focused upon, and continually advanced a conservative narrative.  It was like a court of law where Hannity was almost always the prosecutor--charging Dems with some variety of political malfeasance--and Colmes was almost always relegated to the role of the hapless defense counsel.

Or maybe I should say "apocryphal".  Look it up.

KC brought up the issue that it's not just the numbers or ideological ratio of guests which provide a barometer for bias.  I elaborated on that issue.  And the majority of the comments posted by a variety of individuals has amplified that point in some fashion.

Third man to beam down = Talk show guests

Submitted by KC Mulville on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 6:17pm.

Star Trek watchers used to have a rule. Whenever Kirk and Spock were about to beam down to a planet, if some other person beamed down with them, that third person was sure to be killed. The only reason that third guy was there was so that he could be killed off.

All cable networks understand that rule. When they invite a Democrat and a Republican on to discuss some topic, the "other" side is always represented by some hapless, helpless, often-incoherent hack, who is sure to become a punching bag. The Democrat on Fox is always a whack job liberal professor who eventually admits that he loves Stalin. The Republican on CNN is always exposed as a racist. The conservative on MSNBC  is always ... OK, doesn't fit, because there never is a conservative on MSNBC. (I know, you all saw that coming. Sorry.)

The opponent is always the Star Trek third man ... he's only there to be killed.

Unfortunately, KC...

The cable news networks keep recycling the same hapless "victims" to be knocked off.  At least the Star Trek audience was kept in suspense regarding the fate of the "Third Man" being beamed down with Kirk and Spock until all three actually stepped into the transporter.

On the other hand, I know as soon as Al Sharpton is announced as a forthcoming guest of Hannity or O'Reilly that the poor Reverend is once again headed for the chopping block.

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 9:48pm.

I'll admit Sharpton is less radical and more sensible than 10-15 years ago, but I still doubt his is the face and voice [speaking philosophically here, not racially] that most Democrats wish to project as emblemmatic of the party.

Did the red-shirted guys ever consider plaid?

I don't entirely disagree.  But I believe most white/centrist-idependents--which comprise a significant demographic of Fox's audience--continue to view Sharpton through a recollective lens depicting the archetypal extremist black preacher railing against a racist white sheriff who had 'ostensibly' raped Tawana Brawley--until the hoax was eventually exposed.

I just noticed I put too many "m's" in emblematic in my earlier post.

There is also a rule the liberal networks give their conservative guests and that must be a list of things they are not allowed to say.

The only person I have ever seen that rule rescinded on is Ann Coulter, she can say whatever she wants.

Of course the media has already done a great job of labeling those things conservatives should never say on the air as homophobic, racist, vile hate speech.

CNN's leftist ideological

Submitted by fitzfong on Sat, 11/13/2010 - 11:41am.

CNN's leftist ideological bias is not best exhibited in its roster of guests on its prime time shows, it's in the ostensibly objective, but deliberately loaded news delivery.  CNN's anchors and commentators have mastered the art of subtle language usage and "professional" tone to portray themselves us straightforward, unbiased information deliverers, when they are, in fact, as tilted left as MSNBC.  Anyone who hears Kyra Phillips, Don Lemon, Suuuzaaahhhn Malveaux, Fareed Zakharia, Ali Velshi and former "journalists" like Susan Roesgen, Christiane Amanpour or Rick Sanchez and can't find the liberal pill buried in the smelly "objective" dog food is in severe denial.
