Pre-Election Notable Quotables: 'The GOP's Agenda Has to Be Stopped'

By Rich Noyes | November 01, 2010 | 10:37

One day before Election Day, the MRC has a fresh new edition of Notable Quotables posted over at MRC.org. Topics this week include: the liberal media’s pre-election meltdown, with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann frothing that the election of “unqualified, unstable” Tea Party Republicans “would destroy America from within,” and Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter engaging in open electioneering: “The GOP’s agenda has to be stopped.”

To read it online, posted with five videos with matching MP3 audio, plus a sixth quote with a matching audio clip, go to www.MRC.org.

For NewsBuster’s readers, here are some of the choicer quotes from the last couple of weeks, reflecting liberals’ increasing desperation as the election clock ticks down:

"Cataclysm" of GOP Win "Would Destroy America"

"[The Tea Party-backed Republicans are] a group of unqualified, unstable individuals who will do what they are told, in exchange for money and power, and march this nation as far backward as they can get, backward to Jim Crow, or backward to the breadlines of the '30s, or backward to hanging union organizers, or backward to the trusts and the robber barons...It is nothing short of an attempted use of democracy to end this democracy, to buy America wholesale and pave over the freedoms and the care we take of one another, which have combined to keep us the envy of the world. You do not think your freedom is at stake next Tuesday?...If you sit there tomorrow, and the rest of this week, and you let this cataclysm unfold, you have enabled this. It is one thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from without. It is a worse thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from within."
— MSNBC's Keith Olbermann in a 21-minute "Special Comment" on Countdown, October 27.

Liberal Media Desperation: "The GOP's Agenda Has to Be Stopped"

"We [the press corps] are so eager to promote ourselves with the smartest take on how President Obama and the Democrats got themselves in this pickle that we haven't done a good job explaining the stakes....A right-wing Republican takeover of Congress and state capitals isn't something to accept with indifference. Midterms matter, and voters tempted to skip this election should have their heads examined."
— Newsweek's Jonathan Alter in the magazine's November 1 edition, "Why the Midterms Matter: The GOP's agenda has to be stopped."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Tea Party Fools Don't Know They're Pawns of the Rich

Host Chris Matthews: "What do you think of these Tea Party people, Mr. President? I look at a lot of them as — they're not all crazies, they're regular people, a lot of them middle, middle-class people and they're very religious. They're church-going people like yourself. And I wonder, do they know that they're being backed by big corporations and all this conservative money at the top?"
Ex-President Jimmy Carter: "The ones that know it, deny it. And obviously, the Tea Party movement has been almost completely financed by hard-right oligarchs....The Tea Party movement has been suborned by these very right-wing people who don't give a darn about low-class working people, but just want to feather their own nest."
Matthews: "Well, I wish they knew that."
— MSNBC's Hardball, October 25.

Ruing Politicians Too “Terrified” to Raise Taxes

"No one will talk about taxes. They are terrified. Somehow the religion, the anti-tax religion has gotten so bad that if you — if anybody says, ‘We're just going to have to do this,' I mean, it's as if, you know, you killed a baby or something."
— CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl on MSNBC's Morning Joe, October 18.

Hailing "Irresistible" Pelosi

"Nancy Pelosi is considered one of the most effective Speakers in congressional history....The irresistible force who marshaled House Democrats to pass controversial administration policies — including the stimulus package, Wall Street reform, and health care....Pelosi's support for a middle-class tax cut, children's issues, and education, has made her a hero in some quarters."
— CBS's Rita Braver profiling Pelosi for Sunday Morning, October 17.

Brian Harangues Governor to Spend Other People's Money

NBC's Brian Williams: "[New Jersey Governor Chris Christie] took a big hit for saying no to New Jersey's share of a new tunnel beneath the Hudson River, a huge public works project designed to ease congestion. His decision exploded on the op-ed page of the New York Times which called it ‘a blow to national hopes of a recovery.' It's where we started our conversation with the Governor today....[to Christie] Couldn't you find the money? Isn't there a way if you really wanted it, if you really wanted it for long-term investment?...The Times goes on, ‘Here's how you should think about the decision to kill the tunnel: It's a terrible thing in itself, but, beyond that, it's a perfect symbol of how America has lost its way.' You're being tied to the nation losing its way by dint of this decision."
Governor Chris Christie: "Yeah, by the New York Times. I'll take a deep bow for that, Brian."
— Williams repeatedly quoting liberal columnist Paul Krugman to Christie on the NBC Nightly News, October 21.

Liberal Comic = "Only Trusted Branch of Government"

"The truth of the matter is that [Comedy Central's Daily Show host] Jon Stewart, at this point, is the only trusted branch of government. You know, I mean, in the end, Stewart and Colbert, really are like the Huntley and Brinkley of today, in the sense that people really, really trust them."
— TheDailyBeast.com editor Tina Brown on ABC's Good Morning America, October 27.

NPR: Heart of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy?

"I call NPR National Pentagon Radio. They're no more left wing than Fox News as far as I'm concerned. Look at the commentators they have on there, right? They're all right-wing commentators. I couldn't get in the door of NPR. I'm sure you don't appear on their shows either, right? They lean so far right. The idea that they're part of the liberal media, as if they were. Look, except for MSNBC, these guys control all the media as far as I'm concerned."
— Left-wing radio host and former CNN and MSNBC co-host Bill Press on Ed Schultz's radio show, October 22.

Another Liberal Offering Civility Lessons

Co-host Joy Behar: "You know what I'd like to see her do? I'd like to see her [Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle] do this ad in the South Bronx. Come here, bitch! Come to New York and do it."
Co-host Sherri Shepherd: "We're praying for you. We're praying for you."
Co-host Elisabeth Hasselback: "Even Joy is praying for her."
Behar: "I am not praying for her. I'm telling you right now. She's going to Hell....She's going to Hell, this bitch."
— ABC's The View, October 26, talking about Angle's ad against illegal immigration.

Rise of Tea Party = Nazi Germany in the 30s

"Hitler, by the way, never got more than 33 percent of the vote ever in Germany....He wasn't a majority guy, but he was charismatic, and they were having bad economic times — just like we are now. People were out of work, they needed jobs, and a guy came along and rallied the troops. My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader, because all they're selling is fear and anger and that's all Hitler sold — ‘I'm angry and I'm frightened and you should hate that guy over there.'"
— Actor/director/liberal activist Rob Reiner on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, October 22.

Twisted history

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 10:43am.

Oh my goodness, I haven't seen such twisted history like this before.  Another word would be revisionist, but twisted is more appropriate.

I'm guessing they are saying the GOP's agenda must be stopped because those people, at least the Tea Partiers, know what the Constitution is really all about and keeping the masses dumb is the only thing the Dems are counting on just to hang on to that control.

If these things were said on Fox News or Rush's show, it would be called "hate speech", but since it was used by the left, well, it's o.k.

Ryan Seacrest????

Submitted by PrairieSky on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 6:48pm.

The POTUS is giving a a post-election interview not to David Gregory or George Stephanopoulos or Tom Brokaw or even Larry King, but to Ryan Seacrest?? Seacrest may be a swell guy, but he is not a newsman, and is hardly considered a "serious" media personality...This will undoubtedly be a major "fluff" piece if there ever was one. This, right on the heels of Obama's stellar, and embarrassing, appearance on John Stewart last week...Obama just seems to have a singular talent in diminishing himself as the president.. The man just doesn't get it..

Sarah Palin's Alaska

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 6:58pm.

Obama's going to speak to Ryan Seacrest, and Karl Rove thinks Palin's show about Alaska isn't up to the dignity of the presidency?  Please Mr. Rove, recognize that the office of the President has been dragged through the muck, and Palin could only raise it.

Proud member of the 53%!

Agreed...I've been quite disappointed...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 7:11pm.

in Rove lately...I've always thought of him as a brilliant strategist, and a pretty straight shooter, but his apparent issues with Sarah Palin annoy me. He seems to react to her as many others of the Repub party insiders do, and I gave him more credit than that.

These guys (and there are some gals, I'm sure) just see Sarah Palin as a threat to the old guard party power structure, rather than as someone who appeals to and understands the hopes and concerns of many Americans much in the same way as President Reagan did. I am hoping that Rove, as well as others, will come around to see and appreciate her for what she is, rather than what they mistakenly and cynically view her as being. The fact is that Sarah Palin "gets" it...I just hope that in time Rove and Co. will finally "get" her. Time will tell.

Sorry for the length

Submitted by KC Mulville on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 11:45am.

Forty percent of the country identifies themselves as conservative.

Olbermann is telling us (that same 40%) that we're racists. Jonathan Alter is telling us that we have to be stopped. Jimmy Carter is telling us that we're stooges of the rich.

  • Now, have you ever tried to tell someone that they're evil? For the few who have, how effective was that? Did the evil person slap their forehead, beg forgiveness, and change their lives ... simply because you told them they were evil? (As if their own evil was just a fact that needed to be pointed out?)
  • Probably not.
  • So I'm going to conclude that Olbermann, Altter, Carter, Reiner, etc., weren't talking to us in the hope that pointing out our evil would provoke us to thought, and then to purity again.

In fact, they weren't talking to us in the first place. They were talking about us, to others. Which others? Liberals? Yes, to a degree - they were soothing the bruised egos of the liberals who are about to get rejected. They were assuring liberals that liberalism is still truth, and that the reason it failed with Obama is that evil people got in the way.

But most likely, they were talking chiefly to "independents." They were trying to scare the hell out of "moderates," on the premise that moderates would respond to a TV or media figure "explaining" things to them.

My friends, what do these quotes show? It shows that when the power of the media is in the hands of desperate clowns, they'll abuse the microphone to bully weak-minded people.

Their strategy depends on their unity. The power of the media comes chiefly from the impression that they speak for all of the people, at least all of the smart people. (Weak-minded viewers would then be compelled to agree, reckoning that if everyone else agrees, they must all be right.) That's why they hate FoxNews -- unless all of the media speak with one voice, the media can't depend on the impression that this is what everyone thinks.

We need more conservative media outlets. The way to combat liberal bias is to even the number of voices. The liberal abuse of the media comes because they present a united front to the weak-minded. The strategy, therefore, must be to break up that unity. FoxNews is a great start, but we need more.

I totally agree

Submitted by NCConservative on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 2:36pm.

I completely agree, KC.

In grad school I had a class on "rhetoric" (taught by a liberal, of course), but one of the very interesting aspects of that class was how identifying and speaking to the right audience is (almost) as important as the message itself.

I knew a guy several years ago who would repeatedly call me a "nazi" whenever we debated about politics and government.  To your point, it did not make me rethink my opinions or sway me to his side, but I believe it somehow provided validation for himself.  If I am a nazi, his view *must* be better than mine.  In reality, all it accomplished was make me lose respect for him, his methods, and his perspective.  When namecalling is all you have, I don't pay attention to what comes after that.

Alter, as usual, is full of it. What is so gawd awful about the GOP agenda? Smaller government, lower taxes, reducing spending, reducing the deficit, and repealing Obamacare, that behemoth, budget busting law that 60+% of Americans did not and do not want? Why would anyone want to vote for any of that?? Of course...What a destructive agenda that is...It must be stopped at all costs...Right Mr. Alter? Fool.

Whenever you read stuff like...

Submitted by stage9 on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 2:12pm.

"It is a worse thing to be attacked by those who would destroy America from within."

You begin to see the agenda of the liberal emerge. It's been noted on this site many times that liberals often demonize others so as to distract from what they themselves are doing.

This is a perfect example. For years liberalism has been destroying the very fabric of American culture. Liberals absolutely hate the America our Founding Fathers birthed and they have worked to slowly and methodically chip away at our founding principles until the America we once held dear is no longer recognizable.

They believe we want to "go back". And we do. We want to go back to the goodness that gave rise to our greatness.

It IS time to take America back from liberal socialist/marxists who are bent on wiping away the American ideal.

They are out of touch with America and Americans. They don't understand it nor care to. They are idealogues hell-bent on 'transforming America" rather than reinforcing her greatness. They have hijacked our schools, our churches and our government. It's time to take back what was stolen. We must continue to expose their treachery to the light of truth and ensure these anti-American liberals are never allowed to hold public office again.

Out with you liberals! All of you! Tuesday is Judgment Day.

"If God is dead, somebody is going to have to take his place. It will be megalomania or erotomania, the drive for power or the drive for pleasure, the clenched fist or the phallus, Hitler or Hugh Hefner." — Malcolm Muggeridge

Funny!

Submitted by C-townGiant on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 2:09pm.

What I find so incredibly amusing about all this ranting and raving from the left is the delicious irony:

they are exactly what they claim the TEA Partiers to be.

Well, I am hoping the Giants take care of business tonight, finish off the Rangers, so I can give my full attention on Tuesday night to election returns as they pour in from around the country.  I would hate to have to cut back to Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter to get the latest analysis on why the Rangers going back to San Francisco (where they have never won a single game) down 3 games to 2 in the World Series is exactly where they want the Giants!  Backs against the wall (up 3-2?), desperation time (with Cain pitching, at home...again), must-win-at-all-costs (OK...don't want to see Sanchez on the mound again...I concede that one) game 6.

Just finish off Texas tonight, so I can focus on America finishing off the Obama agenda tomorrow.

My deepest sympathies.

With no bravado, nor braggadocio, you simply ran into a team with better pitching.  Great pitching always beats great hitting.

Interesting point made by former MLB player Morgan Ensburg on MLB Radio today.  Major League scouting reports on pitchers are much less in depth than those produced in college.

Heck, I can remember when we didn't even have scouting reports!

If it wasn't for the fact that child #7 is due in 6+ weeks, I would say, "Take me now, Lord.  I have peace."

Congratulations to the Texas Rangers and their loyal fans.  With that lineup, you will be competitive for years to come.  We'll see you again.

Sadly, that seems to be coming true, especially in "blue states" such as my own (New York).  Therefore, it is essential that Republicans in blue states come out and vote tomorrow!
